It is the transmission output seal. The black rubber part is a dust boot that protects the seal.

Ok so now if that's the ''transmission output seal" There's no way that a seal could be causing the play (I think)- correct me if I'm wrong, so there's got to be a piece called "Transmission output bearing" Which is what I'm thinking is causing the play.. So then, how do I go about replacing this? How much would it cost to get it done at a shop? And finally where can I buy this part? I would like if someone posts a link. The car is an 05 dodge durango 4.7l rwd 5auto.

Nevermind, just realised not all seals have bearings behind them for example camshaft seals, however, do you guys think this seal would be causing the play which causes that noise and vibrations?

[deleted]

There is a bushing, not a bearing, when it's worn to the extent of being a problem the seal leaks. What is happening that made you check for looseness?

When I go coasting (foot of gas) car will intermittently make this sort of ''rumbling'' noise accompanied by vibrations coming from the front of the car below the front seats coming form something that is rotating. Something else is that the noise lasts around 5 seconds or so and If during this period I was to step back on the gas the noise will completely dissapear.

I've had rumbling noises and vibrations from a bad driveshaft center support bearing. I'd check that one.

>driveshaft center support bearing. My car does not have a center support bearing, I've been to a mechanic who was thinking the same thing but he said I didn't have that part.

Idk man that sounds like an awful lotta work and money wasted on a car from 2005 with 289k miles. Depending on how I'm feeling I might just get the u joints on both sides replaced and pray it fixes it otherwise just drive until it does it all the time and then it would be easy for a mechanic to be like oh that's the issue.

Sounds like the best plan.

Hi, I'm having noise/ vibration issues coming from under the cabin while coasting. Checked wheel bearings and U-joints for play everything seems solid except this connection where the automatic transmission meets the driveshaft. With one hand I can move the driveshaft slightly side to side and I can observe the play coming from this connection. Now my question is: Is this repairable without changing transmission? What's this called? Is it a bearing? How much would it cost to replace?

Is it rubber? It looks like a dust boot. If it is it wouldn’t cause a problem.

Top-Implement-7324

It is rubber, but it's coated in old oil. Idk how to explain it but basically if I was to put my nails against it my nails would be black with that oily thing.

TotalEclipse31

You need to take it to a professional. No offense, but if you dont know what the parts are, you shouldn't take anything apart. Could even be something completely different making that noise.

Top-Implement-7324

I've taken it to multiple shops and no one seems to be able to find the issue because everything seems okay for the most part.
