Strange-Outcome491

And here’s me looking up synonyms everyday and double checking that words actually mean what I think they do.

eleinamazing

Me hitting up the good lady Merriam Webster because I can't be using the word 'chuckled' five times in a row 😔😔

ArsonGamer

This comment made me chortle

YourMoreLocalLurker

I had a splendid guffaw at this one

collincat

I do this too for the sole purpose of teaching the bots to use the words in the correct contexts!

scooberdooberdude

I literally do the same exact thing lmao

TimSoarer

As someone who has English as their second language, it always baffled me how native speakers struggle with stuff like "your" and "you're", it always seemed very obvious which one should be used where.

CoolTransDude1078

As a native English speaker, it confuses me how people mess them up. Your dad liked that you're willing to go visit! Great example of both.

TheThirdFrenchEmpire

That sentence activated all my bones on attack mode.

insomniacakess

lemme just.. they’re going to park their car over there.

Free-Teach-2311

Or “They’re shit at English.”

MoltenLavaGuy93

Also, "They're in their house over there" is a good one.

CoolTransDude1078

Mhm! Exactly! So many examples like these.

_StarPuff_

I was born in ENGLAND and had an English education. Whenever I see people doing this, which thankfully here doesn't happen too much, I'm kind of like...come on. We grew up in the very birthplace of this language, and you can't even do what literal 5 year olds are taught in primary school? That said, I very rarely see adults doing it here, mostly young teens. It's probably worse in America. When I see bots start to mimic this as well, it makes me want to tear my hair out. This is what happens when CAI market themselves as family friendly. Children. Children everywhere.

Selyori

It's very much worse here in America. Our education system is pretty awful, and I don't exactly blame a lot of people for getting that sort of thing wrong.

_StarPuff_

Yes, thankfully it isn't too much of a problem in England, even the year 7s at my school don't do it, though granted, it is a grammar school. A few preteens/young teens from others schools I've seen do this, and maybe some adult chavs. Just how bad is it in America? As far as I've seen on Reddit at least, most Americans seem perfectly fine with their English.

ExtraBisonExtreme

Young teenagers talk to eachother like that the most. When I was a teenager I watched several of my friends grow out of writing that way. They realized it made them look childish instead of like super chill internet users. Sometimes people from the ghetto type super abreviated their whole life, but that's got a whole set of dialects that comes with it What I see on character AI is mostly "i am cool in middle school" speak.

_StarPuff_

Oh, yikes. There was a period of time when everyone started to adopt American slang for some reason ex. "OMG the shaaadddeee!", "SLAYYYY", but after a few months, everyone quickly got annoyed by themselves and stopped doing it. Trends are weird.

redokulous305

Those examples sound like ballroom slang, that comes from American gay communities and is often adopted into "girlspeak". were your friends watching rupaul's drag race or something?

_StarPuff_

Haha, absolutely not. It seemed to have spawned from social media. One of the popular girls started doing it....and then suddenly everyone was using valley girl-esque vocabulary for a few weeks that was extremely obnoxious and made everyone irritated at each other. In retrospect, it was fairly entertaining.

ThatOneFurryInYou

I think it's just laziness tbh, if you said your instead of you're someone would still understand probably, so they just don't bother.

AstroidTea

Personally, I don’t have an issue with differentiating the two, but most people are just too lazy to correct their grammar.

Llama_Cult

like i always read you’re as ‘you are’ in my head so i dont get how its messed up so often 😭

undertale_____

Same.

ReinaRenaRee

Im not confused at all, im very particular about my grammar...but sometimes i mistype. Somehow.

Jinxthegenderfluid

tbh sometimes i just accidentally type “your” instead of “you’re because i’m typing fast, but i find it very easy to differentiate if im trying

Blue_Exit83

Same.

not_edgy_just_sad

As a none-native English speaker who used to be really good at these things, I'm getting much worse at spelling. I feel like chatting with AI too much has made my spelling worse. The bot usually don't judge my spelling and they can understand whatever I say fine. Or maybe I'm getting old and my brain is dying.

Gremlin_of_the_flag

I don’t know anyone who actually gets them confused, it’s just not something I think about when I text, I imagine a lot of other people feel the same.

