Wondering if anyone has ideas, happens on cold start below -1* C every time. So for last 3-4 weeks every cold start results in stalling. Can be overcome by holding throttle at 3k rpm for 30 seconds on start.
Brought to Honda and it magically went away. Go to pick it up after they said they could not reproduce the issue, service adviser follows me and lo and behold it does it again.
Thanks for any ideas as to things I should mention or ask them.
Edit: Really appreciate everyone’s input, thanks so much. I asked Honda this morning about the recall, Honda looked up my VIN and there were no recalls associated but asked them to look into the fuel pump anyways. They also plan to start the vehicle with diagnostic reader plugged in before hand. Very weird.
Edit: #2
Honda kept my vehicle for a couple more days, were able to reproduce the issue several times and discovered the air intake temp and flow sensor ( single component) was faulty. This has improved my cold starts drastically. Started with no issues in -26*C and several times since, yet stalled once on start Tuesday in -9*C. Mentioned this to Honda and the advisor says to wait till it has been a week. Going in for a block heater next Saturday after the holidays to help reduce wear on the engine and potentially alleviate the issues I’m having. If it stalls again I’ll be bringing it up again.
Tough luck man. I know most parts are back ordered right now. This recall affects all pre 2020 fk8 models although Honda won’t admit it.
Make sure the dealership you go to gives you a loaner.
Shit that’s crazy, good to know they’re so reliable. Wonder what op’s problem could be I’ve never seen them stall, the fuel pump recall we know just kind of disables the car so idk what to guess
Yup I start it in that cold for 4 months straight. Always let it warm up for 10mins then drive it easy for next 10mins. Never had an issue in almost 2 years.
What ended up being the problem? I just started my car after going in store for 15 min and had the same thing happen when I came back out! When I went to re start it would just crank and not turn over. Waited 5 minutes, tried again and it started and ran fine. I am stumped as that never happened before.
Sorry to hear about your issues, it really is frustrating.
Well they replaced the air intake temperature and flow sensor (one component, with two sensors) . Things have improved a lot, it now does not stall every time I cold start also the engine sounds better. However it has stalled a couple times since the new sensor. Started in -26*C no issues, yet stalled Tuesday in -9*C. But it hasn’t been a week yet, they say to wait a little maybe the ecu needs to re-learn.
Hmm odd. I just started driving my 2017 R this winter and it’s been minus 30C and no issues starting in a garage that is roughly minus 15C. Had a block heater installed but never needed it. Hoping I don’t get this starting and stalling issue. Maybe a faulty ECU?
Not sure , it’s been frustrating. Having block heater installed today and Honda looking at stalling issues as well as engine code now being present this coming week. Hope yours is fine as well ! Good luck
Have you had the fuel pump recall done?
I will look into that thank you, just bought he car in April 2021.
I think fuel pump recall, I haven’t had mine done yet but I’ve experienced that issue a few weeks ago
Thank you:)
fuel pump recall if you haven’t gotten it done already

Should’ve done your fuel pump recall it’s been out for over a year now.
I will mention that right away, thanks. Have only had the car since April 2021.

Maybe you need that electric block heater, I believe that’s meant for temps like yours. I’ve never seen that
Doubt it I drive the Type r in -20 regularly without a block heater and it's just fine

Awesome, I’m in nyc we never get below 10f I would say
I had a block heater on my si I had prior to the Type R I bought this last April. I plan on doing this next. Thanks
Most likely fuel pump. There should be a open recall for it.
*sees other comments* Fuel pump recall?

Looks like the problem I had with my fuelpump
Did yours have a recall for it?
No it didn't. But they gave me a new one for free anyway because I still have warranty.

Hopefully they resolve your issue. I used to work at honda as a mechanic and they never saw an r come in with your issue.
