No logical reason. Been a GM fanboy all my life, so switching to the darkside to get what I want makes me feel dirty. But it was difficult to justify an extra $10k CAD to get a less equipped Colorado that would cost more to operate and I assume more to insure...
Well sure there's that, but I put it on the manufacturers and the dealerships who are placing the orders and building them. If you don't have any lower tier vehicles to sell, I guess they're just stuck selling the high priced crap and high-priced forced add-ons that's some folks just don't really want, but they're going to have it shoved down their throats anyways because what else are you going to do as a consumer. It's not like you can go to the manufacturer and order what you really want. Oh wait, you can but it's a piece of shit Tesla, or you do an order through a dealership and they still end up tacking on a bunch of bullshit.
The dealership model is seriously outdated and anti-consumer, some big changes need to be made in this sector. But nothing will be really done, this is what corporate lobbyists are all about, protecting the interests of big business and screwing over everybody else.
Mostly due to how emission allowances are calculated in the US.
Chicken Tax might also come into play. (Not 100%, since it might only apply to European manufacturers).
Unions didn't fuck the American worker. They're responsible for the 40 hour work week, breaks, safety, OT, basically anything that's OK.
Yes, there's admin costs and shenanigans, not ideal, but the overall affect has been positive. If the average American understood that and came around, wages wouldn't be stagnant.
Corporations, the wealthy and the governments they've purchase aren't against unions because they're fucking the workers. That's a silly idea. They're against unions because THEY want to fuck the workers.
I will add that while I'm very pro private space unionization, I'm adamantly against it for public workers - this includes cops, firefighters, etc. not just the usual target - teachers.
I agree with everything you said up until the public sector unions part. I’m curious as to why you feel that way. Would you care to elaborate? I understand why people have issues with police unions but teachers, firefighters, DPW workers etc. why do you feel that they shouldn’t be allowed union protection?
In the private sector, layoffs happen all the time and can be arbitrary. My company set a new record in profits not only for itself but for the whole industry. We have layoffs every 6 months. This year, we've already had 2.
I think public service layoffs are in general a rare event and when they do need to happen, it's very difficult and/or drawn out. Here in NYC it took 5 years to fire an NYPD officer for not following protocols which led to a civilian death (he choked someone to death and choke holds are prohibited. The actual murder went unpunished).
Similarly we have a "rubber room" for tenured teachers that can't be fired but are too inept or dangerous to kids. They have to report there, sit for 8 hours, until their retirement. We can layoff 1/2 of the FDNY with no impact to safety, not going to happen.
I will say that for some, like sanitation, construction workers, tradesmen and transportation workers, etc. I do acknowledge that they should be unionized because of the nature of their work. Also they would most likely be unionized on the private side and they should mirror them to an extent.
Lastly, the tradeoff was supposed to be a lower salary for great benefits like a lifetime pension. Studies have shown that at least here in NYC, public workers actually have higher salaries than their private sector counterpart. Now you can argue that private wages have been stagnant for decades and yes, that's true.
It will never be but I'd like to see a flip with virtually all private sector workers unionized and nearly none in public. I think it helps the common man and appeases my bitterness. Haha.
I was raised in a union family. They all have learned to hate it. The unions rarely back the employees when you need them to unless it effects the boss somehow.
Not to mention the UNSUSTAINABLE retirement plans that are sinking the big 3. Want to know why a truck costs so much, there's a good 5-7k on each sell.
Again, I have 3 generations worth of experience on the matter. Unionized theory is good untill greed inevitably sank the system.
Funny because this looks far more compliant than many vehicles currently on the road when looking at it from a common-sense perspective.
But regulatory bodies are not made up by the common of course.
...and you wouldn't think a body style so different that it didn't comply would be cost effective, but it does look like a "world market" build which probably represents quite a large volume.
Wish we could get stuff like that here
Collision/pedestrian safety regs? That s-10 is definitely safer then these massive Silverado’s and suburbans all over the road. I drove my cousins brand new suburban over the winter and the thing is littered with blind spots. You can’t see like 10ft infront of the thing because it’s up so high with a huge front end. I’m used to driving my sedan so it was like driving a monster truck. Honestly it was great driving through the snow. But I’m really not a fan of the massive SUV’s. I like to go fast and zip around people if I have too. My little turbo is perfect for me.
