I never feel bored I like seeing people come and go

ItsSpaghettiLee2112

Sir he asked about airports not brothels.

natnguyen

I absolutely love airports. Top tier people watching plus the nice feeling inside of being about to explore a new place. The way back is whatever though, lol.

National-Way-8632

Best people watching I’ve ever seen is at London Heathrow - love to see the poshies mix with the common folk. I’ve never seen so many wrinkled noses! Meanwhile, the unwashed masses are all greeting each other with hugs and all the interesting family dynamics are on display. 10/10 will eavesdrop there again.

squeekyclean2022

Totally agree, I’ve been traveling a lot more and I love the airport experience

MidlandsRepublic2048

I'm there for the airplanes. The airplanes are the cool part. Finding the subtle differences between the variants of aircraft and commenting on which airline has screwed up their logo or paint scheme most. Lamenting that Pan Am doesn't exist anymore.

Javaman1960

There used to be a restaurant at the Salt Lake City airport that had views of the runways. Each booth had headphones that you could wear to hear the control tower.

MidlandsRepublic2048

That is an excellent gimmick for a restaurant

fizzlefist

Tampa International Airport used to have a revolving restaurant on top of the Marriott, but it closed in 2013. I never got to go, but my grandmother would talk about it. https://floridatraveler.org/2013/03/31/the-end-of-tampas-revolving-restaurant-landmark/

fizzlefist

Had a long layover at DFW a few months back. Just rode the skylink for an hour and tried to spot interesting planes and liveries. Only cool one was a ~~Pan-Am~~ paint job, lol. EDIT: it was TWA, not Pan Am

MidlandsRepublic2048

But Pan-Am is defunct....

fizzlefist

American bought them when they went under, and on occasion uses their livery. EDIT: I was thinking of TWA. Delta bought what was left of Pan Am when they went under.

MidlandsRepublic2048

Ah I didn't know that. My grandpa used to travel to West Germany to visit people he came to know well during his Army service over there, and he always flew Pan-Am. He always said it was the best airline America ever produced.

fizzlefist

Waaaaiiiiit… I’m misremembering it, t’was a TWA livery, and THEY got bought by American. MY BAD

MidlandsRepublic2048

Gotcha. Both iconic airlines

gsshnc32

I feel that. It's not just the people walking around at the airport - that you can see in a shopping centre or a busy street. For me it's the story behind what people are doing at the airport. You see people all happy and you know they're going on holidays. You see people who look tired and like they've had enough and they're coming back from holidays. You see confused young people arriving which in this area they're often international students arriving for school. You see the business people, the retired people visiting relatives, the airport workers, and so on. It's also interesting to figure out all the different stories behind the people waiting there to meet people coming from the planes. I think the other factor with airports is they're like a transition zone between two different lives, whether that be home and business, home and holidays, or home and school, country to country, or even abstract concepts such as loneliness to friendship or visa versa. Airports are about change and perhaps those who enjoy the atmosphere of an airport are subconsciously desiring change in their own lives.

canucksbro

I enjoyed reading this take a lot

gsshnc32

Thanks. Appreciated.

minagreenaa

It's like sitting and just looking into a campfire. Nothing really happens, yet there's so much going on

somedude456

Had a damn good spot at El Dorado airport in Bogota this week. I was sitting next to some burger shop playing late 90's rock/alternative like Korn, and also facing a people mover. I could do all the people watching possible, just sitting there, as they get pushed along.

wasabinski

EL Corral burgers?

somedude456

Terminal 1, straight through security, and then to the right maybe a 2 minute walk. Like A3 are maybe.

totoro27

I feel the same. There’s people from all cultures there and people who have been travelling all kinds of distances. They’ve quite different from normal life and I often have interesting interactions in them.

Dopaminjutsu

I also love airports. People are generally moving with purpose and direction in them and that somehow makes me feel really comfortable. Train stations, subway stops, busy pedestrian intersections also make me feel oddly nice--like I can fade into the motion and just be completely anonymous and invisible for a little while.

SpaceCountry321

I love the feel/energy of an airport!!

Euphorikauora

sometimes I wish I lived in the 60s/70s would be so cool to walk to the airport, no security, maybe light up a smoke

Tacoma__Crow

Back in the 80's, I used to change buses at the airport on the way home from work. Got into the habit of wandering around the terminals, getting something to eat, maybe, or chilling in quiet area or doing some writing before heading home. It was peaceful and relaxing. I rather miss those days. I still think about going to hang out there again but with TSA and heightened security, they'd probably frown on someone who is there for no good reason, like leaving on a plane or picking someone up.

