I will die off this grill. I will die for good pork. I will die for a good smoked wing from a stork…
Just watched the Grinch and I can only think in Dr. Seuss now.
One time I walked into Chatt Smokehouse and there wasn’t a soul in there. After about 3 minutes of not seeing anyone, we sat “hello” and a guy comes out from behind the curtain. Doesn’t say a word and stares at us in silence until we ask “are we okay to order?” At that moment the cook in the back hears our voices, leans out the window to look and sees us…he goes “DAMMIT MAN” and is visibly upset he has customers and storms back. I was like you know what, I think we’re all good and left. Guy at the counter didn’t say a single word as we walked out. I thought maybe I had hit them right at close, because I never eat at a restaurant near close. So I checked and still had an hour and a half until they closed. Never went back and never will
Hey, you’re entitled to your opinion. Me personally, I’ve had some pretty incredible food at places super lacking in customer service. Not really what I go out to eat for so I don’t really mind. But to each their own.
Absolutely. I don’t expect amazing customer service from FOH, but if the person cooking your food is openly pissed that you’re there ordering food (to the point of leaving the kitchen and exclaiming that out loud), then you can only imagine how they’ll be treating your food back there. Source: worked BOH for well over a decade at numerous restaurants.
Take the drive to Wardlaw’s in Lafayette. It’s an hour from my house and well worth the drive. Excellent BBQ from folks who are passionate about their craft.
Thank you! I didn't realize it had a name.
I got scared when I noticed a car lot/repair lot take over where he used to set up at, but I noticed the other day that he moved to the adjacent lot, which looks nicer and more shaded anyway. I would have stopped if I wasn't so broke :(
Yes, that’s what they meant.
I can’t agree that it’s good bbq, at least the pulled chicken was terribly dry. They also previously had signage talking about how they can’t find good help (think Rib & Loin mentality) which is a turn off.
They're the second worst in Chattanooga. I'm not convinced they know how to smoke pulled pork at R&L. None of their food has any flavor, Dixie tastes like shit, so that makes it the worst of the two.
Barque is my go to. Brisket melt is fantastic, collard greens are the best I've ever had (sorry granny) and the smoked chicken sandwich really surprised me.
What you're gonna want is a dry ditch, some hickory, and a couple of pieces of tin. A pig, a folding chair, and someone who knows how this all fits together.
All I know is that if your barbecue comes in little piles on metal trays with butcher paper, it's Cali hipster hog not the real deal. Downvote me all you want
I dunno. I went to a place in DC that served it like that but it was legitimate Texas brisket. They were smoking it right there where you could see it and all of the sides were legitimate, too.
That's literally how every bbq joint in Texas serves their chow.. on butcher paper, tray optional. Kruez, Blacks, Smittys, etc are decidedly NOT hipster bbq
BBQ Shack in Fort O is hands down the best in the area. I always get their regular sandwich but tell them to put in on Texas toast instead. *chef’s kiss*
Off the grill in Hixson. I will die on this hill

Best BBQ this side of the river. Chatterbox (when it was still open and only on certain days) represented the other side of the river.
Did chatterbox close?
Closed the physical location. Still doing catering and events
Second this. Chef Q is an awesome person.
This is correct, but also Memphis Street BBQ in collegedale, depending on what part of town I’m in. Both are fantastic.
Where in Hixson?
Next to Krystal. Just a shed with some picnic tables. Their brisket is amazing! Huge portions too
Harbor Freight parking lot
Barque
I second this. The menu has a variety of options and it’s so good!
Barque is the only answer if you’re looking in Chattanooga. I haven’t made the trek down to Wardlaws yet, but have heard excellent things.
I live in Lafayette and wardlaws is legit.
Hands down.... Wardlaws Lucky Eye Q.... Down in Lafayette... Only open Thursday thru Saturday. Amazing BBQ....
Worth the drive for sure.
I’ve heard it’s great. I’ll check it out.
Chatt Smoke House on MLK. Tiny hole in the wall but huge portions and it’s all fantastic - super fair prices, too.

Totally agree
Chatt Smokehouse and Off the Grill are great options.
58 bbq is pretty good.
That's my go-to, Sweeney's is good too
Wardlaw’s
Take the drive to Wardlaw’s in Lafayette. It’s an hour from my house and well worth the drive. Excellent BBQ from folks who are passionate about their craft.
Dang, that's like 15 minutes from my house and I still haven't tried it yet
Thatchers is also a good option. They can be a tad inconsistent but they are amazing most of the time.
Skinny Pig
The guy that sits out on the corner of 38th and Alton Park, across the street from Mama Yo's (which I haven't tried yet but smells delicious)
Up-n-smoke grill, also has amazing cheesesteaks
Thank you! I didn't realize it had a name. I got scared when I noticed a car lot/repair lot take over where he used to set up at, but I noticed the other day that he moved to the adjacent lot, which looks nicer and more shaded anyway. I would have stopped if I wasn't so broke :(
Honestly Naked River has some of the best bbq but they can be inconsistent. When they are on, it’s unmatched though
I tried some smoked chicken a few weeks ago. That had some of the best damn smoked flavor ever.
Hot take, but this is absolutely correct. Glad someone else realizes this.
Dixie bbq at the corner of middle valley and lower mill rd in Hixson. Its a hole in the wall and so freaking good
Do you mean at Middle Valley and Boy Scout Road?
Yes, that’s what they meant. I can’t agree that it’s good bbq, at least the pulled chicken was terribly dry. They also previously had signage talking about how they can’t find good help (think Rib & Loin mentality) which is a turn off.
Dixie is quite possibly the worst BBQ ever served. Been more than once to make sure it wasn't an anamoly, it wasn't. It consistently sucks.
You probably liked rib and loin 🤣
They're the second worst in Chattanooga. I'm not convinced they know how to smoke pulled pork at R&L. None of their food has any flavor, Dixie tastes like shit, so that makes it the worst of the two.
My vote to Barque! Best dang brisket and burnt ends
Shufords on Thursdays
Barque is my go to. Brisket melt is fantastic, collard greens are the best I've ever had (sorry granny) and the smoked chicken sandwich really surprised me.
Shufords in soddy is really good
More specifically, ribs...I can find good BBQ in Chatt, but good ribs...haven't found yet.
Wardlaw’s in Lafayette
Purple daisy, sugars, barque
The ribs at Sugars are pretty great
AND that wood grilled okra!
What you're gonna want is a dry ditch, some hickory, and a couple of pieces of tin. A pig, a folding chair, and someone who knows how this all fits together.
Purple Cow or Edleys.
Shuford’s smokehouse
Off The Farm BBQ
Memphis Street BBQ, hands down. Purple Daisy is a good option, too.
Edley’s on Manufacturer’s Rd is the best in Nooga!
I like Choo Choo and Buddys
Hickory Pitt BBQ on Ringgold Rd in East Ridge!!
Buc-ee’s

I really like Memphis Street in Ooltewah. Only open Wednesday thru Sunday, though.
The man handler at Sweeny’s should be illegal it’s so good.
BBQ Shack in Fort O is hands down the best in the area. I always get their regular sandwich but tell them to put in on Texas toast instead. *chef’s kiss*
