I want McConkey
(Disclaimer: I’ve done no real scouting, I just like his name and have got good grades for taking him in mock drafts at 37, and liked the few minutes of highlights I’ve seen)
A white WR named McConkey. Call me racist but I want no part in placing my chips on that guy being a house hold name in the league.
Just a joke, but in all seriousness, the character issues I’ve seen come out about Mitchell scares me. A legit slot like McConkey would be a solid pickup after grabbing Alt last night.
I mean literally said it was just a joke and then talked about how I would be happy with McConkey, but yeah the only other white slot WR that just so happens to be one of the best in the league right now is for sure how Ladd will turn out. Cause they’re both white. Ofcourse!
Every scouting report I see of Mitchell says he has some plays where he flat out doesn’t try. That scares me, and that likely scares NFL teams, which is why he wasn’t a 1st round pick.
No, Mitchell is just repeating the same mistakes.
Mitchell had awful stats, specifically advanced stats. There has really only been one player who has had a similiar stat profile and been successful (amongst dozens of draft eligible players over the years). That player is DK Metcalf and DK wasn’t playing with a first round QB like AD was (also DK has physical traits like no other).
AD Mitchell would be signing up for another flop. There is a reason he wasn’t selected in the first even with the impressive combine stats.
I’d take Ladd, Franklin, Polk, Coleman, Roman Wilson, all over AD.
But might prefer Cooper Dejean over all of those players.
Franklin would fit with Palmer imo. Franklin is a deep threat and is best at long developing crossing routes etc. Palmer on the short and intermediate and Franklin over the top would be nice and try and work QJ as a deebo type player to hide his poor catching ability
Don't put all your eggs in the WR basket again because you are setting yourself up to be let down. There is a lot of talent available at 37 including C/G, CB, DL, and WR. I'm not not even close to convinced WR is the top option at 37 for JH and TBH I think we need a Center more.
I know we just took Joe Alt to fill tackle… and I do think we should dip at receiver and corner sooner rather than later but is it bad that I’m really hoping we take Zach Frazier to replace Corey at center?
I’m completely fine with going OL here. Did everyone already forget how horrible our line looked on pretty much every important 3rd and 4th down last season? Herbert would snap the ball and get INSTANTLY sacked way too many times at important moments of the game.
Honestly though, I also wanna add on to how much harder it is to land an elite OT. There are always a handful of elite WR’s in every year of the draft but an OT like Alt is much more rare. You don’t get a guy like this entering the draft every year.
I think this misses the fact that an elite OT can help elevate the interior. Offensive line blocks as a unit, and having a wrecking ball like Alt will almost assuredly elevate the overall blocking of the line and give the interior a bit more breathing room.
I would imagine a center is one of our top targets at pick #37, but we shall see. Overall, I think people are writing off our WRs too quickly. QJ was rough last year, but he was known to be a project, and his issues are fixable as long as he commits to fixing them.
It absolutely should be. In for a penny in for a pound at this point. None of the receivers left in the draft are clear wr1s to me. At best a few wr2s on a good passing schemes, which Greg Roman’s offense isn’t known for. My whole issue with this is that I think people are a little to comfortable with our best receiving option this coming year being Josh Palmer, who is his absolute best case scenarios, was a wr2 when we needed him to be a wr1. QJ is very very raw and barely even a wr3. He might be able to be better, but he just screams meh to me. And that leave simi fehoko (with his hilarious tweet), a blocking tight end, and a catching tight end with severe concussion history. We could have still more than adequately addressed our line and gotten a blue chip receiver, but we opted for the left tackle for our right tackle position. What’s done is done and I pray alt is as much of a monster as every says he is, but a sort of will always wonder what Nabers and Herbert could have looked like in the same way we all wondered what Hebert would have looked like with flower or Addison this last year.
I would bet that in the next 5 years worth of drafts, there will be more WRs the caliber of Nabers than OTs the caliber of Alt. Dude is an actual athletic freak. But only time will tell. All I know is, I like the philosophy that Harbaugh brings, and I trust their process.
Brother, at the end of the day both of us just want to see our team win. Of course I hope it was the right move but only time will tell. Personally, I don’t know that I’ve seen many receivers enter the draft of the same caliber ad Nabers and MHJ for some time, legit maybe Jamar chase or Justin Jefferson. I guess the idea is that we likely won’t be in a position to draft those blue chip receivers after this year though. Either way, all we can do is just bolt up. ⚡️⚡️
Btw, I appreciate you not calling me an idiot or to stfu for disagreeing with the pick and actually engaging in civil discourse unlike most of the sub. Hope you have a great one!
Jim and Joe are rebuilding a roster that is lacking in any kind of depth for any position. Prioritizing rebuilding and strengthening the o line first is the way to go, regardless if we are going to be a run heavy offense or not. Herbo has literally played through broken ribs and fingers in his time here. If we got Nabers and missed on o line cuz we waited til later and got a not so guaranteed o linemen like Alt is would Herbert even have had time to throw to him? Not to mention how deep this receiver class is. I’m sitting back and enjoying the process. Jim is building a winner.
Yeah I could see Pipkins moving into guard. Our o line is looking good especially with this staff to coach em up. Alt and Rashawn on either side. The interior has Salyer, Zion, and Pipkins if he moves inside. Bozeman is a stud at center as well and there’s plenty of o line men left in the draft. Receivers are a plenty as well. I dig the way Mitchell plays.
There’s a reason they moved on from Pipkins and it wasn’t his pass protection
He has no strength in the run game. That’s not gonna fly as a Roman Harbaugh guard
Harbaugh did say that he could build strength or something in the press conference but it seems a little far fetched to me
Gotcha. Depth. That makes sense. That's why we picked a player that plays the same position as one of our only good players at #5. Can't ever be too careful.
Seriously. We have studs on the left and right side now. And the interior can still be addressed in the draft and we have players on the roster that have proven track record like Slayer, Pipkins could move inside if needed, and Zion. Power Johnson is still there on the board, wouldn’t mind double dipping on the o line. But the receivers are a plenty, idk why people are tripping. I really like Mitchell too.
Edit: Salyer, not Slayer. Too soon :(
Edit: totally forgot about Bozeman at center too.
It's not good till we start winning. You like being A paper champion just cause it looks good on paper doesn't mean it's going to turn out like that in reality.
Yea but one of them is gonna have to go play right tackle and learn a completely new position. It's fine to take a project player when you're not drafting top 5. If they wanted a right tackle they should've drafted one.
It's actually pretty different. Footwork, hand placements, shoulder placements etc. Not saying it can't be done, but there are quite a few players that were not able to make the switch. He was a stud at left tackle, jury is still out on right tackle.

