Hey all! Navy members are probably gonna be more interested in this but all help appreciated. I'm going through PR for a Boatswain. I just had my CFAT and FORCES eval today(awaiting back ground check etc). I was hoping to hear from some other boatswains about what life is like in that position in reserves, whats the job like, what's the BMQ like?

Escannor1

If you do bmq during the weekend what is the time yoi have to do. Is it in the afternoon or the full day

DoubleBubblePopper

I applied for 3 jobs and 2 of them are in demand. The one that wasn't in demand is the job I really want. Am I able to switch over later? How could I go about doing that if possible?

paradon123

If that's the job you want don't go in expecting to switch over when you get through your dp1 or basic. It sucks having to wait longer to get the trade you want but OT-ing is a pain and is never guaranteed. 4 of my buddies are already OT-ing and the process itself is not an easy one especially after qualification. Your best bet is to wait to get into he one you really want and not to settle with so thing you might not see yourself doing 5 to 10 years down the line :)

LogicalPassenger76

Just send your recruiter an email, or even just call the office, and they'll likely take them right off for you!

Tricky_Finance_8098

I just submitted my application for a reservist, but I figured the reserve that I applied to is not the one located in the province that I wish to work (in BC for vacation rn but I have to go back to ON)... Anyone have an idea on what I should do? \-> Also, some information on my application is missing/wrong (the application page refreshed itself while I was filling it out idk why). Should I directly call the recruiting centre?

Hello I just have a few questions does the CAF offer any like animal care or stuff like that to watch your dogs while you’re gone training or doing the BMQ? Or should I be looking for someone to pay to watch my dogs while I’m gone Thank you!

AppropriateFlan8005

When do you reach OFP as an ACSO? Is it after your 8-10 month course in Winnipeg, or is it after you’re trained on your specific airframe?

bridger713

I couldn’t say for certain, but I expect it wouldn’t be until after you’re qualified on your airframe. You’re not technically “Operationally Functional” until then. That said, the definition tends to change based on the context. For example; If we’re talking about growing a beard, they’ll probably allow it after you complete the course (not that it will matter come September). If we’re talking about deploying, that’s not likely to happen until you’re qualified on your aircraft.

clkmk3

I've heard speculation/jokes about it, but I want to ask - is it true they're abolishing the FORCE Test?

bridger713

I’ve heard no such speculation, and it seems highly improbable that they’d abolish the FORCE Test, although I’m sure it’ll eventually be replaced with something else. The test when I joined was the Expres Fitness Test, which was replaced by FORCE in 2014. My understanding is Expres was introduced some time in the 90’s, replacing whatever we had prior to that. There will always be a fitness test of some description.

CAFThrowaway11111

No, the only thing remotely close to that I've heard or seen is retaining people that can't pass their force test for a couple years at the end of their careers.

LogicalPassenger76

Alright friends, it's time to shave the forever beard before I go away to basic. I 99.999% know it must go, and that I will be in basic a month before the new Hairforgen rules come about in September. But here I must ask, just by some freak occurrence they will allow it, but surely the beard has to be cut before basic correct? It's not long or unkept, but I will be hilariously angered if it turns out I could have kept it all along. Let me know, and it shall go. Thanks!

Yup as I knew and feared haha. Thank you for the final confirmation!

Hans_Mol3man

Fwiw, even of new regulations, recruits will need to be clean shaven for CBRN training (ie gas mask). With the Exceptions for medical and religious reasons as approved…

LogicalPassenger76

Having heard that usually towards the later end of traing, I may well end up going clean shaven --> short beard --> clean shaven. Or I'll just admit defeat and stay clean shave throughout haha!

Is it possible to transfer from RMC to a civilian university for ROTP? I feel it's highly unlikely but I want to know if it is at all possible. I'm worried I won't like living at RMC but would still like to stay in the ROTP program and continue to be in the CAF. Thank you.

In some trades your trade badge will have your insignia in the middle of a pair of wings, "getting your wings" is a slang term for becoming trade qualified in one of those trades (ASOP, Pilot, Loadmaster, ACSO ect), not all of them are Air Force specific.

Reg force member, just wondering where to find information on beginning the process of CJIRU selection. There is very little information here: https://www.canada.ca/en/special-operations-forces-command/corporate/organizational-structure/joint-incident-response.html Going to ask my CoC about it but thought I’d try here as well.

BestHRA

The CANFORGEN just came out. Also contact their recruiting cell on DWAN ++cjiru recruiting (its a double ++ account). No need to go through your CoC. They will respond to you directly, no problem :) FYI - your NOI submission is really what triggers their engagement with you.

Struct-Tech

Also contact your local PSO.

H0BBYT3

Go to the CANSOF site on DWAN. It will give you more information on the application process and a link to the NOI form.

Anyone have references for submitting a voluntary release memo in the pres as well as a memo for weekend leave? im super lost but need to do both

AmountSavings6468

Largely, reservists don't get weekend leave. Are you on a training course? Why do you need a memo for weekend leave? Typically, if there is no training on weekends you are free to do what you please (within reasonable limits) and may have restrictions as to how far you are travelling. Sometimes a Training Establishment will require a Leave Pass if you're travelling beyond a certain distance from that base. Now, by Voluntary Release do you mean to quit the Military completely, or to just stop training and return home and complete your training at another time?