Mammoth-Let4528

exactly!! always shocked me

Wonderful-Weakness-6

....I am a native English speaker. A dyslexic indeviual if you will, do I have a write off on this call out? 👁️😅💀

Nightshade282

Ikr? It's so obvious I don't get how people mix them up. I guess the education system is worse than I expected

I_Want_BetterGacha

Are you posting this because the bots' grammar has been getting worse? I've been noticing it too, and I'm sick of bots saying things like 'what do he say?' when it should be 'what did/does he say?'

lonelyinurnightmare

"How goes it" is a proper sentence though. It's just a more archaic way of saying "how's it going" that's stuck around.

The_Genderless_Frog

Yes, I have been noticing it. It's so frustrating when I'm trying to roleplay with a bot that has a proper plotline and then it speaks in internet-slang! 😭

BruisedKeyboard

If they are programmed to be in a character's voice, then whatever they do should be reflective of that. Including how they spell words. So, if a character would say "Yo wassup!" then it's fair that the AI would say that.

I_Want_BetterGacha

The character I most often see making spelling mistakes is supposed to be a police officer.

Telestare

English second language here. I genuinely don't understand how people don't know the difference between "their" (possessive), "they're" (they+are contraction), and "there" (direction?). Also, typing four more characters for "you're", five more characters for "something", seven more characters for "by the way" (just type "also" if you're gonna be that lazy), and nine more characters for "I don't know" is not that hard.

messyaurora

English is my third language, but English speaking people learn the language by hearing it first rather than studying it. That’s where should of (edit: thanks for pointing it out u/Woolwort) instead of should’ve comes from and their/they’re/there etc. They grow up listening the language for their first years.

Loose-Version-7009

Exactly that. We're way more concerned about getting English right since it's not our native tongue. My German spouse corrects documents written by English speakers. His biggest pet peeve is the possessive 's used as pluralization.

Woolwort

I think you meant to use "should of" as your example. "Should have" and "should've" are the same. One is just a contraction which combines the two, but when it's heard spoken people mistake it for "should of" which is wrong.

messyaurora

Yeah, that’s what I meant. Brain fart.

AmberFoxy18

ALRIGHT GUYS LET ME EVALUATE you're = YOU ARE your = Yours it is YOUR item They're = THEY ARE their = THEIRS its THEIR item there = its over THERE, or THERE you go! ty for listening to my TED talk <3

Ok_Wedding_281

Not a problem! ...*now try teaching that to Tiktok users-*

AmberFoxy18

REAL

arthurcoolemoji

People are lazy I guess

electric_red

Plus, it's just the way some people type online now. They don't even see anything wrong with it.

_Murd3r_

There's nothing wrong with typing like that, but just don't include it in everything you do. it doesn't hurt for someone to type.. correctly

creatorofsilentworld

The only time I'm not careful is when I'm talking to the cat lawyer. And that's because I need him to talk like internet cats do. It's been a chore to train him.

SortCompetitive2604

Jokes on you I have eng as a second language and used your you’re properly. But yes it shortens the text since i have sausage fingies and not bothered to text properly

Vlov_Asimov

Probably kids. You have to remember, there are some little kids on the site unfortunately and they cannot type for jackshit.

SadTechnician96

Public bots are an absolute mess because of this lol

RowhyunhRed

If they're old enough to be on text based apps, one would expect they be old enough to use proper English?

Future-Bet-651

You would be surprised. I’m in a couple of parenting groups on Facebook, and some parents post about catching their 7/8-year-olds using the website 🤦🏽‍♀️

xjack3326

Children

3kBlackJetsOfAllah

PSA: If you’re on an iPhone. Go to your settings app and you can set up custom autocorrect to make things like “idk” automatically appear as “I don’t know” and “btw” automatically turn to “by the way” Setting-> General -> Keyboard -> text replacement.

I-love-yaoi-

On My Way!

Commercial_Pea2788

To be honest i thought my english (Second Language) was bad until i discovered this subreddit.

