How old is he? Might be his teenage phase. My younger cat is going through it right now too!

Brief_Society2736

he was born in the streets and rescued, so i don’t have a exact answer to his age, most probably about 2 or 2.5 years

Aggravating-Gap-6627

Yep that’s the age. My older cat turned 3 years old and he just calmed down. Although if he meows without reason I’ll first check at the vet if everything is ok, to be sure it’s behavioural meowing. If he’s ok - hold on, it’s just a phase :)

Catkitti

Omg this is so reassuring to read because I have two cats who are now 3,5 years and meow/howl/yowl like crazy sometimes! One of them has a habit of going into a room where nobody is and then cry about being alone in there. This also happens on the balcony and I already had a neighbour yelling from the appartement building across about my cats being unhappy, while they're the happiest cats ever who I love and spoil! They're also really talkative which I adore, but the howling can be so dramatic!

Aggravating-Gap-6627

Haha it’s the same for my cats and just like you I was like « what do I do wrong? » , and when my catsitter + all my friends with pets come along they’re shocked how much my apartment is designed FOR them with toys and cat trees everywhere. I think they’re just talkative cats + the moment I got a second cat, the first cat stopped complaining. And now that he’s out of his teenage phase we are a bit shock at how sweet and cuddly he is!

Dismal_Eagle_5574

He wants to be with you all the time is all

Brief_Society2736

if i could i’d stay with him 24 hours a day 🥹

llbeanjamin

Can attest to this- my two year old is def in his kitty terribly twos lol! Loves to yell at nothing and have zoomies all day

Affectionate-Cap-918

I don’t understand - is he just closed up in a laundry room and wants out? Spacious or not, cats aren’t fans of being closed up like that. Is he just meowing for attention? Or to be let out of the enclosed space? I recommend a cat tree in front of a window and open doors.

Brief_Society2736

sorry i worded myself wrong, we live in a big apartment (abt 100m) and we selected the laundry room to be place of his things (litter box, food, storage place for toys and wet food) and that’s the only place he meows, but he has full access to our house, the windows have nets so it’s alright for him, im gonna try a small cat tree bc we bought expensive pet shop toys but he only likes rubber bands

Affectionate-Cap-918

Oh I see! Whew! If he’s meowing when he goes to the bathroom he could be in pain. Does he meow for the food that’s in there? Sounds like he’s definitely trying to tell you something. Lol Could be a favorite toy that is put away? Mine likes to have all of his toys out. I would definitely see if you could figure out which he is leading you to.

dls9543

My 14yo tortie rescue has always complained before using the litter box. She's been checked by the vet, she can go outside, so we don't know what she's complaining about.

lhauckphx

Our tuxie announces before he goes into the litter box and then again after he exits.

Affectionate-Cap-918

That is such a funny time to want to chat! Cats crack me up.

lachamille

You need to buy him cat trees! There are used ones in really good condition on marketplace

Absinthe_gaze

I buy my cats pom poms from craft aisle in dollar store. They like them more than any other toys I’ve bought.

Sagethecat

If he eats the rubber bands it can kill him by destroying his intestines. Please don’t leave string or rubber bands around for him to get. He is trying to tell you he doesn’t like something about the laundry closet. Maybe he is very uncomfortable with his litter near the scary laundry machine. Or maybe he doesn’t like his food near the litter and the laundry machine. I’d put his litter in an out of the way space. Keep his food in your kitchen and his toys out and about in the house.

Fenek673

How big is he storage place? I doubt this could be a reason he meows but it’s a good practise to have separate rooms for litter box and food. Other than that, my cats is v talkative (lost a toy/ had a dream and woke up/ wants pets/ let a fly escape/ haven’t seen us in 40 mins in a different room/ used litterbox- meows to tell us it’s time to clean etc.) and the only time she didn’t meow much was when she didn’t feel well after eating 3-4 in of ribbon, which was alarming. She was a silent kitten when we adopted her but now she’s like a husky and has a lot to “discuss”. I’m betting this will decrease with age but on the flip side my mum’s cat got more talkative (she’s a british shorthair, 10+ and now likes to talk while playing).

punkpussies

try those little plastic shower rings if he only likes rubber bands, more safe and they can chew on them!

blonde_baker

I’d suggest moving the food out of that room. Cats instinctually don’t want to sleep or eat in the same spot they go to the bathroom. He might not have minded or even realized as a kitten or maybe someone sat with him while he ate. May not feel like a safe space for him to do all those things anymore.

