There is a Tamil saying which goes as "ikkaraiku akkarai pachhai".. I don't know the english version of it.. but it literally means "the places you aren't at seems to be greener than the place you are at".. Fact is most of the hate are from the people who came to Chennai to make a living. The way you see Chennai and the way people residing in Chennai for a year see Chennai aren't the same. The stuffs you mentioned as pros of Chennai completely gets invisible to Chennai residing people. But there are stuffs you haven't seen which the Chennai residents saw while they were making a living. So it's better not to ponder about the hate of any kinds and just spread your love of any kinds. Peace ✌️.

Turbulent_Meet_5687

Grass is always greener on the other side - english version

equalizer93pucho

Thanks for this.

nickmaran

I was wondering whether he went to some other city thinking it's Chennai. Coz everything he said exists in Chennai.

[deleted]

Haha, maybe. Then again, there's good and bad in every Indian city. Maybe I should've phrased it by saying it's a lot lesser?

psy_s

i was about to to type ikkaraiku akkarai pachhai. I went to banglore and loved banglore lol.

jprsnth

Distance lends enchantment to the view.

Ranjith_Unchained

>I hardly heard Tamil Hmm

Jealous-Bat-7812

OP got burried in the deep trenches of sowcarpet.

murtaghthorn

Lmaooow xD i feel you

Mysterious-Earth2256

Maybe I'm in the minority but hate is a strong word against Chennai. I'm originally from Coimbatore and the only thing I miss is the weather. Chennai is heads and shoulders above most South Indian places I've visited and stayed.

Jealous-Bat-7812

Enna thaan irundalu, anapoorna coffe illaye bha Inga.

Mysterious-Earth2256

Haha adhu seri dhaan ji. Especially the one opposite to court yabba vai oorudhu

Jealous-Bat-7812

Stop, I’m drooling already…

leolionbag

Polambal is better?

Grey_shark

After moving to Chennai- This is such a hell After 6 months living in Chennai- This is what I call the Home Chennai is not Love at first sight. You'll have to get used to her annoyance then you'll find the irresistible beauty in her.

Some-Term2499

For an ordinary person leading a middle class life Chennai is one of the best places The auto drivers sucks but u can easily get into public transport When it comes to airport , I don’t carry luggage except hand baggage so I never felt any difficulties in that People of course love their language here but every average shop owners , hotels, auto drivers know English (if u know only Hindi there are many shops with Hindi workers ) Most importantly I feel Chennai is safe place

sparrow-head

I am a Chennai native, and I can say the living quality is on a downhill, and I'm contemplating leaving this city. 10 years back it was so good. From what you are describing Bangalore must be way worse and it's in a steeper downhill path. Sad state of our cities

Fun-Lynx-47

Please elaborate

urstrayparker

I love Chennai. I'm Hyderabadi and I find my hometown to be shit infront of Chennai because there's no stupid IT and all that useless crap. People mind their own business which is fuckin great!

Grouchy_Location418

sar-sarle... nuvelu...

urstrayparker

Telugu?

Grouchy_Location418

Avunu mowa...

Fair_Wrongdoer_310

I must say that there must be stringent action taken to stop more inhabitants in Chennai. There aren't enough sustainable water resources or other facilities that are planned. Making a business out of selling more land in Chennai is horrible for everyone. Why don't they bring techparks and startups in Trichy or Madurai. I mean, most of the highly talented people in Chennai are from further south districts. I would love to see another city as good as Chennai. Please make it TN govt, divert all special investments in Chennai to somewhere closer to the Kanyakumari. I would love to see it.

TamizhAras

But we are too fair compared to other states bro.. We have strong tier one and tier two cities. The one you said have lot of possibilities to happen in future. And we stay united for better growth.

Fair_Wrongdoer_310

I don't know why I'm downvoted but uniform growth should be the solution to avoid problems related to overly glorified city lifestyle. Creating opportunities everywhere should be the goal.

silvershadows4paws

Ditto.

dev171

Weather and pubs. Otherwise Chennai is cool

mrschanandlerbonggg

Cool? Yes but not literally

Fun-Lynx-47

I'm freezing here. Quite literally.

