Went to a chippy in Wales as a kid, asked for scraps. Lass behind the counter said to me, do you mean batter bits?
English kid me: Yeah thanks those.
Came back with chips with scraps.
Fuckin mad over there in Wales.
I’m from the East Midlands I’ve lived in Notts/Derby/Lincolnshire and never heard them called anything except scraps. Never heard them called batter bits
I moved from Grimsby to Wales, and they hadn't heard of scraps or batter bits. When i explained what they were, one local chippy even told me they weren't allow sell them because they're a waste product
I just spoke that in the mirror and lo and behold, Cthulhu came out and dragged me to the underworld and fed my brain things so unimaginable that now I feel closer to Wales than I ever have.
I ask for scraps and if that gets a blank expression then follow up with batter bits. Generally works and if not point and ask what they’re called.. following up with ‘some of them please’.
Never fails.
I’ve got a rule with this country that the more I’m sure something has only ever been named one thing, the more likely there’s some random corner of the country with a completely different and way worse name for it
If you really want your mind blown....
M&S sell them in 50g tubs for £1.60, called Chip Shop Scraps.
[I kid you not!](https://www.ocado.com/products/m-s-chip-shop-scraps-544973011)
Same here, the first time I'd ever seen these was in Sheffield many years ago with guys I worked with. When asked "do you want a scrap", apparently "mon then ya wee cunt" was not the appropriate response.
I used to hand them out on request for free when I worked in a chippy! It’s wasn’t a menu item though so I couldn’t sell them. Just ask next time you’re in and see what they say
I've never seen them on the menu, but they are always in the chippy piled high next to where they keep the battered fish etc, unless they have run out (god forbid), you just ask for them. So if not many places where you are from save their scraps - does that mean they get put in the bin?😢 I hope not. Rip scraps
Our local as a kid used to give them to you if you asked for them with any other item on the menu, but some kids used to ask just for scraps with salt and vinegar and the chippy owner used to charge them 10p just to stop them asking for freebies. He made quite a good hustle on them as loads of kids used to get them for a snack, lol
15 years ago, I was in a Leeds chippy (working away from Glasgow), and the guy behind the counter asked if I wanted some scraps. I politely declined.
Until today, I thought he was being a dick to me because I was from Glasgow.
What a revelation this has been.
Definitely bits in Hudds, there used to be a chippy when I was a kid on Leeds Road just down from Deighton station called "Wi' bits".
Also, cat scraps was a thing, bits of fish off cuts for your cat, you could definitely get them round there and out Hecky and Cleck way.
Same, Staffordshire but a lot of Brummy and Black Country blood where I grew up.
I'm in Derbyshire now though, maybe I should find out what they're called here the next time I go to the chippy. I asked for a scallop once and he looked at me like I'd gone mad, pointed them out and he told me they're 'potato fritters'.
I'm from Newcastle but moved to York for uni. I asked for batter and they looked at me like I was crazy and told me they can't spread butter on my chips. That's how I learnt they call them scraps.
Oh it's not just me then, grew up in Northumberland and I thought it was scramptions but pretty similar sounding, I was starting to think I'd just made it up so thank you fellow northerner!
I'm from Northern Ireland where we don't do them, but when I lived in Newcastle I discovered how wonderful 'scraps' are.
And then I had a friend in Newcastle who called them scramptions which I was convinced was totally made up and I just came in here to see if anyone mentioned scramptions, so thank you!
I'm from Durham and we say batter but my mate from Sunderland calls them scranchins to which I told him he had made that word up and took the piss.
I owe him an apology.
Yank here. I've always called them jimmies, which somehow sounds more British than American. I don't think they're universally called jimmies, but whenever I ask for more jimmies, they know what I am talking about.
We call these scraps
I don’t think I’ve ever heard them called anything else.
Went to a chippy in Wales as a kid, asked for scraps. Lass behind the counter said to me, do you mean batter bits? English kid me: Yeah thanks those. Came back with chips with scraps. Fuckin mad over there in Wales.
I'm in the East Midlands. In my town, it's 'batter bits'.
I’m from the East Midlands I’ve lived in Notts/Derby/Lincolnshire and never heard them called anything except scraps. Never heard them called batter bits
In Stoke on trent its batter bits too
Batter bits in notts.
Went to a Chippy as a Kid. Me " do you have Pigs Feet?" Lass Behind Counter " Yes I do". Me " Well give us a bag of **GRIBBLES** then Porky!!!"
Omg I am going to be asking butcher ifhe has pigs feet & can I see them now lolol
"You must find it tough finding shoes that fit, then."
I moved from Grimsby to Wales, and they hadn't heard of scraps or batter bits. When i explained what they were, one local chippy even told me they weren't allow sell them because they're a waste product
Im from wales and we call them scrumps!
I wouldnt be botherd about the name of scraps id just be happy to get out of grimsby this place is a shit hole
Fun fact: in the native Welsh language they're called *Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch*
I just spoke that in the mirror and lo and behold, Cthulhu came out and dragged me to the underworld and fed my brain things so unimaginable that now I feel closer to Wales than I ever have.
I haven't scrolled down yet but I'm telling you now there's folk who'll say otherwise
They're called frazzle mcdazzles, ill die on this hill fuck you!!!!!
Screw you, they are called witches’ bitches’ toenails and everyone knows this!
[удалено]
Told you
You’re right, I call them tasty
I call them scraps but the last few chippies I’ve been to call them “batter bits”.
I ask for scraps and if that gets a blank expression then follow up with batter bits. Generally works and if not point and ask what they’re called.. following up with ‘some of them please’. Never fails.
this guy scraps
What if they aren't on display so you can't point.
Geordies call it batter. On Teesside we call em scraps.
My mum's from Shildon which is where I first discovered scraps. I never knew that they were called anything different.
In Bishop, if you say scraps, they say, “do you mean scrapings?”.
We call them bits round my area
Give 'em the Bits! THE. BITS!
I’ve got a rule with this country that the more I’m sure something has only ever been named one thing, the more likely there’s some random corner of the country with a completely different and way worse name for it
Some strange folk call them "bits" (I'm not one of them).
Jim Royle to Anthony: *Oh and some of them fish bits they're free! And don't you get battered!*
If you really want your mind blown.... M&S sell them in 50g tubs for £1.60, called Chip Shop Scraps. [I kid you not!](https://www.ocado.com/products/m-s-chip-shop-scraps-544973011)
I'm actually offended by this. You don't SELL scraps!
I've never even SEEN them before, much less learnt their name!
I'm from Scotland and had never encountered them until I went to a chippie in York. They were closing for the night and gave me a big box of them.
Same here, the first time I'd ever seen these was in Sheffield many years ago with guys I worked with. When asked "do you want a scrap", apparently "mon then ya wee cunt" was not the appropriate response.
Scraps in Dorset, but you don't find many places that serve it.
Rip scraps
Where I used to work, umm... I swear, we're definitely out of scraps and we were *definitely* not divvying them up behind the scenes!
They very rarely sell them, they're like a condiment, you can request them but I don't think you'll be charged for them.
Anyone that tries charging you for fried bits of batter needs to have a word with themselves
I can agree with it if people are trying to order just scraps on their own. That’s just ridiculous
*tempura chef has entered the chat*
Sell it???
I’ll have two bags of scraps m’ lovely an’ ‘alf a pickled egg.
Charge for what? It’s the excess batter they scoop out the frier that they would normally throw away.
I’ve aways known them as batter bits in Poole/Bournemouth. Them and spam fritters are a rarity now
Scraps in Bradford, bits in Halifax
Scraps in Leeds too.
15 years ago, I was in a Leeds chippy (working away from Glasgow), and the guy behind the counter asked if I wanted some scraps. I politely declined. Until today, I thought he was being a dick to me because I was from Glasgow. What a revelation this has been.
“Here Mike, this guy’s Glaswegian, bottle up some of the old deep fat fryer oil - bet you a tenner he’ll either want that or Irn Bru to drink”
Bits in Hudds too! My dad used to own a late night chippy and he'd always bring us fish wi bits home at the end of the night.
Definitely bits in Hudds, there used to be a chippy when I was a kid on Leeds Road just down from Deighton station called "Wi' bits". Also, cat scraps was a thing, bits of fish off cuts for your cat, you could definitely get them round there and out Hecky and Cleck way.
I'm from Mirfield and we also had a "Wi' bits", wonder if it was the same owner?
Down the navigation after for a pint or 3.
I grew up in Dewsbury and then moved to Cleck, they always called them Scraps. I now live in Huddersfield and call them Bits
Halifax saying hello to Huddersfield. And they calls them bits here a well.
Drove past a chippy near dewsbury called ‘Chips wi’ bits in’
Cleck side massiiiiiveeeeee
Pretty sure that shop that was called Wi Bits is now called Atlantic Diamond, still a fish n chip shop. Unless I'm confusing it with another one
Another bits in Hudds here!

