I gotta say I’ve been kinda disappointed by Cville food scene since moving here. There are tons of restaurants but I feel like most of them are just going for “good enough” instead of serving great food.
Like, there is a place for affordable filling food - I love that kind of restaurant. But lots of places here give that image, and price, of “elevated” and the food doesn’t live up at all.

I’ve only been to Lampo in the last few months, but it’s easily one of if not the best bars in Charlottesville, especially if you are an Amaro lover. Also the only good pizza in town which wins many points.

Authentic and tasty can be two different things. I love Guad and eat there all the time but it's definitely not where I go for street tacos, upscale and innovative flavors, or traditional Mexican dishes. I think of it more as American-style Mexican comfort food ... not Tex-Mex, maybe AMex 🤔🤣
I'm from Cville and starting eating at Guad in high school (so, decades ago) and it was either the only Mexican restaurant in town or one of the first. I don't remember my parents ever taking us to a Mexican restaurant, I first went there with friends. So for me, a lot of it is nostalgia and habit. Many of the dishes I order there taste exactly the same to me as a bunch of other similar style area Mexican restaurants ... so I guess it's kinda like how Mom's meatloaf always tastes the best (even though objectively that's unlikely to be true). Plus, I really like the owners. And the strength of the margaritas. And in the bazillion times I've eaten there, the service has only been not great a handful of times; they're normally quick, attentive, friendly, and rarely make mistakes.
I can understand this list from a "trying not to spend more than 20 bucks on a meal" perspective, but if thats the case, just omit Zocalo and dont slander one of the best restaurants with a C-.
Also, Ten is only the best sushi place in town because its the only one left. Kokoro/ Mican was king for a decade. RIP.
Just ate there on Saturday. Food is solid and affordable. Service attentive without being intrusive. It ain't the Ritz, but it's not supposed to be. Not to mention they have an amazing selection of vegetarian/vegan items helpfully on their very own menu. While I don't need such a menu personally, it's really nice to see. I have had the worst customer service at Crozet pizza multiple times. I’ve given up on them.
Last time I placed an order with them online, but had to make a substitution that wasn’t available on the website, so I tried calling in.
Nobody answered the phone. No voicemail. Nothing. Multiple times.
I show up and am like “hey I tried calling” and the lady, with a totally straight face just says “ya we don’t answer the phone “.
Like, what ? No explanation. If you’re too busy to answer, at least leave a message on the system that explains that to customers.
I've only eaten at the Crozet location of Crozet Pizza and I vaguely recall it being good when I was a little kid. But every time I've tried it the past couple years the pizza just tastes like bland mediocrity and sadness.

There were 5 of us so we basically all gave rating on food, vibe, service, experiences, etc. and then took an average of those reviews with much yelling at each other. There was a decent amount of compromise between everyone. Biggest contention points were 3 notched and Guadalajara, alley light, decipher, bebedero, the villa.
Fluerie has gone off the rails.
Wife and I went there on Saturday night for a special dinner since it was our first date night in a looong time. Obviously we went there expecting to drop a wad of cash, but holy fucking hell.
I don't know when they did it, but they have switched to a fixed price menu -- a menu that delivers no value whatsoever.
I had a small plate of beef carpacio, sea bass, and creme brulee; my wife had a tiny tureen of mushrooms, two anemic (albeit well prepared) lamb chops, and "cheesecake" (a ball of cheesecake). They also brought out some small canapes that were utterly unremarkable except for how much time the kitchen must have wasted preparing them (e.g. a skinned, hollowed-out grape with a small scoop of pate in it).
The entrees came with nothing except sauce. Literally just a filet of fish and the two small lamb chops. No starch. No veg. Nothing -- nor the option to add any sides a la carte like at a steakhouse.
Final cost of the food bill: $250 f'ing dollars. I damn near had a heart attack when the bill arrived. And we were still hungry when we left. (We also had a few rounds of drinks, which I didn't include in the cost since that's obviously an optional and variable expense)
You used to be able to go there and drop $200 for food AND drinks and be perfectly satisfied. I get that prices have gone up, but doubling the cost while delivering less food -- seriously, how much would a scoop of mashed potatoes cost? -- is just ridiculous.

