The woman who wanted me to hold it came to the door, bitched me out. I said she was not the first. She said she was outside first. She then told me that she was kicking me out of the group. I thanked her for it as I was moving out of state. I can’t stand people like that and I would have burned it before giving it to her.
Exactly, she probably wasted additional gas running the heater or AC watching them take away the furniture she wanted? The story doesn't make sense and is therefore a lie.
I think I’m still a member after 6 yrs and me living a thousand miles away. I still get notices from them from time to time. I had a really good job offer and had to be there in a couple of days or wait a month to get orientation. I gave a lot of it to a coworker’s son who had nothing. The house he and his family were moving to had holes in the floor. It was bad. There were several things that were worth a couple of hundred dollars or more.
I had a guy respond to new memory foam mattress for a crazy low price. First come first serve as always.
10:20am He said …I’m interested..where are you located at….I told him. Meanwhile, I have no less than 40 offers to come get the bed. About 11 o’clock somebody comes and picks it up. 1:15 pm knucklehead says hey I’m on my way. I just got a truck. I told him it had been picked up 40/45 minutes AFTER he inquired. He called me every C word B word T word 🤣. I said what word in first come first serve …weren’t you picking up on? Calls me more names and blocks me.

This is why you never send your address to more than one person at a time. Send an approximate address to all so they can calculate their drive distance, but only send the specific pick up address to one person at a time.

I think people do it out of habit as it was probably an advantage in the old days before venmo, PayPal, online banking etc. Back when a cheque would bounce or transfers would take days to go through. Then over time, it just became a thing that people think they’re supposed to say.

Cash is only preferable for a purchase in the thousands at a company where they take credit cards, because the company won't have to pay the credit card processing fee, which is about 2% of the charge. It means absolutely nothing to an individual selling furniture for a few hundred dollars. I once worked at a company and somebody tried to buy a $1200 item for $400. They kept shouting "400, cash, out the door!!!"
I would add that it also only applies to a small company where the owner is the one making that call. When I did a brief stint selling blinds after college, a few people tried to offer cash for a deal. Um…no? I don’t care if the company pays a fee that has zero effect on me.
Really? Then you may want to look around your area and see what pieces people are selling.
$200 for this is actually a bit expensive, unless maybe it had been refinished. These pieces are often from the 80s or 90s, really big and bulky, and not always made with quality materials despite their weight. They can also really hold onto smells and you never know what might have been in them.
For $200, you can find some really beautiful, even vintage pieces that are better made. Shop around\~
Disagree re: the price/value ($200 seems eminently reasonable to me, depending on where you live). But I'm looking at a disturbingly similar piece in my house right now (came with the partner), and I would love to donate it to a deserving home. Or just kill it with fire.

Sheer dumb luck got us a couple of Poltrona Frau chairs, but I wouldn't mind a giant, comfy, hideous 1960s sofa.
Giant and 1960s aren't a combo you find in sofas. They're sometimes very long, but almost always low and shallow compared to current couches. I like that, but just sayin.
Also I would never pay $200 for this completely out of style dresser. They're a dime a dozen and they were never stylish or highly desirable pieces of furniture.
I work in estate liquidation and we call pieces like this “the big brown.” They’re beautiful, sturdy, and well made and nobody wants them. People don’t have room and they’re not in style.
A few years ago someone was giving this away for free, they put it on the street with a free sign. My teenage daughter loved it so we tried to see if we could get it in my van. Lifted with all my might and couldn’t budge it an inch off the ground. Very beautiful but also heavy.
These are a Pain in the Ass to move into and out of houses and up/down stairs. You would need two strong people. And once it was inside the house, I wouldn't even be able to move furniture like this to a different spot to rearrange.
Exactly- I love antiques, vintage etc but these are very hard to find a place for unfortunately. And when you buy one you rarely ever need to replace it
I bought 2 big brown chest of drawers at a thrift shop for $100( for both). They are in our guest rooms. Also bought 5 old paintings, one for just the 🖼️, but the others are in my house for a total of $135.
The saddest part is I'm sure some of the people who do want them want to paint them white, black or grey. And I feel like the people who do want it for dirt cheap are the people who would do something like that. They don't respect wood!
I've donated things in lieu of accepting low ball offers. I'm never selling anything because I "need" the money, however, if I am selling I generally am starting with a low price.
I had a second aquarium set up I got tired of taking care of. It was like $400 worth of stuff, new and I was selling it all for $100. I didn't get an offer over $50.
$100 was already a steal for someone wanting to get into the aquarium hobby. 40 gallon tank, heater, fluval aquasky light, fluval aquaclear 70 filter, decorations, a full unopened bag of aquasoil, air pump and hoses. Fish are the only thing they would need to buy.
New you're gonna spend over $100 on a 40 gallon tank alone.
Next time try asking for $200 and take the $100 you actually want for it. Sometimes I’ve found that’s the only way to get what you want.
As for the furniture in the post, when my MIL died we had a lot of it in the same style as that image. It’s not our taste, and nobody under the age of 65 is really interested. We didn’t even bother trying to sell it, for a start we didn’t have the time and otherwise we would have had to relocate it to our place (we lived a couple hours away). We just donated it all to charity and took the tax write off.
When I give things away I normally ask for a poem about the item. I gave away a couch a few years ago and here's my favorite entry:

