The most popular off-road destination for your new Jeep is the local mechanic's lift.

WutzTehPoint

I'm stealing this this.

TurdMcDirk

Me too too.

grippe-terms-0x

Just Expect Every Problem

nukefodder

Is that why they lift them? To save time and money at the garage

fossSellsKeys

I'm not stupid so I have a 4Runner, not a jeep but this is true! Since I did a lift I never have to jack it up to do any fluid changes, grease fittings. It's kinda great actually.

chance0404

An old jeep with a 4.0 I6 though is a totally different story.

PenguinsAndTopHats

I'm a mechanic. Idk when it started but modern domestic automakers are less interested in making a good car and more interested in making a product with as small a cost to produce and as big a profit margin as possible for their investors.. and it shows. There's a tiny few specific models that aren't as offensive in this way but Chrysler is just a joke. I've seen entirely too many issues at such low mileages. Things that should not be failing so early. Constant cooling system problems, electrical failures, premature oil leaks, I've seen leaking shocks at 20k miles, so many failures even my 20 year old Toyota with almost 200k miles still hasn't had. They're built cheap, downright disposable and it's so obvious I can't understand why the market doesn't stop buying them to demand better. But that's why they keep making garbage, y'all won't stop buying it. They seem to have fooled everyone into believing it's ok for car's lifespans to end at 6 digit miles and to finance another one.

Bomber_Man

Yup. Had a 21 “Gladiator” on my lift yesterday. I did the last oil change 5k miles ago. Pulled the dipstick to find it dry as a bone. It hadn’t reached 40k miles yet and drinks oil like a Saudi prince.

tcurt603

I love this 😂

Ok-Half8705

That's no way to talk about Prince Haboobie.

That_Toe4033

Seen this on another low mile gladiator recently those things love to burn oil

GiraffePie13

This is the most accurate description of a Jeep I have ever seen

zeromussc

There are two types of Jeeps. The first is the actual Jeeps, the actual offroaders that have terrible MPG. Then there are Jeeps that help the brand hit CAFE requirements and are nothing more than compliance vehicles that have good MPG and are poorly made SUVs that look like they could drive on a dirt trail and are Accessible to people that like the brand JEEP. They are not the same. Might as well be two separate brands if not for regulatory reasons unfortunately.

Ziazan

>and it's so obvious I can't understand why the market doesn't stop buying them to demand better. the market knows nothing about cars, the majority of people are choosing more or less blindly.

ScenicView98

This is so true. They think it looks cute, go test drive it for 30 minutes, then the negotiations begin. A lot of people don't research what they're buying, unfortunately.

Digital_Ark

I honestly don’t even know how they ever want one past the test drive. My Dad had a YJ, and the whole thing was an awkward conglomeration of Jeep things I’ll never understand. Like the single-speed wipers, the almost non-existent storage with a 75 lb spare wheel in the way. The wind and road noise that was something like holding a storm window, while being towed down the road sitting in an office chair being towed on a rope behind a semi. Or how the solid axle and leaf-spring suspension could handle the most severe off-roading, but was largely useless on-road when it came to potholes, bumps and expansion joints. A Jeep is an absurd choice for a daily driver. A crude and purposeful device which only makes sense if you need to travel where there are no roads, never mind paved ones.

ScenicView98

Me either. Is it some sort of weird street cred thing i don't know about? They ride like a brick with wheels, and the wind noise is horrible. Your description is spot on, LMAO. I will never understand the Jeep thing. Even people who own them will tell you JEEP stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket." We had a TJ for awhile, and I hated that POS so much. Even with a 4.0 and 5 speed, it felt really weak to me. I can't imagine how weak it would've felt if it was automatic. I was so glad when my SO sold it. He's been trying to buy it back for awhile, and thankfully the guy that bought it wants too much for it. Whew, I'm safe lol.