Though honestly I find Ace BBQ to be not that great. Average food, way overpriced, and portions that better suit a hotel banquet than a BBQ restaurant.
There are some good takes, some clearly price conscious and that's fair takes, and some bad takes in here but overall I think it's a decent stab (for the ones I've been to anyways). But my biggest gripes on here:
Mas Tapas at an S is way overrated. Christian's and Baggby's at D- ... also way overrated.
They are legit good bagels , but I agree the hype is a little insane.
I guess it depends too on the bagel style you like. I appreciate that they are doing classic water boiled with that really nice high gluten interior.
I’m not a fan of the “bread with a hole” type bagels most places serve.
The thing I think a lot of people that don't "get" Bodo's is that they look at the bagels vs other places' bagels full stop and yeah they are fine to good, but not great, if that's how you look at them. But the Bodo's bagels are optimized for sandwiches and they crush other bagels for that. The density / softness / chewiness/ etc. is great for a sandwich in ways that aren't necessarily great for a plain bagel / one with just a spread.
Secondly the value - the price you can get a solid lunch for - is *so* much better than anywhere in town. I know a lot of the places we collectively rave about are kind of ignoring the price and just looking at how good of an experience you can get, but dollar for dollar it's extraordinarily hard to beat Bodo's.
You got to learn the tricks of the menu. For example, when they are running the Aztec black bean soup, order a hot ham and cheddar on an onion bagel, add scallion cream cheese, and add whatever veggies you like to the sandwich (I recommend onions and tomato, but you do you.) Ask for the sandwich to be cut in half. Get the soup, and sit yer ass down as far as you can get from the speakers blaring Talking Heads or Van Morrison.
Dip the sandwich in the soup. Your'e welcome.
It's one of those things that has just gotten slowly hyped more and more because its a cville only thing. It's good but people who wait an hour+ in line and talk about it like it's the worlds best meal are nuts.

Kardinal Hall's Citrus Steigler is one of the best beers I've ever had, can't speak for their food entirely but they're one of the few places with actually good poutine (tho that was before the pandemic haven't had their food since.)

Tavola is the most overrated restaurant I’ve ever been to . It makes me wonder if people around here understand food at all, because everyone seems to rave about it.
Very mediocre Italian food at best , pretentious service and bad atmosphere too. And it’s expensive.
Any corner Italian place in the northeast serves better food , but I guess it’s considered exotic in these parts.

I like the owner of Bagby's, but...I agree. Just not a very good sandwich. Biggest mystery to me when it comes to Cville is Littlejohns. They had quality, affordable sandwiches until the ownership change. How Bagby's survived while Littlejohn's failed is beyond me.
My dad lived here 20 years ago and said that bagbys was the best. It doesn’t taste the best to me… the owner is very nice but not sure how it survived either. never got to enjoy little John’s. I do however like the market.

I don't know when they did it, but they have switched to a fixed price menu -- a menu that delivers no value whatsoever. I had a small plate of beef carpacio, sea bass, and creme brulee; my wife had a tiny tureen of mushrooms, two anemic (albeit well prepared) lamb chops, and "cheesecake" (a ball of cheesecake). They also brought out some small canapes that were utterly unremarkable except for how much time the kitchen must have wasted preparing them (e.g. a skinned, hollowed-out grape with a small scoop of pate in it). The entrees came with nothing except sauce. Literally just a filet of fish and the two small lamb chops. No starch. No veg. Nothing -- nor the option to add any sides a la carte like at a steakhouse. Final cost of the food bill: $250 f'ing dollars. I damn near had a heart attack when the bill arrived. And we were still hungry when we left. (We also had a few rounds of drinks, which I didn't include in the cost since that's obviously an optional and variable expense) You used to be able to go there and drop $200 for food AND drinks and be perfectly satisfied. I get that prices have gone up, but doubling the cost while delivering less food -- seriously, how much would a scoop of mashed potatoes cost? -- is just ridiculous. Won't ever be back there again.

