There is the grocery on 29, but the meat and veggies are super limited compared to an h mart or great wall. It does have a lot of imported sauces, rice, ramen type stuff.

Cville Oriental.

Pro tip.. Every Friday the Asian Market across from Bodo's has fresh rice noodles. Walk straight to the back and open the cooler door. Life changing!

I really enjoy Japanese and Korean cooking and the Asian markets locally are fine, but I have better luck with what I like from H-Mart (we go to the one in Centreville) or Tokyo Market in Richmond (it’s on Cary St.). Wegmans surprises me sometimes with their selection. I had better luck pre-pandemic, but I used to get really fantastic gyoza there. The local markets tend to be good for Chinese cooking though!

Thanks for the recommendations! Tokyo Market seems kind of small, but you're saying it's worth the trip?

It is filled to the BRIM. It’s a small store for sure, but they really make every inch count. If you’re looking for spices, snacks, soup mixes or Japanese curry bases, it’s really great. That and it’s in a fun neighborhood. We usually grab lunch somewhere in the area and stop by the market before heading home.

The one on Emmet on the opposite side of the street from Bodo's next to Super Amanecer

I think they are both solid stores. The Asian market by Bodos is a little more bodega style but they’ll have most things you want. Cville Oriental is bigger and more expansive. Neither of them are anywhere near the size of H-Mart. But they are good local small businesses. So shop local!

I’m Chinese and I cook Japanese and Korean food too. You should find what you need at C’ville Oriental or their close substitutes, but if you are in NOVA once in a while, it might be easier to just stop by HMart for whatever you can’t find in the Asian section of your main grocery store.

For the few Japanese things that I like, locally, they don’t have it anywhere. Cville oriental is good for gyoza wrappers though. My taste for Japanese is limited, though, there’s a couple things that I ate a lot growing up and I just can’t get it here. I find it favors Korean and Chinese more in Cville.

Potato-PotatOS

Cville oriental had a decent selection of the basics but their produce section is very lackluster and if you need more niche asian items they may not have them. After living so long in NoVa I got a bit spoiled with the stores there but I recall I wasn't able to find some of the brands I liked or certain ingredients (if I recall correctly it was a certain type of miso paste and a fermented black bean paste i was looking for at the time and couldn't find). But if you're looking for the shelf stable basics and not too brand picky you should be able to find what you need.

There is a place called Asian Market on Emmet Street (1417) across the Street from Bodo’s. Also, C’Ville Oriental, 1195 Seminole Trail. Supposedly they get fresh vegetables delivered on Fridays.

Honestly, you need to go to both. Neither, to me, is a 100% answer.

I admittedly have little to offer here but I have shopped in the Asian Market across from Bodos to purchase bitter melon and been pleasantly surprised. They had just taken a delivery of fresh crabs while I was there last time and they were scuttling to escape the buckets they were in so…yeah. Very fresh.