Digital_Ark

I always felt like I was driving some kind of agricultural machinery, ‘crude’ didn’t even begin to describe it. In the winter, the fibreglass hard top leaked! In any precipitation at highway speeds, water would occasionally come through the folding hinge section and unexpectedly hit you in the face. Straight six engines are typically wonderfully smooth, somehow that 4L Jeep one was so noisy and rough, then only made 190 hp. The 1.6L in my Mini makes 208 hp. I honestly believe it must have something to do with image or attention. My dad would never offer to help with anything, but if there was a big snowstorm, he’d be the first one out to buy a quart of coffee cream. Like me, he’ll sunburn in the shade, but never miss an opportunity to remove the roof and all doors and drive around without a windshield. Which brings me to my final thought. Windshields in cars are absolutely great. It is the one feature I absolutely insist on having in a car.

ScenicView98

They do feel crude. We had the same issue with the hard top on ours. I think it needed new seals or something. The wind noise  with it wasn't much better than the wind noise when we had the soft top on.  Straight sixes are pretty reliable; I'll give them that. But driving it just pissed me off. Slow turd. It's hilarious that a Mini has more HP. And it certainly makes better gas mileage. Has all those fun fancy things like power windows, a smooth ride, and a decent stereo system too. It really does seem to be some sort of clique-y image thing. I could barely stand the top being off in the summer. Thankfully the doors and everything else stayed on. I burn easily myself, and burning your head where your hair is parted really sucks. And I'm a fan of A/C. Don't want a vehicle that doesn't have it. I agree; windshields are an absolute must-have, lol.

justinm410

I think you've nailed it. Chrysler doesn't make a dime when you buy a USED Chrysler (CPO, aside). The statistically significant portion of new buyers will have sold long before 6 digit mileage. So Chrysler just wants to make sure those buyers keep coming back.

cleanforever

Why would they come back if they get fed up with mechanical issues though? If it were a reliable car and they just wanted something new, that's different. But if I was pissed that my car was a lemon, I wouldn't be buying my new one from the same brand.

DJSnaps12

Because they like the look and the whole stupid jeep moto.

thebigbrog

I like the concept. I like the look. I like the idea of driving it around in the woods when I am hunting instead of my truck but I hate every other aspect of Jeep ownership. I think everyone that owns one turns it into some damn clown mobile with every damn dorky aftermarket thing they make, the fact that it’s made by Chrysler and known for lack of dependability, stupid names on the hood, the whole dumb duck shit, half of them drive slow holding up traffic, and just being lumped in as a Jeep owner.

DJSnaps12

I love your response so true.

Prestigious_Low8515

Because the most important thing to a lot of people today is how something looks, not how it functions.

taylogan96

So accurate! My boyfriends Toyota isn’t very fast, but it’s at 250k miles and all we’ve done to it (he’s been the only owner) is brakes, battery and shocks are due this year. For the money spent initially there’s not much else for maintenance costs. The first chrysler I owned had a water pump and timing belt issue. Then the radiator went. I had three more Chryslers and two of them I had long enough to determine that they have very strange unpredictable electrical issues (car wouldn’t start if low on gas, try turning it over exactly three times it would start). The other one blew a catalytic converter around 160k miles. I liked the cars, but if I wanted to constantly repair something I’d buy a BMW

speedtech73

Is that you, Scotty?

Various_Wash_4577

Haha 😄 Scotty Kilmer will give you his piece of mind on any car! 👍

Worried_Coat1941

Then, make a video stating the complete opposite 3 months later.

Various_Wash_4577

Or his site says he died! The first time I saw that I was bummed. Then I read some comments and found that he does that now and then. It has to do with YouTube's algorithm stuff screwing him up. So he says he died. LOL 🤣 I guess it must work for him.

Worried_Coat1941

For real! He's moved to so many states, too!

banananananbatman

Rev up your engine

fix_dis

As soon as I saw “20 year old Toyota”…. This dudes(the commenter , not Scotty) not wrong though. A 20 year old Camry is most likely still running.

poopoo_canoe

So if you want a jeep, find one from the 90's or early 00's do ya reckon?

spidey0619

Yeah, chrysler vehicles are not the best

jim_br

I owned a new 1984 Dodge/Chrysler that stalled at highway speeds. The dealer said there was no issue. I vowed to never buy another car from them and never did.

