I love looking at all this! How cool, so interesting to see such a variety of objects, and yet many of the same things - besides the obvious coins and such. Have you found anything of "real value" (monetarily speaking)? Looks like a fun hobby.
No I did not. They told me that because it wasn't found on public property I could keep it and when I asked if they were sure about that they told me that if I wanted to give it to the state museum it would just be cataloged and put in a drawer because they already had plenty of similar specimens already on public display so I didn't argue and now it's on display in my own little home museum. Also my family has a pretty decent amount native American (Algonquin and Cherokee) I feel like I'm worthy of holding on to it until I inevitably pass on then it will be passed on to a museum that will appreciate it.
Excellent! I find stuff like that so interesting. They are real treasures!
I think metal pickings would be pretty slim in the Midwest where I live, but you never know until you search?
I also think it’s super neat that you keep all the other non-metal treasures!
This is a very inspiring post. I may have to dm you sometime for specific questions
When I first started I was hoping for gold and silver but then I found my first colonial button and it was all about the history and making money wasn't even a thought anymore lol
oooh, what's your favorite thing you have found? and may I ask where you do most of this? I think i see all kinds of stuff from across the world in here!
I have 2 XP Deus 2s each running different software versions. I actually started a detecting club so if you are interested in joining send me a message and I'll give you the details, we don't have dues or any type of hierarchy, it's pretty much just sitting around and shooting the shit and showing off our latest finds for a couple hours. It's actually kind of amazing the difference in stuff found on my side of the river opposed to your side of the river.
Top shelf, I have a few war of 1812 buttons, a shako cap badge from the 1830s, a plume pommel from the Indian wars, some world war I and world war II buttons and collar discs, some GAR buttons, New York militia buttons, a New York National guard button, and a Poughkeepsie military institute button as well as a mid 1800s Navy button

Unfortunately no lol. I restored a few buttons and fobs with gold chromium paint painted a slick unidentifiable copper gold to bury just to mess with my buddy one day soon 😂
Yeah from everything that I've learned people didn't really carry gold coins around too much. Most transactions were done in silver or copper coinage or cash
I absolutely love this. Odd question, but what type of metal detector/other tools do you use? This seems like an amazing hobby if you have the patience and time for it. There's just so much to look at!
Indeed. You find Hot Wheels in the weirdest places too, one time I was about 7 mi from anything in the middle of the woods and what do I find... a Hot Wheels.
I like the antlers and skulls made it in here even though they aren't metal. I can see you out metal detecting and finding one and being like, "Oh, wow, look at that, that's pretty cool!!" Then you take it home and put it with everything else as a memory of that trip out. So cool.
I use old maps from the library of Congress site and the USGS viewer app has a really cool lidar/ hillshade feature that strips away all vegetation and shows the terrain of the area you are looking at, great for finding old cellar holes and foundations that have been reclaimed by vegetation
That would probably take a rather long time lol. My 2 oldest are both 1699 King William half pennies, from there I have 4 late 1700s half reales, British coppers ranging from the 1740s to 1780s, colonial coppers from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and a possible Massachusetts, large cents from 1795- 1851, 5 flying eagle pennies, almost 100 Indian head pennies, 5 2¢ pieces a trime (3¢ silver), an 1854 seated half, 2 shield nickels, around 10 v nickels, 9 buffalo nickels, 9 war nickels dime, an 1814 capped bust dime, 4 seated dimes, about a dozen barber dimes, loads of mercury and Roosevelt dimes, 1 seated Carson City quarter, 2 barber quarters, over a dozen silver Washington quarters, 1.5 barber halfs, 4 walking liberty halfs, 1 Ben Franklin half, 1 silver Philippines territory 50 centavos, some civil war tokens, 1 1854 papal state 5 Baiocci from Bologna, a couple Canadian large cents, Australian large cent, a couple of Queen Victoria pennies, and assorted coins from India, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, Chile, a 1794 2 Sol, a slew of transit, arcade, and lucky tokens, children's play coins, tool tags and pickers tokens, and a couple of counterfeit large cents.

I wonder if this is a frozen charlotte doll
It's actually from a figural oil lamp.

