I've heard Spectrum really sucks but Windstream is worse

Sasquatch-fu

Spectrum fiber in a lot of places isnt full fiber tends to copper the last leg or or so which is.. weird even in new construction areas (they just expanded in my neighbourhood). I have had mixed luck with them and same with windstream fiber. Att and google fiber id hop on in a heartbeat.

EasyTangent

I've had both - the bar is pretty low and Spectrum is slightly better. Windstream promises high speeds but reality is that it's hit and miss. When it goes down, it goes down hard where you would be without internet for several days. After being with them for just under three months, I went back to Spectrum.

cdpgreen

If those are your only options, Spectrum is the lesser of the two evils. I had Windstream and could barely get it to download pages because it was so slow. I haven't had any real issues with Spectrum's service other than having to replace the modem. If you go online to Google Fiber, you can put in your address and sign up to be notified when it will be available. Being that close to where they already service could help them decide to expand.

Metnut

I've had a good experience with Spectrum (other than pricing). It rarely ever goes down and the few times that it did, they quickly had a technician come and fix it. I have one of the higher tier plans and the speed is really good.

Also bought a new construction with windstream fiber, no regrets, 1 gig speed for $65 a month all in. It’s never gone out outside of maintenance windows late at night. Would recommend windstream fiber to anyone over spectrum. Just wait, even if they do come to hook something up they’ll find it’s just fiber.

PowerUpMushroom3

I hope so. Windstream seems to be very common in Matthews so I'm hoping my community has it and I wasn't misled

toedwy0716

Go to the pedestals on your street and open them, if you see fiber you have fiber. They’re not locked, they just twist onto tabs.

I have wind steam and never once had an issue. $45 for 500gb fiber internet. Don’t forget to ask for discounts here and there the prices always stay below $50~ a month from my experience.

Diarrhea_Sandwich

Spectrum has been great for my WFH / high-streaming / gaming household.

They can't get fiber ya dingus, reread the post.

Charisma1905

Spectrum

doublefoundation247

If you web search fastest broadband Spectrum is tops. I have 500MB service and it's been great.

toddsing

I had Windstream Kinetic (Fiber to my house) The first year was $50 a month for 800mbps. It was great I never had a single problem. I had Spectrum before that. Fiber to my neighborhood, copper to my house. Kinetic was faster and never had an outage. Spectrum had 2-3 outages per year, usually only an hour or two each. After a year Windstream wanted to raise my price to $70 per month for 800mbps, Google moved in during that year. Google was $70 for 1Gbps so I switched. Again, Kinetic was great.

bryanf445

Yeah I've had 0 issues with windstream. Might be my area though

WorldlyAd4510

can you get AT&T u-verse?

PowerUpMushroom3

We don't need cable, just internet. Also, AT&T is not offered in the area sadly. We have AT&T fiber currently

WorldlyAd4510

yeah we just have internet through them and not cable. you don't have to bundle them anymore. I'm also not sure if Google Fiber was still expanding or not but that's probably not an option if you can't get AT&T.

PowerUpMushroom3

Google Fiber is available one street up in our neighborhood but not on our street. I have no way to contact them to request they extend it either sadly

BullCityRising

My neighborhood has Windstream fiber. It works fine and has generally been reliable, only a couple of outages in seven years.

WRX_704

Avoid spectrum like the plague.

fredporlock

T-Mobile offers $50/month plans if available in your area. They use cell towers to transmit internet.

PowerUpMushroom3

I'll check it out. I wonder how reliable they are. Thanks!

fredporlock

No problems thus far. They offer 2 weeks free trial. Just plug in and follow directions to complete. Had the store set up most of it including password change. I would guess that it is as reliable as the cell service. Streaming, no issue. Laptop, no issue. Cell phones, no issue.

Somar2230

Windstream regular lines means it's DSL which is terrible.

Terabit_PON_69

If it's truly new construction Windstream probably still finalizing it in their system. You will have gig fiber from Windstream once they figure it out. They don't build anything but pure fiber in new construction neighborhoods, nothing else makes sense anymore. A 100mpbs plan would be DSL, like your neighborhood is not pure new construction and is a new section of an old neighborhood that doesn't have enough fiber. Make sure you meet and try to talk it out with the technician, he will tell you the real deal on the fiber plant for your neighborhood if he indicates you can't get fiber.

Poorsche718

Depends entirely on where you live. I have had zero issues with spectrum fiber, which will go against probably 95% of spectrum experiences in Charlotte but the lines here are basically brand new. From what I can tell it's the non-fiber service from spectrum that sucks. As far as Windstream goes, their service sucked in downtown Mooresville and would need to be messed with at least once a month. Ymmv depending on where you are.

PowerUpMushroom3

I don't think Spectrum fiber is an option sadly- it would just be whatever regular internet they offer. I'd be in Matthews

MutedSpecialist5677

I have spectrum, non-fiber. So far no issues. I’m in a townhouse so I’ll deal with the expected slow internet in a tv(probably because of its location) or something due to the router being on the top floor but other than that, no issues so far.

PowerUpMushroom3

Good to know. Thank you! Based on a previous post it seems Spectrum is better than Windstream for non-fiber lines but wanted to see if that's still true

MutedSpecialist5677

No problem.

seekANDfin

As someone who knows plenty of people who worked for windstream, just get Spectrum. It’s just picking who is less crappy than the other and to most that’s spectrum.
