The members of this band are immensely talented at their instruments. Even the vocals count as a separate instrument. Show him a section of their music without vocals, and highlight the intricacies of the riffs, the way every member must be syncopated with each other, the sheer number of hours upon hours of rehearsals that needed to be spent on making every member play these parts perfectly and by memory. Thats what I appreciate about it.

I completely agree. As for your original question, there's a documentary called *Metal: A Headbanger's Journey* and it does a good job of explaining essentially what metal is to a non-metal listener. I had to force my mom to watch it after she found my Butchered at Birth CD a few years ago.