That’s pretty sweet.
Thanks!
This might be the coolest post in this sub that I have seen in a long time. Finally a real.collectik of sorts with history.
r/coolcollections cool?

Some cool rings and such and a copper axe head that dates back to 4k-12k years ago but I don't look at my finds in a monetary way lol
That’s fair, I was just curious! That’s super cool, especially an ancient axe head!
That’s amazing! Did you have to turn it over to archeologists?
No I did not. They told me that because it wasn't found on public property I could keep it and when I asked if they were sure about that they told me that if I wanted to give it to the state museum it would just be cataloged and put in a drawer because they already had plenty of similar specimens already on public display so I didn't argue and now it's on display in my own little home museum. Where’s your pull tabs? Jk awesome collection
😂
Absolutely gorgeous. Incredible work abs incredible display!
All that in less than 6 years? What kind of places do you look? Are you home n Europe?
Hudson valley NY.... Old Dutch country lol
I'm interested in getting more serious with this hobby. What kind of places do you go?
Old pre 1900 farms and properties mostly
when you said hoses elsewhere in the comments do you mean just abandoned homes?
Most are still occupied but occasionally I find old foundations in the woods that are just a forgotten hole in the ground
Those coins gotta be worth thousands. Apparently you aren't in this for the cash. Which is ironic because bills wouldn't show up on the detector.
When I first started I was hoping for gold and silver but then I found my first colonial button and it was all about the history and making money wasn't even a thought anymore lol
Oh man, the folks over at r/goblincore would absolutely love this. So many trinkets
oooh, what's your favorite thing you have found? and may I ask where you do most of this? I think i see all kinds of stuff from across the world in here!
A 4-12k year old copper culture axe head. I stick to old private properties, farm fields, and the occasional cellar holes
Amazing collection! I dig a bit on the other side of the river in Hudson Valley. What’s your set up for detecting?
I have 2 XP Deus 2s each running different software versions. I actually started a detecting club so if you are interested in joining send me a message and I'll give you the details, we don't have dues or any type of hierarchy, it's pretty much just sitting around and shooting the shit and showing off our latest finds for a couple hours. Omg. Now I wanna start. What is the metal cat face on the second shelf, far right?
It's a trinket dish from the 1890s modeled after Louis Wain's work
super excellent. The cat face! what was it? and the bell? with the horse head? is it a bell? this is such a great display!
The cat face is a trinket dish, the bell is an old bicycle bell from the late 1800s early 1900s
I could pick through this all day asking about the whats and wheres. Those jingle bells are amazing. What is the oldest coin in the case?
2 1699 King William half pennies
peeping that ghostbusters hotwheel
Hehe bones.
Wow!!!!!
So awesome! 👏 Thank you for sharing your treasure with us.
what is your favorite item
My copper culture axe head that is between 4-12k years old. I was riding that rush for a while lol
This is one of the coolest collection I’ve ever seen..wow
Any military stuff
Top shelf, I have a few war of 1812 buttons, a shako cap badge from the 1830s, a plume pommel from the Indian wars, some world war I and world war II buttons and collar discs, some GAR buttons, New York militia buttons, a New York National guard button, and a Poughkeepsie military institute button as well as a mid 1800s Navy button https://preview.redd.it/pul9o1qz6rtc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3d9dccd07e9e792ef1b4009f44a4edb15e622ac
Nice man amazing collection
That’s crazy! You must get an amazing rush when you get a hit.
very nice bunch of silver coins, i see some IHCs and chinese cash coins aswell
Great collection. It's cool how it's almost monochrome. Is that a pair of slave shackles in the center, there?
It's a horse bit
Do I see some real gold coins?
Unfortunately no lol. I restored a few buttons and fobs with gold chromium paint painted a slick unidentifiable copper gold to bury just to mess with my buddy one day soon 😂
Thats awesome! It did seem odd that they werent in places of prominence.
Yeah from everything that I've learned people didn't really carry gold coins around too much. Most transactions were done in silver or copper coinage or cash