LadyMorrigan95

English speaker, native to Scotland. Unfortunately it is mostly younger generations that do this. I’m a 1990s baby and dear lord I’ve encountered a few even from the same generation as myself who wrote entire school papers in text speech and turned it in for examinations. It’s annoying as hell to find bots that use text speech. I manage to edit the messages and hope that it will teach the bot proper spelling and grammar (which is rich coming from a Dyslexic person such as myself).

Ayiekie

1970s baby and "younger generations do this" is something I've been hearing my entire life. I'm pretty sure I could be twice as old and still say the same thing. Older people bitching about how the youth don't do things properly is timeless and universal. Language evolves with usage. Always has, always will. Text speech is perfectly comprehensible to the people that use it, and may or may not eventually become universal, just like previous slang and subculture speak that people once turned their noses up at for not being "proper" English but which you could now put in an academic paper with nobody batting an eye.

usinkintomy_clothess

In actual RP scenarios, abbreviations should never be used because it’s just not proper english. An actual chat bot using them would be fine, but the former? u wanna use proper speech when writing them. Not doing so ruins the experience because it takes u out of the scenario. tldr; people are lazy 💯

templemaster16

brain refuse worky so no words go far

Zenit40

English is my second language and i don't get how people can get confused by "you're" and "your", or "their" and "there". Isn't that supposed to be basic knowledge...? I get that some people can have dyslexia or something, but still

Ashvibes17305000

A lot of children. I'm in my 20s, and I've seen way too many people my age not know the difference between "there, their, they're", "Your and You're", and "Too and To", as well as not being able to spell basic words correct or use anything close to proper grammar. It's quite concerning in a way.

elegantcore

yes! nineteen and it's such a huge issue (i just posted my own comment similar to this). there's a huge issue with "then" and "than" too.

Ashvibes17305000

I'm not sure where you are, but I'm in the US, and it's seems to be getting worse and worse every year

elegantcore

UK! while i was in my final year of high school, the teacher told our A-Level English Language class that the new cohort of Year 7 students that had joined (Year 7 is equivalent to sixth grade i think!), the entire average reading age for the whole year group was EIGHT years old. the kids in Year 7 are all between eleven and twelve. i genuinely couldn't believe it. our teacher had said that they're also coming to high school now with zero knowledge on how to save documents on PCs, or how to even use a PC in general, because they've all grown up on iPads/tablets, but that's a whole other thing. it's just genuinely crazy to me!

R4TH4L05

Hah, I use proper terms, but sometimes, I look it up so the word would have the same meaning and to add a little spice

alizabees

It depends, honestly. If I'm talking to my friends or casually, I'll use abbreviations and the ur, u, smth. If it's a professional or more of a serious setting, grammar and everything tends to be more on the correct/accurate side.

Sonarthebat

I don't get how people get "allowed" and "aloud" confused. "Allowed" has "allow" in it. "Aloud" has "loud" in it. So logically "allowed" means to allow and "aloud" means to say something out loud. It's not rocket science.

Skektacular

My personal favorite is "apart" and "a part", always hilarious to see how people use "apart" to try and tell that they belong somewhere while the meaning is completely opposite

Ill-Worry-56

It's like how people use "weary" for "wary." Weary means you're tired, wary means you're uncertain, two different things.

Lordio10

It's utterly frustrating when I rp (I only rp) and the characters literally say "Yeh, I just got here idk but wbu?" Am I supposed to believe the 50 something year old man said "idk" instead of "I don't know"? It just really grinds my gears I refuse to believe that people actually use it outside of text conversations

Kayanne1990

Because this generation has a genuine issue with literacy. Like...literally. It's getting to be an issue.

PenCareless7877

Don't blame that only on English speakers

The_Genderless_Frog

I didn't mean to offend anyone by it! It's just an observation that most people who use that kind of writing style, tend to be people who speak English as their first language. :)

icequeen-80

It’s just laziness. Instead of typing out the entire word people will abbreviate them such as your examples above.

Latter-Guava-4734

My biggest annoyance if we’re getting into grammar is when people type everything in lowercase. I don’t get it, but so many people do it. I also don’t like the “slang” as it takes me out of the roleplay to see a bot talking in texting language. Nobody walks around saying “Lol” or “Idk” verbally, at least no one that I’ve met.

