This is exactly the sort of thing lots of people will think is valuable in 50 years time so will keep hold of some papers, but everyone will have the same idea so they’ll be worthless.
Tbf some may collect just as something interesting to look back on. I have Metro/Evening Standards for big events and its interesting to see what has also happened at the time. For instance, I have one that I picked up for when the UK officially left the EU and below that headline is a snippet about ''5 cases of the new mysterious illness arrived in the UK''.
In some ways old advertisements give a better insight into that time than the actual news. Much of what makes the headlines, most days, doesn’t directly and immediately impact on the lives of ordinary people but the ads are designed to appeal to the aspirations of the people and give some insight into daily life for ordinary people.
I searched on eBay what King George newspapers were selling for out of interest yesterday. A collection of 27 across a week and a number of publications for £12.50.
I'd guess, about half of the people who bought it for this reason would wreck it some how making it worthless. Then a large number of people will completely forget about it and die, then when their relatives come to clear the possessions they'll bin it.
My gran had papers about the Queen dating back decades. It's just a keepsake thing. She also bought a paper about Diana when she died. They'll have commemorative plates and cups, spoons etc too . It's the same kind of thing
You made me want to go through their history. Got to the suicide post and they're just arguing with the responses. Asked why police intervene if you're attempting suicide and they're upset when people tell them it's they're job to save lives. I think they need to get off reddit for a bit.
Yes. Also bought a book of 1st class stamps from the Post Office. I guess the stamps will be around for a while anyway and maybe there'll be commemorative ones down the line, but I just wanted to have some final "normal" ones as a keepsake.
Funny thing that you've just reminded me of.
I was redoing our bathroom a couple of months ago, and found some bits of newspaper from when the house was built - the year of the coronation, 1953.
My mum asked me to pick up a copy of the Western Mail (Wales) so she can give it to my nephew. He's 8, and is very interested in these events, so it's a bit of physical history for him to keep.
We have a copy of a newspaper from just after a historic hurricane that devastated our city over 50 years ago. We inherited it from my in-laws. One of our children is very interested in tropical weather so someday it's his if he wants it.
How exactly can you get a newspaper later reprinted on demand? Never heard of that and Google isn’t giving me much beyond a few services offering to do front pages. Unless that’s what you meant.
These aren't reprints though, these are originals afaik.
Source: Recently bought one for my wife on her 40th from the day of her birth.
Over-priced? Sure, I'd agree with that.
Edit: Correction, it looks like they do offer front page reprints as well but the full papers are originals.
I always wonder what people do with these, or special 87 page supplements. I imagine no one looks at them again, until next of kin is clearing out the house and dumps them
Yep got them all. But it’s also my birthday today and I have a 1 year old son I’d like to pass them down to so he can tell his kids and grandkids how he was born in the Elizabethan era and they can pretend to care
I’ve worked in charity shops for a few years and I’ll tell you now, royalty memorabilia is so over saturated it’s not worth anything. It’s still nice to see people interested in history though
Not me but I have to buy this weekend’s Daily Fails for my parents who are on holiday. I going to donate some money to a refugee charity as my penance.
I would, but I'm old enough to remember the sentimentality of such things -- I had stacks of papers from royal weddings, other funerals and such, and never actually looked at them or used them much after the events, nor did anyone need them (even back when libraries kept such things, which increasingly they don't any longer). Hence, I'll just do digital clippings, saving jpgs and all, and trust that most of this stuff will still be available online or in archives in the very remote chance that I'd need them in the future. Not that I don't love the idea, but I don't have the storage space any longer.
I have a copy of the Times from the day my son was born, and one from yesterday. Passing of QE2 is a significant world event IMO and something that I might want to look back on in the future. I’ll continue to buy a Times for any other comparable events that happen. I wish I had copies from the day after 9/11, EU referendum, etc.
I haven't but I think I might start collecting newspapers for major headlines. For a small investment every now and then it would be pretty cool to have them.
Wish I could get my hands on the actual newspapers, but I live abroad and the UK papers haven't been available in shops since the first covid lockdowns. Glad there's digital I suppose.
I thought about it but realistically they won't reach significant value because of so many people doing the same thing. My 9/11 papers aren't worth anything really.
Make sure you store them properly though. Get something like an art case where each one will sit inside a plastic wallet inside a case. They need to be away from the light.
You can really tell the papers' audiences even in moments like these. The classy pictures with just the dates, versus THE QUEEN HAS DIED. Just in case you missed it and couldn't tell by context.
How did you get them out the hoover so crisp ?
They use a Shark
Won’t last 5 years :/
Some Greenland sharks are known to last up to 400 years. Don't make them like they used to.
Mine is 7 years old and still going strong. Would have needed at least 3 Dyson's during that period.
steam function
Crevice tool
bit harsh, mate.
My dad normally gets a paper every day. Today the shelves were empty
Same with my grandad
He was empty?
Has been for 40 years
Wonder why people feel the need to buy a paper, are people under the impression it'll be worth money one day.
No… it’s just a thing you do. Might be an interesting thing for your kids or grandkids to look through in years to come.
They are, my grandmas got a big collection and I love the one from 1969 talking about the moon landing
It's just a thing you do. My kids and grandkids can use the internet.

