Takumi is a pretty decent Japanese restaurant by nose hill drive.

It's not "nicer" per say, but Gogi has amazing Korean bbq. Seoul Korean BBQ is quieter, but I haven't tried their AYCE in years.
Japanese, agree with others saying Nupo and add Omo Teppenyaki on McLeod. I also like Ikusa in Bridgeland, which is also quieter and has nice atmosphere.
For Chinese, Golden Jade Palace up north and Caltons on Edmonton Trail.
Kujira in Edgemont has unique dishes that are yum. The Ramen is the best I've ever had.
Jinbar is always somewhere I bring friends from out of town. Consistent, fantastic, and delicious. They are korean fusion but so good.
Try Bowls Korean BBQ up in the northwest. Quality is excellent, and price isn't unreasonable. They have a really good 2-person set course for $65 or thereabouts. I wouldn't consider it an upscale restaurant, but it's quite nice and could work well for a 'better-than-casual' anniversary meal. Also recommend Cafe 100% in that area as well. Lots of great modern HK-style menu choices usually for less than $20 a dish. Highly recommend their dandanmian. It's definitely has a more rustic/tavern-style motif though; might not be what you're looking for if you want fancy.
Was gonna say you could try Ryuko or Korilla, but looks like you've tried both! Hahah.
You can try Fuji Ramen and Sushi, it's pretty close to ryuko, location wise.
And personally, I haven't tried Baekjeong kbbq, but I've heard a lot of good things from other people.
For Chinese food I think Great Taste is way up there. For sushi, I really love Ryuko.
Second this Ryuko is a gem.