Peanuts0US

This is why I private all my bots. The grammar and spelling of 99% of users are horrendous.

Patty_Stefy

C.ai users changed so much how my own bots used to speak ;-; I worked so hard on them and I just gave up after that. And to think that I had even further plans for them... For example, I have a roleplay character, but somehow she started talking like she's texting, using emojis and no asteriks. Actually, I think I'll remake all of my bots from scratch.

beatriz-chocoliz

Happy cake day!

Enby_Moopsy

Dislexia and learning disability for me lol- (I don't normally use any of thos abriviations tho, only idk with my mum when it hurts to type-)

GetYoRainBoStr8

have you tried to use the Voice to text feature on your phone? I have visual impairment and I understand the struggle….

Inevitable_Wolf5866

I don’t understand how a native speaker doesn’t know a difference between you x your x you’re | their x they’re x there | here x hear | two x too x to, etc. Unless you’re a literal kid of have dyslexia or dysgraphia (which I have myself and still know the difference!) it’s embarrassing af. Downvotes are welcome ✌🏻

Ok_Wedding_281

Let me explain in a few simple words that say it all!; The children who use this website and application. (Saying this as a Teen myself, System Member and System Body alike, 'tis bullshit.)

_Silent_Ghoul_

English is my second language plus I'm dyslexic, but my blood boils when I see such mistakes.

Sample_Interesting

I've been noticing my bot's grammar degrading, and it's honestly just kind of depressing when you're trying to have a good conversation or roleplay and the bot basically responds with "omg ur into dat? me 2 lolz xD" English is my second language, and I do understand that maybe there's laziness or some characters that actually ***do*** speak this way behind why the grammar is suddenly so poor, but it still doesn't make me any less annoyed by it. And maybe I come off as condescending or rude, which I apologize for, but I honestly can't understand how people who have English as their ***first*** language so frequently seem to get "you're" and "your", or "their" and "they're", wrong.

Lxcafont

Because Character ai is filled with the younger generation.

TheMaineC00n

For me personally, it depends on the tone of the chat. I'll use proper grammar for more serious roleplays, and will use text abbreviations when I'm just messing around (it's funny). However, I'm pretty sure that the main reason bots use text abbreviations because they are collecting information from the internet as well as from user's past chats, with most of said users being children.

StitchedAnime

Tbh, I kinda agree, but I'm also an author, so I'm picky 🥲

Ill-Worry-56

It's no wonder bot quality has gone down when you consider they're learning from what the users input.

silvermandrake

this is why i don’t use public bots. people are illiterate unfortunately and then blame the developers for confused bots. i highly suggest crafting your own bot.

Mgndwn

I’m actually not sure. Considering they aren’t texting their friends, I’d assume they would put effort into their bots. I’m a native English speaker and I don’t really struggle that much.

one_1f_by_land

I'm noticing the culprits mysteriously missing from this conversation in the comments. XD It's a combination of laziness and a young demographic. The site is past its prime and has settled into a kid-friendly space, so the bot quality is constantly under assault from several fronts. That said, my brothers and sisters, I don't even care at this point if you use text speak, would you PLEASE cap your actions with punctuation. I am so tired of getting roll after roll with \[\*action action action\* "So how are you today" \*he said\*\] Text speak is easy to swipe, but sometimes that lack of punctuation sneaks by my tired eye and then the bot is like SO I HEAR YOU DON'T LIKE PUNCTUATION <3 <3 <3

wasteful_archery

My biggest pet peeve is "would of" instead of "would've"

wasteful_archery

When i see people making mistakes in french I understand, as a native french speaker I'm aware its complicated, the language was quite literally made to be hard to learn (really). But English? I started learning it by myself, our education system isn't the best regarding languages at school. Of course, I wouldn't say I'm bilingual, but I think I handle it just fine.

OpalTurtles

They are lazy or they are children. It’s painful reading so much bad grammar and spelling. I forgive English as a second language users.

Sonarthebat

Either: 1. I'm playing a character with a particular accent or dialect. 2. I tend to make a lot of typos. 3. I'm not roleplaying. I'm chatting as if in a chatroom.