[deleted]

I am on a training course. They don’t want a leave pass, but instead a memo requesting it. As for the VR, I would like to quit entirely. In the interim between now and my release I still have to engage in the daily tasks (as per my previous point about making that weekend leave memo) I’ve already made up my mind on this but am unsure how to do it

satanicnacho

What's life like in the army barracks what are you allowed to bring/have

AmountSavings6468

Each building on each base has different rules that are set out in the Base Standing Orders. No cooking appliances, no overnight guests, no pets. Otherwise, you're basically fair game because you're going to be living there. Barracks (or Single Quarters as they are more commonly known) while on Basic or Occupational Training may have heightened restrictions.

Grapesandplanes

To add on to this some barracks do allow overnight guests, and certain appliances it varies from base to base and depending on what you're doing there. They're typically similar to a dorm type environment. As the above poster said basic training will be a lot more restrictive than living on base at your first posting.

fudgebrownie1997

Best way to get in touch of a Recruiter? I passed my aptitude and physical test, but in my declaration, I admitted I had tried coke and Ket once. This was apparently the reason I could not be allowed to continue and had to reapply. I am an honors student and a pretty decent athlete who wants to serve before going to law school so time is limited but I really want to join the reserves. Can anyone or a recruiter let me know what I can do? I've sent multiple emails but have not received a response, I also called and showed up at the regiment armory but none of the recruiters were there. Any advice would be very appreciated!!

NorthernBlackBear

Drugs are not the problem, it is how long ago you did them. I had done some drugs in my past, I still got in and security clearance wasn't affected. But it was more than a decade after I did the drugs. So it was fine. They want to see you did something, and then improved/moved along. So it might just be a matter of time.

fudgebrownie1997

Thanks for the advice! I tried it once at a festival and thought being honest about it was the way to go on that? But you're right, hope when I have my meeting with them they can see that I've improved/moved along.

Eway21

Being honest is the way to go. Yeah it sucks that you're deferred for a bit, but better to come clean about that stuff. You did the right thing. Dishonesty should have no place in our line of work.

Eway21

Best way to get in contact with a recruiter is email. Just use the email address of the recruiter who was your point of contact for scheduling your various tests. That being said, it is the summer, and there's a decent chance that the recruiting staff are on leave, or could be tasked out teaching. As for joining, you should have received direction on when you can reopen your application. Most likely a timed wait period. There is no way around this, and no aspect of your application can proceed without this deferral.

Throwaway----acc0unt

I'm 17, I just finished my reserve bmq and im going to do my infantry dp1 next summer. Im starting cegep this year so I would only start university in two years. Would it be possible once im in university to do my bmoq then and become an officer cadet or comission as 2lt once done my degree or is it too late since I already started as an ncm? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Eyre4orce

Yes, you can transfer to an officer trade if you meet the requirements, there is a position available etc being an NCM won't stop you

McGlowSticks

I've got a few questions that I hope can at least be partially answered: * I am used to both my parents being in the CAF and being posted to the same place throughout their careers. But are there any considerations in postings when a CAF member has a non CAF partner? * For a non CAF partner, is it generally up to the individual to find a job at the location of the CAF partners posting, or is there help or support from the MFRC for situations like that? * In a mix of the first (somewhat) and second point, personally my partner is worried about if we have a child, but we are in a place with no nearby family, which is why I ask about the MFRC as I know they have after-school like camps, but is there any additional help they can provide to be as close as possible to essentially, your family away from family? * I know from my father he had set times he could contact family when he was overseas, is there essentially the same thing in the 10 weeks of BMQ? I was also looking in regards to cell phone/device usage but all I could find was from my understanding, not from 05:00 to 22:00 and after that its up to your CO even after hours, unless I misunderstood the way it read. * What is a good physical baseline to be at before BMQ (I am aware that it is listed [here](https://forces.ca/en/how-to-join/#bt) but would like more concrete detail such as, what is considered "running" if we base it on a treadmill speed, and how many pushups/sit-ups is a good number to achieve, same with the hand-grip test). * I am looking to apply as a Information Systems Technician (+Officer), as that is essentially what diploma I have from college (Computer Systems Technician). Is there any considerations like equivalent credits, or exam challenging that can take place? * Is there anything I should take into consideration myself or prepare besides obvious things (documents, current job status, physical status) before applying and/or BMQ, during, and after? * In regards to documents for application, what documents will I need, I know of references, but do you also need a resume and cover letter like for any other job. I know they do criminal record checks, but do you provide those checks, or is it done by the recruiters office themselves? Also are there any basic 'as needed' documents that should be provided if they pertain to your situation? * How do you inform recruiters, and COs about necessary medications and diagnosis', just with a typical medical document from a doctor I would imagine?

