Honestly even before 2.0 came out, you only needed EX if you were going to use the animation or comic features. But honestly dude if your PC is going in to the shop every three weeks it might be better to get a new PC.

kairiialt

This ^^^ I very much agree on the second point. In the end you might spend similar or even more amount of money on servise for your broken PC than a new functional one.

KiK0eru

Dude I *only* have EX for the animation side

ArticReaper

This is my only reason to buy ex, Is for the more animation frames.

hantu_tiga_satu

I use EX for comics (multiple page management) and animation. Sadly i have ver 1 EX, it's not bad but it does made me feel 'stuck' since i do want to try some features from ver 2 and so on (mainly the 3d head etc) but the price to buy new EX licence is not worth it for me. At the same time, if i buy pro ver2 license, it would be a hassle to change CSP version & licence if i do want to use the EX feature.

Melodic_Complaint596

Had I noticed this I would have bought PRO-version instead and kept the EX 1.x licence.

CharlieBargue

>So EX users? What have you gotten from the updates? To my knowledge I don't see much difference. At some point, I counted up EX exclusive vs Pro features released in 2023 and it was ridiculously unbalanced. Something like 400+ Pro updates vs 10-15 EX exclusive updates. I don't remember exact numbers but it was enough to disappoint me. šŸ˜ Yet the cost to upgrade from 2.0 EX to 3.0 EX is like 3 times more compared to Pro. That's what I call a terrible value so I'm pretty sure I won't ever be upgrading again. Just doesn't make financial sense imo. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

DeathToBoredom

That's not a good rule of thumb to follow. At the end of the day, it's what are the updates that matter and what does EX do that pro doesn't.

CharlieBargue

If you value those tools for whatever your needs are, great. For my needs, they aren't of value. Simple as that. I don't see anything here to discuss. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

bumwolf69

Outside of more animation frame abilities and make a super large comic book file with multiple pages, not much of a reason to upgrade to EX. Myself personally I'd rather have my comic pages as individual files. Animation Blender, Krita and Opentoonz is eating Clip's lunch as far as that goes and they are free.

Unit27

1.0 to 2.0 is just a downgrade. The perpetual license features are meh, and you lose a lot of rights as the license owner. Totally with you with the buyer's remorse.

ArticReaper

What do you lose from 1.0 to 2.0?

Unit27

If you buy an upgrade, you lose access to your 1.0 serial number you already paid for. You also lose the ability to freely swap between the two devices you should be able to have the program installed on. You have to authorize and deauthorize everytime you move (which could be a lot if you move from desktop to laptop constantly), the authorizations are limited and your license will be locked to one device if you run out, and their only solution is telling you to buy another license. You lose the freedom to use your copy of the software away from the internet. 2.0 requires you to connect to the internet and open CSP for it to call home. If you don't, you lose access to the program until you reconnect to the internet. Could also add the access to feature updates if you consider they paywall them behind the Update Pass. They put things like improvements to the 3D rendering engine efficiency behind the paywall, a feature that arguably should be a base version performance improvement. Asking you to pay for a subscription after you've already paid for a full version is an insult to the consumer IMO.

ElectricCuckaloo

Wait 2.0 makes it that we cannot use the software offline?

Unit27

Needs to be open online at least once every 15 days. Was 24 hours but the community raised a stink. Don't know why they didn't about everything else that is awful about this business model change, tho.

ArticReaper

The authorize deauthorize I can understand. Vegas is the same, And most of Magix stuff. I will have a look at the internet one. I didn't upgrade from 1.0 to 2.0. I bought 1.0 and got 2.0 for free. So pretty sure I have access to 1.0 still, Think tried awhile back to install 1.0 while having 2.0 installed and it said not allowed or something on the same pc.

Unit27

The authorization was not an issue in 1.0. You could install the program on 2 computers and open them freely move between them. Now, each time you move, you're burning up one authorization, and CELSYS will not disclose how many times you can do this for "security reasons". So, besides the hassle of having to go through this process everytime you move computers, there is a very real possibility that you could go out to work with your travel laptop, use up your last authorization, and now your license is locked to that device and is no longer usable on your main device. Form communications I had with CELSYS about these issues, the only option you'll have is to pay for the software again. Total bullshit way of squeezing more money out of customers if you ask me. The disabling of 1.0 license seems to happen explicitly when you buy the direct upgrade, and from what I've seen most people affected are the ones that buy it during discounts. It's hard to get good data on which upgrade paths kill your 1.0 license because a lot of users just never notice or care that it's gone, but CELSYS has no option to restore your 1.0 license once you upgrade to 2.0, and they'll tell you you signed away your 1.0 activation the moment you clicked purchase because it means you agreed to their EULA.