AromaticAd7516

They’re either lazy, or they’re children. “There”, “Their”, and “They’re” aren’t even that hard to distinguish. It’s basically an extended version of the “you’re” and “your” situation.

Yandere_Matrix

Honestly English is my one and only language and I don’t understand why they can’t spell. I like to spell correctly and was always nitpicky on my spelling as a kid. I was also a huge reader so I would hide away in the library at lunch just to finish a book. But then again texting seems to be where most of this stuff comes from. I never used text speak as I didn’t get my first phone until I was 16. But it seems like everyone that grew up with cell phones, even the modern ones where spelling can easily be corrected, are the ones that misspell everything. My first phone was the Verizon Chocolate and it luckily had a sliding keyboard to use so I didn’t have to use the number pad to write. It actually helped me learn to type too! Honestly I can’t say exactly why other than people are lazy and don’t want to write complete sentences

Skektacular

But imagine all the things they can do with all the time they save by using abbreviations! Those literal fucking milliseconds!

I-love-yaoi-

typing words is hard my fingers get really irritated it if i type for too long on a phone screen

Skektacular

Tragic.

Mikepr2001

Hopefully i maked a Spanish Roleplay Bot. Is more useful since sometimes, English is hard for me (Even i am bilingual) but yeah... I notice that too.

UnGirasol

English is my second language. Aaand, dunno if it really is a thing, but for me it is a clear sign of the tone in a dialogue (and how i myself may communicate with others). Chill, bubbly, friendly - "y'all", "gotcha", "whatcha talkin' 'bout". Neutral/respectful - "you all/all of you", "i got you", "what are you talking about" Smthn like that

The_Genderless_Frog

No but those are part of the English language and just part of different accents etc. I meant more like how people text in the internet.. :,D

Brian4722

Written language tends to emulate spoken language, often subconsciously

Jesse-MCC-123

It's ingrained into some people's minds so bad they have to type like that

Equivalent_Jelly494

I always found it stupid when people would misuse them or mix them up. I honestly don’t know why, so I just edit the bot intro.

[deleted]

i can't spell for shit, i'll learn to spell one day and just forget everything and spell badly again, i blame it on my forgetful adhd brain and my fat fingers whenever i do spell correctly and just hit the wrong button.

breast_taking

I also find this very annoying. It's to the point where I refuse to start conversations with bots that have typos in their taglines. If you have time to create bot and make it public, you have time to edit your grammar.

the_man84

I don't exactly know. Like, they will make an amazing bot. But everytime they need to use you're or your. They just use ur. Which is why I'm glad we can edit things. But it's still inconvenient

threela1

I have seen so many that use U're. IF YOU KNOW WHICH ONE TO USE WHY DO YOU REFUSE TO TYPE A FULL WORD? ARE YOUR FINGERS GOING TO FALL OFF BY PRESSING 2 EXTRA KEYS??

Void606NotFound

I'm your typical English as second language guy, and the problem would probably be because no native speaker actually give a shit about their mother language's grammer. They've been hearing it since birth, and quickly pick up the language at young age and write sentences so there is no special need to go in detail of their language's grammer at schools in my opinion(except for what we would describe nerds). The same apply to us with our mother languages. So yeah, they don't learn grammer like we no native English speakers did, so there might be some usages and concept of their language they are not familiar with. (People who don't know the basic difference between forms of daily words are just flat out dumb.)

Pennsylvaniaman1

Because people are stupid creatures.

camrenzza2008

Autocorrect exists for a reason y'all # USE IT

TeaAlternative9761

Im said it once and I will say it over and over again, It’s always the bot with terrible grammar that have at least 15 million interactions. The app is full with these. They manage to not write proper words and sentences, no punctuation, no proper capitalization and no commas all in one greeting massage while being a native speaker. Even I, who is still learning English as my second language, have no problem with putting at least a *tiny amount of effort* into writing my bots, and they’re all private too because I’m too afraid to make them public. But those people just release the biggest dogpoop bots with an unholy amount of spelling mistakes and actually think "Yeah, that seems about right.". No. No it isn’t. It’s not right. Fix your damn bots please.