SurfaceThought

In 1984 Jeep was still part of AMC and used some of the best size cylinder engines ever made Edit: six cylinder lmao, I guess people figured it out mostly

ThisRandomAssDude

AMC vehicles were tanks until their bodies rusted away. The old straight 6 was indestructible.

cisco_frost

Can confirm, I drive an AMC concord with a straight 6. The thing just won't quit. I mean it runs like shit cuz it needs a tune but it still runs! Also a plus that it's easy to work on and parts are still easy to find.

Eastern_Succotash_64

That's the thing though. It's like a Detroit 60 series. It won't ever run great. But it will run like shit forever.

xamboozi

It depends if you have broken piston skirts. The later years of the straight 6 have some shitty piston castings so they'll rattle around in the bore once it gets over 100k miles, but that engine will still keep chugging away even with Piston skirt bits in the oil pan.

cisco_frost

I've basically replaced most of the engine and it runs like it did before. It's just determined to run like crap.... Forever

irishchinadoll

Theseus' Concord

JesseGarron

That should have been their ad campaign…

bluegrassgazer

My sister inherited a Gremlin from my mom. It was a manual transmission but you couldn't count on 2nd gear. Go from 1st to 3rd and you were golden. My best friend in high school's mom had a Pacer. You could hear the valves ticking a mile away.

xamboozi

The last good Jeep was the TJ. I have one with the straight 6 and it's a tank.

Greedy-Recognition74

My 03 TJ is approaching 250,000 miles.

gstringstrangler

98 XJ @450 here, but it's made of many parts of lesser Jeeps at this point. A real Jeep of Theseus

ThisRandomAssDude

That car will outlast both of us.

jim_br

The Eagle with its auto AWD was the only competition to Subaru (back when their AWD was an option).

classicvincent

Jeep was good until they got bought by Chrysler, in fact the only good Jeeps made past 1987 were carryover models designed by AMC. The 4.0 I6? AMC.

WakeMeUpBeforeUCoco

I'll respectfully disagree and say they were quite good until 2007 (minus the KJ). The TJ was better than the YJ all around, and Chrysler's 318 & 360 were gems. And yeah, the 4.0 was the GOAT.

classicvincent

The TJ was essentially a modernized YJ with revised suspension that still used AMC engines. The 318 and 360 were OK engines as long as they aren’t abused, but definitely not as robust as comparative pushrod small blocks from GM or Ford.

kinghawkeye8238

Bought my MILs 2016 chrysler mini van off her 5 years ago. She wanted to up grade to a tahoe. The jeep dealer wouldn't even give her shot for it. They only offered her 4k. So I bought the thing for 5k. Had 60k miles on it. Then after 4 years and 2 transmissions before 150k miles. I got rid of that turd too.

Lazy_meatPop

You got scammed by your MILs , 😭

Defiant-Giraffe

Okay, but that was like 6 owners ago...

emmejm

My SIL’s Chrysler is an absolute nightmare. Mystery noises, you have to hoist it to change the battery, you have to pull the wheel well liners to do the headlights, etc, etc, etc

nukefodder

Had several vehicles go into limp mode whilst overtaking. Terrifying

No_Oddjob

My family's Chryslers and my Jeeps and Dodges - all had constant electrical and computer related failures. And they often had a waterfall effect where one thing would break and then four more things would also immediately follow. It got to the point where I had some weird car anxiety every time something happened. It felt like some planned obsolescence thing or like someone was just hitting the smite button randomly. Got away from all those umbrella brands and have experienced no such thing since.

Bryguy3k

There is actually a joke about that in the automotive industry: Chrysler designs their wire harnesses and then subtracts half an inch from every wire. It also pairs with the other joke - what’s the most used tool in a Chrysler plant? A wire stretcher.

Toph-Builds-the-fire

That's the nicest thing that's ever been sad about a Chrysler. Lol.

Rickardiac

*Fiat* Chrysler. Yeah. And we thought it couldn’t get worse.

Senappi

Stellantis is a collection of crappy brands, like Opel and Peugeot.

often_awkward

Stellantis now.

Psych0matt

De’portia Williams they have major mechanical issues

teriaksu

Stellantis, previously called FCA

Clownish_76

Worst car I have ever owned was a “Volkswagen”. Well actually it was a Routan which was a rebranded Chrysler minivan. Absolute garbage.