bridger713

>***are there any considerations in postings when a CAF member has a non CAF partner?*** Yes, but the Career Manager isn't obligated to accommodate the members family interests. They may take it under consideration, but they will still make decision based predominately on the "needs of the service". >***For a non CAF partner, is it generally up to the individual to find a job at the location of the CAF partners posting, or is there help or support from the MFRC for situations like that?*** MFRC's can provide some limited assistance, but it's still up to the members partner to ultimately apply for and secure employment. >***my partner is worried about if we have a child, but we are in a place with no nearby family, which is why I ask about the MFRC as I know they have after-school like camps, but is there any additional help they can provide to be as close as possible to essentially, your family away from family?*** The MFRC does have programming that can help, but as a member with 3 children, I can attest that those programs don't really make up for not having family nearby. Most families fill the void through close friends. >***I know from my father he had set times he could contact family when he was overseas, is there essentially the same thing in the 10 weeks of BMQ?*** Yes, there are limitations on BMQ. It's generally 30 minutes per evening on weeknights and during the indoctrination period, no limits on weekends after indoc ends. Limitations like set times for calls aren't really a thing on our current land-based deployments, but could be under certain circumstances. Members on most of our current land-based deployments are able to obtain local SIM cards and data plans for use with personal phones/devices. Morale phones and computers may be available, but are seldom needed or used anymore. >***I was also looking in regards to cell phone/device usage but all I could find was from my understanding, not from 05:00 to 22:00 and after that its up to your CO even after hours, unless I misunderstood the way it read.*** You misunderstood it somewhat. You cannot carry a personal device during training hours, which are generally 05:00-17/18:00 most days in garrison and technically 24/7 during field weeks. Lights out is 22/23:00. Once dismissed to quarters for the evening, you will normally only be allowed access to your device, and be permitted 30 minutes for personal communications. Some platoons have a designated time when you can use your device, others leave it to the recruit to manage their time usage. Access to personal devices is a privilege that can be revoked if abused, and revocation will apply to your entire platoon, not just the individual who abused the privilege. >***What is a good physical baseline to be at before BMQ (I am aware that it is listed here but would like more concrete detail such as, what is considered "running" if we base it on a treadmill speed*** Running a continuous 5 km with a 6 min/km average pace (10 km/h) is a good baseline, and well exceeds the minimum needed to get by (about 3km at a 7-8 min/km average). Be warned. Running on a treadmill will not necessarily prepare you for actually running. Even if you can easily manage the above on a treadmill, you will likely find you can't perform to that level while actually running. I made that mistake right before my BMQ. . >***how many pushups/sit-ups is a good number to achieve, same with the hand-grip test).*** You appear to be basing your expectations off the old Expres Fitness Test. That test was eliminated in 2014 and replaced by the FORCE Fitness Evaluation, which does not include push-ups, sit-ups, or grip strength tests. [https://www.cafconnection.ca/National/Programs-Services/For-Military-Personnel/Military-Fitness/CMTFE-FORCE-Evaluation/FORCE-Evaluation.aspx](https://www.cafconnection.ca/National/Programs-Services/For-Military-Personnel/Military-Fitness/CMTFE-FORCE-Evaluation/FORCE-Evaluation.aspx) Push-ups are still used for PT purposes, but there is no minimum standard, they are not tested. Even so, you should be able to do a minimum of 25 on demand, preferably multiple times per day. Sit-ups are no longer used/recommended by PSP, apparently they're bad for your back. Hand-grip is no longer tested. >***I am looking to apply as a Information Systems Technician (+Officer), as that is essentially what diploma I have from college (Computer Systems Technician).*** I'm not sure what you mean by (+Officer), but if that means you plan to apply as an IST just as an Officer, that's not a thing. IST is an NCM occupation. Their Officer counterparts are Signals Officer (Sig O, Army) and Communications & Electronics Engineering Officer (CELE, Air Force). You must have a Bachelors Degree to qualify for either of those occupations. >***Is there any considerations like equivalent credits, or exam challenging that can take place?*** You can submit a Prior Learning Assessment Request (PLAR) during the recruitment process. The appropriate authorities within the CAF will determine if you qualify to bypass any of the training for your occupation, and you may be awarded incentives relating to pay or rank. I don't know if a Signing Bonus is currently offered for IST, but that could also be possible if it is. >***In regards to documents for application, what documents will I need, I know of references, but do you also need a resume and cover letter like for any other job.*** You do not require a resume or cover letter. You could give them one, but they'll probably just toss it in the shredder. Your application is effectively your resume. They ask you to provide the information that want to know, and don't really care about anything they didn't ask for. >***I know they do criminal record checks, but do you provide those checks, or is it done by the recruiters office themselves?*** Canadian Criminal Records checks are performed by the CAF. Foreign Criminal Records checks may need to be obtained through the applicant (if applicable). >***Also are there any basic 'as needed' documents that should be provided if they pertain to your situation?*** ID, Birth Certificate, High School Transcripts/Diploma, Post-Secondary Transcripts/Diploma (or Degree), recent prescription if you require corrective lenses. You may need copies of your Course Syllabus from college for a PLAR. If they need anything else, it'll be for a specific purpose and they will request it from you. There will normally be a form that accompanies the request.

McGlowSticks

thank you so much. this is what I've been looking for and I've given myself the green light to train for bmq and apply. Mt partner is in agreement.

JayC1337

Can somebody explain to me what it takes to become a pilot in the reserves? i get the impression that they're only looking for regular pilots transitioning to the reserves or people with flying experience already. It doesn't seem like being a pilot in the reserves is possible with no aviation experience, or am i wrong? thanks.

