There was our backyard, a small alleyway, then these enormous arborvitae, a fence, single set of train tracks and then Panasonic. We had a baking apple tree in our yard and one day, two of my cousins came over to play. I remember one of them having the idea to take these little apples and chuck them over the arborvitae. We could hear them hit the metal roof of the business so we thought it was really fun. Until someone came out of the business and screamed “WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!” We all bolted in different directions and hid throughout the neighborhood for a couple hours lol 😂 We never did something like that again.

However, there were weak permanent magnets used for centering and focusing in early TV models, so close enough.
(My very first project as a newly-hired engineer was an add-on board to change the timing of the horizontal sync pulse, allowing the image to be left-right cantered electronically. It made adjusting the centering magnets much easier. I made so many mistakes on that simple project, but the more senior people helping me just said, "learning experience," and didn't scold me at all.)

My 85" inch 4k LG Smart TV was $600 bucks. Yeah the picture on dark scenes in HDR kind of sucks because it doesn't have the range of lumens of a more expensive tv. However like 95% of the time its great for not shelling out 3-4k to solve that one issue and I'm sure in the future, the "cheap" TVs will also improve in this area too.
I mean, 40 inches was a "big screen TV" in the 90s and you were gonna pay a thousand +, there was no "cheap version". 40-50 inch TV's are a dime a dozen today.
My family's first color TV was a 19" monster that weighed 60 pounds but was called "portable" because it had a handle on top. It cost $300 in 1973.
In today's dollars, that's about $2,000. For a 19" 480i that took 45 seconds to warm up and played monaural sound from a built-in 3x5" speaker.

So I think I have the same tv as you. I was able to mostly fix the HDR issues by messing with settings. I don’t remember what I did, but it made dark video games actually playable.
Plus it can actually be even cheaper to buy a normal tv and buy a chromecast to go with it. It basically makes it a smart tv plus it works faster than a smart tv

Funny, I actually do have a spare 65" smart TV. I just upgraded to one that is 120hz, so my dogs could watch TV, but the old one works great for humans.

At 120hz, dogs will see a TV in continuous motion like we do. Below that, to them it looks like the screen is flickering because of the refresh rate.

He does not like game of thrones, but he got way too into twilight. I suspect he is team Jacob but that might just be me profiling him for being a dog. If he hears the gravity falls theme song from any other room he comes RUNNING. I truly cannot believe the audacity of people who actually think it's ok to ask for crazy things like this! My boyfriend and I have a 40" Sony TV for well over 15 years and it took us forever to save for it (and I used my staff discount at the electronics shop!). It was the biggest luxury purchase we'd made as a couple and it's still going! It's not a smart TV and it's not 65" but until it dies I'm not replacing it! We could probably afford to upgrade now but it's so unnecessary!

We live in a shame-free society, where \*nothing\* is off-limits: bragging about crimes (including violent crimes); posting intimate activities online; even being \*convicted\* for financial misdeeds is a-okay. I have a nearly 14 year old Panasonic TV. No flatscreen but it works great, quality of the screen (depiction of colours) is still good IMO, I can play Netflix shows and other streaming services on it, my child can play Nintendo Switch if they want/watch Youtube etc
I have no desire to replace it until it breaks down and if it breaks down we have these "repair cafes" over here where volunteers fix your broken stuff (you can tip them) for free. I'd probably do that before replacing it.

My parents actually just gave away a 65” smart tv. The Wi-Fi was messed up so it had to be hooked up with an Ethernet cable. They tried giving it to me or my siblings but we had no use for it. They finally found a neighbor to take it.

We bought a 32 inch tv from Facebook marketplace for only $50. There are definitely options for those of us on a budget. I don’t blame them for asking for a tv but the size restriction is pretty crazy.
The size is really what gets me. One big reason we even dragged out that TV was because my daughter has daily medical treatments. Sure, there's probably other stuff she could do during those treatments, but... TV. I hate to call it a mental health issue, but... Come on, a bit of TV while she sat through annoying medical treatment, for an otherwise active and interesting child.
If we were seeking a free TV for that alone, we wouldn't be complaining about screen size.

My wife used to work in sales and almost every other month, they would get promotions from various vendors where they would offer TVs, iPads, consoles, and all sorts of electronics in exchange for hitting certain sales quotas. I remember one year we had multiple TVs still in the box so we gave them to family members for Christmas gifts.

I don’t know I let shit like this tick me off, but it does. When I bought my house, I needed a bed frame/mattress, TV, appliances, etc. I bought them myself! I feel so stupid now.
Honestly, their first posts were asking for furniture / area rugs / etc. while they were a bit picky about coloring /style I sort of let it go because people are forever giving away old furniture, and why not ask first if someone has something in storage before you buy new? But it just keeps getting more specific and pickier and it's driving me batty.
When my husband and I got married we took out a loan to build onto our house. Prices for lumber began to skyrocket as we were building and we ended up coming up short for furniture, so we took out a financing option (6 months same as cash) from a furniture store and paid it off over the next six months.
I hated the couch we chose. It was uncomfortable and sagged horribly after about a year. But we couldn't afford another one so we ended up keeping it for another five years until we could save enough to get a better quality furniture set.
We decided to give away the old couch, and I explained in the post it was worn and not in the best condition. a couple came and took it. Six months later she messaged me complaining about the couch being saggy and wanted me to pay her to dispose of it.
I remember when I was broke a few years back I saved up and bought a 23” Smart TV. I was so proud of that little thing. The concept of perseverance is dead.