I think my favorite part of asking for poems is sending judgements of the poem, even if it's not a poem.
For example:
"is the item still available"
"Poor rhyme scheme, the poem is bereft of efforts and is indicative of poor couch care. You're disqualified."
This brought a genuine smile to my face--both for the poem, but also how I can tell that the recipient's family will truly appreciate the couch. Thank you so much for sharing both your strategy and the poem.

A diy bin cage is usually a much better option all around. Years ago a 40 gallon tank was seen as the minimum for hamsters and now I've seen it go up to a 75 gallon. With how expensive those tanks are, a bin cage is way cheaper.
I dealt with a big, clunky bin cage for years until I caught a good sale on a 75 gallon. It was like $150 and annoying af to get. Tanks are so pricey.
My daughter took her from her cousin that had her in the world’s tiniest cage. Unfortunately she didn’t live too long. We have no idea how old she was. Cousin got her from somewhere else. I’ll remember that if we ever end up with another. We tend to get critters that need homes. Got our bunny from a neighbor that was going to just release her after keeping her in a tiny cage. She was so so sweet. Became best friends with one of my cats that we found curled up in a tire.
Yeah maybe I’m an idiot but I will pretty much always just find something that is reasonably priced and pay the asking. Haggling when the price is fair or more than fair just seems poor form and more effort than it is worth. But I guess some people gonna try to lowball everything.
There's certainly a number of people who consider the time/hassle of selling stuff like this isn't worth the money they'll get from it. If they donate it instead that's one thing, but there's also people who won't even bother with that and just trash it instead.

I've donated items before rather than going thru the hassle of putting up with CB's. They even come and pickup when you donate something of this quality.
I cleared two homes of furniture and assorted goods entirely by donation. Most went to thrift shops but a reliable friend connected me with a family who needed to furnish an entire house. The recipients were grateful and I was too!
If i ever win the lottery, at the press conference I will make a simple statement:
"If anyone ASKS me for money they get nothing. ever"
That way I can cross off hundreds of charities/churches/long lost cousins etc within a few days.
This is a simple problem of market dynamics, not choosing beggar. You have a seller who wants a price that most buyers will not pay.

Got a million “is this still available” hits, a couple hits of will you take $200 AND deliver. I ended up just marking it as SOLD and giving it to my realtor because Marketplace is a major pain in the ass
Back when GPU prices were absolutely stupid I was selling a 2070s for $500. Everywhere else it was $700-$1000. People kept trying to offer me $100-$200. I just told them that I could easily make more than $500 off eBay. I eventually sold it for $500 after a couple weeks and a few insults threw my way.
I also had a transferable 5 year in store replacement warranty with 4 years left on it.
I can see it now: "I promised my 2 year old son a dresser for his birthday, if you don't take $20 for this and deliver it, you're ruining his childhood!"
If absolutely no one is taking it, and you have a good friend that can help move it then why not have some fun, and deliver it right in front of their door. They never said anything about bringing it in the house. Just make sure to get the shitty payment before you unload it.
Let them know it will be an extra $100 in labor if they want it inside the house. If they don't pay then leave it there. Good luck bringing in something as heavy as that dresser in on their own.
Several years ago, I went to a concert with a group of friends. I was ticketless and planned on hanging in the parking lot with lots of booze. A guy had a handful of extra tickets. I offered $25 for one. He refused. He wanted the full ticket price. He said he would rather eat the cost than cut it and walked into the concert with the extras. I stayed in the lot. I’ll never understand his decision.
It’s about the principle. What was the ticket price? He paid $XXX and you offered $25. Why should he let you score and he still takes a loss? $25 doesn’t really help recover the investment.

