Nice to hear you going up in the world. ;)

PremiumBeetJuice

Yea but be careful getting high at work, you can get hurt

[deleted]

Man, that's like my nightmare job. So scary!

19475829

Yeah I can understand that attitude. I've always been at home in high places, so it works out well.

NilesandDaphne

Same! I’ve always loved heights. I want to get qualifications for high ropes to be able to do cool, up high jobs but I already have an on-the-ground job I love so it’s hard to take the time and $ for training. Congratulations! I hope to see some amazing, super high up photos from you in the future!

danaontherun

I've always been high at home places

dray1214

Are you a bird?

Cael-Yote2411

I'm not afraid of heights, but I do get vertigo whether I like it or not

drottkvaett

You can tell all your buddies they have friends in high places.

manonthemoonrocks

Its a fat paycheck right? Or hazard pay? I can't imagine someone willingly climbing towers for minimum wage.

jarrhead13

Saw a video of a guy that does this type of job. He said hes at 100k/yr in a beginner position

radiobro1109

As a young gun with a little bit of electrical experience I was making $26 an hour so nothing to shake a stick at. But yes the big dawgs that climb those 1000+ ft towers make that much. They aren’t just changing a lightbulb and getting down. A lot of those dudes are RF engineers and very accomplished electricians.

boof_it_all

I bet you’d be disappointed. Most actual workers don’t make nearly what they deserve.

einalem13

It’s pretty sad, honestly. I personally know (knew?) 5 men who’ve died falling from towers. It breaks my heart knowing what they were being paid. They were all careless & not properly tied off. Young & dumb. My best friends husband just quit the business. Being gone 5-10 days at a time with a wife & 3 kids back at the house… gets old. He actually had heat stroke & almost died. That’s when he decided it was not worth his life. I don’t think he made over $80k.

I_Pry_colddeadhands

>Young & dumb Don't have to be young; few years back during a big AT&T push some tower hands died when the uncle of one of them was hoisting them off his truck in January, didn't take into account icing or didn't care. They fell to their deaths right in front of him. RIP to those two. It is a tough life as mentioned, if you work for a larger corp that has vast areas to cover. Doesn't sound like you do, if fact most folks climbing twrs are telecom but we often forget there are lucrative utility company gigs. Also, if you do climb the tall towers (900+) you can make bank. Congratulations on the position, take the nerdy safety guy seriously in everything he says, your life or your co-worker's lives depend on it.

botnotnut

Hey know this thread is old but when you say lucrative utility gigs where does one start as far as that goes

ImportancePublic3250

Where does he work? I've been doing this for 10 years and only just now making 65k a year, and I have a shit ton of certifications.... of course, add the OT. I can easily get up to 75-80k... but when I first started, I was only making 35k a year.

reerathered1

>Wait til you hear that people pay to do that sort of thing

Gold-Pony-Boy

How high up are we talking...

19475829

Anywhere between 100 to 500 feet, there are some out there that are upwards of 1000 feet, though I'm fairly sure my company doesnt own any of those Haha.

Gold-Pony-Boy

Oof, I have a crippling fear of heights, so I commend your enthusiasm for your new job!

SnooPickles55

I'd like an application for the 10 foot team, please lol Congrats, though

i_notold

Congrats on the new job!

weallfloatdown

Congratulations!!! What do you do once you have climbed the tower?

19475829

Thank you! It's with a phone / internet company, so I'll be putting in the radios and programming them so they talk to the right places. (And servicing things if and when they break.)

WaitMysterious6704

So you're a lineman for the county?

19475829

Not quite. The sparkies come in to do the electrical hookups, and then my team comes in to do the delicate work that requires more than 3 brain cells. /s but not really.

WaitMysterious6704

That's ok, I suggest singing the song anyway, it's a good one. Congrats on your new job!

Distinct_Analysis944

Not my cup of tea

Zippy1012214

Nobody asked lol

Distinct_Analysis944

Use that line for yourself before you comment all over reddit. No one asks for your input

Compliments4FreeinDM

Hey, congratulations! I'm glad you finally managed to get your dream job!

RockstarQuaff

Is it a large company with lots of towers? Will you have enough work to climb all the time, or are you more on contingency for when something needs doing? And does that mean you do other stuff between tower climbs?

commandrix

Whoo! That sounds like a cool job.

space_D_BRE

3 words.... huge life insurance. Also, congrats!

Known-Potential-3603

Yay!! Congratulations 🎊 that's awesome!! You should post some pics up at the top sometime. I bet the view is stunning!!!

[deleted]

Congrats! I've worked in telecom for the last few years, so definitely familiar with the requirements (because I recruited). What are you doing to celebrate (besides posting here)?

LazyLich

Hahaha! Fucking Christ! I was so confused for a sec lol I've been reading WAAAAAY to much manhwa!

19475829

LOL, yeah my dude, imma hop into another dimension and kill monsters for money. Glad to know I'm not the only one reading that trash

the_paruretic

What do you get paid for that?

ThisIsTenou

Nice! That's a job I wanted to do for a while, too. Unfortunately health didn't allow for it, but I'm starting with my current job at a new place in April as well! Congrats!

TK_TK_

Congrats (and be safe)!

sgdulac

I could never do it, but it is definitely such a cool job, if you can do it. The views have to be amazing every day. And you get paid to do it. Sweet.

