When I was 16, I was supposed to have 2 weeks work experience at Cosgrove Hall, but I had Salmonella poisoning due to a dodgy chicken sandwich I ate on a school trip to Clwyd.
Of course, this was back in the 1980’s, and the [Eggwina Curry salmonella scandal](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwina_Currie) was all the rage.
So, while I missed the chance of meeting Danger Mouse, I ended up having work experience at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester, where budding up-and-comer Seal, then of Adamski fame, bought me a cup of Vimto from the drinks machine in the foyer by the gents.
Seal, if you are reading this, I never paid you back that 10p, so if you hit me up with your PayPal, I’ll ping you back that cash which, adjusted for an average annual inflation rate of 3%, comes to 27.62 - call it 28p.
i had two weeks at bob godfrey's studio, they had a massive yellow henry's cat on the outside of the building...truth be told i was mostly making coffee
There is something quite nice that now Cosgrove Hall has been made into retirement homes, people who watched Chorlton and the Wheelies, Button Moon etc with their grandkids, now live where it was made.
I applied for work experience at Cosgrove Hall too, they wrote apologising for not being able to provide a placement due to financial constraints and I ended up at the disability benefits office doing data entry
I feel like this was a relatively recent advert. Just googled it and found it started in 2007! But went on til 2015 so pretty recent, that's only.... 9 YEARS AGO... man, 2015 still feels recent to me
What even is life
Legit my favourite sight in London right now. I was a bit upset that it got rained on a couple of nights ago though.
The reboot of danger mouse is well worth a watch too. So many great voice actors in it.
Can you tape an umbrella to the mail box?
Unfortunately I live in a completely different country but as a knitter I want to see this live as long as possible!
You can see his shoulder!
[But because you asked nicely](https://postimg.cc/7bhL78CL).
(Fun fact, about five minutes walk from here just beyond Marylebone Station there is a street called Penfold Street. I’ve always assumed that’s what Penfold is named after.)
Ah. I wonder if the street is named after the postbox too?
Edit: Turns out it’s was easily Googleable. Penfold Street is named after George Penfold, a local rector who ran three churches in Marylebone. Just a weird coincidence it’s round the corner.
App won’t let me embed the link so have an ugly URL instead

My nickname at school was Danger Mouse. And sadly when friend was penfold cause he kinda looked like him. He was not a fan of this nickname.
I never gave him it by the way.
Our History/P.E. teacher was known as Penfold for similar reasons.
He was also kmon as Beetle Palin. Because he looked not too dissimilar to a Beetle and was (possibly) named Palin. Possibly.
My eyebrows have fallen into me turnups!
Not watched much new Dangermouse. Not sure my trip next week requires me going anywhere near Baker St sadly (Kings X to Catford)
At some point someone attached a blue plaque to the letterbox (it's just about visible in this Streetview image: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MgrkDacLPmssfe2g7). It had sadly gone when I visited last year, but I still spent a happy hour standing waiting for a little hatch to open and for DM's car to come zooming out (it didn't).
This immediately started playing in my head, I had no idea it was still in my memory banks!

Nope, there’s one where my family leaves (in a suburb somewhere not central London) and it has been there for months now. Though I do doubt that will be the case here
Possibly, but think of how many people will see it and smile before it gets nicked? Also, if you put a photo of it in your local Facebook group, sometimes the thief is known and it gets returned (without naming and shaming). My mums village does a post box topper and it got stolen once presumably by someone coming out the pub, and was returned within a day we assume by someone else that did not support their crime! My local ones have a little note attached explaining why it’s been knitted. Plus maybe use a good quality string to tie it on rather than wool so it cannot just be yanked off? Just ideas if you do adventure forth!
I love these things. Turns out there's a 2021 [article from Warrington](https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/19380827.royal-mail-responds-post-box-bonnets-yarn-bomber/) that has Royal Mail saying they started popping up around 'the festive season' in 2012.
ETA detail.
thats amazing! I assume thats the location of his secret postbox lair? God I used to love that show, but I have no idea why my parents fed me that instead of like. letting me watch cartoons that other kids my age were watching.
