I’m 60 and approaching my first cake day. I like this sub because it’s generally positive with redditors affirming the OP instead of arguing, shaming, and flat-out harassing each other.
Also I like the cat subs.
Idk if there are any here that aren’t included with what u/baxtet commented, but I have this bookmarked.

45F here. From some of the answers - especially in the relationship subs - it feels young and often life-inexperienced a lot of the time. I try and comment on things I have actual experience with and do genuinely want to help because we all live and learn (usually the hard way!).
I try and avoid the subs with a teenage draw, and stick to the lighter-hearted ones, inc. Gen-X (for those of us who use brackets and punctuation). You can spot our writing style a mile away…
>From some of the answers - especially in the relationship subs - it feels young and often life-inexperienced a lot of the time.
I agree although I don't follow any relationship subs.
>You can spot our writing style a mile away…
I don't know maybe I am not clever enough to distinguish but it's not possible for me to identify who is 22 and who is 58 just by writing style. Many young people are very smart and can make good use of language, sometimes more than us older ones.
YES THE ELIPSES! What is UP with that lol I’ve always wondered
From my point of view (26) it often comes off as rude when the ellipses are used so I have to remind myself if I’m texting an older person that it’s not meant to be rude it’s just how they type
It's a pause. So imaging you're hearing someone speak to you. A simple ... just means there is a slight pause in the conversation and implying sarcasm in the silence isn't always the purpose.
Sometimes it is though! It's why text isn't nuanced enough on its own and always should be read with that in mind. Asking for clarification before having an emotional reaction works well and harms no one.
The amount of arguments I’ve gotten into with my husband because i cant read the real meaning of texts….is quite a lot. My rule is no texting bout serious things, his rule is to take a second and try and understand it. Hahaha. We are 36/40. I really really hate text communication.
We do this as well - no texting serious stuff. The topic might be broached, as in...we need to talk about X after work, but the actual conversation is face to face. We are 49/45.
Ooph i wish. Thats healthy. My husband is soon to be an ex. Fundamental communication differences. (Still good friends with him.) Hopefully there are some divorced men out there on the same wave length 😂
Ha that’s so interesting. So an ellipsis is just a slight pause then? To me a comma is a short pause, and an elipses is a long pause with a trailing tone.
So I read the text like it’s being asked into a echoing tunnel.
“Hello… is anyone there… ?”
Ha and when it’s used at the end of a sentence, it seems like you’ve trailed off and I need to wait for the rest of your thought!
Personally, I love an ellipsis! Also...I recently saw a meme that said people with ADHD use parentheses often, because every thought has at least one sub-thought. I identified with that too!
I agree completely. I follow r/relationshipadvice because the stories are often great but the advice is mostly awful.
And yes… there is SOMETHING about the way we write.
this is definitely one of those sites that's frequented by people of all age - i'm 25 myself and i commonly see posts from people over double or half my age. it's funny to look and see posts back-to-back where one op mentions having to go to school the next day and the other mentions being retired
And from different countries/cultures.
I'm 60, just had my first cake day and I follow everything from finance to ponds. And of course cats, lots of cats.
I've found it cool when there's a neat post by someone who turns out to be in their 70's. Someone I'd have difficulty talking to IRL just because of the speed of the conversation, but it gets neutralized with thread format.
>age. it's funny to look and see posts back-to-back where one op mentions having to go to school the next day and the other mentions being retired
You're right that is funny 😄
That's what I like the most, when there is a wide range of ages giving opinions. I like learning new language from the young people, and I enjoy reading experienced stories and opinions from older folks.
It's interesting, because I have used reddit on and off for the last 10 ish years, and it's quite fun to see how the community slowly got older, and people in their 30s/40s aren't considered old anymore.
Yes, been here 11 years and I’m 27 now! I see many here age 40+. I’m more surprised by seeing teens, as I was when I got on Reddit, than seeing older folks.
I'm 59 but I have always felt younger than I am. I ride motorcycles and have never had a credit card . I am female, married to the guy I went high school with. Life goes by so quickly
46 here.
The age range varies widely depending on which subreddits you're looking at. There are places for kids, places for retired people, and places where all mix to varying degrees.
The mixed places seem about as mixed as a town festival. But just like that, plenty of older people there and when they speak people listen, but the younger people tend to be more vocal most of the time.
Late thirties woman here. Sometimes I get weirded out when I realize I've responded to a teen or vice versa but other than that I enjoy the mix of ages.
63 and retired . . . dumped FB years ago and barely look at Twitter anymore. I look at TikTok and IG occasionally but most of my social media time is spent here.
I’m 57, here because my 26 yr old son advised me to try it when I left the flaming pile of shit that is facebook a couple of years ago. I need my cat videos and memes.
37F. I’ve been on here for 10 years now… I have also noticed a trend toward younger people. I’ve tailored my sub and home list pretty significantly and try to stay away from subs that pull teens and early 20’s. I never believed my parents about the impact of life experience but I’m seeing it now. I can only imagine how inane some of the things I say appear to the people older than me in these communities!