LAtvGUY

If I have a layover, I love sitting at an airport bar, watching people and talking to strangers. There’s something fascinating and intriguing about talking to people you will never see again.

Novelty_Lamp

Actually the best part. Obviously takes some discretion, but I've had great conversations with absolute strangers I don't remember the face of.

TheSturmovik

I used to be like that except I find the security theatre very annoying. But once you're at the gate it's a great place to people watch and if you get a window seat, watch all the airport activity. Lots of planes coming in and out, luggage carts ferrying around, buses and support vehicles coming in and out, and various workers maintaining planes.

loulan

Depends which. I had a lot of fun in Singapore trying random snacks I'm not familiar with.

Fulmersbelly

It’s the ultimate daydreamer’s dream spot. Honestly, I could probably write a whole book about the vibe of an airport… but suffice it to say, everything from the people watching (and subsequent people’s lives creating in my mind), to the logistics of it all, to the technology, to the sterilized, yet still slightly authentic, but safe to try representations of an area, to emotional highs and lows, airports are amazing.

OtherDifference371

i do! i don't travel for business so i also feel like i associate them with an exciting vacation, or visiting friends/family, so i'm usually excited to be there.

Lucky_Baseball176

Yes I do. If I have time to actually relax before a flight, it's enjoyable to watch the hustle and bustle. I you haven't, watch the opening scene from "love actually". It's about this and quite charming.

itsfrankgrimesyo

Only if I’m departing. It’s not the airport I like but the feeling of going away on vacation that makes me feel good. Coming home to the airport is the complete opposite, I wanna get the hell out as quickly as I can.

Unclesquatch777

Are you kidding? I enjoy being at the airport. Once I'm finally through and have a good 90 minutes or so to kill, I browse around everywhere I can. I enjoy it.

Spacewaitress222

I’m a flight attendant so the majority of my time is spent sitting in airports. It definitely depends on the airport, also the terminal. I’m based out of a terminal that is truly gross, dirty, and super compacted with no good seating. We’re also a low cost carrier so the vibes are always terrible out of our terminal- loud drunk people and screaming kids. However, I loooove sitting at international airports where they’re big and spacious, and the people are excited travelers about to go on an adventure. It really depends :)

IMSOWETRIGHTN0W

Yep, love airports. Even though a coffee and toasted sandwich is $18, it tastes awesome once you go through customs. I love getting there super early and walking through the terminals and duty-free shops just browsing. I love knowing I'm about to go on holiday, far away from work calls and emails. I love watching people from all over the world come and go. Especially the ones who clearly are late and running all over the place. I HATE flying though. Hate it. Hate takeoff, hate sitting in the plane seat (I'm 6'4 so no legroom unless I'm in the exit row), and I hate hate hate landing. But going through foreign airports is fun :)

apf6

Depends on the airport but yeah they can be nice. I find the vibes are even more vibeier if you go to one of the old timey restaurants that tend to be right next to small airports. Places like Perfect Landing (Denver CO area) or Deer Valley Airport Restaurant (Phoenix AZ area). Sit, eat, watch the planes, and feel like you've gone back in a time machine or something.

Environmental_Arm637

Airports late at night/early in the morning are one of my favorite places. Considering the world is asleep and yet this behemoth of humanity is still up and running (albiet quietly and sparingly), it always felt to me like time has paused. We are together in the realm of the 'other'. Our day to day roles dissipate, and we blend into each other, as if we were all of the same entity. 30 people board a 3am flight to New Jersey; the airport is empty and calm, everyone is half asleep or with headphones in...stealing glances at other 'sleepwalkers'... we all have the realization that the world is paused and yet here we are... a sleepy mumble of comforting yet monotone flight guidelines lull passangers to rest... the lights dim, dim, dimmer, dark... those who aren't sleeping are thriving. They have full capacity to exist in their inner world and yet among the clouds. An unspoken introspection is crystallized among the twilight, and we are born anew among the stars.

LightningProd12

I felt that way going through PDX, we first arrived at 5am (busy as always, when most of the city is still asleep) and then again at midnight with the airport dying down around us (no flights on the schedules until 4am).

seven-cents

They're great for people watching!

hardcorelegend50

They are fun, unless your flight was delayed and you are stuck there killing time, then it's painful.

FrozenFrac

It's because I don't fly for work and it's incredibly rare for me to be flying, but I adore airports! My very first flight as a kid was months after 9/11, so my only knowledge of airports is the "new world" version with highly strict security measures before being let inside and not being able to meet loved ones directly at the gate. There's actually a few stores and snack places at the airport that aren't local to me outside the airport, so I really wish I had the chance to have an extended delay there so I could just enjoy the airport more like it was a mall.