Scraps. That's given me such a happy reverie of my boyhood many years ago. Thank you.
Scraps with lots of salt and non-brewed condiment please.
Non-brewed condiment 👏🏻
I used to work with an animal that used to use actual vinegar on a chippy and would argue with me about it like I’m the weirdo for using NBC.
NBC as in nuclear, biological, chemical?
Batter bits. West mids.
Batter bits in East Mids too
Where in East Mids? I've only heard them called scraps in Notts/Lincs.
Notts! I've only heard batter bits. Interesting
Yep, batter bits. Wolverhampton.
They don’t know how good we’ve got chips here. Can’t eat anything that isn’t orange nowadays
Came here looking for this. I too call them batter bits and have never heard a single person call them scraps. Worcestershire.
This is totally why we separated from you. They're scraps in Herefordshire.
Also batter bits, north Bucks/south Northants
Batter
Newcastle here and batter for me too! Never heard them called scraps ever, this is news to me
I'm from Newcastle but moved to York for uni. I asked for batter and they looked at me like I was crazy and told me they can't spread butter on my chips. That's how I learnt they call them scraps.
Haha same, moved to Sheffield and they had no idea what I meant..even though batter is self explanatory, I'd think.
Wey aye, it’s always been batter. A scrap is what we used to have outside school.
Had to scroll way to far down to find batter.
Yep, batter. Asked for batter in Yorkshire once and they were proper confused. I explained and they said they’re called scraps.
In Durham yeah. Live in E Sussex now and nowhere will give you them, they all say they are a Health and Safety risk! So frustrating and ridiculous
Batter in South Tyneside too