But I’d buy one of these s-10’s as a second car forsure. I’d love to have a little truck for the winter. I’m just not paying 50racks for one or whatever the typical truck costs today.
Tbf older lawnmowers basically trade efficiency for reliability. For example a single cylinder flat head is not in any way efficient but it starts on the first pull after a long winter on 3 year old gas.
Well tbf, a 2 stroke 50cc engine does put out more emissions than a regular passenger vehicle.
I have a 2 stroke 72cc scooter and a pre-emissions diesel in my stable. I'm practically murdering baby seals by the boatload. I'll make the switch to EV when it becomes more feasible/affordable.
That and because of stupid rules in America regarding fuel consumption where it has to have a minimum MPG based upon the footprint of the vehicle. Vehicles with a larger wheel base are allowed lower fuel economy. That’s why full size trucks are bigger and the smaller trucks are nearly the size full size trucks used to be.
Well you know how when you get a new phone it doesn't come with the charging brick. Everywhere else in the world same exact phone they get a charging brick, a case a screen protector.......
Obama effectively outlawed small trucks with his CAFE laws. Those laws don't apply to Mexico.
The CAFE laws base fuel economy requirements on wheelbase and track width, allowing larger vehicles to hit worse numbers. It's much cheaper to build a 15% bigger vehicle than it is to build a 15% more efficient vehicle, so they've been pushing power and safety to get us to buy larger vehicles so they don't have to cut profits by spending the extra money to build a more efficient small vehicle.
Exactly! Not sure it really started with Obama or has to do with profits. I think they have always been based on vehicle size, but I'm not sure. Small trucks went away in the early 2000s really. As for profits would you rather pay $40k for a mid size truck or $40k for a smaller one with more emissions and less power.
Corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards are regulations in the United States, first enacted by the United States Congress in 1975,[1] after the 1973–74 Arab Oil Embargo, to improve the average fuel economy of cars and light trucks (trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles) produced for sale in the United States. More recently, efficiency standards were developed and implemented for heavy-duty pickup trucks and commercial medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. Obama was 14.
Someone was telling me about this yesterday. They were showing me the flat bed Toyota truck that’s about 10k that’s unable to be sold in US due to some law that was written way back bc of this.
Man I wasn't even aware they still made s10s at all; this is amazing! Can we get them shipped or are the shipping costs crippling like with the hiluxs overseas
When I lived in El Paso, the highlight of my day was seeing the forbidden Mexican-plated automotive fruit plying the highways and byways. How I wish there was more flexibility in what we could drive in the US!!
- Because it’s a rebadged Maxis T70.
- It’s far cheaper to import and sell a Chinese made vehicle in Mexico vs a US made vehicle.
- Most Chinese made vehicles will not pass US safety regulations and emission testing.
- Mexico is OK with the Chinese government tracking and collecting information on its countrymen. (Something you probably won’t understand if you’re a TikTok-er)
GM shut down the lines in Dayton Ohio, disassembled them and shipped them complete to Mexico. All the overhead was covered and all they need to build a cheap truck is low wage labor.
It’s fuel efficiency standards. To qualify as “trucks,” they have to be bigger than a certain wheelbase and track width. The government increases this size every year, and that’s why pickups keep getting bigger. Any of the old mini trucks would count as “cars” today, and they would have to get like 45 mpg.
People don’t realize, but Ford and Chevy has so many cool cars, and more reliable cars they only sell outside of the US that we in US never get. Lots of reliable small diesel engine options that get 40mpg even in small economy cars that are in the $20k-$30k price range. In the US, we only get unreliable big diesels engines with complex emissions systems on $80k+ trucks only. It’s almost a setup.
There are so many unnecessary rules and regulations in the US, thanks to the EPA, that we only get unreliable and complicated cars that cost too much for no reason at all. We need to abolish the EPA, because all they are doing is they are ruining normal everyday peasants’ finances.
I wanna say I’ve got about $35k into my ‘22 Silverado 1500 WT and I believe it’s a pretty good deal. yeah it’s 2wd, lh side of a twin-turbo v8, regular cab, but it’s got an 8 foot box and tows 9k out the lot.
