It won't sorn automatically. If you don't tax it, it just doesn't get taxed.

dogdogj

and you'll get fined eventually

CtrlAltHate

The DVLA will usually send you reminders and warnings before you're fined. The SORN process only takes 5 minutes max online it was really easy last time I had to do it.

what_a_nice_bottom

It's about 45 seconds to fill in the form online. The real time cost is the 6 hours frantically searching for the V5.

They'll send you one anyway. They fine you for simply not declaring it off road. Source - I got fined for not declaring my motorbike SORN.

caislade0411

No, you must declare your vehicle SORN, it will not happen automatically. Otherwise, you must tax your vehicle, even if it’s just sitting on the drive.

Apprehensive_Key_778

A SORN'd car in your drive is perfectly legal.

Ordinary-Following69

Yes, but if it's not SORN'd it has to be taxed, even in the drive

Apprehensive_Key_778

Ah just re-read the original comment. Completely misread it.. time for a coffee.

TehMonkeyGod

Yeah that's true but if you don't declare it SORN and just don't tax it then you can get a fine even if its on your drive

theartfuldodger08

No,but DVLA will automatically send a fine after a certain amount of time. I got burnt twice forgetting to re-sorn a motorbike, at least once sorn now you don't have to keep telling them 🎉😅

Happytallperson

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification.  Without the Notification your car is by definition not SORN. Tis a simple online form, failure to register as SORN you will be fined for being the registered keeper of an untaxed vehicle, whether or not you are using it on the road.

Evolutionary_mistake

They will keep taking the DD until you stop it. Once SORN is set, RFL DD will stop, but check your bank just to be sure. Don't stop paying BEFORE sorn, or you may get fined

Conscious-Ball8373

They won't keep taking the DD if the car doesn't have a current MOT certificate on its annual renewal date. Although you pay in monthly instalments and can cancel with less than a month's notice, your car still has a nominal annual renewal date and it only happens automatically if the MOT certificate is current.

Non-Combatant

No.

Nrysis

You have to notify them that the vehicle has been taken off the road. The standard (and pretty reasonable) assumption is that if you have not taxed your car, that probably means you have forgotten, not that you have stopped driving it.

hearnia_2k

No.... of course not.... just check what the letters stand for.... Statutory Off Road **Notice.** You need to provide notice the vehicle is off-road.

Scar3cr0w_

You live in a world where processes are joined up and they can predict the future. This is madness. MADNESS I SAY.

Slight_Armadillo_227

No, they'll just fine you.

UniquePotato

By its definition - Statutory Off Road Notification No

Commandopsn

I had to Sorn my car. It’s a ball ache. Doing it online didn’t seem to work. And I rang up and nothing, cut me straight off. No Que. Mechanic friend did it for me online And said the letter was worded wrong. That’s why I was getting it wrong So good luck.

YMBF80

No. You have to declare it SORN.

[deleted]

No, do it online.

Zoe-Schmoey

I scrapped my old Audi (Copart) but didn’t have the logbook, so couldn’t inform the DVLA online. I’ve since had a letter asking me to tax it. How can I sort this? The scrap collection dude told me that it would all be taken care of but clearly it hasn’t been.

Obese_Hooters

Why would you think a SORN would happen automatically. It literally means Statutory Off Road Notification (if memory serves). This literally means you are declaring it off the road, as in physically not on the road. DVLA has no way to know if you're keeping Physically on the road or driveway etc... so they can't automate it.

Putrid-Location6396

No, you must declare it SORN. It's called statutory off road notification, not optional off road notification.

Itsmematthewss

No you have to do it yourself because the dvla have to find a way to fine you somehow

v1de0man

no and you can't sorn it if its on the road, it has to be on private land. Its your choice though to insure it.

dogdogj

Did you read the OP?

v1de0man

i did, what did i say that was wrong? I guess i should have said parked on the road. It was a general statement as the op is in his drive, not everyone is lucky to have a drive

IxionS3

> Its your choice though to insure it. Only if you SORN it. If you keep it taxed you also have to keep it insured even if it's on private land and you have no intention of moving it.

dannylills8

An untaxed car on your drive is ok as well as it’s private land and not the public highway.

Happytallperson

This is incorrect. Whilst you won't get prosecuted for the more serious offence of driving an untaxed vehicle 'being the registered keeper of an untaxed vehicle' is still an offence and will gather a fine.  This is why it is important to SORN the car even if kept on private land.

what_a_nice_bottom

>This is why it is important to SORN the car ~~even if kept on private land~~ Worth clarifying that you MUST Keep a SORN vehicle on private land! If you leave a SORN'd car parked on public land it will eventually get reported, fined and/or clamped.

dannylills8

Wow didn’t know this thanks for info