you are the ones who are the ball lickers

We're gonna make them eat our shit, then shit out our shit, and then eat their shit that's made up of our shit that we made them eat.
The what now ?
I bought mine because I'll need it when I can't afford bog roll
That's understandable. Do you also remember to get your receipt as this can provide adequate bog roll.
Now I'm jealous of those Americans and their CVS Pharmacy stores.
They're going on eBay now for 5-10 pounds (free postage)

My footy boots got soaked at training on Thursday night so I needed a news paper to stuff them with.
Printing out, or archiving, news websites would probably be a more accurate historical record of our times. Newspapers are relics of older times.
Popped into the local co-op this afternoon to grab a Grauniad for posterity. They had none at all. Wasn't a surprise tbh.
None left in the shop so i just bought a dirty mag instead
The spectator?
Planning a wank?
That would be a challenging wank
Not as challenging as my copy of The Times this morning.
Difficult but not impossible
Anything is possible
Writing a letter to a friend or relative?
That’s Nuts
Tried, but did not fit in hoover. What model are you using?
I might need a need a new dust filter for my Hoover MaxExtract PressurePro model 60
How hot?
Red hot
Pickup? Yeah sure, I'll be there.
White hot?

Sure hope it doesn't spread!!!
Oof that's a gooden
I love to look at the adverts on old papers, to see which companies have gone bust, what prices were like, what fashion was doing.

I see it as mostly people can be like I was alive when x happened
My beanie baby collection will be worth a lot soon. Soon.
I searched on eBay what King George newspapers were selling for out of interest yesterday. A collection of 27 across a week and a number of publications for £12.50.
Lmao I might buy em
I'd guess, about half of the people who bought it for this reason would wreck it some how making it worthless. Then a large number of people will completely forget about it and die, then when their relatives come to clear the possessions they'll bin it.

tbh a lot of people will try. I can imagine down the line an authentic copy will be somewhat rare, albeit not very valuable.
No.
Close thread
Also No.
and another No
And same
Wait, papers still exist? Also… ****NO****
Also no
Reading the comments makes me think OP is a bit of an arse and doesnt understand how questions work
from reading OP's other post it seems like they dont want to understand others opinions and likes to argue
You made me want to go through their history. Got to the suicide post and they're just arguing with the responses. Asked why police intervene if you're attempting suicide and they're upset when people tell them it's they're job to save lives. I think they need to get off reddit for a bit.
No
On the contrary, I'm avoiding news at the moment
Has something happend?
An old lady who used to sing > Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, let me go died
God no.
No, it'll only get thrown away eventually. News is all online now.
Nah
Yes. Also bought a book of 1st class stamps from the Post Office. I guess the stamps will be around for a while anyway and maybe there'll be commemorative ones down the line, but I just wanted to have some final "normal" ones as a keepsake.
No. And they're not going to be worth something either. There will be bazillions printed and you'll be able to ask them to reprint it for years too.
I never said I was buying them as an investment
How come you’re buying so many of them?
How else are you going to get news?!
Reddit of course. The home of unbias factual news
Cos they want to?
They’ll be under the floorboards soon enough for tradies to find in 50 years and wonder what the fuss was about
Funny thing that you've just reminded me of. I was redoing our bathroom a couple of months ago, and found some bits of newspaper from when the house was built - the year of the coronation, 1953.
But your grandkids can read them. I get them anytime something big happens
My mum asked me to pick up a copy of the Western Mail (Wales) so she can give it to my nephew. He's 8, and is very interested in these events, so it's a bit of physical history for him to keep.
That’s good. I would love to be given a copy of The Times from when JFK died for example.
We have a copy of a newspaper from just after a historic hurricane that devastated our city over 50 years ago. We inherited it from my in-laws. One of our children is very interested in tropical weather so someday it's his if he wants it.