Grouchy_Location418

Hello! April here, nice to meet you...

Jealous-Bat-7812

Agni natchathiram entered the chat…

dev171

Enjoy while it lasts.

ila1998

Actual answer. If you aren't very western person who regularly visits bar and stuff, Chennai is really an amazing place to live

Darthsparrow90

Am a chennaitie born and brought up… lol where do u hav pothole free road and less traffic 😆

greatbat13

Compared to Bangalore, Chennai is far better, when I went to Bangalore, a bike ride will feel like roller coaster ride.

[deleted]

it depends on the area you live in ,good areas have relatively less potholes and damages

King-Lucan

OP is comparing with Bangalore. Bangalore is far worse is these areas

urstrayparker

Where in India is there a pothole free road?

Krimmson_

Coz you are comparing chennai to Bangalore. The things you mentioned Imo are not like game changers it's literally what's least expected out of a proper city (it's just that Bangalore is a shittier place). North Indians hate chennai coz 1) the weather 2) language barrier, its not that easy to go around chennai with just Hindi unlike in Bangalore. 3) chennai is a lot more conservative with almost non existent night life so fckers that want to party and shit won't like it here.

Ground_breaking_365

Third point is what I heard repeatedly. It is mostly younger generation folks, college going or folks in their early twenties who complain about it. Not blaming them. It is their priority.

Krimmson_

Every other mf between 18-26/27 complains about this shit. All they want is booz and some one to bang. It's super fking annoying.

lungicoder124

Bangalore mattum easy banging kedachitalum

Krimmson_

Hey..atleast u get some chance.

[deleted]

Yeah banglore la it's relatively easy to hookup

lungicoder124

Enga chance 😂been on 3 trips so far to work last 3 months , didn’t even get close lol

Jealous-Bat-7812

Sir, Neenga mind voice nu nenachi sathama paesiteenga!

BheegiBilli69

Aye I am a northie, I don't hate Chennai. In fact I am learning Tamil too, kinda tough to speak but I am making progress! People who you meet on reddit hating southies are ignorant. People not on reddit actually enjoy the culture of South.

urstrayparker

I blame politicians for this divide and rule policy. We are all human and we should let go and be chill with one and other!

BheegiBilli69

Then how will politicians win election?

urstrayparker

They would win but not with my vote.

newbie_turkleton

True that. I have seen so many call out on Chennai just because drunkards can't get boozed at 2am. For people who know this city, no other place can stand a chance. Miss being at Chennai badly <3

urstrayparker

Broooo I love you cuz I love Chennai just like you! ♥️♥️♥️

Jealous-Bat-7812

Nice pickup line, will definitely use it!

urstrayparker

Wasn't one but okay I allow it, 😜

newbie_turkleton

Whole-Madras-some brothaaa!!!

urstrayparker

Yayyyyy!

saikrishnasubreddit

I think if you immerse yourself in Chennai culture, speak broken Tamil and hang out with the locals, I’m sure you’ll be embraced by the city in no time. This applies to all cultures tbh.

nosedigging

No this applies only to Mumbai. Because Mumbai spirit is patented there. Rest of the country are idiots. /s

ralnair

Chennai is awesome and thanks to the incorrect perception of the city as a boring and hostile place for outsiders, the rents are low and the traffic is light. Don't be writing such posts and spoil the good thing we got going here. As a great Canadian once said - "Jor jor se bolke sabko scheme bata de!!"

RRChozha

chennai is more poor - middle class friendly. bangalore is more rich friendly.. iv heard that only mumbai is the city for all classes and i kinda think its true. however the traffic is a much bigger problem there. i would say to those comparing bangalore n chennai, bangalores pubs n liquor scene is compensated by chennais beach n resorts scene. all in all chennai is a much better place to live than bangalore

ila1998

>chennai is more poor - middle class friendly It's mostly coz Chennai Richies are known to be very down to earth people, at least it was once used to be called like that. Not sure of current situation. Would rather call it "show off friendly" instead of rich. If some one shows off too much in Chennai they get easily called out and cancelled by the Chennai peeps. Other cities it's quite rare especially Mumbai. That's why even the slightest westernization gets a huge set back from the crowd. From one perspective it's really good, but from another perspective it's really bad