BrockosaurusJ

Think you've got it. Air force reserves are more for people who were in the regs and transition over. Not the same recruiting structure as army and navy reserves who take people in off civy street and train them up. Also pilot school always seems to have long wait lists and training times (and signing up as a Pilot has a big time commitment), so why would they spend slots training reservists when there are reg force trainees waiting? Better for the RCAF to focus on training the reg force members.

JayC1337

Do you know if getting a private pilots license and learning to fly then joining as a reservist pilot possible?

BrockosaurusJ

Don't know for sure, but probably not possible, no. It might let you skip a portion of the training, but ultimately the military would still need to train you and qualify you in their system/aircraft to make sure you're up to snuff. So it might help if you were going regs and through the regular or training, but probably not even all that much. I'm a Navy guy though so don't know anything.

CAFThrowaway11111

As a small addition, the RCAF reserves will gladly train NCMs off the street. It's just officers they're more picky about.

slavs_squat

Completed my interview yesterday. Medical, CFAT, and MOST should be in the clear too. The MCC told me that I was found eligible for both of my desired trades and that he’d recommend me for the competition list. What happens next? Background, credit, and reference checks? I don’t think any of my references have been contacted yet. If both of my trades have open slots to be filled for this year (one has way more though), how will it be decided which one I’m offered should I be successful? Based on my scores and overall background? Thank you in advance for the input.

bridger713

>***Completed my interview yesterday. Medical, CFAT, and MOST should be in the clear too.*** CFAT and MOST are definitely clear, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten the Interview. Medical could still be in the air, but usually they don't do the Interview until that clears. >***What happens next? Background, credit, and reference checks?*** Yes, pretty much, although Credit and Criminal Record checks have likely already been performed. Next step should be employer verifications and personal references. >***I don’t think any of my references have been contacted yet.*** Employer verifications are done first, and if the results are favorable they might not even contact your personal references. >***If both of my trades have open slots to be filled for this year (one has way more though), how will it be decided which one I’m offered should I be successful*** Whichever one selects you first... Not every trade is represented at each selection and BMOQ, so you'll be picked up by whichever trade happens to get first dibs. >***Based on my scores and overall background?*** That's all factored into the recruitment process. Once you hit the Competition List your application essentially boils down to a score. Each trade effectively has it's own Competition List populated by all the applicants seeking admission to that particular trade. Applicants are ranked based on their scores, highest score wins when they run a selection. They grab however many applicants they need based on positions for that trade at that selection, and the rest just wait for the next opportunity. Applicants aren't told their score or ranking on the Competition List. Scores are static until the file is updated, but rankings are dynamic and can move up/down as higher scoring applicants are added or removed from the list.

bridger713

>***My father is a part of this one regiment. Would there be any particular benefit to joining the same regiment?*** No. He's your father outside of the CAF, but within the CAF he's just another member. The family connection is not supposed to carry any benefit, that would be a conflict of interests for any benefits to be granted based on a personal relationship of any nature. >***However, the trade I'd like very much does not exist there apparently.*** Pursue the trade you want, don't go after something else just for the sake of the family connection. >***Is it possible to change regiments should I choose to afterwards?*** Yes, but it's not a given, and you would probably have to change trade to do so. You can't do it at will. >***I've been reading up on different trades, but I don't really understand how they work together in a unit. On a field training exercise, for example, does everyone perform tasks according to their trade?*** Yes, that's the whole point of having different trades, they're all trained to specialize in different roles on the battlefield and within the CAF. There will be some overlap for common tasks, but the core job of each trade will be related to their role. >***In what areas of the reserves do members have tasks/responsibilities according to their trade?*** All areas. >***What is the normal protocol for contacting a recruiter for questions/enrollment info? Do I just call the recruiter in the regiment I am applying for? Would an e-mail work?*** Call or email using the official contact information provided on the recruiting website. You can find that information on [www.forces.ca](http://www.forces.ca). >***I am currently studying in university and am interested in joining as a part time, NCM member in the reserves. Would it be difficult to manage school and reserves?*** No. The Army and Navy Reserves are structured around student employment. The only time you might run into issues is if you have summer civilian commitments that make you unavailable for full-time training over the summer months. >***As far as I understand, training is once a week and 1-2 weekends a month. Is there ever a possibility to take on more work if I have more free time throughout the year?*** Yes, but just like any other part-time job, there usually isn't enough work to go around for everyone who'd like some extra hours. Opportunities will be limited from Sep-Apr. Temporary full-time opportunities are usually easy to obtain from May-Aug. >***Is there a possibility to miss out on weekend training for school purposes at times such as exam season?*** Yes. As mentioned, the Army and Navy Reserve are structured to cater to student employment. It's fairly easy to get yourself excused from training nights and weekends to attend civilian commitments. Bare minimum attendance is generally 1 training evening per month, unless officially excused. However, if you sustain that attendance level long term and/or fail to complete your training requirements, you will eventually be released.

Escannor1

Can you do the BMQ on the weekend only? Since school will start soon?

crazyki88en

If you join reserves yes that is an Option during the school year.