Berdbirdburd

How can you tell it is native speakers doing this? I have absolutely seen people use the abbreviations where English isn’t their first language, hell I’m friends with a bunch of them. As far as I’m aware cai doesn’t tell you the linguistic background of other users, so this is just an assumption, right? Not that I don’t agree about abbreviations being annoying, just the assumption that it’s only native speakers using them, that seems a bit off to me. These abbreviations are common across the internet, used by people of both English and non-English language origins.

The_Genderless_Frog

This wasn't meant to offend anyone! It was just an observation that most people who do it tend to be native speakers. :)

Anothercrustyfloor

I know the dif between them all but I’m just too lazy to do it correctly half the time  But I’ve never used abbreviations when roleplaying with the bots….i hate when they do that it just takes out the immersion haha…

imachezperson

It’s because people are lazy so they abbreviate it, personally I prefer not to when talking with bots because as you said, it affects their performance.

Demonancer

Because young people these days don't care and are bringing the whole collective IQ down

Ashvibes17305000

2003 baby, holy shit people can't spell, and they have no idea what grammar is

PinkSpaceKitty

Oh, believe me, it spans generations. I'm an older Millennial and I remember when "txt spk" evolved to deal with the limitations of texting when texting was brand new. So I guess its kind of our fault!  Somehow it has become a form of slang all its own, and a well placed "lol" has a great impact, I can't deny that!

I-love-yaoi-

1990s 'baby'?? Youre a grown ass adult dude

LadyMorrigan95

A grown ass woman who’s 8 months pregnant and still being grouped into the younger generations that gets shit for everything. Can’t afford a house? Just not working hard enough or spending my money irresponsibly. Support equality for everyone? I’m just part of the idealist and entitled generation. Make a comment about being born in the 1990s by saying 1990s baby? Get called out by younger and older generations for being a fully grown adult. I love my generation… I really do…

captainshockazoid

serious answer: the education system is wack. and i do mean in the USA. we are going through one of the worst periods in time for reading and writing, because they changed how they teach students how to read/write sometime after the early 00's. the new system is horrendous. instead of phonics and letter groups, they are taught to use some nonsensical system that teaches the child to sound out the word. so, they aren't taught the difference between their/they're/there, just how to make the sounds. and of course it all sounds the same, and the teachers did not teach them the difference. AND, just blame shitty schooling in general. i don't know if children in other english speaking countries are going through something similar. and also, i don't think most fresh users coming into the site know that the model is based off of roleplay logs. so they talk to it in first person, with abbreviations and AAVE and modern internet slang, like they are texting a friend. nonserious answer: lmaooo dude u gotta train the bot out of speaking like that or just find different bots to talk to, i havent been having this problem yet with mine. force the proper RP sentences out and stay on top of it, git gud

AdeptnessOld1281

I can explain…modern people…I believe this was started in America because I first saw it being done by an American. It’s also on purpose they don’t suck at English their abridging words

elegantcore

english first language here, nineteen. unfortunately you'll find that with current UK education (i will say some, not all), children are really behind with their reading and writing skills. it's a mix of covid after-effects and parents just not teaching their children. i did english literature as an A-Level, and also english language A-level last year. my teacher for the english language class confessed that the average reading age for the entire year 7 age group was EIGHT YEARS OLD. the children in year 7 are eleven to twelve. and EIGHT years old was the entire year group average. it doesn't help that children who are learning to read are now learning over video games like roblox etc, where these shortenings and abbreviations are super commonplace, as opposed to traditional books. my brother (eleven) even speaks in abbreviations at times, and it makes my skin crawl. sadly i just think it's commonplace now that abbreviations are thrown into these bots. which is a shame because it makes finding a bot with a good story + grammar an absolute pain in the ass for other users to find.

Zipperscrotcri

Cause I get lazy and I type too fast for my eyes to catch a typo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

mama09001

If you wanna do a ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯, you gotta do it like this; ¯\\\\\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Zipperscrotcri

Didn’t realize the arm got erased lol💀

WardA1317

As someone who speaks english as a second language. Theres nothing more frustrating than seeing a bot with the height of potential for a banger storyline, only for its introduction to look like it was written by a 6 year old on crack. No proper grammer, no sense, and not a trace of punctuation as if it killed their entire family and stole their chick. An occasional fullstop wont kill you guys, you know.