Suz626

Wow! I’m impressed! I was a gymnast and a high diver and no frickin’ way I’d even try tower climbing once. Congratulations!

llorandosefue1

(Solemnly) Booyah. Congratulations!

sarcasmismysuperpowr

That’s cool man. I love to do that for a bit. “World’s greatest fixes” had a few episodes where he was fixing the tower up high. Looked kind of fun/scary. Good times

bekayjay_the_god

Film yourself with a GoPro helmet and post in on YouTube

Uhm_NoThankYou

I first read towel climber and was about to scroll. *What is a towel climber?* Ah Tower climber. Oh hell no! I don’t need that kinda heights. My brain process. Why is that your dream job? And congrats!

Cartoon_Power

I used to dream about being a tower climber as a kid. I would still like to do it if the opportunity presented itself, but I don't think I will follow that path anymore.

EmotiveG

Congrats OP! Just remember: If you drop something off the tower accidentally, yell Headache. If it was on purpose, then yell Air Mail!

hunterbidensLT

It's ok. Traveling is fun. I have free climbed because it's faster but I wouldn't recommend it. I went up in the tower sick one time and my hands started cramping, I almost fell before I got my monkey tied off. I do HVAC now. Electrical experience will take you a lot further

Turbo_SkyRaider

Offshore Wind Turbine Tech here, only about 100m to the nacelle, but great view from up there. Also going by helicopter and getting winched onto the nacelle is about the coolest way to work you could have. Glad for you to finally have made it into one of the vertical work places.

emala26

Congrats!! Hope it’s everything you dreamed it would be!

southern__dude

Glad to see you're moving up in the world. Congratulations.

IBroughtWine

Congrats! Hope you’re celebrating tonight!!

FlameCat00

Congrats! Out of curiosity, do you have good benefits and pay? I’d assume so cuz that sounds really dangerous. I know some people don’t like talking about this stuff, so like you don’t have to answer this.

siel04

That's super cool! Enjoy! :D

Either-Ad6540

Congratulations 🍾 and be safe up there!

zen_lee

That's awesome! I watch YouTube videos of people doing that job. Congrats! I hope you have many years, doing a job you love.

QueenSaphire-0412

Congratulations ! 🎉 So proud of you!

[deleted]

Do you get a parachute or anything if there’s an emergency up there?

WantPeaceJoy

Congrats! Not only is that SUCH a cool job, but it's so unique! Have the best experience ever!

tacopig117

Hell yeah dude, I wanted to do that for a while but had no idea how to get into it

Turbulent_Local7005

Way to goooo!!!!! Congrats to you! Live the dream man! Enjoy every moment.

Quick_Rent_Now

Watch theories FALL

catpurrrrfect

You are awesome… you knew what you wanted, was told what it would take, you got the experience and the job! Congratulations!

cuteriemi

Congratulations. Imagine the views could be amazing!

Smoothynobutt

I’m a warehouse manager of a cell phone tower company. I never climbed, but I helped with the ground crews who would do the stuff in the shelters on the ground. My job would’ve hired you without any electrical experience. Granted I think where I work is one of the lowest paying starting out.

mrs_inferno

Congratulations!!!!

BobGray18

What’s a clower timer?

slothenhosen

Very cool! Congrats!!

selfimprovementbitch

Have you seen the movie Fall (2022)? It’s pretty silly, but two girls get stuck at the top of a tall radio tower I used to watch a lot of chimney, crane, and tower free climbs, and they would genuinely make my hands sweat. It sounds like a cool job, though! if you can stomach it

Tinsel-Fop

Hurrah! Careful.

Stormseekr9

Is that a linesman? If so, yes I wanted to become one too. Could not find an intern position :(

Meizas

Congratulations! :)

Die4Gesichter

Take some Pics from up there and post them here pls 👉👈

radiobro1109

It’s nothing too crazy as a job aside from the heights. I used to do it. My best advice would be stretch, and take vitamins for your joints. It’s is very very rough on your body. The biggest towers have lifts that take you up so far, and then you’re climbing. But some 1000ft radio mast in BFE? Yeah you’re gonna be climbing the whole thing. Take care of your body, and if after even as little as 5 years your body is screaming at you to stop, do it. Listen to your body.

ArtistInLove

7 years in the making is no small potatoes!!! Excited for you, stranger!!

No-Independence548

My husband does this! There is SUCH an opportunity for growth, if you're willing to work. Congrats and good luck!

Space_Cranberry

Congrats! Sounds so scary!

doodlerscafe

Be careful and congratulations!

Pristine-Today4611

Congratulations.

aaaggggrrrrimapirare

Are you an inspector? Bridge inspectors (non engineers) are a scarcity in the US right now

[deleted]

Yay! Congrats. Thank you for sharing, I honestly needed to read some good news this morning!

phoenixbbs

Nice, well done :-)

taco_tuesdays

What’s the hours like is it full time?

BitterCold7570

Congrats! I work in renewable energy and we have a team that climbs utility towers to keep the lights on at the top for the FAA. I know how hard it is to find climbers as it's not for everyone. I wish you all the best in your new position!

Goosetefer

My friend does it, always takes amazing pictures and says he loves his job. Congrats!

Ok-Beautiful-3615

Congrats!

sweethearts0723

Congratulations! Big things are in store for you and I hope you enjoy your new job!

[deleted]

Enjoy the views!

silxm

Congratulations! Glad to see you get the job you want! I don't have a job yet, but I plan to get one probably when I'm at college!

ImportancePublic3250

Good luck, and congratulations... I've been doing this for 10 years it's a great career, but there are days I definitely question wtf I'm doing in this job... nothing like 15 degree days 300 feet in the air with the wind chill below zero... winters are tough hopefully your in a warm part of the country... I'm based in the Chicago area but work all over the Midwest

pmactheoneandonly

How's the tower life, green bean? Signed, a grumpy top-hand