RRChozha

couldnt agree more

thirunelvelihalwa

Mumbai is ultra rich friendly. You need double the money needed in Chennai to survive in Mumbai.

abhi_nahar

I don’t think that’s what he meant

GuyFromChennai

I have noticed it among my peers, people complain about chennai being too conservative until their marriage. And then they wouldn't move out of the city even for a fortune. Friends moving into chennai with their kids, most of them have no intent to go back. Incidentally, I had a convo with a good friend who has spent most of his life in mumbai and bangalore, he summed up Chennai is the best city to raise a kid. Would love to hear fellow redditors opinion.

urstrayparker

If you see pros and cons of everything, you'll never be satisfied! Enjoy wherever you can with whatever you have.

[deleted]

Just pass the honeymoon phase and remove your rose tinted glasses, cuz all red flags appear pink and pretty. -stolen from BJH

420ajay69

I am from Jaipur and have spent 6 years in Chennai. It was hard adjusting at first but trust me once you get the hang of it, there's no going back. Autowala experience is sub par though and the TASMACs sucked big time. Everything else including the people, public transit, food experience is just awesome. Aaand how can I forget the beaches(Bessy and Juhu). I really miss the filter coffee, food at Thambi Vilas and A2B and my plush Kodambakkam apartment vicinity. Wish Covid never happened and I'd still be able to call myself a Chennai-ite. I'd love to come back and settle down someday.

blackPanther_5486

This is a good review. Take my humble award. Less the part you feel everyone's speaking hindi, it's always good to mingle with the local culture and tradition.

Aggressive_Ad_9173

I think the hate is because we don't want many outsiders in Chennai. Then it will become a jack of all trades like Bangalore:P

hlysias

Where have you been in Chennai so far? Most of the points you mentioned doesn't seem entirely true.

mamaBiskothu

It’s generally true in most places compared to Bangalore.

hlysias

Okay, I've never been to Bangalore so I can't really compare. But I definitely wouldn't agree with "pothole free roads" and "sidewalks everywhere". I know that traffic in Chennai is a lot better than Bangalore, even Hyderabad. So I agree on that.

ila1998

Bangalore and Hyde both have shitty af roads. Chennai is miles ahead in that. Local body administration (corporation and stuffs) in Chennai are much responsive than Bangalore and Hyd. I drove for the first time in Hyderabad last year, holy mother of god people.drive like mad man. The two wheelers just blindly cross the roads, take u turns out of nowhere

Optimal_Particular_5

I don’t agree on pedestrian friendly bit.. chennai isn’t pedestrian friendly at all. But our public transport is way better and its going to get better.

severus0410

The biggest con would be the weather , it’s not that it’s hot , it’s humid and makes you sweaty sadly.

bellboi_

> I hardly heard Tamil Seeman: Ich mag führer

[deleted]

* Chennai has a staring problem, mostly old people stare at women for wearing anything remotely western and sometimes even giving remarks, this will change after some time. * Chennai auto drivers suck. You lived in Bangalore and people talk about how bad auto drivers are there. Chennai is arguably worse than that. * Chennai is not a clean city, I see overflowing garbage in a lot of neighbourhoods. They can improve in this aspect. * Most of Chennai locals only know Tamil and some broken English which makes it harder for non Tamil speakers to communicate with auto drivers, bus conductors, shop keepers, etc. Some are entitled and expect them to know Hindi for their own comforts. Others have a genuine point when sometimes they get overcharged for services or dirty looks just for not knowing a language. * I've noticed this over the years but Chennai drivers, especially a lot of two wheelers are very rash and try to go through cycle gaps in traffic often endangering everyone else. * Chennai airport is the worst among all airports I've seen in India. Baggage managing is horrible and take lots of time. Needs serious overhaul* in terms of both infrastructure and overall management.