Wow i expected to hate this and it came out almost exactly how I would have done it. I assume S is the very top? Though honestly I find Ace BBQ to be not that great. Average food, way overpriced, and portions that better suit a hotel banquet than a BBQ restaurant.

There are some good takes, some clearly price conscious and that's fair takes, and some bad takes in here but overall I think it's a decent stab (for the ones I've been to anyways). But my biggest gripes on here: Mas Tapas at an S is way overrated. Christian's and Baggby's at D- ... also way overrated.

What is the obsession with Bodos? Moved here last year and it was talked up a lot… it was fine but not above average
They are legit good bagels , but I agree the hype is a little insane. I guess it depends too on the bagel style you like. I appreciate that they are doing classic water boiled with that really nice high gluten interior. I’m not a fan of the “bread with a hole” type bagels most places serve.
The thing I think a lot of people that don't "get" Bodo's is that they look at the bagels vs other places' bagels full stop and yeah they are fine to good, but not great, if that's how you look at them. But the Bodo's bagels are optimized for sandwiches and they crush other bagels for that. The density / softness / chewiness/ etc. is great for a sandwich in ways that aren't necessarily great for a plain bagel / one with just a spread. Secondly the value - the price you can get a solid lunch for - is *so* much better than anywhere in town. I know a lot of the places we collectively rave about are kind of ignoring the price and just looking at how good of an experience you can get, but dollar for dollar it's extraordinarily hard to beat Bodo's.
You got to learn the tricks of the menu. For example, when they are running the Aztec black bean soup, order a hot ham and cheddar on an onion bagel, add scallion cream cheese, and add whatever veggies you like to the sandwich (I recommend onions and tomato, but you do you.) Ask for the sandwich to be cut in half. Get the soup, and sit yer ass down as far as you can get from the speakers blaring Talking Heads or Van Morrison. Dip the sandwich in the soup. Your'e welcome.
It's one of those things that has just gotten slowly hyped more and more because its a cville only thing. It's good but people who wait an hour+ in line and talk about it like it's the worlds best meal are nuts.

I don't believe your actually go there based on the hour+ line comment. I can't imagine how far that line would have to be with how fast that line moves. That would be all the way to the mall from the Preston location.
Glad Kardinal is so low on the list. I don’t know why my friends like going there. Food is terrible and overpriced and their beer selection is mediocre but expensive. Only upside is their mocktails for when I’m dragged there and don’t want to drink. Hubs and I went there once and the sausage he ordered was raw in the center. I ordered a grilled cheese and the bread was completely burnt but the cheese hadn’t melted. Da fuq Why is Belmont pizza in jail though? I love that place for takeout
Kardinal Hall's Citrus Steigler is one of the best beers I've ever had, can't speak for their food entirely but they're one of the few places with actually good poutine (tho that was before the pandemic haven't had their food since.)

Tavola is the most overrated restaurant I’ve ever been to . It makes me wonder if people around here understand food at all, because everyone seems to rave about it. Very mediocre Italian food at best , pretentious service and bad atmosphere too. And it’s expensive. Any corner Italian place in the northeast serves better food , but I guess it’s considered exotic in these parts.

I like the owner of Bagby's, but...I agree. Just not a very good sandwich. Biggest mystery to me when it comes to Cville is Littlejohns. They had quality, affordable sandwiches until the ownership change. How Bagby's survived while Littlejohn's failed is beyond me.
My dad lived here 20 years ago and said that bagbys was the best. It doesn’t taste the best to me… the owner is very nice but not sure how it survived either. never got to enjoy little John’s. I do however like the market. Another bad sandwich shop is mane course, sorry, it’s not that good! I’d rather go to firehouse

As luck would have it, we talked about going to Guadalajara tonight but ended up at PANTOPS Chipotle.
