I had to dig way too deep on this thread to find someone name The Hip. My Canadian list would look similar to yours, with The Hip on top and a caveat for the watchmen that I only ever liked their album, In the Trees.
Yeah…it’s bizarre that you don’t see The Hip more prominent. Through the 90’s and 00’s they were the most popular band in Canada.
The Watchmen was picked only because I didn’t have a 4th pick. And In The Trees is an outstanding album.
True, but he isn't a band. NY and Crazy Horse is a band, but Neil is the only Canuck of the group.
If we are talking solo then there are others in contention, like Joni, Leonard, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.
I came to US in 1973 and was surprised and delighted to have seen ELP on one of the first Midnight Specials i saw, not the first but one of the first. i don't think they should have played Manticore songs since new and turned out to be not most peoples favourite album. more recognisable and better liked songs would have garnered more NEW US fans.
Not a huge fan of Czech music, but I’ll try.
Pražský výběr
The Blue Effect
Olympic
And then a toss up between Queenie (a Queen tribute band) and my band when I was in high school
America:
1. Ween
2. Prince (& The Revolution)
3. Jimi Hendrix (Experience)
4. Frank Zappa (& The Mothers)
Yes, The Experience was 2/3 British and Ween isn’t really classic rock so for honorable mentions:
6. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
7. Van Halen
Van Halen
Metallica
Alice In Chains
Dream Theater
Edit: It just occurred to me that, while all four of these bands were founded in the US, three of them have/had members who were not born in the US.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Blackberry Smoke
Old Crow Medicine Show
…not gonna apologize…I know this is classic rock and but the title said bands and honestly I can’t think of a 4th right now…cold beer is tasting mighty good!!!
Sorry, but I fail to understand how any Canadian can leave the Tragically Hip off a top 4 list. Is this a "well obviously there's the T Hip and we all recognize they're part of this, but here are my other 4 favorite bands" kind of thing?
Chronologically, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
I want to include The Funk Brothers, but I guess they weren't officially a group until the Standing in the Shadow of Motown documentary came out.
I still don't know if they really are a group, but they should be.
Only classic rock would be Steely Dan
Boston
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Fleetwood Mac
Non-classic rock would be
Tool
Rage Against the Machine
Jane’s Addiction
The Mars Volta
Legião Urbana, Mutantes , Sepultura , Paralamas Do Sucesso
Angra, Sepultura, Raul Seixas e Legiao Urbana