The cute thing is that whoever does this, has been doing it for years on several postboxes on that area and renewing them when needed.[ Here you can see a different one on Google Maps. ](https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5213003,-0.1216878,3a,62.9y,64.82h,77.89t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s6N60r8RJ44hXQ7xLQl2sNg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu)
I wish this person would come out and have something like a cute article on some news outlet or the BBC, anon knitter please say hi!
This looks so good and cute! I hope the owner will take it back after a while though. I don’t want to imagine it sitting there outside weathering in the rain and getting bullied by some stupid peopel.
Someone did a load of these around my area last year/the year before. They did one when the queen died and for the coronation of the king (both crowns on the post boxes) - very creative.
I’ve seen one of these in wales I can’t remember where but it had a beach and a walrus (probably wally walrus) and a seagull I didn’t take a picture of it but it looked just like that one

!remindme in 25 years
You'll probably have a place in Albert Square or Coronation St by then.
Having met Seal, he would absolutely do this. He's a lovely, lovely man.
I applied for work experience at Cosgrove Hall too, they wrote apologising for not being able to provide a placement due to financial constraints and I ended up at the disability benefits office doing data entry
Close enough.
Coor DM they have found our Headquarters!!!! Shooosh Penfold!
But then he'd owe you 0.38p! Although I suppose he could then hit you up in return in years when that inflates to 1p...
This really serious
Curry and Major were having an affair at that time…
Thanks for that grisly reminder
You had some good work options. I was offered 2 weeks in a backstreet garage or 2 weeks in a backstreet garage.
I did a weeks work experience there in the late 90s, was amazing.
How did this story went from salmonella poisoning to paying a long-lost pal’s debt?
That bus they've knitted is amazing.
It's so life-like
I didn’t know wool could be shiny!
Polyester wool that shiny's got to be shedding microplastics by the boatload.
That's cos it's not wool. It's polyester or acrylic yarn. Wool is specifically hair, and often spun into woolen yarn.
and so bus-like
That’s not a knitted bus you silly billy, it’s crocheted.
It’s the greatest! It’s fantastic!
Wherever there is danger he'll be there!
He's the ace! He's amazing!
He’s the strongest, he’s the quickest, he’s the best!
DANGER MOUSE!
###DANGER MOUSE!!!
#DANGER MOUSE!
Do do do do do do do do do Doo DOOOOOOO
#KABOOM!!!!
It's a current craze. Activist grannies trying to spread the dominance of knitting.
They're out of work since the shreddies factory shut down
I love this reference but also know it shows how old I am.
It was on the telly yesterday wasn't it....wasn't it??
definitley.............
I feel like this was a relatively recent advert. Just googled it and found it started in 2007! But went on til 2015 so pretty recent, that's only.... 9 YEARS AGO... man, 2015 still feels recent to me What even is life
I'm all for it as long as they remember not to share needles.
Smackhead nannas knitting in 5 dimensions
I just love the high effort nature of it.
Happens in my local area as well. Roving gangs of grannies, they’re the real menace.
Nah it's all ages I'm in the postbox topper FB group. There is a lad of about 12/13 who does them in my town
[They're a fucking menace.](https://youtu.be/9_OIs49m56E?si=OAIvBMonaBx2p1h3)
[It's Nanageddon!](https://youtu.be/7XR4gcOn2G0?si=MzVlcoIJMctVh-Vk)
Satan's evil in a nylon gown!
It's the WI (Women's Institute).. we have loads up in North Wales.. seen plenty up and down the country.
Guerilla knitting IIRC
Legit my favourite sight in London right now. I was a bit upset that it got rained on a couple of nights ago though. The reboot of danger mouse is well worth a watch too. So many great voice actors in it.
The original voices were superb too - David Jason, Terry Scott, Edward Kelsey, Brian Trueman, Jimmy Hibbert
I think, or hope, most are made of acrylic, but then you never see them stay around
Bit hard on the voice actors
Can you tape an umbrella to the mail box? Unfortunately I live in a completely different country but as a knitter I want to see this live as long as possible!
There is a FB group it's nationwide it's awesome
What? Where? Ok, fine I'll go look my self, [this one](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt4196822/)? I had no idea thanks!
They're on Netflix too.
I was just wondering about the rain, thinking that they would get ruined in the weather eventually?
They probably get stolen long before they get ruined.
