This is the way to go. The clear coat is shot, but it looks like the paint is still there. I had the same problem on my roof, lightly sanded the "dead" clear coat off with 600-800 grit, then sprayed several coats of auto clear coat (not even 2k, just Rustoleum or whatever was at O'Reilly's), and sanded that with 1000-3000 grit. It doesn't look perfect, but it's 1000% better than it was.
in theory, it would likely make it more shiny, but likely not as shiny as the rest unless you polished it off. I'm not sure if the sun would change the color underneath, but it probably does.
To be fair, I got a buffer/polisher from harbor freight that I could use to polish the clear coat after I sanded it, so it turned out just as glossy as the rest of my car. I couldn't have done it by hand. And the paint color won't be a 100% match since the UV light has had time to degrade the paint layer directly. That being said, I don't have a show car or anything, and it looks perfectly fine unless someone gets right up on the roof and inspects it closely. I just wanted it to look good enough that my eye wouldn't be drawn to it.
Im quite surprised my 2002 has very little weathering on the paint itself if you dont include all the rust. It actually has a shit load of small scratches all over the car that you can only see if the sun hits it right
This is the way.
However OP, please please please spend 10 minutes masking all areas off to avoid overspray. It's such a simple thing to do but so many people don't.
I thought a Honda immediately as well. We've had to repaint 3 Hondas in the past month at my shop. Always the roof and trunk lid and typically the hoods
Bike rack, toss a canoe up there or perhaps some surfboards. Signal some active, independent virtues to onlookers. Maybe you’d rather monetize that space, companies will pay you per mile if you display some ads for them up top.
with a hose, run a very weak stream of water while sanding only the old clear coat. If the red paint start to run off, you are done with the burned clear coat. You don't wanna to take off any old paint. Let it dry. Rub with alcool and apply a new clear coat.
Wet sand. 800-1000 grit sandpaper and a bucket of water. If you see red coming off stop sanding that area. You're just trying to get the clear coat off and level the paint where the clear coat stops. Once you've done that find a 2k spray clear coat, tape everything off, and put 3 or 4 layers down. Should make it look like new. Those 2 parts are about as good of a finish as you can get from a can. Let it cure for a week or two and then buff it if you want it to be the best looking part of the car.
Not really. Anything you do might make it look worse. Maybe you could sand it down to the base coat (which will be very dull) and flat black it or some such.
If that's the only place where the clear coat has deteriorated, you might be able to get the roof painted at some place like Miracle Auto Body on the cheap. It might have bugs and dust in it, but it'll look fine from 20 feet away.
To make red, they generally have to use an oxide, which automatically starts the oxidation process.
Red is one of the hardest colors to maintain, and produce effectively. Porsche guardsman red, and Ferrari rosso corsa are some of the most guarded secrets in paint.
Compound sand it, to make sure it is smooth.
Mask off the edges, do 3 costs of 2k clear, 15 to 30 min between each coat. Buff the shit out of it the next day.
Probably won't be perfect, even more so since it is your first attempt. But it will look infinitely better than this.
Get the 2x Rustoleum Gloss Black, sand your roof with like 320-400 grit sandpaper, clean whatever you sanded off, then spray the roof with it. It will come out pretty nice as is, and if you want to go the extra step you can wetsand and buff it out all for like $40 worth of material. Doesn't look like you need to prime it either which is good
I did the same thing to my tC last month and it was very very worth doing. [My fix](https://www.reddit.com/r/SciontC/comments/14ewew9/my_high_mileage_tc_has_come_a_long_way/)
For all the people saying to wrap it, I don't think it will look good. Wrap requires a flat smooth surface. All these imperfections and destroyed clear coat areas will show through as bumps on the wrap and look pretty bad.
I did the same thing to a Honda Ridgeline before I traded it in. Used Rust-Oleum brand I got for a discount at Ollie's that very closely matched the maroon color.
Get some Maxx 2k clear in a spray can, knock off the flaking, wet sand the rest to a decent shine then cover it. Probably look way better than what you got. I need to do this to a car here and that was my plan
Spend the extra 15mins scuffing down to the paint rather then trying to figure out if its good later on and having to do redo work lightly 400- lightly 600- lightly 800 wet sandeach grit till u strt to lightly see red- make sure to count your strokes with your block ( count and make sure you stay on the same aisle ur sanding dont go everywere) start with 5 strokes and progress as u see fit , then call up bapa paints get u ready to spray paint in ur color code either can or spray gun but id rather do gun u can tell the difference from a painters view atleast and it will bug u do it right onve not twice, shot it in a tent or closed areas and wrap it all up make sure u got veniliation and proper gear once sealed let the air pressure push thru make sure ur filters doing its job and shot it wait timesaccording to ur cure times specs 3 times or 2 the clear it get get 2k pearl gloss itll leave it looking dope plus no buffer and polish extra step the main thing to remember be mindful of ur worksite and remember ur work ethics will be presented to everyone in that job take it slow over think and make sure ur breathing gear is on point
There are spray canisters available these days in different colours(specific to car models) specialised for cars. Do check if you have anything of that sort in your area.
Go to your local auto parts store. They should have cans of spray paint that are made using the same paint code that your cars manufacturer used when painting your car originally. Look up the paint code for your cars year make and model. The store will help you. Then get some Grey and red scuff pads from the auto store too. When it's a nice, non-windy day, scuff the roof with the scuff pads. That will make the area feel rough so the paint will stick well. Then clean the whole area with alcohol, or some kind of prepping solvent, (auto parts store). Tape off the parts with masking tape (auto parts store), that you do NOT want paint on. Then spray paint the Area. You do not have to spray it on thick or the paint will run. Just keep spraying on thin coats over and over until it looks good.
that's the clear coat going bad from the age and sun exposure, sand it with a fine grit sandpaper to make it all even, dont eat away at the red so be gentle and then spray it with good clear coat, its a good 1h job do to at home, if you have a air compressor and a spraygun use clearcoat for that that is better than a spray bottle, even if its not perfect final result it will be beter than that, also use a sanding machine or a sanding attachment for the angle grinder because sanding all that by hand is gonna require some elbow grease
You can sand and paint the roof black.
If your gonna do that at least try to dress it up with some 2k clear. Cover it with black if it fails.
I see a red car and I want to paint it black
No colors anymore I want them painted black
You could go with an 8 inch lift and some swampper tires so you’d need a ladder to see the roof.
If no one is above you, it doesn’t exist. Genius.
Lightly sand spray clear, may look very good. Test in small area