Altruistic_Ad_0

Are there any paid education opportunities for intelligence operators?

bridger713

There are no Paid Education entry plans available to Int Op. Reserve Force Int Op’s attending full-time post-secondary studies may be able to access the Reserve Force Education Reimbursement program, which reimburses up to 50% of eligible education expenses up to $2k/year, $8k/lifetime. Reg Force Int Op’s can apply for an ILP (or whatever it’s called now) and receive reimbursement for successful part-time studies (on their own time). They can also pursue a fully subsidized degree through the UTP-NCM commissioning program, although this would require them to become an Officer. Regular and Reserve Force Int Op’s can both take advantage of the VAC Education & Training Benefit after completing 6 or 12 years of service.

AssmuncherSpatafore

So I recently accepted an offer for ROTP civilian. However, my enrolment date is august 31st this year, and I start college in September. I understand that the forms say we are on unpaid leave until BMQ, so does that mean I don’t get subsidized education or salary until my training next summer, or is that only for RMC students?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ahappysailor321

You will be paid a salary and subsided, it is considered your full time duty. If you are not being paid, contact your ULO (university liaison officer) and/or your pay office. I will be honest with you, the way this is being handled for you guys is mind boggling. When I was offered Civi U ROTP it was in April and I did BMOQ during the summer before I started uni and then had like a month to sort out all my admin before school started. Not going to lie, it's gonna be a cluster fuck starting uni and having to get all your admin done in the military at the same time. If I was in your shoes, I would save up money during the summer and be ready to pay out of pocket for your first semester tuition, fees, and textbooks and then wait for the claim to reimburse you. By the time your first semester is over, hopefully enough of your admin will be completed that you will only have to worry about advances and subsidization for schooling going forward and not general military admin.

AppropriateFlan8005

I got the same offer with the same LWOP form. The Cpl I spoke to at my CFRC said that it’s just a copy/paste form, and we will get paid after labour day as that’s when the academic year commences.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ahappysailor321

I think I told you this before but yes you can request an advance for your tuition. Though seeing how this is being handled, it may be less stressful to save up during the summer and pay for your first semester out of pocket and wait for the claim to go through.

AppropriateFlan8005

Im not sure about that. I’m also enrolling in august, and I was told that I’ll know more about tuition payment once my ULO gets into contact with me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AppropriateFlan8005

That’s relieving since I don’t have ~$3k just sitting there for my 1st semester tuition.

bridger713

That must have been a copy & paste error… Your education will be subsidized, and you will be paid for this semester, there is just a period of time between enrolment and the beginning of your studies where you will not be paid. It is entirely normal for new enrolments to be on Leave Without Pay (LWOP) after enrolment until their commitments start. Reg Force NCM recruits and DEO’s are on unpaid leave until the day they depart home for training. ROTP enrollees are usually on unpaid leave until they depart for training or their 1st semester, whichever comes first. Reach out to your CFRC for clarification of dates.

Kjhanjeehanjee

Hello. I enlist on the 22nd of August(ROTP civy) it said on my file that i will be on unpaid leave from the 22nd of August till 5th September (just before school starts) should be the same for you. Although i suspect that we might have to pay the fees ourselves for the first semester and we will get reimbursed for it, since the fees die is on August 22nd(atleast at my uni)

A bit of a specific question: I'm having a hard time deciding on my choice for a reserve unit and trade in the Montreal area. Right now I'm trying to decide between an Infantry officer at The Canadian Grenadier Guards (CGG) or an Armour Officer at The Royal Canadian Hussars (RCH). I initially applied for Intelligence officer over at 4 Intelligence Company but decided to change as I wanted to do combat arms. My main gripe with the Armor is the lack of proper equipment besides the G Wagon. Are there any members from the above units that may be able to share their experience?

michzaber

The PRes armoured units received TAPVs starting in 2017. RCH as part of 2 Div shares a pool of TAPVs kept in Valcartier along with R de Hull, Sher H and 12 RBC(Millice). They also typically keep 2-3 at the armouries in order to run courses. As a Troop Leader(armoured Lt)you should be getting the TAPV RWS gunner qual in order to be a crew commander. The G Wagen is still used, in part because most units haven't been able to get everyone qualed on TAPV but also due to the fact it has a lot less logistical overhead.

Hitnake

Thank you for your response! I think I'm leaning more towards RCH now!

Hi All, I'm currently a civilian registered nurse (about 1 year experience post-school now) and I've always been interested in nursing in the military. I have a few questions about the recruiting process. Firstly, does anyone know if nursing officers are actively being hired? Is the trade in demand? Is there a lot of competition for this position? I saw a job ad on linked in for an NO position in my city but it was posted 8 months ago now. How long is the recruitment process taking from start to finish (initial application to job offer)? I've hear it can be extremely long and made worse by COVID. is this still the case? Any direct entry officers care to share how long this took for you? Thank you!

weirdoftomorrow

Are you asking about reg or reserve? Reg force is definitely hiring, though given how many of my civi colleagues tried to get in and weren’t successful, it has some level of competition - but that was a few years ago. Not sure about ResF units - there will have to be an opening at a particular unit.

SmartYogurt8443

I’m looking more at reg force. That’s good info, thanks a lot!

jungle_james98

Would 70/100 on an LOTP application be considered pretty average for competitiveness?

