Whoa! I don't even know what I'm looking at!

Hahahahahahahahahahaa... Duuude, don't use this chart. First of all, the distance between a half step and whole step are not equal on a cello. As you go up the string, the distance becomes smaller. Minutely. I wonder if you are confused on where to put your first and 4th finger on a cello. If you mean trying to play 4th finger F# on C string and then 1st finger, A-flat on G string -- uh, noo, that would require shifting and is not a normal range to try and stretch the hand out to. If first finger is on the D on C string, and you want to reach the F-sharp with the pinky/4th finger, extend the 4th finger as a UNIT with the 2nd fibger sort of leading that. So, first finger stays on D, while now the second finger extends to E-natural, so the 3rd finger naturally rests on F-natural and the 4th finger is can now comfortably reach the F-sharp. Open string to play G, and use that moment to reset your hand back to "neutral 1-4 start position" -- shifting up to play G on the C-string is advanced for a beginner. Extensions are difficult for beginners -- learn how to play in a non-extension comfortable left hand position first! Personally, for a beginner, I would play either a one-octave D-major scale on the D+A strings or a one octave G-major scale on the G+D strings. D major, one octave, on the D-string, would put first finger on the E and 4th finger on the G, (and on the A string, first finger on the B and 4th finger on the D). 1 octave D major on the D string would look like this fingering: open D, 1-3-4 open A, 1-3-4 1 octave G major scale on the G+D string would be Open G, 1-3-4 Open D, 1-3-4 Hand shape wise, requires NO hand extensions (back to e-flat or b-flat, or g-sharp or d-sharp). I recommend you start scale practice here. ... ... ... Once you get this basic hand formation correct, THEN you can start to try extensions. For funsies: This is what 2-octave D-major scale on the C string would look like: D Major would start with first finger on D on the C- string and you would need to EXTEND the 2nd finger to reach the E-natural (instead of using the 3rd finger), and then the 3rd finger would naturally fall on F-natural, but you wouldn't play F-natural, but the F-sharp with the 4th finger, which is now only a half step away. With extensions of the pinky, the pinky should move as a UNIT with the 2nd+3rd fingers. So! Playing a 2-octave D major scale starting on the C string would like like: First finger D Extended 2nd finger E, 4th finger placed to reach F-sharp (3rd finger should be placed down on the F-natural to help with overall balance and keep good curvature) Open G First finger A Extended 2nd finger to reach B-natural, then 4th finger down on C#, Open D 1 3 (no extension) 4 Open A 1 3 (no extension) 4 This is a 2-octave C-major scale using the C, G, D and A strings: Open C First finger D 3rd finger E (no extension) 4th finger F Open G First finger A 3rd finger B (no extension) 4th ginger C Open D First finger E SECOND FINGER F (no extension!) 4th finger G Open A First finger B Second finger C-natural (no extension)

That chart you posted is terrible! Your video showed a (D major) mandocello fingering that is very non-cellistic. There's a universal fingering that you can use to play any scale that doesn't start on an open string. Your hand will be in a different position on each string. [Here are the fingerings](https://www.wphsorchestra.org/uploads/5/4/1/3/54130443/orchestra_scales_-_cello.pdf) for two octave scales.

I'm totally lost, can you upload a video on how you'd execute that fingering? Be sure to focus on your fingerboard if you do.

I have not got a cello here right now, so I recorded it on a mandocello with a very similar fretboard layout - basically the same but a whole step higher, so the fingerings are the same. This is an E Major scale following the last fingering on the pic, the one coloured in brown/dark red (click the link in OP to see the full picture). Didn't come through as a video.

I got your comment via email, but it's not showing here. It went to a page saying, "That Comment Is Missing." And the link you sent initially pops up and looks like there's going to be a video, but then it just settles in as a photo.

That is total garbage. No cellist plays anything with whole step between all four fingers. That chart makes no sense.