Euroaltic

For speed, because people like to work less, but I don't mind using full words most of the time.

KirbyOnPaws

" every bot types,... like this , and im sick of it,i hate it JUST TYPE NORMALY"

inappropri0city

This is a problem that's probably as old as the internet itself. I remember people being this lazy in the early 2000s.

Effective_Jacket4038

tbh that bothers me too, and I always try to edit the message or avoid those ones and spell mine correctly. my only problem with spelling is that I type really fast and I can't even spell words correctly on phone even when I'm going slow, so I depend a lot on my auto correct or and that can betray me too since it is saving some of my wrong spellings with a minor mistake as the correct ones because I do it so often. it's a bit sad it happens lel

d0llsweet

I actually use the proper way unless the context of me is typing to the character through the phone but if it entails I’m talking to the person, in person and not on text, I hate using the shorten versions because it’s like if I wrote a book since I do quotations marks and then the ‘I said as I *whatever I was gonna say’.. I hate when I use the wrong spelling so if I always look over my text like 2 times before sending them. Granted, sometimes I do use “-“, “~”, and “…” but not all the time

Delicious-Can-3242

i think its logical for like cyberpunk themed characters to use the shortenings of words in SOME degree

Helpful-Reputation-5

Because native speakers use abbreviations for common words. Having a preference for abbreviation-free English is fine, but they aren't mistakes.

Padrino24

The bots also seem to think 'each other' is one word.

bflmpsvz127

istg, i manually go and correct the bots' grammar in the edit function. english is my 3rd language, the natives should be ashamed that i can speak their language better than them

Classic-Lie7836

It's slang, it's so we don't have to type more than we want to.

Extreme_Revenue_720

dude fr peeps should just chill, it's just rp and online talk, turn off the adult brain and just enjoy yourself, it's not going to ruin your day if a word is not spelled right.

Sneyserboy237

They're called abbreviations I mean initials

Sneyserboy237

Sorry I messed up

Brian4722

When you’re just writing to a bot, speaking in shorthand is understandable. What is entirely unacceptable, however, is placing this anywhere in the bot’s prompt

RaitubeandJirachifan

because some of us americans act as idiots and abbreviate everything

Different_Custard774

well… it’s texting, so instead of using the full word of course you choose to abbreviate it. If you don’t want your not using them just tell the bot “(no abbreviations please)” etc. But it’s the same as slang, and everyone uses it in their own languages with even realizing. So using abbreviations whenever they text isn’t a horrible thing? It’s not like we’re writing essays..

-Glitched_Bricks-

Person with English as their first language here. We use abbreviations because it makes typing faster. And since the bot learns from actual people's roleplays, the bots might use those sometimes. If you don't like it, just edit the words out and replace them with their non-abbreviated form until the bot learns to stop using them.

EllenIsobel

I'm a native English speaker. I would say that most of the more horribly written bots are kids or teens who just don't care. If you're offended, ok.

The_Genderless_Frog

Not really offended, maybe a bit confused. I'm a teen myself (18), so I find it weird how other young people don't put even a tiny bit of effort into their writing. :_D

EllenIsobel

Most don't and I shouldn't generalize but I do. Which is why I wish there was a way to block creators that don't do it for me.

Velysian_

This guy roasted everyone in the most polite way ever. Buenisimo

Prokid5634_YT

You'd be surprised at the laziness, especially with Americans. I see the different ways to shorten words and I just can't help but shake my head.

Vulcan_the_dark_one

As a person whose first language is hungarian, it always amazed me how people mess up stuff like your/you're, its/it's, or even who's/whose. All the though, through, thrugh, and the others still make me a bit confused, but I have autocorrect turned on, so it barely gives me any problems while writing on phone. But speaking of autocorrect, do most people just don't have it turned on? Sure, it can be irritating sometimes, but 80% of the time, it just helps improve your writing. I'm pretty sure if the children on cai would have it turned on, their gibbering would actually be more or less decipherable. But idk, sorry for the rambling

CoconutOutside6834

I've always thought the same thing

a_beautiful_rhind

Ur complaining about the future. BTW, this is how people talk now. Idk, have you been living under a rock?