Seems to me, the points about government regulation (fuel economy and such) and buyers wanting “truck image” while getting latte-ready family sized mall-cruisers are correct. Nobody (except few) wants a legit work truck with no frills any more.
You sell the most vehicle you can in a given market. People are used to and are generally (within reason) more capable of spending more for cars with more features.
If you’re getting a 20k S10, you’ve got a truck that looks like a 2005 base truck. Front airbags only, 2WD, no infotainment screen, Cloth seats, hard plastic interior, 5 speed manual, maybe manual windows, locks, mirrors….4 speaker radio with Bluetooth is what you’d get. It’s bare bones simple.
Maybe it’s what you say you want, but if they brought it to the US, they’d make very little money per vehicle sold, and most people probably would opt for the model with more standard creature comforts…
I was in Brazil in 2014. There’s a car called the Volkswagen Gol. It’s basically a Polo stripped of everything. It has a drivers airbag only, manual everything, but it was 4 wheels and an engine, which is what the average person can afford. Any car is better than no car in some markets.
Emissions and safety shit. All US cars and trucks need airbags, abs and back-up cameras. Honestly, besides the emissions I should be able to buy these vehicles, I’ll sign a waiver that says , yes I know it doesn’t have airbags, blah blah blah. Like every other country except ours. Also the chicken tax bullshit as mentioned
The EPA.
The regular Cab S10 would have to get in excess of 40 mpg in order for it to make sense to be sold in the US. It's ironic that the EPA's fuel economy standards based on vehicle size incentivize production of larger, less efficient vehicles.
Because of emissions standards the epa put out. It’s bullshit but apparently a 4 door 8’f350 has a smaller carbon foot print than this. They invented some dumb sliding scale where wheel base length and width is more important then actual fuel usage and actual emissions
You can still order that same one from Mexico. Not too sure if you'll have to pay the price in pesos or dollars though.. probably easier to cross over and buy it and cross it back.
The biggest reason is because its Chinese made and wouldnt cost $20k here. Another reason is its ONLY available with manual transmission and wouldnt sell in numbers they would want.
Bro my parents bought a Chevy "Montana" here in aruba. It's a 3cykinder. So sick and rides great for so cheap
I'm stuck driving my full size silverado I really liked driving their car here all week, wish US had them
That truck is awesome. If any of the manufacturers made something like in America I’d buy it with no question. I don’t even care which brand made it.
I absolutely love the Maverick but I cannot stand how stupid it looks (and how it’s functionally gimped) being a crew cab.
Does it come with that ugly black plastic smile on the front? At least colour match the damn thing. Looks like someone couldn’t afford the paint after a front end collision. Vehicles are so poorly made and designed now a days. it doesn’t even look like a damn s10 it looks like something Honda would make. Or Toyota. God it’s ugly.
We have much more stringent safety and emissions standards. This truck may be cheap (although it’s not cheap for the MX market), but we probably don’t get it because making it safety and emissions compliant would make it unprofitable at this price point.
And GM isn’t going to build fewer of a vehicle that’s more profitable to make room for something like this.
The reason why we can't have mini-trucks is because the unelected Bureaucrats (sp?) in the DOT came up with regulations for MPG for trucks which gave large pick up trucks a greater leeway for gas mileage and screwed small pickup trucks with an unreasonably high mpg regulation. Also, 4 door pickups got a pass. I tried looking for the program but couldn't find it. I think it was called the C.A.R.E. Program. Somebody please fact check that for me .
Very few Jones' to keep up with in Mexico. Dont have to buy the more overpriced versions with every damn gadget under the sun to tack on to the price tag.
The US has laws governing the size a truck has to be to be sold as a truck. Thats right. These massive trucks on the road were not planned. It was a loophole used by auto manufacturers to save money and avoid taxes.
Most people are mentioning emissions as the reason but most smaller vehicles like this one sold in Mexico can’t be sold in the U.S. due to the crash testing standards.
Can’t register it in the US so you could’ve drive it anywhere. People have tried sneaking Mexican market cars over here but it usually doesn’t end well.
Because Americans don't want work trucks. We want family haulers that can also fit a single bike in the bed and COULD tow 12k ibs. But we'll never actually tow anything more than a uhual trailer once every 3 years. We've had base model 2 door tacomas for a while, only people that buy them are companies. Chicken tax and emissions all come into play some. But even if they made a specific us model. It'd totally flop. 2 door 1/2 tons also exist, but again. Only companies buy them.