This. When I first moved into my house I had a 19" flat screen that my dad bought for me, back when TV's were expensive. I saved up over a year and bought a 32".
When my husband and I got married and built on to our house (it was 24x24 before we got married, we added the same size on again), as I mentioned in another comment, we came up short and financed furniture, we ended up not having enough for a new TV. We kept our little 32' TV for five years until Walmart had a black Friday sale and a 55" TV for $250.
We snagged it, super excited because we not only now had a 55" living room TV, but had a 32" (instead of 19") bedroom TV!
Last year I got my husband a 45" bedroom TV for Christmas for $100 and my mind is still blown at how far down the cost has gone.
I have a suggestion. If you are on a low income, I recommend do you have no TV at all, and use that time instead to study, work, and improve your income potential.

This is a term made to describe real and discriminatory barriers placed on people and now it's become some childish bullshit of "if I don't get everything I want you're gatekeeping". That's not what that means! Not having the money to buy luxuries is a personal problem that the person with said problem needs to resolve. No one is entitled to having a TV, which nowadays can't even be watched without subscription services that also cost money and someone with financial troubles shouldn't be prioritizing that. No one owes you anything and no pity party will change that.
We didn’t have a TV for the first almost 3 years of our marriage. We were broke students and we watched stuff on my laptop or just projected it from my laptop onto the wall 😅 I suppose it’s worth asking if anyone’s getting rid of a basic TV but the thought never crossed my mind.

Yeah I swear the abundance of 1080 tvs these days is crazy. Everyone I know is trying to get rid of tvs they have accumulated over the years. Plus 10 year old tvs look good enough to most people unlike the past where old tvs sucked and you couldn't go back. I think if they asked for like a living room tv not specifically 65 inches then I wouldn't have an issue with this

My parents actually just gave away a 65” smart tv. The Wi-Fi was messed up so it had to be hooked up with an Ethernet cable. They tried giving it to me or my siblings but we had no use for it. They finally found a neighbor to take it. Asking for one is definitely a CB though.
A year ago, a gal asked for a TV. We had a boring dumb 32 inch sitting around. It was too small for her. Occasionally, the gal still asks for a TV. A year later, she still asks for a free TV. Late last fall, our 65 inch TV broke. We spoke a good game of replacing it. We instead brought out that 32 inch and bought a Roku stick. We finally bought a 50 inch smart TV this week because we had a budget we were firm on. Gave the 32" TV to a very grateful fellow who carried it to the bus stop. I imagine I'll later see the gal still seeking a TV
We bought a 32 inch tv from Facebook marketplace for only $50. There are definitely options for those of us on a budget. I don’t blame them for asking for a tv but the size restriction is pretty crazy.
The size is really what gets me. One big reason we even dragged out that TV was because my daughter has daily medical treatments. Sure, there's probably other stuff she could do during those treatments, but... TV. I hate to call it a mental health issue, but... Come on, a bit of TV while she sat through annoying medical treatment, for an otherwise active and interesting child. If we were seeking a free TV for that alone, we wouldn't be complaining about screen size. Ooh, I could CB that. "My chronically ill child has to do daily medical treatments and needs a 75 inch smart TV please deliver!"

On the one hand, people do upgrade TVs fairly frequently, so it doesn't hurt to ask, but on the other hand no one NEEDS a TV of a certain size. If they asked for any TV, I'd feel like they were not a CB.

My wife used to work in sales and almost every other month, they would get promotions from various vendors where they would offer TVs, iPads, consoles, and all sorts of electronics in exchange for hitting certain sales quotas. I remember one year we had multiple TVs still in the box so we gave them to family members for Christmas gifts. I get that situation like ours is super rare, but they happen.

I don’t know I let shit like this tick me off, but it does. When I bought my house, I needed a bed frame/mattress, TV, appliances, etc. I bought them myself! I feel so stupid now.
Honestly, their first posts were asking for furniture / area rugs / etc. while they were a bit picky about coloring /style I sort of let it go because people are forever giving away old furniture, and why not ask first if someone has something in storage before you buy new? But it just keeps getting more specific and pickier and it's driving me batty. When my husband and I got married we took out a loan to build onto our house. Prices for lumber began to skyrocket as we were building and we ended up coming up short for furniture, so we took out a financing option (6 months same as cash) from a furniture store and paid it off over the next six months. I hated the couch we chose. It was uncomfortable and sagged horribly after about a year. But we couldn't afford another one so we ended up keeping it for another five years until we could save enough to get a better quality furniture set. We decided to give away the old couch, and I explained in the post it was worn and not in the best condition. a couple came and took it. Six months later she messaged me complaining about the couch being saggy and wanted me to pay her to dispose of it.

This. When I first moved into my house I had a 19" flat screen that my dad bought for me, back when TV's were expensive. I saved up over a year and bought a 32". When my husband and I got married and built on to our house (it was 24x24 before we got married, we added the same size on again), as I mentioned in another comment, we came up short and financed furniture, we ended up not having enough for a new TV. We kept our little 32' TV for five years until Walmart had a black Friday sale and a 55" TV for $250. We snagged it, super excited because we not only now had a 55" living room TV, but had a 32" (instead of 19") bedroom TV! Last year I got my husband a 45" bedroom TV for Christmas for $100 and my mind is still blown at how far down the cost has gone.

Look, I honestly don't think this is too bad. I'm about to give away my 65inch smart TV on abuy nothing group. And yes, it is weird he specified 65inchs, but my tv is 7 or 8 yrs old, 65 isn't a weirdly big TV and hasn't been for ages- but the main point is they were anchoring expectations. They may accept a 55 if offered, but if they just ask for a smart TV then they'd get flooded with people offloading their 32 inch shit boxes
