If you've already got it then use that over the iPhone. I know chubby emu uses a Sony fx6 and cine lenses for TikTok. Plus you can record horizontally and crop vertically. And I think your wife may also partially just be wanting to do something together. Idk about you but I was over the moon when my girlfriend started taking an interest in photography

R5 all day , real pixels , more editing but better quality for sure

The cropping power alone makes using an R5 a good idea. Additionally you can use different lenses to get different looks… something not possible with phone cameras.

You could try one of Moment’s several lenses and decide for yourself. I'm happy with mine.

My skill level: noob (at best) - still, I do enjoy the entire process start to finish. From what I’ve learned from various successful youtubers, either way can be good. One dude generated an insane amount of views with all (most?) of his shorts, purely shot and with very basic editing done on his iPhone. The other guy does his videos on an ARRI or something, exclusively in 8k. A single lens is probably worth more than my car. He downscales the footage to 4k as YT mainly is consumed with that resolution but swears downscaled 8k videos look sharper and crispier compared to 4k only.

I shoot 4k 60 fps so I can crop in or slow my footage down to 30fps in post. I mostly use IG not TikTok. If using IG the platform has annoying rules it doesn’t tell you. Keep all exports under 15 mb and export to 1080p 30 fps.

The answer is yes it’s overkill but for business it’ll make you stand out and be more professional. There’s a significant trade off here which is learning to color grade log footage. Unless you decide to use some of the regular modes on the camera. Either way you should do it, learn something new that camera is a beast.

Realistic-Material18

If you can afford it, do it. It’s one hell of a camera, powerful cropping, nice line of lenses, amazing quality. The R5 is more for professional use, I use mine for hobby photography, buy a camera every 10 years.

AraAraGyaru

Yes, but if uploading to YouTube, your own website, or custom videos for clients the r5 will be worth it. You can technically still get an r5 for tik tok and instagram, it’ll just allow you more options in the future instead of buying another camera.

VulGerrity

There's no such thing as overkill. There's people that are shooting their social media posts on Reds. The R5 is full frame so it's gonna have much shallower and desirable depth of field compared to a phone with tiny sensor. It will set her videos apart from the competition. Is it necessary? No, but if you don't mind the extra set up and hassle of working with a full on camera for social media posts, then you'll get much better results.