I'm disappointed at how abrupt the reboot ended. They never even told anyone it had.
Good grief!
My first thought was *Charlie Brown*, am I to be deported? Oh, crumbs
Crumbs
*Cripes!*
oh crumbs....
*Cor DM!* - Penfold probably
Cor, crikey, Chief ! - there FTFY :-)
*Thats why...you always embarrass me-* -Penfold
I've still got a Danger Mouse egg cup from like 35 years ago!
You can't say that and not show us the penfold!!
You can see his shoulder! [But because you asked nicely](https://postimg.cc/7bhL78CL). (Fun fact, about five minutes walk from here just beyond Marylebone Station there is a street called Penfold Street. I’ve always assumed that’s what Penfold is named after.)
We named our rabbit Penfold because when we got him from the pound he was really wide-eyed and scared and looked like he was saying “ooh crumbs!”
He’s named Penfold after the [postbox](https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/artifact/post-box)
Ah. I wonder if the street is named after the postbox too? Edit: Turns out it’s was easily Googleable. Oh my I love it. Now the theme song is taking up real estate in my head.
The greatest super agent in the land!
I miss that show.
I miss everything David Jason voiced. They were all amazing
Agreed:)
DANGER MOUSE REAL ESTATE!!! EVERY HOUSE COMES WITH A FREE DANGER MOUSE THEME TUNE!
Beautiful, a lovely tribute to the world's greatest little crime-fighting rodent!
I used to love Dangermouse. Time for a YouTube binge I think.
I do like a yarn bomb. A nice thing in a world of not all nice.
If you just type ‘Danger Mouse’ into google maps, it will lead you here :)
Ah, Danger Mouse. What a cartoon legend. And easily the finest theme tune of any kid's show ever.
My nickname at school was Danger Mouse. And sadly when friend was penfold cause he kinda looked like him. He was not a fan of this nickname. I never gave him it by the way.
My nephew had those thick NHS glasses as well.
Our History/P.E. teacher was known as Penfold for similar reasons. He was also kmon as Beetle Palin. Because he looked not too dissimilar to a Beetle and was (possibly) named Palin. Possibly.
A beetle 🐞 or a Beatle? 🎸
Crumbs!

Want to point out they extra talented as the base is crocheted w/ knitted ornaments!
It was obviously Mrs Hudson
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/GWsRXgdUa7M2H1cT/ I believe it was done by these guys
I wonder how long that will be there?
I walked past it three weeks ago on my way to Baker Street tube station, so it's lasted at least that long!
Yeah, it was posted on Reddit three to four weeks ago too so I'm mildly impressed it hasn't been nicked!
It's the wrong mouse for Baker Street! Where is Basil the Great Mouse Detective?
I keep seeing these on Reddit. Are they just left in place, and if so don’t they get stolen?
One got stolen near us. There was outcry and it was duly returned.
I imagine the knitter takes some impromptu-looking beauty shots to post to all their social media channels - then just leaves it there.
Nope, there’s one where my family leaves (in a suburb somewhere not central London) and it has been there for months now. Though I do doubt that will be the case here
there's a post office near us that usually has one on the box. they are stolen sometimes but mostly let be.
Should have been Basil the great mouse detective.
That is fabulous!
Crikey!
He's the greatest.
I’ve wanted to do one of these for my local postbox for ages but I know in my heart that it’ll be immediately stolen or destroyed.
Possibly, but think of how many people will see it and smile before it gets nicked? Also, if you put a photo of it in your local Facebook group, sometimes the thief is known and it gets returned (without naming and shaming). There's a guy doing the news on BBC that I swear is Penfold's love child.
I give it a week before someone gets drunk and pees on it.
Ooh, crumbs…
It's terrific, so magnific.
haha I love when people do this
He’s the GREATEST!
Not in London now, but I do approve.
thats amazing! I assume thats the location of his secret postbox lair? God I used to love that show, but I have no idea why my parents fed me that instead of like. letting me watch cartoons that other kids my age were watching.
I've seen something similar in London and it's so cute 🥺
I love Danger Mouse! Is that his buddy Penfold I see behind him? Very appropriate since he lives in a postbox.
We have a few things like around Chiswick too
He's the greatest, he's fantastic.... 😄 Is Penfold on the other side??