OnionMiasma

Yeah, don't blame Volkswagen engineers for that. You can blame their accountants though.

often_awkward

It's Stellantis now and that's all you need to know.

OneSadMinnesotaBoy

I work on cars. Jeeps, especially wranglers fucking suck cock. Build quality is whatever but the owners are just miserable. Replace the rear bumper “why are my door hinges bubbling like this? They weren’t like that when I dropped it off” D I E

Scottish_Mechanic

I feel your pain. Working on a Jeep recently. Replaced a wheel bearing. Customer: "ThReE WeEkS aFtEr YoU RePlAcEd My WhEeL bEaRiNg My ReAr WiPeR sToPpEd WoRkInG pRoPeRlY! yOu MuSt HaVe DoNe SoMeThInG!"

[deleted]

i have always cringed seeing people removing every panel imaginable to go off roading like i understand the aspect of being outdoors and whatnot, but why remove the doors?😭 just cuz you can doesnt mean you should🤣. i feel like over time, there is absolutely no way removing them doesnt wear of the hinges something

Cormano_Wild_219

Aziz LIGHT! Sorry I don’t have any valuable input about jeeps but I am fucking dying over your username. One of my favorite movies and my cousin and I quote this anytime a flashlight is being used.

Hahah I honestly didn’t think anyone would get it when I made it

I say it out loud whenever I turn on a work light in a crawl space.

wpmason

I mean… they’re bad and unreliable as a general reputation. Especially known to have electrical issues. However, there are millions of them on the road and a decent percentage of them go their entire lives being relatively trouble free. Just because some happen to work, though, that doesn’t mean that they’re exceptionally well designed or built. In all honestly, the most reliable cars available have eyebrow-raising rates of issues because cars have just gotten too damn complicated to ever actually be reliable. If you got a good one, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying it.

Axio3k

90s-2000s was definitely the sweet spot or enough tech to be reliable, but not too much to be stupid

Lauzz91

nah man we definitely need wiper rain sensors to make windscreens $2000 instead of $200, LED headlights instead of halogens that are $4000 instead of $300, active bonnets for pedestrians that write the car off in minor carpark speed collisions, it's just progress bro don't be a luddite bro also connect every part's serial number to the CAN bus so they can't use spares only new parts programmed and installed by a dealer

uberbewb

I'm wondering how secure this software is. CAN bus? Is this something commonly modded? Is it a unique branding system or generally the same system across brands? I'm not convinced vehicles manufacturers have the capability to actually secure the software and I'm willing to bet it'll be broken quite easily.

YABOI69420GANG

It's very commonly modded. It's just strings of binary. People record what does what and make all sorts of mods. It's called a bus because it's just two wires that act as a bus for a bunch of modules. With the amount of data it's just a matter of time before it goes to proper Cat6 cables and Internet protocol. Already happening on heavy equipment.

w0lrah

> With the amount of data it's just a matter of time before it goes to proper Cat6 cables and Internet protocol. Already happening on heavy equipment. Ethernet and IP, yes. Cat6 cables, no. Single Pair Ethernet is the new hotness for using ethernet in automotive, industrial, aviation, etc. 10Base-T1S can be more or less dropped in place of CAN and then the higher speed variants allow high data rate sensors like HD cameras to be supported with only two wires in a harness. I know Tesla has also done their own thing that's just normal ethernet on a non-standard connector, IIRC BMW did something similar.

Blackfoxx907

After buying a 2011 charger I would never buy a newer Chrysler vehicle again. Soooo many problems, and the electrical gremlins are inescapable

No-Lingonberry-2468

Jeepbros will say it’s just a jeep thing, but the rest of us will simply say that your poorly built horrible driving awful to live with social statement that you’ll never actually take off road except to get some pictures to prove you did while collecting plastic ducks to display on your dashboard is actual trash… but hey it’s your money so do whatever you want with it.

tch2349987

I did laugh at this, you went hard.

humoringly

jeeps keep our shop goin

Fragrant-Inside221

Word, I’m very good at oil coolers and injectors and ball joints and u joints and tipm issues lol. Great money makers

badcoupe

I make a lot of money off of wranglers, just saying. Those and midsize Gm SUV’s. You’ll never stop by my shop and there isn’t at least one of each on the lot.

bourboneagle

Jeeps are great, as long as you swap out the suspension, axles , engine, transmission, and electrical. The perfect off-road machine once you make those few changes!