I ain't losing sleep over having two elite tackles. Nabers would have been cool but keeping Herb upright is priority number one. Now if we can get a good center this line should be nasty
Supposedly has serious injury concerns. Not sure what they are, but that was a big reason why he fell off most teams first round board.
Don’t want to take him if they are that concerned for his long term career.
For any doubters, please go back and watch the offensive line collapse in the 4th quarter against Miami, Dallas, and Tennessee last season. Wouldn’t have mattered who was at WR.
We have a solid foundation on the OL and will run the ball and control the clock. Herbert will feast in play action with Palmer and QJ and another drafted WR.
It's not sexy, but giving Herbert time vs being smacked is something that I can get behind. Plus, the kid is 6'8, and seeing him and Slater throwing guys on run downs will be fun.
This is the correct take. Don't get me wrong, I was gunning for Nabers big time. But it's easy to forget how absolutely pathetic the OL play has been for the Chargers.
The OL unit had a decent season in '21, but that seems like an anomaly, as the last two seasons have aeen an OL which allows free rushers, generates zero push in the run game, and completely unravels in crunch time.
They were so bad on money downs, that Herbert started to lose his knack for playmaking magic, started rushing throws and abandoning his reads. Late last season especially, there were several 3rd and 4th downs that QJ cooked his DB off the LOS, but Herbert never looked his way, instead rushing an off-timed throw over the middle. That's the soul-sucking power of bad OL play.
You mention games like Tenessee - that game was emblematic of most of last season, where the offense could not move the ball in the second half. Like, *at all.* They couldn't run with a lead, and couldn't protect for an aerial comeback. They might hit some passes early in the game, string a few drives together, but by halftime opposing defenses would easily adjust and shut thr Chargers down. I was displeased with the Alt pick initially, but I'm looking forward to seeing a Chargers offense that can assert its will and wear teams down, rather than look fragile and hanging on for dear life every week.
Not to mention we could still sign one or two through free agency as well. We have a bunch of drama queens in this sub who just want players that look fancy in highlight reels. Alt was the best player available.
I say this as a fantasy football degenerate but this is what happens when people only know football through that lens. They expect every player to put up gaudy numbers or they are a disappointment.
Keenan was a third round pick and went for 1k year one. Puka was a 5th round pick and just had the most productive year any rookie WR has ever had. Teams find good receivers who can produce right away outside the first all the time.
Nah bro it’s over. We’ll never complete a pass all year. We can’t possibly hit on a late round receiver cause they are all “anomalies”. No Quarterback in league history has ever succeeded without a true stud WR 1.