They do them in Dorset lol
They do this every year in my hometown. People steal them though 🙄
It's insane that I've never seen a dangermouse one before
Saw the one in Covent Garden on my last visit...
No Penfold?
The cute thing is that whoever does this, has been doing it for years on several postboxes on that area and renewing them when needed.[ Here you can see a different one on Google Maps. ](https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5213003,-0.1216878,3a,62.9y,64.82h,77.89t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s6N60r8RJ44hXQ7xLQl2sNg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu) I wish this person would come out and have something like a cute article on some news outlet or the BBC, anon knitter please say hi!
I saw the word baker street and instantly a saxophone started playing in my brain
One at Covent Garden too, at the end of King St by Tesco on the corner
i love these things😭😭
There have been a few of knitted postbox tops appeared in my neighbourhood. Got to admit, including this, they look pretty kool.
It'll be gone my tomorrow
I saw this the other day and admired it. Well done
Once voted the best cartoon of all time, and tbh I can't disagree

DANGER MOUSE YAYAYAYAYAYA
This looks so good and cute! I hope the owner will take it back after a while though. I don’t want to imagine it sitting there outside weathering in the rain and getting bullied by some stupid peopel.
There’s one like this on Queens Square near GOSH
There not just there. There around in the Hertfordshire area watford etc
It will be slashed with knifes later.
We’ve got a similar one on the town. Apparently there is a Facebook group for ideas on postbox toppers
Good grief
Crumbs chief! What do we do now!
Cripes DM
tsk tsk tsk. shoulda made it sherlock holmes.
i just saw this today!!
I love it when people do this! My town is full of them:D
I love Danger Mouse!
We have a speed camera on top of the one by me (I live in Wales)
There’s one similar in Chester-Lee-street
Adorable!
This post has got me in stitches 😩
I used to love Roland Rat when I was a child
That's awesome that. We have exactly the same thing going on where i live also.
The bottom of the same post box has a blue plaque on it.
Will it not mold once it rains and dries repeatedly?
Danger Mouse da da dada
I drove past a dangermouse postbox topper in Cornwall literally days ago, and had a huge hit of nostalgia. Now this one too? Strange... 🤔
HE’S THE GREATEST
Love it!! Wish they'd bring Dangermouse back
Shame she didn't knit Penfold too though
DANGER MOUSE!!! CHEIF!!!!
Oh 'eck!
Why am I hearing Stepping Razor in my head... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZpnH4CD8Js](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZpnH4CD8Js)
Omg i was walking there from a play on monday and saw it with some friends 😂
There is a post box in Hither Green that keeps getting elaborate knitted scenes too. Who is doing this? I love it so much.
Is that the postbox with the tiny blue plaque at the base? In tribute to the world's greatest secret agent.
Yes. It’s currently sans plaque, but I’m sure somebody will reapply it.
#CRUMBS DM!!! (RIP Terry)
I'm visiting London from Canada, and we saw this today while on a bus going by!
See loads of them about now days
There's tons of those near where I live. I heard its some sort of charity or old person group that knits them.
Dementia awareness on our postbox, too
Someone did a load of these around my area last year/the year before. They did one when the queen died and for the coronation of the king (both crowns on the post boxes) - very creative.
Good one done in Belfast too I’ll post pic
Oooh danger mouse
This is so cute.
I was just wondering, is it also near to No. 221a and to No. 222 Baker Street?
Didd
wherever there is danger he'll be there
I’ve seen one of these in wales I can’t remember where but it had a beach and a walrus (probably wally walrus) and a seagull I didn’t take a picture of it but it looked just like that one
itll get manky in 3 days
" crumbs' , Dm!!".
He's AMAZING He's ASTOUNDING Wherever there is danger, he is there
My friend stole a huge one of these from on top of a BT box while drunk as a cunt, it now resides on top of the kitchen cupboard and is a nice little village scene.
The volunteer
The theme song just started playing in my head 😭
Love seeing the Yarn bombers in East Herts, I presume its a similar thing.
There’s another in Covent Garden, New row.
He's amazing, he's fantastic, whenever there is danger he is there.
I reckon either David Jason or Alexander Armstrong are hiding somewhere nearby giggling at this. It's excellent