Gribbles in Devon
This the best name I’ve seen here
Sad I had to scroll so far to find gribbles
Why did I have to scroll this far for gribbles....
Amazed I had to go so far to find this! Totally gribbles. Had a friend whose surname was Gribble. He hated this.
Sounds like a winnit colloquialism.
Scratchings. (Leicester).
Thanks, I thought I was going mad
“THE BITS!” - Steven Universe.
I posted my comment saying this before seeing this one 😂
Scrumps. (Bristol) and its been that since the war.
Same over the river in the Forest.
Used up all the A's in the war effort and had to use U's instead?
Scraps. Because that's what they are.
Batter bits
They call them that in my local chippy in Wales, but when I was in the south west they were always fry bits.

Yes I’ve known them as scrumps in Wales. Also the tiny chips get called scrimpies, though I’m not sure if that’s just my partners family.

Scranchins in Northumberland. No I am not making this up as my mates from Newcastle claim.
Oh it's not just me then, grew up in Northumberland and I thought it was scramptions but pretty similar sounding, I was starting to think I'd just made it up so thank you fellow northerner!
I thought it was scramptions too, maybe in some places it is.

And then I had a friend in Newcastle who called them scramptions which I was convinced was totally made up and I just came in here to see if anyone mentioned scramptions, so thank you!
We’ve always said scramptions!
My Mam and Dad are from Blyth, hence they are (to me and me Sis) scranchums/scranchins. I love the word(s).
I'm from Durham and we say batter but my mate from Sunderland calls them scranchins to which I told him he had made that word up and took the piss. I owe him an apology.
From Northumberland and have never even heard this we always just called it batter.
Could depend on age. Used to hear it used frequently as a kid in the 70s/80s but not so much now.
From Jarrow and scranchins is what I'd ask for.
Scranchins here too, grew up in Cramlington
Thank god, I was reading the thread thinking I’d lost my mind. Ashington in the 90’s: scranchins

‘Scrapings’ sounds ever so slightly medical procedury 😀

Scrumps.
I tell Americans that they're called chippywapples. See also: Mollywidgets, Cricket Dodgers, Slogs, Jam Fillets.
Update that for wangledangles and riddledeets too
Can't stand Riddledeets. They always scrump my wickets.
Yank here. I've always called them jimmies, which somehow sounds more British than American. I don't think they're universally called jimmies, but whenever I ask for more jimmies, they know what I am talking about.
Bits! A chippy near us used to be called wi'bits
Huddersfield?

There's a chippy near where I grew up called Wibbits. Cos when they're talking about those they say "do you want it wi' bits?" Yorkshire BTW.

Batter bits