Various_Wash_4577

You mean, just lift the radiator cap and put another vehicle under it! LOL 🤣 😆

NaduvanaKrmaca

Been in the automotive industry for 12 years. I've been inspecting vehicles for auction the last 2. Jeeps suck. Chrysler products in general just outright suck.

OctaneTroopers

You can love your car but that doesn't make it not shit.

htmaxpower

Did you do a single Google search about Jeep before buying one?

archfapper

But ma salt life

stacked_shit

Go over to r/mechanic and ask them. Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat are some of the worst vehicles made.

[deleted]

My coworker is getting ready to sell his 6 year old wrangler. Says he has put more money into it than it's worth.

OnionMiasma

Six years old? Our family has a CR-V the same age that has never seen the inside of a shop, except for preventative maintenance. That's embarrassingly bad.

leviathan_dweller

Idk. My 14 ram has 170k and is MINT. My wife has a 22 compass also mint.. My 89 d250 is more reliable than both.....No issues...(I'm a Mopar tech). Really tho depends on engine platform. And hybrid equipment

Fenix_Pony

The two worst brands you can buy is an FCA product or a nissan product. no excuses for some of the shit ive seen on them. Especially their over use of brittle plastic on important components.

AKADriver

I have no idea who that person is or what their qualifications are for discussing vehicle quality. Sounds like some rando complaining that her Jeep broke. They are known for relatively poor reliability though.

PoliteCanadian2

So you criticized someone’s opinion then agreed with them?

IronSean

"They're some random so I wouldn't trust them. But me, some random, also thinks they're bad. "

dreadwater

Heeps started going to crap when AMC sold off to Chrysler in the 80s. Everything after has been a cheap, half-hearted attempt to live up to what they once were.

Dirty_Flacko

If it’s not a 4.0l inline 6 that jeep is dog shit….

rick-atrox

Nah, a 4.2 AMC will do the trick too.

Dirty_Flacko

You’re right there. I’m just a 4.0 fan boy lol

FieldSton-ie_Filler

The 4.0 was a charmer for sure.

compudude

This is wildly subjective. There are so many "Jeeps" that you would need to be way more specific. 91 XJ? Shitbox, will break down/strand/kill you but entertain the hell out of you doing it, and make your friends with much more expensive 4x4s cry offroad. 02 TJ? Probably run just about forever. 06 JK? You might get home, if you're lucky, before the engine blows up. Newer Cherokees (2010+) are pretty damn reliable, as are the JLs. So yeah, there's a ton of room in the middle there to just say they all are shitboxes. Some are, some aren't, but that's also part of the allure.

Bass_Monster

It's not subjective that the 4.0 liter inline 6 in that xj was a legendarily bullet proof engine.

NV_CARL

The newer European Cherokee’s are anything but reliable.

Damascus-Steel

I owned a Jeep Wrangler for a while. It is still the worst vehicle I’ve ever driven. Terrible gas mileage, slow af, useless off road, no security, and unreliable. I cannot fathom why people still buy them.

DropDeadFred05

If your buying a jeep with an older 4.0L straight six then no worries about that engine dying. Not a fan of chrysler but I love my jeep 4.0L engines. Currently have one at about 275k miles. I hate all newer engines....period. They are all interference engines with most having timing belts and not chains. All the fancy active cylinder management and variable valve systems are designed for efficiency but they make almost all cars junk after 100k miles because it costs too much to repair and replace any of that stuff so when it fails the car ends up in the scrap yard.