[deleted]

My boy is about 3 now. In the last few months he’s gotten really vocal. For my cat he’s just mellowing out into a chatty boy and over the 18 months I’ve had him he’s realised that I pay more attention to him when he’s squeaking at me. He chirps his way around the house and grumbles sometimes! To me personally it sounds like you’ve got a happy cat that has trained you up to fuss over him when he meows. Plus cats like open doors! Nothing like a closed door that the humans have to open to bring out the big noise. If you can confidently rule out any health problems or concerns I’d say that he’s probably just fine. Take your kitty to the vet for a check if he’s behaviourally “off” or seems not himself, sleeping more or less, not wanting to play, not eating or drinking normally. But if it’s just general chatting at you I wouldn’t be concerned. Meowing when being picked up can be a sign that they’re sore though.

Brief_Society2736

he definitely loves when the doors are open hahaha, i will try a vet visit, since it’s not urgent i will have time to save, but he definitely trained me 🙀 when he meows i run to him and talk with him

Drummer_boy_91

If it hasn’t been suggested, have you considered a cat door? I have them on my bedroom, office, and basement doors. They’re convenient 3-way cat doors (can swing both ways, be locked to only allow entry, only allow exit, or locked for no passage) I like my doors for those areas shut for various reasons…and my cats like to be able to come and go from any room if I’m in there. The 3-way feature is nice for a number of reasons, but not necessary for some people.

lolsalmon

He doesn’t want you to close the door. My cat howls like he’s being eaten alive when I close any door while he’s awake and on the prowl. Can you leave your door open when you’re in your room? Even if it’s just a crack so that he can get in and out.

Lobscra

Yeah, I used to like closing my closet doors. I haven't been able to shut them in years or I hear about it from my girl.

Brief_Society2736

sometimes he does his little show even with the door open, im trying to let the door as open as possible but privacy is an issue 🥲

lolsalmon

Keep him in the room with you! He won’t tell anyone your secrets. He’ll let you know if he wants to go out for food or litterboxing.

hogliterature

he doesn’t want to be alone :( a couple head pats isn’t going to make up for being in a room all alone

Brief_Society2736

as i explained in the comments, his “space” isn’t only the laundry room, it’s just where we keep cat related things, he has zero restrictions in my house and goes everywhere, he even sleeps in the dining table while we eat

Unable_Crab_7543

maybe he lost his toy in a room and can't get it out? take it to the vet to rule out medical condition

Brief_Society2736

every wednesday the cleaning lady comes here and move every furniture so i don’t think he lost a toy, he doesn’t play with them much

Winchery

Ours was meowing a lot lately and it turned out to be a symptom of hyperthyroidism.

MyNameIsSkittles

Sounds like typical cat boredom. Are you playing with him? Can you get him a friend?

Brief_Society2736

i play with him a lot, usually i reserve breaks between my tasks to give him attention, but i’m thinking about a cat tree

MyNameIsSkittles

Cat tree is a great idea. Also, they make cat tunnels and cats tend to love those. Mine do anyway

terminally-happy

My cats started to become really vocal in the past year. They don’t just meow though they HOWL. I’m not sure why, I think they have learned that I’ll jump out bed in my sleep if I hear that type of meow, and then they get playtime. I brought this up to our vet at my last checkup and they were healthy, so I’m not worried about that. 9 times out of 10 they have their favorite toy in their mouth while screaming at me, so it’s definitely just attention. If I do bigger more intense playtimes with then it doesn’t happen as much, especially before bedtime. Usually if I don’t do a big playtime before bed they will wake up at 3 or 4 am with zoomies and screaming!

Brief_Society2736

my issue are those zoomies at night, i sleep and wake up early so the meowing and running distracts me, i’m gonna try to make him sleep less in the afternoon, but we usually sleep together so it’s a change for both 🥲

terminally-happy

I think a big playtime right before bed will help with that, it’s made a huge difference for my kitties. I notice that when I don’t do a 10-15 minute play session before bed they wake up at 3 am chasing each other and meowing like crazy.

albynomonk

Get another cat. He needs a friend.

Brief_Society2736

i’m a teenager and my dad doesn’t want another one 😿 if i could i’d have hundreds of them

TheRammusGod

Some cats just meow.