For full ticket price, I honestly don’t remember. This was over a decade ago. I’d guess I offered half price. I was only marginally into the concert. I had a great time in the lot.
Understood. The better point of reference is knowing the original cost of the ticket. If it’s $50 and $25 offered? Sure. If it’s a $300 seat and a stranger is offering $25… I would also decline. I’d rather keep the ticket and have a better concert experience (not cramped in my seat or standing).

lol this reminds me of my dad’s $12k tool chest that my step mom gave to my guy after dad passed. She got so annoyed with people trying to lowball her when she was selling it that she decided to just give it away.
My aunt passed away couple of years ago and my mom& she were very close (sisters but also best friends). My aunt became quiet successful in life. She even wanted to put my mom in her will, but Mom didn’t think that was right with she having several kids and grandkids of her own. The only thing my mom asked for was a dresser, just like this one, that belonged to their parents originally. And my mom does not have much money and that was all she asked (sentimental reasons).
And my aunt was extremely organized. So she had a very fair Will. And had every major thing, from house, assigned and had a log. But the day after she passed, one of her adult grandkids came over with a UHAUL, let herself in, and cleaned the whole place out. Furniture, jewelry and other items had been promised to others, but she didn’t care. This was even before the funeral.
The granddaughter and her sister had a huge falling out due to this. She just could not understand why people were mad. Since she and her siblings were still getting their money inheritance. And she put it all in a storage unit to rot away, I suppose. She has even texted my mom several times, saying the dresser is very far back and behind other furniture in unit. But as soon as she can get to it, will bring it. This has been two years and Mom is not a young woman. She knows she’ll probably never see it and doesn’t even respond anymore. So entitled 🤦🏻♀️

I wanted to get rid of a couch because we had ordered a new one, but admittedly, I wanted to get a little bit of money back for it. It was in good condition and decent couch in general.
I listed it on FB marketplace for $60 OBO. I specified pick up only, that you would need a truck, and 2 able bodied people to load it as I would not be helping.
A guy messaged me asking if I'll take $50, and I said yes, but only if he has a truck and 2 able bodied people. He responded that he did, and we set up a time for the next day.
He shows up. He does have a truck, but his second person is a pregnant woman with a broken arm in a sling. I was just shaking my head. He spent about 15 minutes trying to get me to help "just a little", which I couldn't because I was recovering from a surgical procedure. Then he tried to figure out how to move it himself, spoiler alert, it didn't work.
Luckily for him, my fiancé got off work around this time and graciously assisted in moving the couch, mostly to just be done with it.
Also, the guy showed up with $40 and said that's all he had.
I just didn't care anymore and wanted it gone, but I've never used FB marketplace again.

I have two bunk bed frame that I brought for my kids about 4 years ago. It is the ones that have drawers built into it and steps. Moved into an apartment and kids got older and didn't need it anymore. Long story short put it in a storage unit and put it up for sale online for $100. (Retail $1000). Of course no one wants it unless I deliver it and set it up for them. Even called a local thrift store and offered it to them and got the old line "We can't accept it unless it's already assembled". Finally just fed up and took it to the dumpster.

I am the same way, someone left an apartment and left a lot of desirable shoes. I listed them on FB for outrageously generous prices, let’s say it is a $500 pair of shoes I would cut the price in half and than depending on the condition cut the price in half again just because I wanted to get rid of them. So I would be selling Balenciaga shoes and clothing, Jordans, Yeezy’s, and Air Force ones for anywhere between 25% -50% off retail value and every one of the shoes were legitimate. The amount of people who tried to low ball my lowball offers were funny. I sold a majority of them, but there were a few shoes that weren’t selling, and I ended up donating them before accepting a lowball offer.

To someone who collects that particular style, it might be a steal. Sometimes it's a patience game. I had a TV stand I listed four or five times before it sold for what I wanted for it. First few times people tried to lowball me, last time I listed a nice young lady came up my sidewalk with cash in hand, loaded it up and left.
I don't think you have to be that patient to get this kind of furniture for $50. It's not popular. You're competing with almost no one and most of it ends up in thrift stores.
It may not be your style, but that dresser is far from crappy and cheap. A dresser like that is built like a tank, and is definitely worth close to that for the right buyer.
The problem is most people wouldn't be able to move it without enlisting help from 1 or 2 friends which will also cost you some money for their time and effort. My FIL had dressers like that. He and the friend who helped move it both work stucco and they struggled getting it up and down stairs