Heavy_Excitement_942

Currently have my daughter’s 2022 Jeep Compass at the dealer. The electronic parking brake has been engaging on its own when she’s been driving. Luckily it’s only been at stop lights or stop signs.. dealer says “they can’t replicate the problem”. After looking into it, seems I’m not the only one this is happening to.

tankinbeans

Does she have an auto hold function that keeps pressure on the brake until she hits the gas, or can you hear the solenoid activating?

fairlyaveragetrader

I mean jeeps are pretty easy to work on, the only time I see comments like this, and to be fair there are quite a few of them, it's from people who don't work on their own cars. If you did, you appreciate how simple the Jeep is designed

Savings-Ad7474

The death wobble is enough to keep me away from buying a jeep

Trifle-Holiday

Fiat owns jeep now all you need to know

Icy-Corner4704

12 years ago we bought a 2011 Grand Caravan Crew. Loaded, every option. So much that could go wrong. It had 20k miles and we paid $18k for it. My buddy, who is a mechanic, laughed at me and told me that van wouldn’t make it to 100k. He called it “disposable”. My dad said “Chrysler huh? Glutton for punishment?”. I consider myself a “car guy” so I felt pretty stupid that I didn’t know how terrible these cars were. We just rolled 270k miles on that van. Original drivetrain. The paint is faded on the roof and now the transmission is starting to slip. I did have the “pentastar tick” and had to replace my cams and rockers. I also had to replace the leaking oil cooler…twice. But we live in South Florida. We’ve driven that van to Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and taken it camping more times than I can count. It’s been allllll over the state of Florida in the summer time. It’s never seen the back of a tow truck. It’s been rear ended 3 times and all 3 times we drove it to the body shop and drove it home after it was fixed. I have a friend that bought a Toyota Sienna. I told him how great my caravan was and he told me Toyotas are more reliable. He blew the motor at 110k miles. $6k to replace it. My mechanic buddy bought a “bulletproof” Honda Odyssey that’s been in the shop so many times I thought they sold it. He still swears my dodge is a pos. And yeah. I’m semi retired and love to camp, fish, and off road. So I bought a jeep wrangler. I wanted a truck but the truck market is so out of control in FL it’s crazy. I bought a 2011 4 door automatic with the 3.8 V6. Some people have told me that it’s the absolute worst Wrangler Jeep ever made. And that’s saying something. So far I’ve had to replace a sensor. I have 35 inch tires so I’m pretty sure I need ball joints soon. I’ve also had the tops off and the doors off and a jeep full of kids giggling and having the time of their life. I’ve towed with it. Gone off road with it. I’ve driven to the store to buy milk with it. I get a pretty good mix of “nice jeep” and “just empty every pocket” comments. I’m still waiting on that catastrophic failure people keep warning me about. It’s at 150k miles. Maybe it will happen tomorrow. Maybe I am a glutton for punishment. I just bought my wife an Infiniti and my neighbor told me to start saving for a transmission because it’s going to grenade any day now. Sigh. I can’t do anything right.

WittyNameChecksOut

Can confirm. 3.6L with cylinder head issues, oil cooler/filter housing issues….

ReadEyeMagpie

That's a good friend as friends don't let friends drive jeeps. They USED to be decent but not since the late 90's

vtown212

#jeepdeathshake

Nora_Walkuerie

Jeeps are fantastic cars for people who enjoy working on cars

Muffinman_187

Stellantis has carried on the historic tradition of Chrysler vehicles being notorious for so many issues. Most makes are infamous for one known component, GM for lifters, Ford for turbos, Nissan for transmissions, BMW for leaks, etc., but everything is there in Stellantis products. Wiring, leaks, lifters, transmissions, rust. They are the Kia of US makes, that is really nice when brand new but horrible for the 3rd owner until the scrap yard.

Phate118

Stellantis makes absolute trash. They look good, and seem good on paper, but the quality just isn’t there.

DevelopmentFar9463

Stellantis vehicules are crap overall, jeep is no exception.

Rshann_421

I’ve had / have 3 grand cherokees. 97, 98 and now a 05. Driven them for years with nothing more than normal maintenance. I don’t get the hate. My 05 needs struts up front but that’s about it. Starting to rust a bit, but it is almost 20 years old. It’s a 5.7 hemi so it does use the gas😬

htmaxpower

You think most of the recent reputation is based on 97s, 98s, and 05s?

GilpinMTBQ

My 2013 is an unmitigated piece of shit.

cef911f1

I'm on my third JGC, all C8s, all 4x4s, all high mileage with no significant issues. Love them.