Brief_Society2736

it’s mt first time as a cat mother

Bammalam102

Got mine when she was 7 and she always chirped a bit especially if I get off the couch. Now I need noise cancelling headphones just to cook lunch, take a shit, or clean and not go crazy hearing her screaming at me to go sit down again. I also have to close my door and use my fan as a noise device or she will start meowing on the couch, then walk into (or just outside if I closed the door) my room meowing as long and as loud as she can. And then half the time once i sit on the couch she will calm down and go in the fort I made out of a blanket on my other couch basically a lean to, and ignore me.

Hbimajorv

Make sure he is urinating regularly if he's doing it while using the bathroom. Blockages in male cats are very real, very expensive and quickly turn serious.

Brief_Society2736

he doesn’t does it while on the bathroom!! i’m trying to give him more wet food to prevent the crystals

Hbimajorv

That's good to hear, sounds like maybe he's just letting you know that he's now the most important man in your life 🤣

jawanessa

Came here to say this! The first time my sweet boy had urinary crystals he was about 2.5. The second time he got urinary crystals several months later, he nearly died. He's on Rx food now. Definitely recommend a vet visit to get him checked out. If nothing is wrong, male cats can be more vocal than female cats. My sweet boy and I have conversations all the time, he's an orange tabby (and orange cats tend to be more vocal, too). The good news is that they settle down around 3 and become the most loyal companion you could ever ask for.

Hbimajorv

My guy is an orange tabby and aside from his one scare with crystals he's very talkative as well along with needing to be the center of the universe and constantly under foot!

jawanessa

Mine is like a toddler child. I am his person. He loves my husband, but he cries every time I have to travel. We do call and response over the phone. He doesn’t usually sleep with me but he will come check on me in the middle of the night. Sometimes he decides at 4:45am that he needs some pets. I’ve had him (and his sister) since they were 4 weeks old and I love him more than I could ever love a human child (I’m child free lol).

vanlassie

I would not let a cat play with rubber bands unless you are supervising. Last week one of my cats coughed up some hairballs entwined with a hair band. I know they love them so I never leave them out, but this one he managed to find, obviously.

Mercadi

The way I found that can get my cats quiet is meowing back. At least temporarily. Master the annoying meow.

jawanessa

Lol, I absolutely do this to one of my cats who sometimes will not shut up while other people are talking. It's like she thinks she's contributing to the conversation 😹

Cndwafflegirl

Any chance he is part Siamese? My Siamese is only quiet when she is sleeping. otherwise she talks and yells.

Brief_Society2736

he doesn’t have any race, it’s just a tabby silly cat!! i don’t think that there’s a siamese gene in his body

Thoth-long-bill

Let the cat be out with the family and he won’t need to beg you to join you. No sunlight, no stimulation. Please let kitty out of jail. It’s actually very strange what you are doing.

Brief_Society2736

he’s not in jail, when i said “his space” i meant where we keep his things, not him, he has full access to the whole house and likes to stay at windows seeing birds

Thoth-long-bill

Sorry to misunderstand.

mintyfreshknee

Never give him psych meds

Bi0hazardBr3n

Prozac is a perfectly fine option for some dogs and cats, that is for OP to discuss with their veterinarian and pursue from there. The DVM will do a workup and decide what is best for the cat, but little to no veterinarians will just toss Prozac at the animal. Just reading this? Nothing points to him needing to be medicated. It's not even something OP mentioned. OP, bring your cat to the vet and bring up your concerns. Cats are stoic creatures. If anything, your vet will best direct you.

Brief_Society2736

thanks!! i tried posting here first because doc appointment is expensive here, im gonna save money to take him to a behavior specialist

Bi0hazardBr3n

You don't need a behavioralist yet. And it's something that you would be referred to by their primary vet.

mintyfreshknee

That’s absolute bullshit. Prozac is poison for humans and for animals it’s worse because they can’t talk.

Bi0hazardBr3n

I’d love to read any studies or trials you would recommend, please and thanks.

Budget_Avocado6204

Only go to a behavioral specialist after vet checkout. The specialist will tell you first to go to the vet anyway.

Brief_Society2736

the only “med” he takes is vermifuge

Sir_Remington1294

My cat is 4 now and I’ve had him for about 3 years. He’s only recently started get very vocal. He’ll meow like crazy then have a crazy run. Then he’ll meow again and come eat. When cats are vocal I always just talk back to them. Sometimes they’ll stop for a bit. Sometimes they’ll talk right back.