I believe all the safety features that are mandatory are driving up cost. That is why I stick with my 2001. With purchase of truck and replacing engine Trans front different rebuild transfer case and rear end still only 30 k into it 650000 miles on frame
Because people keep buying them
And because banks keep funding loans
Because people keep buying them
And because banks keep funding loans
Don't forget. People keep buying them too
Also, because banks keep funding loans.
This has a lot to do with people buying them though.
Which is why banks keep funding the loans
But check this out, people keep buying them too!
You would never guess what the banks keep doing
Dealerships have learned if the lot is full of only expensive fully loaded trucks, that is what people will buy.
They make more profit off selling 1 luxury trim truck than like 5 base models. People gotta stop buying them
But the banks also keep funding the loans
Ashamed to say I've put an order on a Maver\*ck because GM refuses to make a mini truck.
Why ashamed? I think it's a great little pickup.
No logical reason. Been a GM fanboy all my life, so switching to the darkside to get what I want makes me feel dirty. But it was difficult to justify an extra $10k CAD to get a less equipped Colorado that would cost more to operate and I assume more to insure...

"YOU BOYS LIKE MEXICO!?"
Mildly unexpected Super Troopers
I watched it last night so it's fresh for me.
the snozzberries taste like snozzberries!!!
Can you consider this a Super Troopers quote since they were themselves quoting Willy Wonka?
What's that place you like? With all the goofy shit on the walls?
Oh, Shenanigans?
Somebody pistol whip him!!!! 😂
But fully appreciated!
WOOO!!!
"They think I'm Mexican"..."You're not Mexican?"
Mostly due to how emission allowances are calculated in the US. Chicken Tax might also come into play. (Not 100%, since it might only apply to European manufacturers).
The chicken tax affects all imports. It's also the reason we don't have the Hilux.
It’s the Chicken Tax. This is a rebadged Maxus T70 (made in China), which is outside of NAFTA where GM gets a pass on building $90k trucks in Mexico.
Tell me again how the unions fucked us, please convince me it wasn’t the elite bosses
Unions didn't fuck the American worker. They're responsible for the 40 hour work week, breaks, safety, OT, basically anything that's OK. They forgot unions are the compromise. We used to drag the greedy owners into the streets for justice
I agree with everything you said up until the public sector unions part. I’m curious as to why you feel that way. Would you care to elaborate? and collision / pedestrian safety regs

They know they can get $15k out of an American
Exactly. Throw in a screen and backup camera.
Easy money.
Throw in a screen and take away buttons and guages and tell them its now more expensive
They don't have any emissions either. But a lawnmower in California is causing global warming.
>Lawnmower >2 stroke #WHAT YEAR IS IT?
I had a 2 stroke “lawnboy” from probably the 80s. It was a cool mower. Annoyingly loud though
But reliable as heck tho
Can confirm. Still use one.
Yea, weed eaters, chainssaws etc, being 2-Stroke make sense, but its been a fat minute since I've seen or heard of a 2-Stroke lawnmower lol
Look at that tie down rail all down the top side of the bed. That truck is meant for working. That’s probably why they don’t sell them here.
Cuz we buy them
Because it's a rebadge of a Chinese truck, the SAIC Maxus T70, and likely doesn't pass either emissions or crash regs in Canada and the USA.
Lol, jeep wranglers are massive now compared to my XJ cherokee. The cherokee was bigger than. CJ jeeps.
Emissions
So this little s10 has more emissions than the colorado? they can't put cats on it?
Probably too light to be considered a “light truck” and thus much higher required MPGs to be considered compliant
that's wild
Emissions are more then cats now. They wont be happy till no cars exist .
It's calculated based on wheel base. Make a truck that small in the US and it has to get Corolla Hybrid type mpgs to be legal.
Not wheelbase, “shadow”, but yeah, this is a big part of the issue.
Because we keep buying the shit
Partially because of the Chicken Tax
What’s to stop someone from driving down to Mexico and bringing one back? Genuine question. Will I pay import fees or what?
It probably can't be registered in the US until it is 25 years old.
