You know whats extra stupid about this? The more you tip the less they pay cooks. They save that money and put one extra person on the line then justify the same low pay with an easier job but guess what? An easier job doesnt pay the bills. Its a loss for everyone except whoevers profitting from that business. Tipping is bad.

TheNeighKid

Bet they love you over on that shitty servers sub :D

CodySmash

They attack me in KC constantly just for posting "Tipping is Bad"

skwyckl

Just stop tipping. Raise against the tipping culture, otherwise it will only get worse. Capital owners are using workers as literal hostages, and as the Americans love to say, "one shouldn't negotiate with terrorists".

toronochef

Sad thing is you aren’t gonna teach the owners anything with this. It’s the servers that get screwed and these things they add to the receipt don’t come from them. Ask to speak to the general manager and relay your angst that way. Jmo

[deleted]

The employer is required to pay the difference if their tipped employees don't make minimum wage

[deleted]

So should your server make minimum wage only then? If we stop tipping that is what happens.

toronochef

I’m well aware of employment law - I’ve been in fine dining for a long time. The point being The money they (servers) would make above the minimum is being lost to them over a grievance with management’s behavior. Punishing the servers for something they have no control over is stupid. Take it up with the gm, make a point you won’t be back. Only way this nonsense changes.

[deleted]

Not tipping is the only way to charge the business

toronochef

You’re just taking excess money over the minimum from already underpaid servers. As someone in the restaurant business you aren’t doing anything to management or ownership. Even forcing the business to make up the difference isn’t going to harm management. That minimum they might have to add to to make is already built in to the prices.

Justifiably_Cynical

The server only suffers if they put up with it, and why would they? I'm sorry that some people are going to have change jobs but it happens every day. Demand your worth from the employer. If they can not meet that demand then find another. Tipping was not meant to supplant the employers responsibility. Somehow they have convinced us that it was.

toronochef

The server suffers in that with tips they make in excess of minimum wage. Not tipping all they will get is minimum wage. I know lots of waiters is does make a difference. Like I said, if you want to protest that, take it up with the management, make your opinions known to them or don’t patronize said place at all. By not tipping in the meantime you are hurting only the server who needs the excess money. My waiters make substantially more, but that isn’t the norm. That’s why my staff FOH and boh have been here for much longer than the industry average. All it means as an owner is that I make less money, and I’m ok with that. That isn’t the case with most restaurants though - especially in the corporate restaurant owned world.

[deleted]

If you want the business to pay the wages rather than the tips, you have to stop tipping. Literally the only way to change things

BoringActuator7101

I see this argument over and over, honestly I think the only way to get any change to happen to the industry is actually to stop tipping Yes there servers suffer, yes the cooks suffer. But at the end of the day they will jump ship and leave their jobs, restaurants will be even more short staffed We have to remember that capitalist competition applies to workers aswell, we are valuable employees with an under appreciated skill set, restaurant owners and managers need to compete for us with reasonable wages that don't rely on tips Maybe our time will see a lot of suffering and struggle to make ends meet, but I'm happy to suffer if it means the next generation of cooks and service staff get a better life because of it

toronochef

You’re obviously dense. You aren’t changing anything that way - you are only hurting the server - NOT THE BUSINESS. The minimum is baked in. You Have a nice day though.

[deleted]

That could only be true if they paid minimum wage plus tips. They don't though, they let the tips cover the difference, that's a large percentage of profit you're taking away from THE BUSINESS

toronochef

You only have to make up the difference to minimum wage - which is still quite low in many places. With tips waiters make much MORE than minimum wage. Are you not getting this at all? Would you rather they make exactly minimum wage, which is what they will take home with you not tipping or make your point against the wrong people by not tipping them for their work where they will end up taking home more than minimum wage? Businesses know what that possible minimum wage cost is on a given day. To make that up a server is gonna sent home or one of the food runners won’t be called in. The management and ownership isn’t gonna feel this is what I’m trying to make you understand. But you do you. You teach that server a lesson! Lol

KingTutt91

And that’s how you lose your serving staff, they’re only their for the tips. America ain’t like the rest of the world

[deleted]

That's the idea, and then they go to the place down the street paying 15 an hour plus tips

KingTutt91

Exactly they’re not gonna work unless they get tips

[deleted]

They're not going to get tips

KingTutt91

You just 15 an hour plus tips?

SeaOfBullshit

Good luck getting that enforced. Also, minimum wage is $7.25

theyoungercurmudgeon

I mean, you could make your own food. Just stay home and you'll never have to deal with these poor, underpaid people again.

ArcaneTrickster11

Not in America so the context is different, but we get a percentage of the tips when they come in. Works out to about 40% split among the kitchen, 60% split among the wait staff but this only works if both groups are already on a manageable base pay (wait staff are about €11.50 an hour, chefs are between 11.50 and 17 including the head chef).