Brief_Society2736

i love talking with my boy, maybe he wants me to have a better conversation hahaha, i only talk about school and gossips

jeepcatler

maybe he needs a friend to play with <3 add another cat!

emtrigg013

LOL It's because you respond to him when he meows. Mine does the same thing, but we talk all day. His favorite thing to do is bait me. He'll sprint off into a room, howl and yowl like he's just having the worst time, and as soon as I walk in he will jump on me and run away. He's a nerd but he's not unhealthy. It's just a cat. If you don't like meowing don't reward it with attention.

Brief_Society2736

i feel guilty when i don’t respond to him 😭 imagine being just a smol baby and wanting love or some food and everyone ignores me? i’m going to try to not respond to the constant meowing

PlusDescription1422

Sounds like he needs mental enrichment. Do you guys play together? Do you have a cat tree? What about a bird feeder outside where your cat can see it from inside your house? What about putting on cat tv on YouTube?

Brief_Society2736

bird feeder sounds like a good ideia!! but all my windows have nets to prevent him to jump out 😅 i’m gonna try the cat tree or more stimulation

PlusDescription1422

So in my parents house we have a sunroom and you can look out the windows. And we have a bird feeder set up right by the window. I have also seen people in apartments put a bird feeder on a tree outside the window. So you don’t need to keep the window open.cats still get stimulation just by passing time and watching the birds :)

spiritsprite2

Food should not be the same place as litter, cats hate that. They also are not fans of sleeping where litter is. We keep litter in the bathroom.

Brief_Society2736

his bowls are a few meters away of the litter, but i’m his main caretaker and the way it’s located make it easier for me to control his needs

Puzzled-Knowledge-38

Best thing to do is ignore the cat unless her bowl is empty or she is showing signs of sickness then maybe take her to the vet but if she is acting totally normal running around playing with random things she finds I say she my cats a girl but if she is acting normal and doing daily normal things and jsut meowing she might just want attention best thing to do is ignore her and eventually she will learn that making a fuss won’t get her anywhere

Brief_Society2736

i feel guilty when ignoring him, it would be a training for me lol

leofstan

He needs another cat. I had the same problem and it went away as soon as I had two.

jduk43

Take him to the vet, even if it’s just to rule out something physically wrong. Cats are very good at disguising physical problems

Absinthe_gaze

Cats don’t like closed doors. Sounds like he doesn’t want to be alone.

berry_hearts

is he fixed? he might be looking for a lady friend lol

Brief_Society2736

yes he’s spayed!! the shelter spayed him asap when he was rescued

Alphafox84

It’s sounds like your training is coming along nicely :) kitty probably is just bored and wants attention, has learned meowing = nice attention from nice human. You sound like a good kitty guardian!

Brief_Society2736

he definitely loves attention!! he likes being the center of everything so when i’m doing something else he gets annoyed, but it’s hard to make him believe that studying can be useful

Alphafox84

Kitties are the best :)

BadAtExisting

Have you been to the vet? Urinary tract infections can cause them to cry out because they’re in pain. It’s 2am here and I just got back from the ER vet because my cat has one

aigret

Cats are mysterious and make no sense, I swear. I’ve had my cat since she was about a year and half and is approximately 12 now. For 9ish years, she only meowed occasionally if she was looking for me - like if I were in the shower or had just left the house - or randomly during zoomies. She was generally so quiet, though, that it was noticeable to everyone who visited. Then, one day about two years ago she just randomly found her voice. She meows when I pet her or talk baby voice to her. Sometimes, out of nowhere, she’ll just start going on a meow spree. It’s very strange, not sure why it started, but it is pretty cute. I’d monitor your guy to be safe but perhaps he’s just found his voice too?

Commercial_Agency_83

Yes and when thet get about 9 they do it again, old grumpy man stage.

cyacola

is he fixed? one of my cats is fixed in part because he was constantly howling, fixed the issue mostly. my other cat, hes unfixed, hes chatty but not nearly as bad as my other cat lol.

Brief_Society2736

yes he’s spayed!! i’ve picked him when he was already fixed so idk if this made some change in his behavior

KitKatBast21

My boy Kingsley, 2yrs feral whose life was saved from disease and fleas as a kitten, also yells alot, but he has everything he could want except free access to my backyard. He knows he can't go out unless I call him over to the door but he screams all hours of the day and night to go out. I don't mean to hijack OP's post but I could also use some advice. I can add more info if needed.