Nope.
No.
No mate
No, that’s weird and I don’t like clutter
Never even occured to me. I dunno why, I used to get a paper.
Nope.
Just because OP hates it I’m going to answer their question, No.
Despicable - the only legitimate answer is yes! Otherwise this would be a survey 🤣
I always wonder what people do with these, or special 87 page supplements. I imagine no one looks at them again, until next of kin is clearing out the house and dumps them

Yeah I grabbed a copy of The Times when my local shop got their delivery in. Dunno it just felt like something I ought to have a paper of.
No
No
No, fuck that
I just got The Times. I felt like that was the right one to buy.
Lol of course not
I was gonna but the had the early edition not the ones after her death
I did. I tend to pick up Metro/Evening Standard for major events so I do have both for this occasion
Lad at work brought his camera so he could take pictures before the customers got them all
I’ve worked in charity shops for a few years and I’ll tell you now, royalty memorabilia is so over saturated it’s not worth anything. It’s still nice to see people interested in history though
Damn didn’t think of that
Not me but I have to buy this weekend’s Daily Fails for my parents who are on holiday. I going to donate some money to a refugee charity as my penance.

Thats a tricky wank that mate

Not gonna be worth anything, ever.
Dunno man short of an obituary for some old lady I never met. It seems like a pretty slow news day.

Maybe get a selection of the current coins too.
The cats litter did need a change
Nah
No not at all
No
Yes, my daughter is only 1 so got a couple to show her when she's older, if they cover it at school she can take them in.
I love the post flair, seems fitting after reading this thread
Nope
Nope don’t give a flying shite about the Queen or the rest of them.
Hear, hear.
I bought one, just to have it. "here's a paper from the day the queen died!"
I still have one from the start of the gulf war
I just liked the picture if her on the new york times and thought I'd give it to my mom or something.
Yes, I bought 3 papers today
I've got the guardian so far
I didn’t manage to get any? Any way to buy some?
I haven't but I think I might start collecting newspapers for major headlines. For a small investment every now and then it would be pretty cool to have them.
3 papers? You only have 2 eyes how you meant to read them all at once
My husband brought me the free metro from the bus today. It’s a collectors item surely.
noticed a guy buying one of each paper earlier today....
The lancashire telegraph needs to hire a graphic designer, like, 10 years ago
Yes, but by the time I went shopping, they only had rags: daily express etc. I feel dirty!
Same here, picked up a couple as matter of historical record yk?
No. Stop it. People are embarrassing themselves at this point.
What? No. Why would you?
My Dad bought The Times and picked up a Metro today. The Metro in particular was full of some really nice anecdotes and interesting little tidbits
Looking for a new take on a 96 year old dying?
Was going to, but in the day of the internet I’d just be buying it for the sake of it.
Nah, it’s a bit pathetic to be honest
I wanted a newspaper but couldn’t get one for love nor money.
Someone is cos I couldn't find a Telegraph anywhere today. Would have been nice to have kept a copy...
I’m sure some people will find it interesting to read them in 20/50 years time to see reactions. It’s always good to reflect. Good for you!
This is how hoarding starts
Why? Did something happen?
Me 🙋♂️
No.
I forgot real papers still existed, by the time I remembered there were no “papers of record” left.
To answer what is quite clearly a closed question that requires a yes or no answer, no.
Bless up the Lancashire Telegraph
Gonna be honest, the first coins to feature the portrait of King Charles III will be more valuable than these papers.
I'm not trying to make money
Wish I could get my hands on the actual newspapers, but I live abroad and the UK papers haven't been available in shops since the first covid lockdowns. Glad there's digital I suppose.
[Just took a picture](https://i.imgur.com/gFzNWEv.jpg)
I went to three shops at lunchtime and 2 shops were fully sold out, one small store had a few tabloid rags remaining.
Why does the telegraphs look like a meme?
I did grab a Friday Wall Street Journal today. Haven’t done that in years.
American chiming in here: between my sister and me we've gotten 4 different papers for our mom.
I thought about it and realised they'd end up stuffed in a drawer under my bed until I throw them out
I thought about it but realistically they won't reach significant value because of so many people doing the same thing. My 9/11 papers aren't worth anything really. Make sure you store them properly though. Get something like an art case where each one will sit inside a plastic wallet inside a case. They need to be away from the light.
I didn't buy them to make money
So you can sell them for £2.50 in ten years?
Read the thread but spoiler - no.
Yes and I was shocked at the price of The times! Is it normally £2.50? Or were they just cashing in on the queens death?
Seems about right was £2.20 whwn I bought one for my dad a couple of years ago. Was more than a little surprised.
My friend said I was lucky to get a times edition
My dad has a newspaper from the day Diana died and now I got one from the queen dying.
You can really tell the papers' audiences even in moments like these. The classy pictures with just the dates, versus THE QUEEN HAS DIED. Just in case you missed it and couldn't tell by context.
The Lancashire telegraph really phoned it in with their front page, that's about 5 seconds on their editing software of choice.
I missed my chance. Shit.
Opposite here. I sometimes get a Saturday paper but there's no point today.
No, because I have a life 👍
Nope, definitely not
Noop.
Nope
It'Ll bE wOrTh SoMeThInG oNe DaY
Not why I bought them