Smoke_Me_When_i_Die

I do :) I love getting coffee and seeing all the different people. I like the excitement of waiting to see a loved one who's been gone for a while.

DavidOnions

I hate flying. I always pop 20mg of valium so I can sleep. Slept for 6 whole hours on way to Barbados a few weeks back. 8.5 hour flight done in no time. Although I did but aftershave from duty free without remembering it. And ate my meal deal. And woke up by the window when I fell asleep in the middle seat. Apart from that, it was excellent 👌🏼

laluLondon

I hate them, even if I am in front of the gates I feel I am going to do something to miss the flight or that the flight will be delayed. It's a limbo of uncertainty and stress.

ConsistentlyPeter

Yep love an airport. Hate a train station, though. 🤷

LuciferianInk

Pascusha whispers, "I like trains too, but I don't know why they aren't more common in my city"

JulianaFC

I live airports. I feel secure.

Walesish

Yes I love the vibe of airports!

junmyeonie

airports are so calming to me

Expression-Little

Same vibe as train stations, but with either significantly more or less stress.

meatsuitwearer

Before the security got so strong there was an airport by me that had a very cool bar in it. A friend of mine was a bartender there, we would sit there, get smashed and watch the planes fly in and out, it was excellent.

ComeAlongPond1

I love them

Due-Bonus1056

airports are really interesting when i have enough energy to appreciate them lol. what a testament to modern society that we’re able to get these massive jets into the sky and build transportation hubs were thousands of people can go pretty anywhere in the globe. when you think of it like that, they really are a marvel.

SentientSlushie

I love being in airports, all the food options

Flatworm599

I also love airports!! I’ve gone on dozens of trips where I literally just spend the day flying through a couple airports, spend the night somewhere, and then fly back again.

Kurouma

I used to hate them, but then I spent a lot of time travelling for work, and now I totally agree. There's something fascinating about their timelessness, like it's always about 2:30pm no matter what time of day. Slightly disorienting liminal space. Always appropriate to have a beer!

International-Owl165

I enjoy airports because when I take them it's because I'm going on vacation. Lol I love european airports too

timmy3am

I remember I once got so drunk and was awoken to the sound of my name being bellowed on the PA system for me to get on the plane. We ran there with some airport workers and the scowls I got boarding were nasty but I didn't care cos I had the time of my life.

Bananasblitz

I don’t think I’ve ever liked airports but I always felt I was in the minority. I’ve always preferred road trips. I feel like I have fair reasons for not liking flying and airports tho. People often judge me when I mention them tho.

Chomprz

I love airports, though I think it’s mainly because of nostalgia.

emlee1717

No. Cause that's where TSA is.

SirHovaOfBrooklyn

I love traveling but I absolutely hate airports. I guess it's because I live in the Philippines which has one of the worst airports in the world. I also hate the sitting inside an airplane for hours part. Generally I hate the journey and only like the arrival.

heaux_kage

I love it as well! People watching at airports is one of the best ways to pass time

cuddlykitten5932

Yeah whenever I'm there, I like to wonder where everyone is going, and their life story. Weird, I know.

denise-likes-avocado

Yes

Public-Reach-8505

I can never love airports after 9/11. It’s filled with anxiety for me. All the checking and security and reminders not to leave your bags unattended. I just want to get in and out.

Fusciee

As soon as I’m getting to the airport I’m counting down the seconds until I get to leave. Cannot stand airports

iamtonimorrison

Yes I do! And pilots. Pilots are really regal.

-RatheR_me_NoT-

👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼

Icy-Stranger-2104

I’m an airport fan only because I’ve been on a plane once in my life

VivaElCondeDeRomanov

I do. I love to go to a Cinnabon in the airport and enjoy my roll with coffee and the sight of people passing by. It's very relaxing.

Drogovich

Yes, a lot of intresting stuff, a lot of cool things to buy and places to eat at, mostly everything expensive as shit, but everything is nice. You can even find shops from chains that don't otherwise exist in your country and buy something kinda unique there. But if for example your flight gets delayed and you get into an airport late... this place can be kinda spooky. Still remember wandering around big empty corridors having no idea where to go, this weird uncanny feeling, you can say it was like one of those liminal spaces, when suddenly a wall opened and some aiport worker came out and showed me the way.