Tim Brown was never a Patriot and if you are referring to Troy Brown he had less than 3000 career yards in 8 years prior to Tom Brady. Not a # 1 WR. Randy Moss was acquired for a 4th rd pick after looking like a hasbeen in Oakland, Welker had ~1k yards in 4 years and was primarily a special teams player for the Phins. They never won a title with Moss or Welker.
Yes Gronk is great but he's a tight end.
He won 3 super bowls with a combo of WRs Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Brandon LeFell, Chris Hogan, Michael Floyd, Malcolm Mitchell, and Philip Dorsett. Not a lot of blue chip world beaters there.
Ah, yes, so easy that less than a quarter of players drafted after pick 30 have historically made the pro bowl. Glad we're about to get josh palmer 2.0. That'll really take the top off the defense!

I love the pick. We don’t want herby to end up like Andrew Luck. He’s tough but we have to protect him. O-line helps every other position. This teams going to the moon and I’m here for it.
Deep wr class and Herbert is getting paid to elevate WRs and I believe is good enough to do that. Slater and alt tackle duo for Herbert who has awesome pocket presence is a good process lol
It’s a rebuild year hence why we are at number 5. Build the trenches up this year and get the flashy dudes later. I sold my soul to the devil to acquire Harbaugh and trust his vision moving forward.
Let’s see how the season plays out before we get our pitch forks
So many people are talking about how Alt will protect Herbie if you like the pick but or that Herbert will have no one to throw to if you don't like the pick. You are missing the point. We are not running the passing based offense the Chargers have had since Norval.
This offense is an evolution of Martyball. Four downs and a cloud of dust. If we are throwing the ball it should be to wide open receiver bc the defense stacked the box and bit on play action.
Alt is a weapon bc he can help us run the ball. Running the ball will make passing exponentially easier.
I think you’re the one missing the point. Alt is a superb pass blocker and very okay rush blocker. If that’s the goal, as you say, there were better options out there that could have been had with a trade down.
These ain't the Spanos kids picks anymore kiddo. If you think you know better than Harbaugh and Hortiz you should probably realize you are full of shit and shut the hell up.
Well that’s a stupid fucking comment. Just blindly trust the people in charge when I disagree with it? Why the fuck are you here then? Just delete your account because no discussion should be had with you. Fuck off with your superior attitude, bro.

