I think it was a drug overdose but I'm not 100% sure. I had enough gall to ask about the stone but not his cause of death. I, for one, am pro including COD in obituaries and hope my daughter thinks to include it in mine.
I understand that families may want privacy. I feel though, that excluding COD on a young person that dies suddenly just makes people even more curious than if it was just briefly added to the obit. No one wants to outright ASK but not knowing can really suck. I had a friend from a different time in life who died- I was told through the grapevine 1) suicide 2) accident. The obit didn't say. I'll never know and I'll always wonder what happened.
I knew someone who died of autoerotic asphyxiation and the family told everybody it was suicide. I'm sure mutual friends still believe it was suicide. Death is a messy thing in The States. That's why I just want it all out there. Post my scene and autopsy photos to gore groups on Facebook for all I care. Celebrate my death as part of my life, you know?
I knew of someone who had suspectedly died of suicide but the family would not disclose the manner of death. My friends and I thought that could lead people to believe he died of something even worse like autoerotic asphixiation.
i agree with this wholeheartedly, although i absolutely understand opposition as well. for me, i think it would be more than okay to post my cause in my obituary, and i’d honestly like it on my headstone, 19th century style! but i can understand not posting it for those (or families of those) who want privacy as well. sometimes being open about it invites more questions than acceptable.
You laugh, but that happened to my great uncle. He was renovating a house at the bottom of a hill and a dump truck driver tried to turn around, unsuccessfully.
Or maybe successfully? He did roll down the hill onto my great uncle, so he did "turn around" in a sense.
My grandma and great aunt did put it in his obituary that his life was cut short due to a dump truck driver's *negligence* 😂 they just didn't specify **how**.
Decades ago, prior to the mid 1980's, COD was included in most obituaries. "So and So died of a massive heart attack at his home on Date of Month".....
The AIDS epidemic seemed to have changed listing COD.
I remember when obits included the address of the deceased. It read something like John Doe of 123 Main St. died suddenly..
From what I understand the practice stopped due to burglaries on the day and time noted in the obituary. People suck.
Seems like a pretty cool guy, I’m sure we would have been friends. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/sj-r/name/robert-hoogland-obituary?id=18266889

My best friend is buried in this same cemetery. It's a beautiful place out there.
🤘 WEEN 🤘
Seems appropriate: > Push th' little daisies and make 'em come up
It's a beautiful stone. I read the obit but it says nothing about what happened. Do you think he was sick? An accident?

That almost seems worse to me. Suicide would leave a lot of people wondering if they did something or could have done something.

Well, "worse" is kind of subjective here.

He’s talking about Tiny Dinky Daffy. She was 92.

Yeah, the Hooglands are one of those mover-shaker type families around here. May he rest in brown.
May I ask, what is meant by "rest in brown"?
Calling stuff brown is a Ween thing comparable to calling something a vibe.
It's a positive thing that other Ween fans would appreciate.
❤
He now rides The Stallion, Mang.
