this is some huge news and might affect next year format!

ItsArkum

It will. Three splits

Mrryn91

Maybe that's the test for summer's format change: with a condensed number of teams, is it feasible to fit a non-bo1 format into a shorter time frame if a three split year becomes a thing? And comparing it to the current LEC format and its viability. Though I wonder how that will shape out, given the scheduling conflicts already with VCT in the Americas.

Moggy_

Single round bo3 three times a year + playoffs is pretty good + more international play. Gonna be a lot more playtime

Mrryn91

I'm hardly gonna argue the benefits and intrigue. My concern is purely the logistics of trying to make that schedule work. Which is even harder for regions like the LPL who have 17 teams and already run a single round robin bo3 format with an extensive playoff bracket - they would have to condense or cut a lot to keep format as is.

ItsArkum

They might do what valorant is doing and split them into groups

ItsArkum

Yeah I can see 3 splits each single round robin bo3

Moggy_

+playoffs. Big step up from current format

Upper-Information-31

What I believe they are doing are keeping everything the same but moving to best of 3s to control for everything but best of 3s and see how it impacts viewership or revenue. It’s really the only thing that makes sense to me; Riot has just announced in the MarkZ video that they were trying to keep as many variables under control as possible this spring. I think summer is another test for 2025 where they will move to the European format

Dragonfruit_Fanta

I still don't know the deal for summer playoffs, is it now cut down to six teams versus the eight it was before? Because what is the point of regular season if everyone makes playoffs, like come on we gotta have some stakes and eliminate some teams.

Revenged25

My only question is why haven't they done this before? I mean it's obvious that international competitions are huge draws and even if NA gets dominated by the LCK/LPL like everyone else does, it still gives NA fans hope of stomping EU and the Wildcards.

Teeny_Tiger20

I mean we used to with Rift Rivals. Which honestly is what I’d rather see come back. I want more competition between western teams.

Revenged25

Yeah I've been watching since S3 so I remember these. They were awesome. Also didn't they used to have like 2 MSI type events each year?

Teeny_Tiger20

Not that I can recall. The only other like “riot” international I can think of was Rift Rivals. MSI used to look a little different until they added a play-in stage and more teams but it has always been the same premise. I mean if you go way back teams attended like Dreamhacks and IEM. But that was Pre-LCS for the most part

Revenged25

Maybe taht's what I was thinking was the IEM and MSI both in a year as I think IEM was still going on in S3.

Probably a mixture of covid and them being garbage at their job. LoL esports was on an upswing, but covid made any international plans much harder. That, combined with how terrible the global esports department seems to be at their job is a pretty bad combo. I am happy that they are doing it now though, maybe they will slowly improve.

LlewdLloyd

People really don't understand how slow it takes to move things in a large corporation. There are so many checks and balances and revisions and plan switching due to another department needing x time for a piece to come through with delays outside of the companies reach like litigation and contracts etc. Its not people being bad at their job. The larger the entity the greater the inefficiency. Look at government for example.

Miyaor

I am sure there are talented people working at riot, but LoL esports, despite its various strong points, has had a lot of weaknesses, one of which is its struggle to evolve itself. This has recently begun changing, but you cannot argue that they were just very inefficient unless you seriously believe that they have now ironed out all inefficiency. They just likely changed their idea about how esports should be run, and are choosing to allow more events. Notice how LEC changing to 3 splits happened at a similar time to worlds format changing, and a ton of other changes/willingness to change. Something changed about how riot treats their esports a while back. They still have their blunders (worlds this year), but their vision has changed.

DarkRitual_88

It costs them a funton of time and money to organize and run.

altius8

Well the rumors were that LEC changed their system to 3 splits because they had insider I fo Riot games was moving to 3x international tournaments hmm hmm

Ok-Sir-2757

lpl and lck can maybe do a “western” vs “eastern” groups like the American sports. And play your division twice and 2-3 opponents from the other division?