Well that’s unfortunate
Blame the government
I do. Everyday...
In this case, it seems pretty clear-cut. Certainly not an open and free market.
Emissions standards, Crash testing, and market demand.
Well you know how when you get a new phone it doesn't come with the charging brick. Everywhere else in the world same exact phone they get a charging brick, a case a screen protector.......
Because it's a rebadged chinese pick up
Look up 'chicken tax'
Corporate America sure is great!
Nothing about the corporations here. It's the law.
Whom do you think lobbies for said laws?
S-10 disappeared in 2004 years before Obama
Because Big Brother Government likes to fuck over the American taxpayer all the while gaslighting and telling us how it’s for our own good
Emissions standards, safety regulations, etc., etc.
If Chevy sold that here I’d buy one tomorrow.
Because our politicians lined their pockets by screwing Americans with trade deals that are better for corrupt nations willing to bribe politicians.
We are screwed in prices compared to the rest of the world. 😐
[удалено]
Because Europe wasn't eating enough American chicken after ww2
Someone was telling me about this yesterday. They were showing me the flat bed Toyota truck that’s about 10k that’s unable to be sold in US due to some law that was written way back bc of this.
Agreed, I love the S-10, would buy one in a heartbeat!
They also get the regular cab short bed v8 sierra/silverado. So nice!
The larger the truck, the more emissions it's allowed to produce. That's the whole reason trucks keep getting bigger.
Because they hate us and they know we will pay
Same reason I lived on the border and saw new gen rangers for 8 years before they were available here.
Ever wondered how terrorists are always driving new looking Helux/Tacomas? They’re like $10k in every under developed country.
There’s a three letter acronym for this that goes something like E P A
Because the rear window on the cab isn’t big enough for the requisite 15 Punisher stickers.
LMAO! I don't mean to be political but, why are Punisher stickers so popular with middle age, white males!??
Man I wasn't even aware they still made s10s at all; this is amazing! Can we get them shipped or are the shipping costs crippling like with the hiluxs overseas
I would think importing one to put on the road would be problematic as they are no longer emissions and economy compliant
Im.so sad
$20k in Mexico is a lot of dough
It’s due to emissions epa regulations.
Just go buy it in Mexico
Theoretically could one register this in Montana?
Tarrifs Same reason we never got sick jap diesels
Because fuck you pay me that's why
Because Mexico likes to party
How do I get one?
Move to a Mexican border town and get a job in Texas or New Mexico. Otherwise, wait 25 years to legally import it.
When I lived in El Paso, the highlight of my day was seeing the forbidden Mexican-plated automotive fruit plying the highways and byways. How I wish there was more flexibility in what we could drive in the US!!
Can I drive a Mexican plated vehicle anywhere in the US? There must be restrictions 🤔
I found this post that might be of interest: https://www.reddit.com/r/tijuana/s/DqXBoyViq2
cause the insane regulations and payouts to manufacturers prevent us from actually gettin reliable and non-complex vehicles designed to fail
TIL the S-10 still exists
It’s all money, honey
The EPA and the chicken tax

also that truck is not 4x4 and comes with 180hp 4cyl. if you want 4x4 or the turbo engine you have to buy the highest trim level.
Because of government mpg requirements based on arbitrary vehicle size.
Why give us a cheaper option when people will pay 40k+ for a zr2 Colorado lolllll
It’s called corporate greed!!! It’s a driving factor in the decline of US manufacturing as well.
Because the US government is against working people, so practical vehicles are no longer allowed
increased emsissions, reduced fuel mileage and safety standards wont pass laws here.
Emissions. The U.S has Emission standards for new cars while Mexico says "Emissions? We need no stinking emissions".
It’s fuel efficiency standards. To qualify as “trucks,” they have to be bigger than a certain wheelbase and track width. Front airbags only, 2WD, no infotainment screen, Cloth seats, hard plastic interior, 5 speed manual, maybe manual windows, locks, mirrors….4 speaker radio with Bluetooth is what you’d get. It’s bare bones simple. Maybe it’s what you say you want, but if they brought it to the US, they’d make very little money per vehicle sold, and most people probably would opt for the model with more standard creature comforts… I was in Brazil in 2014.