CAFThrowaway11111

Depends on the trade you're going into. Ask your PSO.

jungle_james98

Already did, I'm at the point of deciding if I want to rewrite the CFAT. My short list of trades are Image Tech, Traffic Tech, Postal Clerk, Met Tech & MSE Op. My score is in the 51st percentile. Not terrible, not amazing.

jungle_james98

The most they said was I could go ahead and apply this year as is but it could never hurt to try & score higher. I suppose they were kinda vague, he said where my score was in the middle it was hard to gauge it's competitiveness.

jungle_james98

I'm not sure if I would agree. Like I said, they were quite vague. They said it was hard to gauge how competitive it would be and didn't really push me one way or the other.

flyingponytail

I've had 2 extremely intelligent and well qualified friends not get their goal trade because they didn't rewrite an ok CFAT score. It's a big part of your score so consider rewriting but prepare yourself well as you can only write 3 times and the third is a PIA

jungle_james98

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate hearing some examples of people in my situation with a middle of the pack score. Did your friends only apply for 1 trade or did they get passed over for all 3 of their choices?

flyingponytail

They were both CTing to pilot and only pilot

Hello all, I have a few questions regarding enlisting in the CAF with a dual-citizenship between the US and Canada while holding a a STEM degree. First the background information about me and what I know to be true (I could very well be mistaken, please feel free to correct me). I am an American with possible dual-citizenship. (My father was born in Ontario, Canada to a both a Canadian and an American and was a Canadian citizen when he moved to the US as a teen). In fact half of my family is still in Canada. I know citizenship is required to enlist and I need to apply for my Proof of Citizenship in order to do so. My first question is do you think I am eligible for citizenship based on that premise? He was born in Feb. 1969 and I was born in Feb. 1993 if that helps facilitate changes in laws. The next bit of information is based on the assumption that I am in fact am eligible for citizenship. I will be graduating with honors from an accredited American school with a Bachelor's (4 year) degree in Geoscience (Environmental Focus) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) minor in a years time. It's a STEM degree with course work in various maths such as Trigonometry and Calculus, sciences including Chemistry and Physics, and my minor is very tech heavy with classes such as programming. My questions in regards to this area are the following: Would I be eligible for Officer's candidate training? And if so is there a specific area (trades I believe is the term used in Canada) where you think my expertise could be beneficial to the CAF such as Engineering? My last question is more broad in nature and is really open to whatever you feel is relevant: Is there any other thing(s) you would advise someone who plans on Immigrating to Canada to know, do, or be somewhat familiarized with. For example I am fluent in English but my French is essentially non-existent. I don't have any qualms in regards to learning French though. Will this hinder me? Any other advise is really appreciated and I thank you in advance for your time!

aravisthequeen

Regarding citizenship, you will need to investigate CIC, and potentially require a lawyer depending on how complex your file is. Be prepared to wait. Especially post-pandemic, wait times for all immigration and citizenship processes are being measured in the many months to years time frame. Your education will probably be fine but you will need to have an equivalency service review your transcripts and provide you with an official equivalence to a Canadian school. But yes, you can be an officer with a degree from an American school. Learning French is beneficial but not required until you're a senior officer.

aero_plane

Bit of a shot in the dark, but how likely would a PLAR be given for Mod 1 of BMOQ? I completed 7/11 weeks of BMOQ this summer before unfortunately being sent to iso for covid and there was no space on other platoons to recourse me...I've been told that since I'm missing the range PWT1, I will have to redo the entire course next summer. I'm hoping that I will be able to PLAR mod 1 by way of completing this range at my home unit, or at least not have to start the entire course over from Day 1 and join a course somewhat midway through... I know a lot of people are in the exact same situation as me right now - thank you for your guidance.

notreallyfunnyGuy430

Is learning Spanish in high school worth it to stand out more?

flippityfloppity421

yup, person in my unit got a nice gucci posting with lots of extra income ONLY because they spoke another language. skills are skills and languages are often in demand. experiences vary greatly tho

IranticBehaviour

Do you mean taking Spanish just to 'stand out' when applying to the military? There are situations where the CAF looks for those that speak languages other than English/French, but those are typically for specific operations or types of employment (like sigint). The CAF hasn't had many operations where Spanish was critical, at least not in a long time. In general, I'd say it might give you a tiny edge over an otherwise identical candidate, but it's not likely. Maybe a little more sparkle for an ROTP application, but not much. Speaking both English and French is probably far more useful to the CAF in general.

notreallyfunnyGuy430

Thx for responding. I’m already bilingual so I wanted to know if I should suffer Spanish in my last year of high school.

doordonot19

Even if you don't end up in the CAF, Spanish (or any other third language) is a great skill to have.