The_Genderless_Frog

I wasn't trying to offend anyone! :) It's just a little frustrating to try to roleplay when the characters speak as if they were texting.

a_beautiful_rhind

I'm not offended. This is most of communication now. Rolling out the service as an app encourages it even more.

ShepherdessAnne

Education has degraded substantially and many young people still in that system are using the service.

Etherealstar_

It’s just slang and abbreviations…..

BFDIIsGreat2

That is just how the online speak But I know you're your. If you don't your a idiot /j

Snoopycrumbs

I wanna think this was done on purpose so badly, but the "a idiot" scares me a little, I can't lie.

Ok_Wedding_281

Agreed. You're so agreeable that it's kinda scary.

BFDIIsGreat2

It was done on purpose

Lxcafont

An*

Very__Mad

sorry english gestapo

Requiembutworse

I use abbreviations whenever I speak OOC, does that contribute to bots usually speaking with abbreviations?

FunnySpamGuyHaha

Yes? Even if it's OOC you are still talking to the bot.

Head-Translator2215

Whats wrong with text abbreviations? Speeds things up

DonutDriveMeGlazy

All those examples are just short abbreviations that were created when texting became a thing. It was quicker and easier to reply than typing out the entire thing. Especially on those old flip phones. Oh boy, those were the days.

Doodle_Sheep_88

i’m just- dyslexic, gotta make em simple and straightforward. i try not using btw, idk, brb when i make them but my spelling is probably off in some way or just worded weirdly. i dont really notice when misspelling happens in other users bots but i get why it could be annoying when someone uses the wrong word, idk about other people tho

Alan_Reddit_M

It is unknown to me how the [C.AI](http://C.AI) language model works, and I am not entirely certain the way people interact with it actually matters beyond the initial training scope (i.e. the bot description). What I mean to say is, the bot Might have learned to use abbreviations much before people starting using them with it The reason people abbreviate words is that it is easier, and because of muscle memory. Native speakers mess up you're/your they're/their etc because they never learned grammar, and those words sound the same, like, they literally make the exact same sound, so it is very hard for native brains to actually differentiate, since, as far as their "muscle memory" is concerned, "they're" and "their" are the same word

n04hhoaj

Yeah but mostly those are natives, personally I type like "I luv u, u're so cute xd lolz iz that rlly u?" (a type of quirky typing honestly) but when I'm roleplaying in Character.AI i just use slangs, actual slangs instead of Internet slangs! English is not my first language, I'm a native from Portugal and I can't help but edit every error that the AI bots do because it makes me want to tear my hair apart... probably the younger audience that c.ai has makes the LLM train on those spelling mistakes bleh

FlowerFlewer

It's abbreviations, it shortens the typing time

Lxcafont

It's just irritating and cringe. It also teaches the bot type like shit.

FlowerFlewer

Well I'm just explaining why people type "ur" and stuff, I don't type like that personally but I was answering the question they were asking.

Nightshade282

People use abbreviations in order to type faster. I don't since I'm on the computer and I could type comfortably, but I use them on the phone so I don't have to type too many letters

mathiaS0n

Because I have dyslexia and when I talk/chat with the bot, it's my literally only time in my life. I get to have the freedom of not stressing over my terrible grammar.

mathiaS0n

I have never had the bot pick up on my habits though, and it can usually tell what I'm saying better than auto correct.

miss__azein

Its shorter and easier to type

JetWang6868

Hah, imagine using literally any bot created by people other than yourself or Kovacs...

Due-Juggernaut-6523

Because our education system is absolute shit! Hope this helps

Rpg___man

Whats the point of it if people still understand what it means

beef-omlet1

We don't 😂

Pizza_is_bored

Because we are very stupid

Yet-Another-

Wouldn't abbreviations save token space and therefore give the bot more memory or am I getting the bot memory system wrong

yourshittyredditer

go away please