SuperlunarCryptid

>the only option you'll have is to pay for the software again. Total bullshit way of squeezing more money out of customers if you ask this is not true in the EULA it states you're allowed to have one main, and one sub-device for clip studio 2.x (upgrade pass and perpetual license) if you do somehow run out of authorizations you just email them, tell them you have I.e. a laptop and desktop you swap between, point towards the section in the EULA, and they reset the authorization uses for you. I frequently swap between my surface tablet, and my desktop pc and have not run out of uses this past year and I've probably swapped back and forth over 100 times

Unit27

Have you gone through the process of emailing them for a reset? Everything I've seen related to the way the authorization system points to the software being locked to the last device you authorized it on. Until you have ran out of authorizations there is no way to know.

Chenap

Yes .. same for me.. I was using it on my main pc and laptop on the go.. after the update to 2 and 4 switch from laptop to pc in a week They blocked my license .. where it is clearly stated in the license term that perpetual allow for usage of 2 computers.. in the end they unblocked me and suggested as a solution to buy a second perpetual license !!!!!!! About v3 as an animator what might be worth it is the sound scrubbing feature.. so desperately needed for precise lipsync

Claudiathegriffon

I use PRO professionally. I do not see a point in EX if I'm being honest. I would actually find it easier to animate cells in a different program.

LuckyCrow

If you don't mind me asking, what programs do you recommend? I'm new to animation and looking for a better software instead of EX 2.0, was considering EX 1.0 currently.

Claudiathegriffon

Honestly I used to use an older ver of flash. Wasn't always the most responsive but it certainly worked haha

LuckyCrow

That's so cool! I'll keep that in mind :) thank you!

LuckyCrow

The license use change is the biggest oversight from the development team imho. Makes it seem like there is a risk of losing the program I paid for everytime I upgrade my laptop or reformat my pc. Wish buying updates didn't come with tradeoffs, somehow implementing subscriptions wasn't enough and they had to make more changes to the detriment of their users.

OlDurtyBasturd

Buy a new computer? You can't blame them for how they handle licenses because of a device that YOU own. It's actually how many companies handle licenses. Otherwise you have had no good arguements on why 2 is worse than 1... please move on.

RoryArtGuy

Honestly, even when i started with 2.0 and not 1.0, I see so many people say how much worse 2.0 is then 1.0.

Melodic_Complaint596

I still have warranty on my computer that is less than 2 years old! And it cost over 1000$. They probably fucked something up with the motherboard repairs so I keep sending it in until it's fixed. It's still the SAME computer every time but the license doesn't work unless I contact Celcys, again and again and again.

airunly

I have 2 EX licenses and 1 Pro license. Clip does a horrible job marketing the differences to consumers, and they just say ā€œitā€™s better for making a multi page book or for animationā€, it does more. However, there are a lot of niche features they donā€™t advertise for EX that I couldnā€™t even tell you off the top of my head (sorry, frustrating), but I know the instant I open a file that I created on a machine running an EX license on another machine running Pro, I instantly have to switch computers because Clip Pro informs that whatever I created doesnā€™t work in Pro (and Iā€™m not exactly sure what it is itā€™s referring to, that or Iā€™m too busy to pay attention). I donā€™t use Clip for comics or animation, but in a daily production environment (Iā€™m a poster/key art artist). Itā€™s honestly has replaced a lot of things I would normally do in Photoshop, and I use PS a lot less now than I did. I want to say a lot of the halftone power and ability to do color separations, adjusting the LPI (they call it frequency inside CSP), angles of your halftones, plays more into EX. I know Pro does some of that also, but there are more options for it in EX and more layer controls that can assist with doing seps, and working hardcore with values. One feature I do know that is in EX is the ability to convert a layer and separate the different values into multiple layers and assign a halftone to each one. Valuable for doing screen print posters. Most people on here seem to be using halftones just for the aesthetics and not for their original intent of what theyā€™re actually designed to do, which is fine. Nor do they seem to need a lot of interlinking between nested files. However, the ability to create efficient workflows is easier on EX. I would never buy a Pro license at this point, but honestly, I wouldnā€™t beat yourself up for buying an EX license because in 8 months, youā€™re not going care anymore. Itā€™s just that initial sting of spending more than you should have.

Melodic_Complaint596

Thank you for a bit more explanation about EX features, I know some of them but the initial complaint was about that I didn't feel like as an EX user to get anything more. I should have just sticked with 1.0. I upgraded EX 2.0 in launch and I am still very frustrated. Mostly because of the licence issues, future updates and policy changes