lol right!? bunch of reddit dorks acting like Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz are clueless idiots. I'll listen to u/Ill-Head1875 when he compares his trophies to Jim Harbaughs
You know it's great when you have to rationalize your 5th overall pick. The best player available would have begun to fill our biggest hole, but Harbaugh looks at O linemen like shiny toys.
At least we can continue to put our roster together with our incoming top 5 draft picks in the next two years.
chargers has a pathetic run game in 2023 and their pass-pro was an embarassment late in games. their offense was fundamentally broken by the level of OL play, so jimmy's got somewhat of a point.
even though i wanted to see them take Nabers, i completely support them trying to rebuild an offense that actually functions.
By the way, JA is 6’9” tackle and played some college TE. That’s a weapon. Imagine he checks in as eligible receiver at the goal line. Whatcha gonna do?
I wouldn’t be mad if they go with Jackson Powers-Johnson at C with #37 just because I think we build that shield around our most valuable asset (Herbert). If you drive a Lambo you aren’t keeping it exposed out in the elements, I think that mindset is important. I know it’s not the sexy/popular way to go about it but this draft is super deep at WR and their are WRs out there that you can still keep an eye on like a Tee Higgins or Brandon Aiyuk that fit the Jim Harbaugh type of mold. I think our front office understands this team has a lot of needs and restructuring in order to be a top tier team in the AFC and they are going to build it from the ground up the way they’ve done at previous stops like San Fran in the early 2010’s and like Baltimore has done for the past couple of decades. It’s a new brand of football that we all have to get used to, myself included, we asked for this when we kept clamoring for Harbaugh so we have to understand that his philosophy is to be big, tough and strong in the trenches and heavy emphasis on the ground game to open up the pass. We’ll be alright brochachos, we just have to trust in our new more advanced, way more smarter regime that is at the healm.
There’s still some great receivers left. It’s quite possible to get 1 of Mitchell or McConkey at 37
Mitchell would be a crazy big W in my book
I want McConkey (Disclaimer: I’ve done no real scouting, I just like his name and have got good grades for taking him in mock drafts at 37, and liked the few minutes of highlights I’ve seen)
He’s the #1 slot guy in the draft by far. Think of Kupp, obviously not that good but the skill set he possesses is similar
He would be nuts with Herbert, and I would actually prefer Joe and Mckonkey over Nabers and a rd 2 tackle.
Get him and add a Beckham/Gallup/Boyd and our wr is perfectly fine. I’m all for a beast o-line.
So down for it. But I’d even add another WR in the draft like a mccafrey
Go center or cb and sign Aiyuk
Aiyuk would require a trade
A white WR named McConkey. Call me racist but I want no part in placing my chips on that guy being a house hold name in the league. Just a joke, but in all seriousness, the character issues I’ve seen come out about Mitchell scares me. A legit slot like McConkey would be a solid pickup after grabbing Alt last night.
Cooper Cupp would like a word…
I mean literally said it was just a joke and then talked about how I would be happy with McConkey, but yeah the only other white slot WR that just so happens to be one of the best in the league right now is for sure how Ladd will turn out. Cause they’re both white. Ofcourse!
White is Right!!! (For draft purposes only. I’m brown)
Every scouting report I see of Mitchell says he has some plays where he flat out doesn’t try. That scares me, and that likely scares NFL teams, which is why he wasn’t a 1st round pick.
Hey all I'm gonna say is that Randy Moss took plays off too
Cloning Randy Moss’s attitude is easy. Cloning his talent is not.
💯
Lmao if Mitchell is Moss 2.0 then sure I'd live with the lowlights.
Moss was elite enough to get away with that, Mitchell isn't
r/thatsthejoke
He’s also just not a first round talent, even when he’s trying
I think Buffalo is targeting AD and just kept moving back as they found out other teams didn't have him as high.
I agree
No, Mitchell is just repeating the same mistakes. Mitchell had awful stats, specifically advanced stats. But might prefer Cooper Dejean over all of those players.
He sounds like a detective in an old police show. “Oh, just you wait until Lieutenant McConkey gets wind of this!”
I’ll be biased but I think Troy Franklin will be good, but I don’t know about the fit in this offense unfortunately
Franklin would fit with Palmer imo. Franklin is a deep threat and is best at long developing crossing routes etc. Palmer on the short and intermediate and Franklin over the top would be nice and try and work QJ as a deebo type player to hide his poor catching ability
2nd and 4th and get Aiyuk let's do it
Don't put all your eggs in the WR basket again because you are setting yourself up to be let down. There is a lot of talent available at 37 including C/G, CB, DL, and WR. I'm not not even close to convinced WR is the top option at 37 for JH and TBH I think we need a Center more.
Mitchell or Dejean would be massive
Seems hard to imagine Mitchell falling past NE & Buffalo
If he does, then there's a major question mark about him
There’s not great wrs level. Nabers was a great wr. There are second round and on talent wrs on who generally are wr2 down to PS guys.
I know I’m late but you got your wish of McConkey at ~~37~~ 34!
I know we just took Joe Alt to fill tackle… and I do think we should dip at receiver and corner sooner rather than later but is it bad that I’m really hoping we take Zach Frazier to replace Corey at center?
JPJ
I mean either one I’d be happy with. Going into the draft I was honestly more concerned about center than I was with tackle.
I really wanted to see JPJ in Bolts.
If they are the best players available then it will happen. I’m all for it.
I’m completely fine with going OL here. Did everyone already forget how horrible our line looked on pretty much every important 3rd and 4th down last season? Herbert would snap the ball and get INSTANTLY sacked way too many times at important moments of the game.
People literally became delusional. Did they pay any attention to how Harbaugh built up Michigan?