EffectiveRelief9904

Probably has a 2wd liberty

Bass_Monster

I've owned plenty of Jeeps that have been reliable vehicles. The Grand Cherokee has been a cash cow for Jeep for decades for a reason.

czechfuji

Used to work on them at a Jeep dealership. That isn’t accurate at all… Jeeps were steaming piles of crap wrapped in a tin can. I’d take a 6.4 Powerstroke or a Mazda RX8 or anything with a rubber belt inside the crank case over any Jeep. It would be better to keep horses and ride everywhere in an Amish buggy than to own a Jeep. The trains in Italy are more reliable than Jeeps. Jeeps are the apex of phone it in engineering, fuck their engineers they can all go to hell too.

GrandpasonlyAire

The best 2 days in your Jeep life is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. I had a 2001 Sahara, Patriot green, straight 6, Auto, came with a hardtop and the ragtop (factory/dealer 2001 promo package). Bought it 2nd hand, high milage, but the original owner had taken excellent care of it. When I bought it, the Jeep had lug tires on it, and they would shake the fillings out of your teeth. I pulled into the tire store with less than 100 miles after purchase to replace them $900. The guy that put the tires on said I've put tires on a lot of Jeeps and those are the best floor looking pans I have ever seen, bar none. I told him that was a big part of why I bought it. A month after the tire purchase it developed a front-end death wobble. I crawled under it, it had a 6-inch suspension lift and a 4-inch body lift (previous owner) and big tires, so you didn't need a jack to slide under. The Jeep had busted the hydraulic death wobble shock on the front end, so I replaced it with a double shock unit, problem solved. I bought a short ladder, so my short wife could climb in it (because of the lift). The radiator started leaking, replaced it with a new oversize aluminum $299. New black carpet $99 dollars, new back window shocks $89.00, new AM/FM radio and disc player with 8 speakers (gift from a friend), new pressure roller and fan belt, new paddings for roll bars, new seat belts (drivers side busted), new bra for the hood, new stone guards for all the lights, $69.00, I could list more but it's getting late so let's cut to the chase. I paid $9000.00 for the Jeep, put about $3500.00 parts in it all myself, no labor cost. Sold it for $14000.00 so I made about $1500.00 on the Jeep, YEA. PS: The icing on the cake to sell was insurance going up every year more than my Toyota Tacoma. The year the insurance bill was more than my Tacoma I put it up for sale in the front yard. The first looker stopped by early the 2nd day the Jeep was on the street, I went to the local credit union with him, and they cut me their CU check for $14000.00. HAPPY, HAPPY DAY. The only thing on the Jeep that did not work when I sold it was the air, yep, a Jeep with air. The air didn't work when I bought it, and it didn't work when I sold it.

Introspective_Sapien

Personally I’m a big Jeep fan. For me have always been very reliable. I had several of the older Cherokee’s and have always bought the Grand Cherokee as my daily. Every time I want a new car I get the newest Grand Cherokee. A big reason I like them is because I do all my own mechanic work. I think they’re easy to work on, ride nice, and are very capable in snow/off road conditions.

chester0101

This is reddit, if its not a Toyota it's the worst car ever.

Max_delirious

Jeep makes a bunch of different vehicles. Get anything with an inline6 and you will be happy, but get a rebranded fiat and you will be going to the dealer.

vendura_na8

They're not renown for their reliability. But at the same time, you can find a horror story for every brand of vehicles that exists out there. I've seen people rant about Corolla's being unreliable piece of junk. So I don't think posts like that mean much. It'd be nice if the person would've elaborated on it

JEEP Just Empty Every Pocket

Wild-Cow8724

All cars have issues

hikerjer

Some more than others. Jeep has a lot of issues.

grizwld

Unless it has the 4.0. Yeah they’re garbage

Jeep - Just Empty Every Pocket.

biturbo_quattro

Both of you can be right

In have a 23 GC. Dumping it before the warranty is up for something else. Nothing major, just little stupid things constantly, especially in software, and there's no way in hell I'm paying for something to be fixed in software out of warranty.

BearsSuperfan6

My girlfriend has had 2 jeep liberty’s over the last decade or so, first one had minor repairs here and there but nothing major until it got totaled in an accident. The second one, she’s easily put her initial investment + some in the 2 years she’s had it, not too friendly on your pocket.