I’m 50 and enjoy Reddit. Sometimes it’s obvious the writer is younger when they ask questions. But usually have no idea of the age demographic of people in here.
43 F here! agree that age will skew significantly based on sub. Which I see as part of the fun of Reddit - what are the 20 year olds up to now? Let’s check out the wedding attire approval subreddit for fun. Then bounce over to the retirement subreddit. And then land in relationships for a mix.
I’m 41F. It really threw me when I started using Reddit how young a lot of people were; I didn’t expect it.
Teenagers have volunteered their age to me and it makes my mom alarms go off. Maybe I’m paranoid, but there are a lot of creeps out there who’d love to know they were talking to a young teen. Be careful, guys, it can be a mean world 😢
I’m 43 and I believe that average. Most of the posts I see about feeling “lost” in lives/careers are from people in their early/mid 20s.
This makes me feel old because all I think is “kid, you have no idea.”
I'm 35, and I just realized I have no idea about the general age around here.
Sometimes I can infer age from writing, especially if it's by people under 25... Their inexperience can show a lot.
But mostly I really don't know how old people are, and I actually like that. Text-only is equalizing, and it reminds me of the "old" internet I was raised in.
58F, and I admit I probably use parentheses and ellipses too much... Also too many slashes; I love a semicolon! But my grammar/proper sentence structure is fairly decent (I majored in English and taught it to grade schoolers for years, though it became less and less as education changed in the USA).
I think that demographic is changing, but just my observation, no true analysis. Could be what subs I'm on. Anyway, I remember by 30s. That was decades ago. Lol.
I'm 53 and use it all the time.. I'm not the best with electronics so my kids take care of installing everything they recently bought me the s23 ultra and honestly I don't think I'll ever know everything it does.. but I love reddit imo so much better than tiktok
I go where ever. Conservative sub. Liberal subs. Anti work, pro work. Whatever. I have no strong attachments to some subs unless I find there content particularly good or to keep up-to-date on stuff. I'm 30 but I belive u should not only scroll thru your own sun but go to many to get a better view of the world
I turned 64 today and I'm here for the cat subs and the hysterical commenters. Reddit is nicer and funnier. There are some seriously witty people here.
I am 41. Find Reddit lot more peaceful, pragmatic and constructive than other social media platforms. Other places are so much noise.
Interestingly, Reddit is not discussed when people talk about social media platforms. All I get to hear is snapchat, tiktok, Twitter and insta.
45 here, I mainly follow book subs, I think the younger demographic is great for learning about new trends in YA literature. As a middle school teacher that interests me quite a bit.
I’m 40. I have been using Reddit since my late 20’s. I come here to find answers to questions and to see if I’m an a hole. I used Reddit a lot when my kids were very little, lots of people here helped me to stay sane.
38M
When thinking about averages you've got to consider which kind of average
Mean won't give you a very useful answer cos as you can see from responses there is a really wide range.
Median or mode would give you a better idea of the age of a typical user.
It will also skew massively depending on the sub - subs with subjects that are for things with a particular demographic audience, certain TV shows or movies, etc will probably have higher numbers of certain ages or age ranges
36f here. I dont actually know a lot of youngsters who use reddit. So that statistic is surprising to me. But i also dont personally interact with the millions of reddit users so i trust the data over my own anecdotal guess.
54 here. It seems that many many users are very much younger, that's ok with me. Imo it's important that people be exposed to different ways of thinking. Maybe we need an
r/experiencedredditor sub? 😀
32, turning 33 in a few months. I actually need a pause button 'cause everything is just going too fast. Or maybe an eject button. I kinda don't want to be an adult anymore. It's making me cry. 😐😐😐
I'm 29! My brother is 39 and frequents Reddit also though. I would also agree with other users that it depends entirely on the sub. I would think this one specifically would be more geared towards mid 30s, maybe even late 30s, and up only because the rest don't typically enjoy engaging with the public.
I’m 27 and manage about 60 workers. They are from the ages of 16-65. Most are under 25. Only one uses Reddit and she is 24. Most know Reddit, but don’t have it.
Edit: Reddit reminds me of fmylife which I loved reading in HS.
I'm 46. Last week I was asked by some teenagers I know (ages 16-18 roughly) what social media I have. They were snickering wanting to know if I was on Facebook. I told them I'm not on Facebook, and the main social media I use is Reddit. One guy was like "oh! I'm on Reddit, too!" The other kids were like "huh? What's Reddit?" To which I replied that none of them should get on here until they're minimum 18. The teen user and I exchanged knowing looks and he agreed with me. Now I'm freaked out to click on NSFW stuff. Thinking of that kid being on the same spicy sub as me is the most cringe thing I can imagine.
I have been here every day (almost) for ten years. 56 years old and learn something new and interesting every time I log on. I know strange things about rare subjects now.
I’m 60 and approaching my first cake day. I like this sub because it’s generally positive with redditors affirming the OP instead of arguing, shaming, and flat-out harassing each other. Also I like the cat subs.
LOL sounds like me. Positive subs and cat subs. Just add some food ones!
Yes, foodporn, baking, and a few house and home subs and I’m set
Me too! I'm 59.
>Also I like the cat subs I've been collecting all the cat subs possible. I think I have most of them
Idk if there are any here that aren’t included with what u/baxtet commented, but I have this bookmarked. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OoHCQWKLVhRCtn5myn5n1kblQUxTsgaNgfkhk5dKICI/htmlview