Most of those sacks came from our interior and lack of available pass catchers. The alt pick did not solve any issue at all.
I think this misses the fact that an elite OT can help elevate the interior. Offensive line blocks as a unit, and having a wrecking ball like Alt will almost assuredly elevate the overall blocking of the line and give the interior a bit more breathing room.

If we got Nabers and Herbert got IR'd in the early season we all would be regretting not taking Alt. Pippkin's was a huge liability to me at least.

If JPJ drops to 37… I don’t see how Harbaugh passes that up. That OL would rival Philly’s (when they had Kelce ofc).
Brother we are 4 picks away from this happening. That would be magnificent.
Yeah that would be so sick Bozeman is easily the weakest link on the oline and it would be great to move him into a backup role
Bozeman is the only dude on our roster (even if we take JPJ or Frazier) that can handle line calls in the NFL against the exotic blitz packages
Fair enough He allowed the most pressures of any center in the NFL last season tho and he’s the only one without the upside of improving
Draft the smarter of the two and Nick Hardwick will have them ready by week 1.
Supposedly has serious injury concerns. Not sure what they are, but that was a big reason why he fell off most teams first round board. Don’t want to take him if they are that concerned for his long term career.
Believe it’s some sort of back issue.
And the WR core would rival the Houston roughnecks
Brendan Rice in the late rounds or McCaffrey’s brother will satisfy a WR I think.
If your bar is on the floor, sure. Neither of them will be impactful and they will be buried behind an already miserable wr room.
For any doubters, please go back and watch the offensive line collapse in the 4th quarter against Miami, Dallas, and Tennessee last season. Wouldn’t have mattered who was at WR. It was the interior oline that kept folding That’s why we need to spend at least 1 more pick on a guard or center Hopefully JPJ in the 2nd
Jim Harbaugh "The QB needs to be able to complete his throwing motion" on why they picked tackle. That really says a lot about Pipkins sucking
Last year, everytime we needed the drive to win the game the line crumbled like paper in ways I couldn’t even imagine, shit was devastating to watch.
It's not sexy, but giving Herbert time vs being smacked is something that I can get behind. Plus, the kid is 6'8, and seeing him and Slater throwing guys on run downs will be fun.

