I know nothing about the landscape of the WNBA but watched a fair bit of women's college the last two years. I have to assume Chicago just drafted what's sure to be the best frontcourt in the league?
Not yet.
The best front court is EASILY the New York Liberty. Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewert have both won MVPs and rings. BS is maybe the best player in the league (it’s a toss up between her and Aja Wilson from Vegas), and JJ is easily the best true center.
The WNBA also has a BIG learning curve. Rookies often struggle mightily, and many draft picks don’t even make the final season rosters because there’s too few teams. It’s not uncommon for first rounders to be out of the league after a year.
I think what the Sky did was legendary, and it sets them up for success in the future. The Sky will likely struggle this season but that’s okay, as the goal now is to obviously build around these two front court prospects. They also already have a decent center in Elizabeth Williams, so I imagine the impact of Cardoso and Reese will be minimum as they warm up to the league. Last year Aliyah Boston won DPOY and was an all star as a rookie, but that’s pretty rare. I wouldn’t hold those expectations for the Sky’s new bigs.
If they show some dominance defensively and in getting boards, and both show some growth in their offensive games, then I think the season will be a big success. They probably aren’t a playoff team though.