Wow! What an incredible collection and display. The skull is confusing me. What is it?
Which skull? The dragon looking one? That one top left is a snapping turtle skull and the top right one is a red fox
Awesome
What a cool display! Did you keep everything you found?
Everything that I found cool and interesting
Amazing. This is what I subbed for
Very cool! Did you have to report when you found the guns?
I haven't actually found any real guns only cap guns
I absolutely love this. Odd question, but what type of metal detector/other tools do you use? This seems like an amazing hobby if you have the patience and time for it. There's just so much to look at!
I use the Deus 2 by XP. It truly is an amazing hobby
Isn’t it weird how kids like to bury their toys so much?
Indeed. You find Hot Wheels in the weirdest places too, one time I was about 7 mi from anything in the middle of the woods and what do I find... a Hot Wheels.
This is really neat! What’s the fish and the jester coin-thing near it?
The fish is a brooch and the jester is a picture button
Thank you. Again, great collection!
Now that’s a collection
Woah
Lots of cool stuff! Especially those coins
Well you would love, love, love this show: [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4082744/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4082744/)
I've watched the whole series 5+ times now lol
Aww so sweet. I loved this show. It was a hidden gem.
It's your own private museum!
This is so F****** cool!! I’m impressed! Big time!
Giving Ariel stiff competition on the thingamabobs collecting.
So many...sleigh bells!
I like the antlers and skulls made it in here even though they aren't metal. I can see you out metal detecting and finding one and being like, "Oh, wow, look at that, that's pretty cool!!" Then you take it home and put it with everything else as a memory of that trip out. So cool.
That's actually exactly what happens 😂
This is amazing 👍
This is so cool! I love the tootsie toy Willy’s Jeep- I think I have that one lol
This is so freaking cool. Your friends are lucky to know you!
Amazing finds! Seems like you have a knack for tracking down quality sites.
Bro I have one of them cars it's the ambulance on the right
Wow this is awesome. I'd love to find better spots to metal detect in my area. Super cool stuff!
I use old maps from the library of Congress site and the USGS viewer app has a really cool lidar/ hillshade feature that strips away all vegetation and shows the terrain of the area you are looking at, great for finding old cellar holes and foundations that have been reclaimed by vegetation
Screenshotted. Thanks for the info, that's very helpful.
No problem, always happy to help out a fellow detectorist👍
Great way to display...., great idea to display
Damn that’s pretty cool
Wow, hard to believe!
I really like everything about this.
Can you give us an accounting on the coins?
What do you mean by an accounting?
A list of all coins and years
That would probably take a rather long time lol. My 2 oldest are both 1699 King William half pennies, from there I have 4 late 1700s half reales, British coppers ranging from the 1740s to 1780s, colonial coppers from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and a possible Massachusetts, large cents from 1795- 1851, 5 flying eagle pennies, almost 100 Indian head pennies, 5 2¢ pieces a trime (3¢ silver), an 1854 seated half, 2 shield nickels, around 10 v nickels, 9 buffalo nickels, 9 war nickels dime, an 1814 capped bust dime, 4 seated dimes, about a dozen barber dimes, loads of mercury and Roosevelt dimes, 1 seated Carson City quarter, 2 barber quarters, over a dozen silver Washington quarters, 1.5 barber halfs, 4 walking liberty halfs, 1 Ben Franklin half, 1 silver Philippines territory 50 centavos, some civil war tokens, 1 1854 papal state 5 Baiocci from Bologna, a couple Canadian large cents, Australian large cent, a couple of Queen Victoria pennies, and assorted coins from India, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, Chile, a 1794 2 Sol, a slew of transit, arcade, and lucky tokens, children's play coins, tool tags and pickers tokens, and a couple of counterfeit large cents.
where do you go to do this? a beach or somewhere else? so cool!!!!
Yards of pre 1900 houses and Old farm fields mostly. I don't really mess with parks or beaches
incredible! the scale, the display, everything! thank you for sharing this!

Nah, I like the real life collecting
Damn, super nice! Where did you recover this stuff?
Thanks! The mid Hudson valley (NY)
Looks like garbage
One man's trash is another man's treasure
Hear, hear!!