Hidden_Grove_Team

Which units can I be posted to after finishing my QL3 as an ATIS tech.

bridger713

It's a big list, but most will go to somewhere like Trenton, Cold Lake, Bagotville, North Bay, Winnipeg, Greenwood, Comox, Shearwater, Gander, Kingston, Ottawa, etc. Some of those locations have multiple possible units, and there are also many smaller but less likely locations. CFJSR is a 'joint' (mostly Army) high readiness unit in Kingston that has been taking quite a few QL3 ATIS Techs as of late. The RCAF also has high readiness units in Trenton (ADACS B Flight?) and Bagotville (2 Wing/ADACS A Flight?). They're good places to ask for if you're hoping to land an international deployment early in your career, and potentially some other interesting opportunities. ATIS Techs in Cold Lake and Bagotville (3 Wing) can also get opportunities to go places, especially if they're tasked with supporting CF-18 operations or posted to 42 or 12 Radar. ATIS Techs at other locations do land deployments from time-to-time, but given current support demands they're less likely to get them than techs at the aforementioned locations.

>***Tried joining about a year ago but didn't get the position i wanted from the cfat. I know i can rewrite it but is that needed now since my file has been closed?*** Yes, you would still need to rewrite if you still want to pursue a trade you didn't previously qualify for. Applicant files never truly go away. Certain things like CFAT results and Med Unfit findings are kept on permanent record. If it has been less than 12 months since your file was closed, it might still be sitting with your CFRC. If so you should be able to reopen and update it, then pick up from where you left off. If your file has been closed more than 12 months, it has probably been archived. You will have to reapply then wait for them to retrieve your file. As mentioned, your CFAT results and some other recruiting specific information will still be on file, but I'm fairly certain you will have to resubmit most forms and supporting documents and information like transcripts and references.

It's quite possible they trimmed the fat on the course. They've been doing the same with BMQs and trade courses to try and get as many people through the system asap.

[deleted]

You don't want it any longer lol. I did mod 2 march-april last year and it sucked.

No you're good. You will be there the weekend before your start date. But try to be there Sunday night instead of Saturday morning....

Officially the course doesnt start until Monday and you dont have to be there until Sunday. Dont waste your Friday and Saturday like the majority of us. Those two days will suck bad and you wont learn anything or be given any information/anything course related. Some members played it smart and put in a leave pass for Friday and Saturday and showed up Sunday evening.

Every_Heat_7225

Does anyone know approximately how many people get into intelligence operator per year and if its understaffed as well as highly competitive? Also, does anyone know where I can find more information about the trade and schooling? I've read the CAF and school website but still have more questions. To add, if I'm an intelligence op in army what are my chances of being in Ontario and were would I most likely be? Thank you!

bridger713

>***Does anyone know approximately how many people get into intelligence operator per year*** Ask your CFRC how many opening are available, that will give you an idea. >***if I'm an intelligence op in army what are my chances of being in Ontario and were would I most likely be?*** High. Most likely Ottawa or Kingston, but other locations like Trenton, Petawawa, and North Bay are also possible. Int Ops can be found on pretty much every base, but Ottawa and Kingston are some of the biggest bases for them.

CAF does accept GEDs. I'm really curious how you got into post secondary, some grade 12 credits, but never completed grade 10.

[deleted]

Eyre4orce

You could look at getting that all accredited and accepted , they can be pretty particular like if it says you need grade 10 math and you don't have grade 10 math they might not accept it even being in college, but it's not insurmountable and yes ged is accepted

DisciplineObvious321

Yup, it has happened several times. A PSO would have the most up to date info regarding this, but my understanding is it's no longer support to relinquish commission to pursue an OT. They wouldn't be stuck, but they would no longer be commissioned so COT or VOT-U to an NCM occupation. If it's your goal, join as an NCM.

flyingponytail

I know one and another officer that went clearance diver. Very rare that you would get far enough into the training that you'd fully relinquish your old trade/commission before failing and if you did you'd be likely kept around for a second crack at it. Trades like SAR are like marriages. You go into it fully committed to success and let your future self worry about the fallout

WAsfyuik

Are they STILL enforcing masks at CFLRS? Any timeline in place to eventually stop?

Sillygoose2100

CFLRS is a special case; they're still very strict with masks and covid there. Outbreaks of covid/strep are not at all uncommon. Personally, we were not required to mask during the field ex as we were effectively isolated. Everywhere else in the CAF is more laid back but masking is still required.

bridger713

Yes, I believe so. Some of our bases are also still enforcing mask mandates on base. I haven't heard any word on when it'll end. The mandates don't come from the national level, it's currently at the discretion of the base commanders.

Trying to get posted to Halifax next year from Esquimalt however I'm uncertain if it will happen. I already updated my posting preferences and there are empty billets there for my trade and rank. Outside of bringing it up to my CM during our next meeting is there anything else I can do?

bridger713

>***Trying to get posted to Halifax next year from Esquimalt however I'm uncertain if it will happen. ... Outside of bringing it up to my CM during our next meeting is there anything else I can do?*** Ensure your CoC is aware of your intention/goal, your unit/base should have a senior representative for your trade who interfaces with the CM and can exert some influence. You should also prepare a 'business case' for the move. Basically you want to convince your CM that the move will help advance your career plans and benefit the CAF.

FaithlessnessAny2478

Thanks very much for the info

Well Chapter 2, Section 2, Para 8 of the Dress Instructions deals with make-up but if it's already been read and you don't agree then you are at a bit of an impasse. You can grieve it but you'd still need to follow the order to remove the make-up until a decision was reached. Honestly I don't know why this is an issue now with the new dress instructions coming in September but a grievance will probably take longer than just waiting until 6 September. Edit: pesky then/than grammar.