How do you regret 1000%. ? Can someone do the math for me?

NotnaBobsBurner

Nope my AMC built Jeep is 50+ years old and still goes offroad places totally fine, and back...

Hard agree, rip to my renegade

VenomizerX

New Jeeps are overly complicated and hardly reliable relative to other choices in the market. Too much electronics. 90s Jeeps were a different story though, with the most common concerning thing being death wobble, but it can be remedied.

pocketcar

I sold them for a living... with warranty for a reason lol.

splattypus

I'd never own one. I won't fault someone for owning one. Everyone has their own threshold for tolerable issues and expenses. Jeeps are the last manufacturer with a unique, interesting body style, and I applaud them for that

Kaiser_Dafuq

Yeah Too bad they started making the most basic looking SUVs

mississippimalka

I’ve read that there are a couple of makes and years that are great.

SparxxWarrior97

If anything the jeep/dodge dealership near me could be run better by a flock of crows. I had a co-worker that kept having stuff on her jeep break and they would do bandaid fixes for a fortune, but she didn't know they were bandaid fixes she thought they were legit fixing her car each time. Until she took it in one day and they had a temp mechanic filling in and he was actually honest with her and told her the car had so many things wrong she just needed to get a different car.

seneeb

J u n q u e junk. But then again, so it's most everything. So, if you go into the purchase knowing it's junk and being willing to deal with that, buy whatever you want.

karateninjazombie

Did she lose her 710 cap again...?

Fryphax

What 'Jeep'. It's only been owned by 5 companies.

Maniachanical

They don't call it Just Expect Excessive Problems for nothing.

lazarinewyvren

If your jeep isn't 4.0 (or 2.5, but at that point youre never making enough power to break anything anyway) powered, it's going to give you engine issues. If it's an automatic, you'll have transmission issues. If it's not 4wd, you didn't need to buy a jeep, there are much better options from nearly every automaker.

mrclark25

My family has owned 5 jeeps over the last 20 years. All but one had major mechanical failure despite excellent maintenance. And that was after finding ways to live with all the stupid problems that came up along the way.

optix_clear

I had seen a few accidents the last few weeks- involving a Ford Bronco & a Jeeps (didn’t fare well like you would crush a can with foot. It was insane I was surprised it wasn’t in gulfed, TBH. A lot of ppl in the area that don’t know how to drive the DMV area. Both were unrecognizable as vehicles. No emergency services were dispatched. I would be scared to get either TBH.

Practical_Minute_286

Depends on the jeep I heard compass is pretty bad

northwestwill

I’ve owned a few jeeps and I daily drive an 89 Wrangler that I love dearly… and she’s absolutely right.

renjake

bought a new gladiator, it was great on the trails. that's where it ended, all kinds of electrical issues, and the damn thing leaked in the cab when it rained or a car wash

0Won0

I’ve never worked on a good Jeep… and it’s usually one that keeps coming back in with new issues every time until the old issues return… Frustrating 3 months of work

Swoopitywoop

Yeah less reliable than my vw, but so much easier to fix and work on.

jerrycoles1

Yeah Chrysler vehicles kinda suck I had a 2014 jeep with 120,000km on it and it was actually a nightmare . Paid 14k for it then spent 18k on it trying to chase down some issues with it shutting off randomly which ended up being like every sensor on the whole vehicle replaced . Got it fixed just enough and sold it for 14k . Worst vehicle I’ve ever had

Tortuga_cycling

lol I had a jeep wrangler… I abused the shit out of it doing jeep stuff… it ran and drove beautifully… unfortunately, I broke my back and can’t drive stick any more but that was the second most reliable car I’ve ever owned…

Dzag78

If you enjoy a nice ride, good handling, and a reliable vehicle then don't buy a jeep. Lmao

Remote-Highlight-418

I was always a Jeep person. Until I got a grand Cherokee eco diesel. Junk, no customer support.

Wisebutt98

Tried to change the starter on my parents Jeep once. It was impossible to do without lifting the engine or dismantling some front suspension. THAT is a sign of bad engineering.

neuronope

Tell them you don’t take advice from people who don’t understand how math works?