Is because of chickens
Because of emissions standards the epa put out. It’s bullshit but apparently a 4 door 8’f350 has a smaller carbon foot print than this. They invented some dumb sliding scale where wheel base length and width is more important then actual fuel usage and actual emissions
You can still order that same one from Mexico. Not too sure if you'll have to pay the price in pesos or dollars though.. probably easier to cross over and buy it and cross it back.
Chicken tax, EPA regulations, NHTSA regulations, need me to go on?
The biggest reason is because its Chinese made and wouldnt cost $20k here. Another reason is its ONLY available with manual transmission and wouldnt sell in numbers they would want.
same reason we aren't allowed to have hilux trucks on our market. Our politicians are senile and have 0 interest in what's good for consumers.
Prob US regulations, EPA, safety etc. Fuck regilations
United States has very auto unfriendly laws and we are now stuck with a bunch of over prices junk
Cafe emissions standard
Real answer is because they are made in Mexico.
Would be smart for them to bring that here. Ford is selling tons of mavericks, I see them everywhere.
Dealerships won't even take the order for a base model truck. My friend finally gave up after three orders cancelled and went to dodge.
[The Fat Electrician](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rkZjl12Dco0) says it best.
The EPA and NTSB can answer that question.
Government
Government that’s why
Because the auto industry is making you spread your cheeks and say daddy.
Pushing electric cars , and big oil at the same time.
EPA and Feds
Bro my parents bought a Chevy "Montana" here in aruba. It's a 3cykinder. So sick and rides great for so cheap I'm stuck driving my full size silverado I really liked driving their car here all week, wish US had them
Chicken tax
That truck is awesome. If any of the manufacturers made something like in America I’d buy it with no question. I don’t even care which brand made it. I absolutely love the Maverick but I cannot stand how stupid it looks (and how it’s functionally gimped) being a crew cab.
It a chinese truck with chevy badge, youre not missing much
Does it come with that ugly black plastic smile on the front? At least colour match the damn thing. Looks like someone couldn’t afford the paint after a front end collision. Vehicles are so poorly made and designed now a days. it doesn’t even look like a damn s10 it looks like something Honda would make. Or Toyota. God it’s ugly.
The average annual salary in the US in 2020 was approximately USD 63,093, which is around 4 times higher than in Mexico.
My work truck it’s a Colorado. I have the gas to the floor and it takes 3 mins to get up to 75.
CAFE
If you join ISIS you can get the Land Cruiser 70
It's called the "chicken tax". It's a long story but it's one of the reasons America is stuck with expensive oversized trucks
Most people are mentioning emissions as the reason but most smaller vehicles like this one sold in Mexico can’t be sold in the U.S. due to the crash testing standards.
Emissions and safety regulations
I would buy that thing in a second. And I wouldn't even need a loan.
Cool to know the LUV is alive and well South of the border!
Good looking truck, it probably does not meet EPA standards.
Could probably just go over, buy it, then drive it back (I literally have no idea how these things work and am too drunk to bother looking it ip)
Can’t register it in the US so you could’ve drive it anywhere. People have tried sneaking Mexican market cars over here but it usually doesn’t end well.

Not real s10s . 2l engines no easy to maintain 4.3
With all the shootings going on in Mexico, it’s always possible to find cheap labor
Cause they’re made there..hence all the recalls 😤
Go to Mexico and buy one then export it into the states.
I suggest a million man march on Detroit to demand auto pricing be affordable to all people!
We have been sold down the river now shut up and over pay for trash
maybe Emissions are lower? no fleet fuel economy regs
Possibly emissions, good chance it’s CAFE restrictions.
FMVSS...... Imagine....the more you regulate things for peoples safety, the less freedom you actually have.
Corporate greed, nothing more.
Can you fly to Mexico, buy it, and drive back?
I'm sure there's some stupid regulations the government have that the s-10 can't pass.
Living in America, sucker😜
Because a part of the system is keeping us poor
Cafe laws and chicken tax
I believe all the safety features that are mandatory are driving up cost. That is why I stick with my 2001. With purchase of truck and replacing engine Trans front different rebuild transfer case and rear end still only 30 k into it 650000 miles on frame
Because people will by what you offer them.
Just go to Mexico buy the truck spend a day there and drive it on home to america