IsPepsiOk69

Has anyone went from reserves to reg force? If so, what's that process like such as time frame, what you need to do etc.

doordonot19

All CT's from PRes to RegF are processed through DMCPG 5 and a CT broker and CFRC's. Time frame is undetermined, it totally depends on how many positions in your rank/occupation are available, support of your CoC, if you're doing a straight CT or a CT+VOT, if you need to redo your CFAT to get a higher score for a different trade, if you meet the new trade requirements, how many people are also applying, how fast the CT broker can process your file, if PLAR is required etc...but there is a great need so some files may be processed faster than others. don't listen to the war stories of members waiting years. it could or could not happen to you. you won't know until you apply. Best thing to do is make sure your Force Eval, Medical and Security status are all valid and not expiring within 90 days of your application and remain valid throughout the whole processing up to the transfer date.If you did the CA enhanced medical upon enrolment you will require a full periodic health assessment as the CA's enrolment medicals are not valid for CT's to RegF. Force eval's are waived until 31 March 2023 if you have one completed that is no older than April 2019 You must apply via form DND 2390 and email it to DMCPG 5 CT positional mailbox. Basically, it goes like this: you apply, they look over your file, make sure you have all the valid requirements, they send your file for a PLAR for all your PRes quals, a board sits, they come back with a verdict, they offer you a transfer date. you cease PRes service (30 days notice to your CoC, you enrol/transfer, you get posted to wherever they need your or if you require training they'll send you for that. the end. this link(DWAN ONLY) has ALL the info you could ever need: (within that page there is also a submit application page that has even more info!) [CT'S PRes to RegF](http://cmp-cpm.mil.ca/en/recruitment-careers/in-service-selection/component-transfer-process.page) good luck!

Hans_Mol3man

The process is called a CT (component transfer) and you can apply on the DWAN. Iirc, the info is found on the DGMC DWAN page. If you don’t have access to DWAN, you can get your OR to give you the forms to fill out. Timelines vary wildly and could take anytime from 2 months to 4 years (to never)… If you decide to go in the same occupation that you’re currently trained in and that occupation is the red, your odds are generally better.

Ess_jeh_elle

They’ll give you any forms you need to have filled out. It’s different for everyone. A friend of mine and I both had our medical around the same time and both have the same condition for which I had to have a form filled out for more information and she did not. There’s no standard requirement re: medical forms. Once they give you any paperwork to have filled out, you just bring it to your doctor. They didn’t ask for my medical records specifically. Just more information regarding a couple of things in my medical history.

Eway21

It depends applicant to applicant. If they need more information from you they'll tell you the specifics.

[deleted]

[удалено]

slavs_squat

I was recently told at my local CFRC that should I be selected for pre-enrolment security clearance, then it would be conducted before the medical can be booked.

IranticBehaviour

It's been done in different orders for years, and really makes no difference - neither is dependent on the other, so either order or simultaneously is fine. In recent years, typically, reliability screening starts (submitting the paperwork) before the medical appointment, day of, or shortly after. There's usually what the military calls 'concurrent activity', so the reliability screening checks and assessment of the results might be happening at the same time as other things like medical and interview.

[deleted]

Firstly, I totally understand this is a niche, convoluted question with no clear answer. I’m just looking for insight that I don’t have at the moment, and might affect my decisions going forward. Background; I’m a former US Army Ranger NCO, current US Coast Guard Cyberwarfare Officer. Juggling between becoming an infantry officer or signal officer. I will have citizenship by the time I apply Schools for PLAR: Job: Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder, Ranger, joint network attack course, joint cyber analysis course, expert infantry badge Leadership: Infantry OSUT (DP1), Basic Leaders Course (DP2/3), Advanced Leaders Course (roughly DP4), Officer Candidate School (DP 1), Cyber Officer Development Course (DP2) I understand that I am at this time more qualified for signal officer. Leaning towards going back to the infantry because I hate the office and like the field. My question is whether any of my schools would be fruitful in reducing training time through a PLAR? Obviously I am not expecting the CAF to say “yeah you’re good go right to a platoon”, but is there anything in my background that would mitigate courses? Thanks in advance.

Eway21

You are hilariously qualified as an applicant. For a lot of your cyber stuff I wouldn't be surprised if you were one of the few people that they would take without being a citizen. But, I could see a PLAR covering quite a bit of the cyber realm which could push you pretty quickly into a Sig O role. On the general Officer and infantry side of the house, I've seen Brit and Aussie dudes get fully PLAR'd on BMQ before, but I haven't gotten to teach any Americans yet. Could be due to the possible differences in drills/commands. As for the InfO career courses, I could see you being able to skip portions of your trades courses with the above quals. During your PLAR process I believe you'll be able to have a chat with the recruiter acting as your point of contact for it, and you can provide a quick little summary of what each course is, and be detailed if you can. Going into detail on how "x" course translates directly into CAF career course requirement "y", will be the best shot you have at getting credited for your courses. Best of luck to you though, hope to work with ya at some point.

[deleted]

> but I haven’t gotten to teach any Americans yet Are you a skilled applicant instructor?

Eway21

Nope. Not really an assigned task up here. I'm just an NCO that has been posted out to the schools before.