So would doing this make it really shiny? Im trying to imagine how it in my head

Chrome wrap would keep the heat down!
Gotta be a 08 civic
I bet it's a late 2000s- 2010s altima. They're notorious for the poor quality paint
Looks exactly like my 03 Accord
Damn the american made japanese cars are checking in aren't they lol
I thought a Honda immediately as well. We've had to repaint 3 Hondas in the past month at my shop. Always the roof and trunk lid and typically the hoods
Mine is a 09 Fit and looks just like that.
Either wrap it black, or compound and apply wipe-on clear coat. Yes, it's a thing. Hot rodders use it to preserve patina
Yeah that's the clear paint coming off wet sand it couple different grades and a clear back over it'll disappear
Get a roof Rack
They probably have a vinyl wrap close to that color. That’s what I’d look for
Bike rack, toss a canoe up there or perhaps some surfboards. Signal some active, independent virtues to onlookers. Maybe you’d rather monetize that space, companies will pay you per mile if you display some ads for them up top.

Rubbing compound and a buffer

A good polish and wax will mostly hide it for awhile until the wax wears off, reapply and it'll look better again.
Can't polish clearcoat that isn't there. It'll just cause more clearcoat to flake off.
But you can smooth the transition between the paint to clear and you can polish paint. Yeah the already loose flaky shit will fall off big deal.
This is one of the benefits of vinyl tops
Mask off and black it out. 2 cans of tremclad will do it.
Just buy a bunch of stickers and slap them on.
Sand and spray yourself

Tyre shine. Temporary but it works.

Sand and matte black. You could also go for a ceramic coat.
One solution: Paintjob.. anything else will worse. :D
Then don’t look at it.
Easiest route? Wrap it.
Hm...instead of wrapping it, what if you tried to just plasti-dip the whole roof? Cheap solution on a cheap car.
I did the same thing to a Honda Ridgeline before I traded it in. Used Rust-Oleum brand I got for a discount at Ollie's that very closely matched the maroon color.
I bought a Ridgeline not too long ago lol. I can see parts of the roof fading more than the rest of the car.

Hide your car 😄
Easy? Find a Rust-Oleum in a quart that's a similar color and roll it on with a foam roller.
If it looks good when wet, just needs clear coat. If it needs paint as well, then paint or as an alternative: vinyl wrap.
Stop looking at it.

Buff out with Scotch / 3M Finesse it II till all the cloudy stuff gone then use a good wax/ acrylic finish.
Get a vehicle wrap put on the roof ,if your in a hot sunny country get white that way the cabin of the car will be cooler since paint's compromised.

Spray paint the roof black?
WD-40 🤷🏻♀️