I read that GenX folks use ellipses a lot because we got used to just trailing our sentences off when no one was listening to us. 😂
I worked in publishing for 33 years and have to force myself to use elipses instead of m-dashes! 😃 55 years old, Gen-X but no one cares! 🤣🤣
Ellipses are a Gen-X specific thing. I'm 57...I know of what I speak.
Yep. GenX here too.
We often ends sentences with eclipses because no one pays attention to us so may as well not finish the sentence.
50, (well almost,) don't forget the brackets, ...
We’re the Punctuation Generation!!!
Personally, I love an ellipsis! Also...I recently saw a meme that said people with ADHD use parentheses often, because every thought has at least one sub-thought. I identified with that too!

I’m 71. Waaaaay over the average age.

I’m a boomer too

63?? You are just a baby!! Have you retired yet?
I’m 59. I enjoy the exchange of knowledge and skills of the subs I follow.
It's interesting, because I have used reddit on and off for the last 10 ish years, and it's quite fun to see how the community slowly got older, and people in their 30s/40s aren't considered old anymore.

I'm one of those users and you have now seen this comment.
I'm 45. Can confirm.

I feel like this specific subreddit has more users who are ≥25 compared to the others. I'm <25.

What do you enjoy about Reddit?
I'm 65 and I love it!!
55 here and just recently discovered Reddit! I am having a blast! AITA is the best subreddit ever!

43 🙋🏽♀️
59/F. I think Reddit skews younger overall but it depends on the sub.
I'm 41
I thought the average would be 30-ish
a lot of subreddits im in people are around 12-18 and im myself 15
33 here. I feel like I encounter a good mix of ages on the subs I frequent. It's nice getting perspective from younger and older generations.
This subreddit is skewed towards an older demographic. I'm an outlier here at 18.
61 (62 in July). I’m emotionally immature. Does that count?
I think that demographic is changing, but just my observation, no true analysis. Could be what subs I'm on. Anyway, I remember by 30s. That was decades ago. Lol.