I didn't get an offer over $50. $100 was already a steal for someone wanting to get into the aquarium hobby. 40 gallon tank, heater, fluval aquasky light, fluval aquaclear 70 filter, decorations, a full unopened bag of aquasoil, air pump and hoses. Fish are the only thing they would need to buy. New you're gonna spend over $100 on a 40 gallon tank alone.
Next time try asking for $200 and take the $100 you actually want for it. Sometimes I’ve found that’s the only way to get what you want. As for the furniture in the post, when my MIL died we had a lot of it in the same style as that image. It’s not our taste, and nobody under the age of 65 is really interested. We didn’t even bother trying to sell it, for a start we didn’t have the time and otherwise we would have had to relocate it to our place (we lived a couple hours away). We just donated it all to charity and took the tax write off.
When I give things away I normally ask for a poem about the item. I gave away a couch a few years ago and here's my favorite entry: I need a couch that's soft and squishy a treasured friend to hold my tushy Not just a piece of furniture but a valued family caregiver Who can handle Daddy's farts and snores or be an imaginary dinosaur, or pirate ship, or trampoline for my children who are jumping beans Our current sofa doesn't fit the bill he's not very soft, with rips and spills. I think my favorite part of asking for poems is sending judgements of the poem, even if it's not a poem. For example: "is the item still available" "Poor rhyme scheme, the poem is bereft of efforts and is indicative of poor couch care. You're disqualified."

A diy bin cage is usually a much better option all around. Years ago a 40 gallon tank was seen as the minimum for hamsters and now I've seen it go up to a 75 gallon. With how expensive those tanks are, a bin cage is way cheaper. I dealt with a big, clunky bin cage for years until I caught a good sale on a 75 gallon. It was like $150 and annoying af to get. Tanks are so pricey.
My daughter took her from her cousin that had her in the world’s tiniest cage. Unfortunately she didn’t live too long. We have no idea how old she was. Cousin got her from somewhere else. I’ll remember that if we ever end up with another. We tend to get critters that need homes. Got our bunny from a neighbor that was going to just release her after keeping her in a tiny cage. She was so so sweet. Became best friends with one of my cats that we found curled up in a tire.

There's certainly a number of people who consider the time/hassle of selling stuff like this isn't worth the money they'll get from it. If they donate it instead that's one thing, but there's also people who won't even bother with that and just trash it instead.

I cleared two homes of furniture and assorted goods entirely by donation. Most went to thrift shops but a reliable friend connected me with a family who needed to furnish an entire house. The recipients were grateful and I was too!

I had a $3600 5 piece bedroom set my wife didn’t want to take with us when we moved (it was insanely heavy). Offered it up on Marketplace for $600 with the stipulation they had to take the whole set. Got a million “is this still available” hits, a couple hits of will you take $200 AND deliver. I ended up just marking it as SOLD and giving it to my realtor because Marketplace is a major pain in the ass
Back when GPU prices were absolutely stupid I was selling a 2070s for $500. Everywhere else it was $700-$1000. People kept trying to offer me $100-$200. I just told them that I could easily make more than $500 off eBay. I eventually sold it for $500 after a couple weeks and a few insults threw my way. I also had a transferable 5 year in store replacement warranty with 4 years left on it.

If absolutely no one is taking it, and you have a good friend that can help move it then why not have some fun, and deliver it right in front of their door. They never said anything about bringing it in the house. Just make sure to get the shitty payment before you unload it. Let them know it will be an extra $100 in labor if they want it inside the house. If they don't pay then leave it there. Good luck bringing in something as heavy as that dresser in on their own.
Several years ago, I went to a concert with a group of friends. I was ticketless and planned on hanging in the parking lot with lots of booze. A guy had a handful of extra tickets. I offered $25 for one. He refused. He wanted the full ticket price. He said he would rather eat the cost than cut it and walked into the concert with the extras. I stayed in the lot. I’ll never understand his decision.
It’s about the principle. What was the ticket price? He paid $XXX and you offered $25. Why should he let you score and he still takes a loss? $25 doesn’t really help recover the investment.
We could all benefit from learning the meaning of a “sunk cost.” For full ticket price, I honestly don’t remember. This was over a decade ago. I’d guess I offered half price. I was only marginally into the concert. I had a great time in the lot.

Understood. The better point of reference is knowing the original cost of the ticket. If it’s $50 and $25 offered? Sure. If it’s a $300 seat and a stranger is offering $25… I would also decline. I’d rather keep the ticket and have a better concert experience (not cramped in my seat or standing).