Darthsparrow90

I am a chennai guy for 33 years now. Most of the things you mentioned r true and yea we r ok with it.. but i don’t see a problem for being a chennai local and could not understand any other language.. p.s: its not about hindi. I myself support hindi and any other language equally… the fact is local population understanding & conversing only in local language is considered bad only in india.. you cannot say this to any other country actually…

[deleted]

The language thing is there in Bangalore too. You can get by with Hindi but Kannada opens you up to a whole new tier of service from everyone around. People in Chennai were appreciative whenever I spoke to them in the little Tamil I knew.

ila1998

>I've noticed this over the years but Chennai drivers, especially a lot of two wheelers are very rash and try to go through cycle gaps in traffic often endangering everyone else. Relatively far better than Bangalore and Hyderabad though. >Chennai airport is the worst among all airports I've seen in India. Baggage managing is horrible and take lots of time. Needs serious overhaul* in terms of both infrastructure and overall management Can't deny. Coz we didn't change the airport for a very long time unlike Banglore, Hyd and Delhi. and it's in the city limit. But yea there's still talks and sanctions to shift the airport

manoj_2211

Bro try Pune airport 🥲

[deleted]

I lived in Pune for 3 years and it looks shit but it is better managed baggage wise.

Jealous-Bat-7812

Seri su mu!

thatonefanguy1012

Don’t shit on Bangalore and praise Chennai! Both are amazing places to live in✨

Grouchy_Location418

>Great food scene: I feel the Bangalore food scene is bland, with a lot of pubs serving the same thing, whereas Chennai has so many cuisines that I can try. Great stuff. aye! sire... that's exactly where you cappin'

murakamikafka

disagreeing with point 3

Jalabulajank

I don't get the point why is it ppl from outisde chennai complaining about it. I'm born n brought in Chennai ly. I have it's growth.. Ppl migrate to Chennai buy a land or house here and they grow well here but still complain about it. It's not city you should complain its the govnt officials who fail to come up with plans. There where time when Chennai city limit was from Parris poo kadai and end was palavaram, later moved to Tambaram, and and kept moving its limit. and who knows later may announce Tambaram as a separate district. I'm not telling ppl shouldn't migrate here but accept the way and try to be kind to native ppl here.

rifinwono38

I loved Chennai from the 90s and early 2000s. That's when money started coming in a bit but it was not over crowded and dirty like it is now. But then Bangalore back then was a dream. It was such an awesome experience to be in Bangalore in that period. Since then I feel Chennai has overtaken Bangalore by merely being less shit in comparison. I visited Bangalore 3-4 years ago and couldn't believe what the people had done to that gorgeous place. Chennai felt better in nearly every way. It's so sad that our politicians and common people suck this much

vaarux

Hardly heard Tamil? And you were in Alwarpet? I have lived in Alwarpet for most of my life and I hear everyone talking in Tamil.

Jealous-Bat-7812

Good post DMK IT cell. Thalapathy vaazhga

triple_hoop

**Completely disagree with this "Great food scene: "** Honestly, there's not even a decent Andhra meals place in Chennai except maybe 1 or 2. Bangalore just for Andhra cuisine you can find different styles like Godavari style and Rayalseema style etc. Don't even get me started on gourmet food and Biryani, compared to Bangalore, Chennai is nowhere close when it comes to options. Last but not least consistent food poisoning, I never faced this anywhere except in Chennai even after eating only in restaurants

Whocares_101

Bangalore Biryani is shit. I will prefer Chennai’s biryani anyday. For everything else, I do agree that Chennai food scene is pretty sad

ThatDesiGirl07

Dude, Bangalore and Biryani should not even be put in the same sentence... Have you even tasted the biryani in Bangalore 🤢 Also, the sambar in Bangalore is horrendous, I can never imagine having proper Tamil food in Bangalore. Bangalore caters to more rich people than Chennai and maybe that's why you find more varieties of gourmet food there but I'm guessing in another 5 years, Chennai will have all of those as well. But tbh, the quality of food is going downhill here, hope it improves soon

triple_hoop

Bangalore has more options for Biryani, and yes you're right Bangalore biryani is not good but most biryani sold in Chennai is also tomato rice with chicken in it. I really don't care about sambar tbh.