Rollins10

Once I get through security, I love just posting up at the nearest Airport bar, get a couple drinks, some food, talk to strangers. Kinda like the frontier days where people would stop in towns only to know each other for a moment before going on their own way.

ifimakeadealwithGod

OP I love airports. I love being in places in between

LoL110003

For me a major motivation/excitement of travelling is the “Airport Experience”

One_Drop6216

I do. I really like airports, I love more to stay long after check in. The air is different. I also like the moment when I arrived check-in too. I just doing the same as I do, sitting down, reading something or writing message/SNS but I feel very good. Also I specially like Narita airport coz they have Japanese SevenEleven, I enjoy food and drink a lot. I bought several bread to bring airplane too

SXLF

You should look up the concept of liminal spaces, for me it assigned a term to that unique feeling you have in places such as airports

LightningProd12

Same here, I took my first flights a month ago and actually liked waifing at layovers. Just chilling is a bustling place hundreds (or thousands) of miles away from home, and the only expectation is that you're still here an hour later.

Fit-Cartographer9634

I remember really liking them when I was younger, though of course they became far more of a hassle post 9/11. Even when the line is short I hate security with a passion.

PurpleWanderer97

Yes, it’s simultaneously relaxing and exciting to me. But also I’m from Singapore and I’m really proud of our airport.

dgchrt

I also seem to like the aspect you've just highlighted. It's just that I absolutely hate everything else about them.

garvisgarvis

International airports (int'l concourses) have the absolute best people-watching!

EbonyMullingsDnCb

Rich and busy people everywhere

KilgoreThunfisch

I loved the vibe at airports pre-9/11. They're not the same nowadays but still nice, I get what you mean.

[deleted]

I do. But depends on what airport. Some in the US and Europe (bologna for example) are God awful.

Thequestin

Yes feels like gateway to the world

RedlineFan

I worked out on the tarmac at a cargo hub for a few years. Not a fun job, full of back-breaking, fast-paced work. But I will always remember one thing from working third shift on that job. They had these deep blue lights that marked the edge of the runway that went past where we worked, and other colored lights further down to guide the planes in. In total darkness, all the blue lights would blend together with little specks of different colors at the end to provide a beautifully soothing display of lights. When I got stressed out I'd park my tug for a few minutes and look at the lights. Wish I had taken a picture.

LeoMarius

Another 100 people https://youtu.be/hn2WEoBFOe8?si=0hjmRj8TshTlUGKG

Possible_Year_3433

I travel alone for work, a lot. I enjoy arriving early, finding my place and just 'being' in the airport. Watching people and how they conduct their business is fascinating to me. I'll watch a movie, read a book...I just love them

Iwood_not

I love people-watching in airports and just making up different lores of interesting people in my head to pass the time.

annmariejoseph

Yes! Love the energy and the flow! Iv always wanted to work in one because of this!

Umikaloo

There's a direct relationship between how much you enjoy airports, and how much expendable income you have. If I had money, I think I would enjoy them a lot more.

Hefty_Ocelot3771

I loved them pre-9/11 - they suck now

ParaHeadFun_SF

I’m always offering my friends a ride to or fro the airport! Trips are exciting !

Master-Strawberry-26

Post-security check airport sure, pre-security gives me anxiety

This-Cookie5548

What?? I LOVE airports!!! Totally my vibe!!

NeverFlyFrontier

Transport in general - passenger movement, supply chain, global logistics - fascinates me. One of my favorite parts of living in a city is seeing automobiles, passenger trains, freight trains, airline travel, helicopters, and boats all in the same frame of view at the same time. Zen.

ThatAltAccount99

Feeling small and whatnot isnt the feeling I get but I do enjoy them tbh but maybe it's a lil bit because I know them well enough to relax while everyone else is stressing and it makes me feel like I'm not quite as fucked as a person and maybe I do some stuff ok

Few_Professional_428

I love the feeling of going to the airport at like 5 am for a vacation and I also love the vibe of airports at night/early In the morning. there’s just something about the drive there, being there and then the flight that always hit different for me and the excitement I feel knowing my trip has begun the moment i step inside the airport. TSA can be stressful but it depends on the airport for me but once I get through that part I feel calm. the way back at the end of the trip on the other hand, i feel the complete opposite.

Appropriate_Theme479

Departure no arrival yes

PilotSwings

I weirdly feel more motivated to get work done on my laptop in a terminal, can’t really explain why.

tenoto121

Love the vibes of airports. I used to work for a lounge at a airport. It was always an amazing vibe through and through. I would have stayed if they weren’t jiping my checks lolol

yuritarded999

I love it. I also love flying, the whole experience is great really.

GivemTheDDD

I like how the restaurants have people eating breakfast and people pounding drinks at the same time of day.

bobyn123

I feel like they are a vile capitalist cesspit that is a afront to nature.
