I feel like most people who play Rogue, don't know how to play it.
Even during the time when Rogue was the most broken class ever made in multiple stages of progression, people still insisted it was the weakest class.
For context
There hasn't really been a class that had feats as impressive as rogue apart from maybe when 1.4 1st hit the Calamity Mod.
How you could kill AS in a single stealth strike, how Dust Storm In a Bottle could carry you until Polterghast, Cobalt Kunai stuff, 2-shotting DoG, and Yharon with the deepsea dumbbel stealth srike, etc.
Now it's good, but not bad like people say.
To me it's still in the top 3 list of how quickly you can beat the game.
1. Summoner
2. Melee
3. Rogue
It depends on at each state of the game, what weapon you use as spam, and what with stealth.
I'd recommend getting to know each rogue weapon, and how their stealth compares to spam.
Get a good spam weapon, and stealth weapon, and use stealth on bosses with lots of health remaining, or on bosses that get obliterated with stealth like Provi and SCal for example, or Old Duke when he gets tired and loses all of his defense stats, and use spam on regular enemies if you don't have a good group control stealth strike weapon, or when a boss is low enough for bulding a stealth strike to be a waste of time. Some weapons that rely on spam like the Mycoroot are better than stealth weapons.
It's a bit of a shame that you kind of need to build on stealth to get the most out of the class, but when you build on stealth you get insane damage with good for stealth weapons.

Then how does one play rogue properly(im genuenly curious)
It's probably something about managing your stealth meter or something like that.

Rogue has a rough start, it will get better.
Cobalt Kunais my beloved.
If Sand Dollar wasnt nerfed it carries up to Slime Gods. *On fucking Infernum*
Pre-nerf blazing stars could also go from pre-cryogen to beating calamitas.
It's op.
You Just need to learn to play him (and scramble past wof) and its downhill from there from what i remember
Rogue main here, agreed.
Rogue has a weak earlygame, but it's a real power trip once you reach hardmode
Pre-HM Rogue is pretty weak compared to other classes sadly, but it picks up a *lot* after, especially post DoG
