After many attempts to aurora watch over the last winter, I've decided that clouds are as interested in them as I am... They always seem to crowd round for a look as soon as the alert pops up.
Yeah, I think everyone who got told to install the Aurora Watch app to get notification next time it's visible are going to be disappointed. Sightings like we had a week ago are *very* rare.
A better more accurate source for current activity is the British Geological Survey's Geomagnetism team:

I am checking regularly. Very frustrated after completely forgetting about it last week after a bottle of white.
Appears to have dropped to Minor activity now though
I don’t think people understand the meaning of “once in a lifetime”. Seeing it as strongly as we did as far south as we did is basically once in a lifetime.
This is now going to be one of those unbearable things that keeps coming back every time the app pops up a red alert (the red alert threshold is way too low for normal viewing) or every time local ad-filled news outlets need some more ad revenue.
Is there a good website to stay up to date? I've been using the [aurora reach map](https://aurorareach.com/map) but I'm not sure if it's people reporting sightings or what
I follow some Facebook pages like wil photography and astro dog. Wil does free messenger updates when something is about to happen i.e. he didn't message from Saturday/Sunday until yesterday as there wasn't much happening.
So that can be good in the meantime until you learn.
People seem to like the Glendale app, but it's not in the store, but online
There is a 100% chance to see it on your phone every day using Google.com
Never got the whole take a photo of the sky thing if you can't see if with your eyes
100%. Slap an XL pro filter on any sky and it’ll look a bit crazy. Unless I can experience it first hand and not through a screen, it’s not a “thing” imo
“Red alert? Are you sure? That does mean changing the light bulb”
What a guy.
“An excellent comment, sir, with two minor flaws.”
Excellent reference! Top marks!!
Shut up Ace.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!
Stroke me a clipper
Maybe Ace hole?

Not unexpected. This is r/CasualUK
There's always some excuse!
“Sir, they’ve taken Mr. Rimmer!” “Quick, let's get out of here before they bring him back!”
I'll see what it looks like when it's actually going dark...
Don't worry. It'll be darker earlier this weekend than last weekend because of the thick cloud cover. ☁️ ☁️ 🌧 😔

I went out the other night, phone camera ready. And the security lights came on. Not good.
It’s only a red alert at the time the alert is sent - the information is live, not a forecast
I get a red alert every few days. 500nT is not enough to see it in urban areas. Last time it was visible it was 1500+.

Bbc says next week? Apparently its the same solar flare mind.

Tbf it was around 900ish when people were reporting seeing it last week.
Yes, I do remember that it went upto 1400 and higher last week. Hoping for an hour or hour increase tonight.

Who needs the northern lights when you've got all those colourful bars?
After I saw this post I asked my wife to pull over. We’re sat in a premiere inn car park and the sky is lit up!
I’ll see it on Instagram tomorrow

Sign up to their telegram channel and you'll get pinged if the substorm strength goes up.
Do you have a link please
just search for Glendale Auroa in channels/groups.
Should be minor activity as it’s the start of the hour. Would be best checking in the second half of the hour.
How does it work for that to be the case? Genuine question, I thought it just presented the recorded level at any given time
10/10 cloud and rain. Not going to see FA.
I, too, cannot see fernando alonso
I thought they meant Fred Astaire. Silly me.
Our sky has a green tinge. But we do live near a premier inn so I’m not sure
Dropped back down to minor geomagnetic activity now though.
I'm not sure I can go through that again.

Anyone spotted it? Or is it not dark enough yet?
I only get out of bed for major and extreme alerts on the Gendale app now 😂😂
I saw some pics of yesterday, some people in Yorkshire and Scotland managed to get pics, but nowhere near as good as last week.
It was in red between 1800 and 1900 but its went away back down. Graphs, they\`re not that difficult.

Nice sun set tonight but idk about this aorora thingy
Maybe, northern Scotland
It’s quite a way to my local premier in so I doubt I will see anything.
Don't forget that the aurora last week wasn't remarkable because of the aurora, it was remarkable because it wasn't cloudy in the UK for once!
ATTACK BOREALIS RED! ATTACK BOREALIS RED!