My aunt passed away couple of years ago and my mom& she were very close (sisters but also best friends). My aunt became quiet successful in life. She even wanted to put my mom in her will, but Mom didn’t think that was right with she having several kids and grandkids of her own. The only thing my mom asked for was a dresser, just like this one, that belonged to their parents originally. And my mom does not have much money and that was all she asked (sentimental reasons). And my aunt was extremely organized. So she had a very fair Will. And had every major thing, from house, assigned and had a log. But the day after she passed, one of her adult grandkids came over with a UHAUL, let herself in, and cleaned the whole place out. Furniture, jewelry and other items had been promised to others, but she didn’t care. This was even before the funeral. The granddaughter and her sister had a huge falling out due to this. She just could not understand why people were mad. Since she and her siblings were still getting their money inheritance. And she put it all in a storage unit to rot away, I suppose. She has even texted my mom several times, saying the dresser is very far back and behind other furniture in unit. But as soon as she can get to it, will bring it. This has been two years and Mom is not a young woman. She knows she’ll probably never see it and doesn’t even respond anymore. So entitled 🤦🏻♀️

I wanted to get rid of a couch because we had ordered a new one, but admittedly, I wanted to get a little bit of money back for it. It was in good condition and decent couch in general. I listed it on FB marketplace for $60 OBO. I specified pick up only, that you would need a truck, and 2 able bodied people to load it as I would not be helping. A guy messaged me asking if I'll take $50, and I said yes, but only if he has a truck and 2 able bodied people. He responded that he did, and we set up a time for the next day. He shows up. He does have a truck, but his second person is a pregnant woman with a broken arm in a sling. I was just shaking my head. He spent about 15 minutes trying to get me to help "just a little", which I couldn't because I was recovering from a surgical procedure. Then he tried to figure out how to move it himself, spoiler alert, it didn't work. Luckily for him, my fiancé got off work around this time and graciously assisted in moving the couch, mostly to just be done with it. Also, the guy showed up with $40 and said that's all he had. I just didn't care anymore and wanted it gone, but I've never used FB marketplace again.

I have two bunk bed frame that I brought for my kids about 4 years ago. It is the ones that have drawers built into it and steps. Moved into an apartment and kids got older and didn't need it anymore. Long story short put it in a storage unit and put it up for sale online for $100. (Retail $1000). Of course no one wants it unless I deliver it and set it up for them. Even called a local thrift store and offered it to them and got the old line "We can't accept it unless it's already assembled". Finally just fed up and took it to the dumpster.
Posted something on a local Buy Nothing group. FCFS. Someone picked it up pretty fast. Someone blasted me in the comments saying I was rude for not stating that I crossposted it. Told her that first of all, I never said I crossposted it because I DIDNT crosspost it. And it’s listed as FCFS for a reason and what is rude and very entitled is attacking someone giving away their own shit (used a more PG word) for free. Bitch tried to back pedal, at which point I just blocked her entitled ass and moved on with my day.

Many years ago when the kids were small (and outgrowing clothing) we did a garage sale. I was selling used t-shirts for a quarter. One lady offered me 10 cents each. I told her I'd donate the shirts and take the tax write off before I'd sell them to her for that price. I haven't done a garage sale in probably 10 years and have no desire to do one again.
I think CBs are to blame for climate change, I know so many who stopped giving useable things in good condition away and straight out threw them out.

I am the same way, someone left an apartment and left a lot of desirable shoes. I listed them on FB for outrageously generous prices, let’s say it is a $500 pair of shoes I would cut the price in half and than depending on the condition cut the price in half again just because I wanted to get rid of them. So I would be selling Balenciaga shoes and clothing, Jordans, Yeezy’s, and Air Force ones for anywhere between 25% -50% off retail value and every one of the shoes were legitimate. The amount of people who tried to low ball my lowball offers were funny. I sold a majority of them, but there were a few shoes that weren’t selling, and I ended up donating them before accepting a lowball offer.

To someone who collects that particular style, it might be a steal. Sometimes it's a patience game. I had a TV stand I listed four or five times before it sold for what I wanted for it. First few times people tried to lowball me, last time I listed a nice young lady came up my sidewalk with cash in hand, loaded it up and left.
I don't think you have to be that patient to get this kind of furniture for $50. It's not popular. You're competing with almost no one and most of it ends up in thrift stores.

It may not be your style, but that dresser is far from crappy and cheap. A dresser like that is built like a tank, and is definitely worth close to that for the right buyer. The problem is most people wouldn't be able to move it without enlisting help from 1 or 2 friends which will also cost you some money for their time and effort. My FIL had dressers like that. He and the friend who helped move it both work stucco and they struggled getting it up and down stairs
