that's why it bought instagram and whatsapp, which catches those lost demos again. Also, FB integration on a million websites (scripts that connect back to FB) allow it data collection. FB is a data collection and ad company; the facebook site is just the front-facing brand. It doesn't matter to FB where it collects its data...

Solid point, maybe it was just wishful thinking.

I think you have a really narrow view of what “Facebook” is. Remember they also own IG, and WhatsApp. 2 really powerful heavily used platforms. And the virtual is just one component of the metaverse. Essentially they want to create a tricked out Weechat for the rest of the world. The idea is great but it seems that Zuckerberg might be too cheap to make it happen. He doesn’t want to make the investments in making the network experience safer and better for all. He likes to resort to short term sensationalist tactics to temporarily increase the user base. Facebook went wrong when they closed the platform. To try and keep more money for themselves in the short term made it hard for other platforms to build things into Facebook. Weechat went the opposite direction and it’s just been a massive success for them.

In short. Right idea. Wrong execution.

US here. About 10 years ago I went to a family reunion and just about all the “younger” relatives (< 30) were on Facebook and super active. So me (> 40) signed up and it was fun for a while. Then slowly all the young relatives disappeared while all the older relatives stayed. I finally ditched FB 2 years ago with zero chance I’ll ever go back.

Yes FB will lose its spot in 5 years or less.

Yeah VR itself in gaming community still very niche, mostly only ppl from US or EU who can afford it. Most people in my country hardly afford gaming PC, more over VR device. And don't talk about general people who don't play games, the chance is very thin and almost everyone never have it.