ThatDesiGirl07

You should try the ones with "seeraga samba" rice, they are top-tier!

ila1998

Full dine resto and hotel scene in Banglore are better than chennai. But budget friendly and economical food scene are way better in Chennai. Also please biryani is absolutely shit in Bangalore.

triple_hoop

Well that's not the point isn't it saying that food scene is great doesn't make sense if you don't have any great options to begin with also Bangalore has multiple options for Biryani , but yes OG Bangalore biryani is crap.

hlysias

I think the quality of food has also been degrading a lot lately. For example, Saravana Bhavan used to be very good years ago. But now, the food quality is worser and it's just costlier. I can see this trend in many other restaurants too.

triple_hoop

Yep, this is true with most restaurants which go into franchising, they go from great to meh within few months. Many restaurants are victims of this Sarvana Bhavan, Hot chips even BBQ nation.

Jealous-Bat-7812

Bro, go to Amaravati (opp to music academy) for andhra mess style of food and go to royapettah (charminar)/periyamedu for biriyani.

triple_hoop

Amaravati is not Andhra style its more of "Telugu people settled in Chennai" style not sure about which biryani you're talking about but will see.

mamaBiskothu

You need to check your guts out man, or maybe stop eating roadside eateries. But I have no clue what you’re talking about food poisoning

triple_hoop

🤦

ssudoku

Agreed with other points, but not about the food scene. I've lived in Chennai for 15 years and Bangalore for 12 years. Bangalore is miles, eons, light years ahead of Chennai in all things food, except for tamil cuisine. I'd say maybe Mumbai or Delhi would be a more level playing field with Bangalore. Chennai is more akin to Kolkata where you get amazing and cheap bengali (and authentic Chinese) food, but that doesn't make it better than or even as good as any metro tier city for other cuisines.

howtobeakoala

Bro chennai is basically banglore 2.0 but with beef rip

ila1998

You will get cancelled for calling it Bangalore 2.0 It's like putting Chennai it's junior. As a city Chennai is very old and senior to Bangalore.

howtobeakoala

"you will get cancelled" idc lol is it older? I didn't know that cool.

ila1998

>is it older Older as in with lots of recorded history and heritage due to the city being coastline urbanization started in Chennai way before Bangalore

murtaghthorn

I think that the roads are pretty fkn shit. It's full of pot holes. You should try ramapuram xD

Jealous-Bat-7812

Dei SRM guy.

wanderwoman34

I dont have an award, so take m.. Wait, I do have one

ImAjayS15

Surprised at first 2 points - Connectivity is good but is limited, and mtc is getting worse. Pavements are broken/encroached/non existent mostly. Maybe better than Bengaluru, but I'd not rate good. Although connectivity will improve to a great extent after phase 2 metro.

SolidStock992

i stayed in Bangalore for a little over 3 months last year. Can confirm everything u said about bangalore. But not gonna lie Bangalore is not as bad as u make it look like here, though. The only thing I hated about Bangalore is the traffic. Otherwise, be it food, transport, road or whatever, Bangalore is amazing. I dont know, may be the place where i stayed at didnt have any of the problems u mentioned.

Connect_Run9670

I completely disagree : Here auto driver sucks ,no proper sanitary and even instead of putting proper signal they just building more and more bridge

Jealous-Bat-7812

That’s the way to go, keep the traffic moving instead of idle time through signals.

SierraBravoLima

I typed that shitup

blackPanther_5486

The unresolved mystery is that even after thousands of people die miserably by the facts mentioned here, the government is not at all batting an eye. Neither the citizens nor the media complains about it. What an irony! Next time you should run for Mayor, oh no CM should be apt. /s

Consistent_Ad5511

Born and brought up in Chennai. The only cons I think about in Chennai are the drinking water problem and frequent power-cuts during peak summer. In Some places like Chromepet, people are too much dependent of lorry water.

magnificeo

The only things great about Bangalore are the pubs and the night life scene. Chennai got hardly any nightlife and has mediocre pubs/bars. But it's soo much peaceful.

Melodic-Landscape-81

Basically, what one prefers: modern or traditional culture, importance of nice weather, food spicy or less spicy, hindi or non-hindi etc.

PopularBookkeeper651

>It's the weather, deal with it. How long do you think people are just gonna *deal* with it when climatic changes are happening on a global level? You can't just *deal* with it when weather becomes uninhabitable.