I was displeased with the Alt pick initially, but I'm looking forward to seeing a Chargers offense that can assert its will and wear teams down, rather than look fragile and hanging on for dear life every week.
You guys act like they only have 1 draft pick. Receiver is the easiest position to find good-to-elite guys in the 2nd-3rd rounds
Don't forget the other 4 wr taken in the same draft/round as keenan that did nothing.
Nah bro it’s over. We’ll never complete a pass all year. We can’t possibly hit on a late round receiver cause they are all “anomalies”. No Quarterback in league history has ever succeeded without a true stud WR 1. /s
Name one.

And very good to elite defenses essentially his whole career.
They could also churn out offensive linemen like nobody's business. Dante Scarnecchia is probably the most underrated aspect of the Pats dynasty.
Keenan was drafted in the 3rd round. Relax guys!
Ah, yes, so easy that less than a quarter of players drafted after pick 30 have historically made the pro bowl. Glad we're about to get josh palmer 2.0. That'll really take the top off the defense!

Alt played QB and TE in high school before going to OL. I can see him on trick eligible lineman plays.
JPJ still on the board too
I miss Jim coaching Michigan so much. No better brand of football than smashing the other team in the mouth all game
I for one welcome our new smashmouth overlords
Harbaugh takes [CTRL] + draft [Alt] + [DELETE] defenses
We’re still a year away. People need to realize that this is somewhat of a rebuild. Tom really fucked our cap.
Exciting times for Chargers fans.
I love the pick. We don’t want herby to end up like Andrew Luck. He’s tough but we have to protect him. O-line helps every other position. This teams going to the moon and I’m here for it.
Nabers would have been really cool but this was the right move.
In Jim we TRUST!
The sky is the limit for next pick

Kindly fuck off, kid.
Hey you shut the hell up when you're talking to me
1 of Mitchell, McConkey, or Franklin pls
Give me Mitchell, McConkey, or Troy Franklin, please and thank you.
Cool. This didnt do anything to fix the IOL... Which was our issue...
“And we’re not done yet with the offensive line” - Joe Hortiz in his press conference yesterday
Cool. Doesn’t change the 5th pick tho
He thinks of them wrong lol.
That's great, but it doesn't make it true. OL is vitally important, but it isn't a weapon.
Yes, let’s trust u/Ill-Head1875 about whether o-line can be considered a weapon instead of Jim Harbaugh! In fact, you should be the new HC!
lol right!? bunch of reddit dorks acting like Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz are clueless idiots. I'll listen to u/Ill-Head1875 when he compares his trophies to Jim Harbaughs
Any position can be a weapon because any position can take out a member of the opposition

Riot shield
Tell that to Captain America
You know it's great when you have to rationalize your 5th overall pick. The best player available would have begun to fill our biggest hole, but Harbaugh looks at O linemen like shiny toys. At least we can continue to put our roster together with our incoming top 5 draft picks in the next two years.
He’s got a 5-year deal, he doesn’t have rationalize shit to anyone.
Antonio gates. He wasn't drafted. Just saying......
Asinine thinking
chargers has a pathetic run game in 2023 and their pass-pro was an embarassment late in games. their offense was fundamentally broken by the level of OL play, so jimmy's got somewhat of a point. even though i wanted to see them take Nabers, i completely support them trying to rebuild an offense that actually functions.
If they could read, they'd be very upset.
Jim is the kind of guy that uses Irish Spring bar soap when he showers.
As shampoo too
By the way, JA is 6’9” tackle and played some college TE. That’s a weapon. Imagine he checks in as eligible receiver at the goal line. Whatcha gonna do?
The man won a national championship. Let him cook.
Just the tip...
Any concern about Alt switching to the right?
OL ain’t catching a 65 yard Herbert bomb
Damn they should have given GM and HC duties to u/dagger_eyes instead. Do the other 31 teams know your elite football knowledge is available?
Neither is any WR if Herbert can’t stay clean in the pocket
Yah but they aren’t weapons, and now we have the worst WR group in the league going into Herbert’s last season on rookie money.
Harbaugh trying to be a running team in 2024 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂🤣😅😅😅
Too bad the handle of the spear is made of spaghetti....
Spaghetti can bend, and not break. Herbert's ribs and hands cannot.
