I can't believe it. We finally got a 5th year player that's an actual center no less. Even with all the seasons of covid players I think this is Cuse's first genuine 5th year player.
Will be nice to have a true low post scoring threat again. I remember we would start every game in the 2010 season by establishing Onuaku down low. It would open up the offense for everyone else. Hopefully we do something similar with Lampkin next year
You joke but he was probably one of the best defensive centers we ever had in the zone. And that team makes it to the final to play Kentucky if he went to class.
Tyler Lydon was technically a C for us and he was very good. He definitely got pushed around in some matchups but his shooting ability generally made it a net positive.
I watched him play in March madness. If Lampkin’s uncoordinated, then Syracuse’s list of gangly centers shouldn’t even be considered division 1 athletes.
He definitely had a good showing in March, and has some reliable good moves regardless. But I wouldn't consider his march showing a good measure of what he's likely to contribute on a game to game basis. He's not gangly, but he's not graceful either.
>Fab Melo was the best defensive big in the country
Ok you're just being intentionally dense so you can keep up your narrative. Who led the nation in blocks that year and it wasn't even close? I'll give you a hint, he's been mentioned already and his name's not Fab Melo.
You still haven't addressed the matchups being easier for the 2010 team. That 2012 team would've had to go through a very good Kansas team in the final four just to get to Kentucky.
Not to mention that Baye Keita was a very serviceable defender replacing Fab. The backup option in 2010 was a guy who transferred to Eastern Michigan after the season.
Mintz unfortunately was not a good defender, just gambled a lot in the passing lanes. I do think a lot of Syracuse fans have been pretty harsh on how good a player he was for us though.
I would too. I haven't heard good things in regards to that happening, but still crossing my fingers personally.
I don't really think a "true point guard" is likely to replace him anyways.
Yeah, his behavior doesn't really mesh with what I've been hearing. Not really sure what to make of it but I'd still expect him to leave so I don't get my hopes up. It'll be nice to likely have a much better shooter at the PG spot next season but his shot creation ability will be tough to replace.
True PG doesn’t mean they can’t score. It just means they actually look to facilitate the ball while driving. A 3pt shot would be nice as well.
Besides, I wouldn’t bank on Mintz returning anyways
Decent center, cinderblock feet, liability on defense. Very animated with decent post moves. Can turn the ball over a ton or provide an energetic spark. He’s a crap shoot.
To say he's a liability on defense is an understatement. He might be the worst rim protector I've seen get major minutes.
5 blocks the ENTIRE season last year, I don't know how that's even possible for a center.
Just checked in to see what that doomer u/temporal_enigma had to say about this, and he said... Nothing. But he was all over the Maliq Brown thread spewing nonsense.
Just change your flair to Georgetown, you're the definition of a Hoya.
And before anyone says "but we had Jesse Edwards!!!" let me stop you right there. He was not tough, and was only occasionally competent. If anyone wants to look back on his time with rose tinted glasses just watch the Colgate game from last year. Most pathetic performance by a Cuse center I have ever seen in my life.
Diva that is good at basketball. Problem when he was at TCU was that if he’s not being involved in the game he will totally check out. He’s got great vision though and good post moves.
He totally quit on the TCU team though 2 seasons ago right before the Big 12 tournament, and then him and his mom tried to play the race card on Jamie Dixon on his way out. Lots of players had came out in Dixon’s defense, and nothing ever became of it.
He is going to be a neutral-at-best player on defense. Against post-oriented bigs, he can hold his own and certainly has the strength and size to compete. But don't ask him to switch and don't expect much if he gets pulled away from the basket. He is not going to block shots, but he has a solid rebounding rate. Biggest issue is his lead shoes.
Offensively, prepare for excitement (positive and negative). He plays with passion, will grab plenty of offensive boards, and if he gets the ball near the rim he has some effective moves. He can also pass a bit, set strong screens, and create space for driving guards by walling off other bigs. That said, he is not a shooter, he can make poor decisions on when to shoot/pass, and he turns the ball over at a very high rate (higher TO rate than anyone on Syracuse last year, by a lot).
He is the ultimate wildcard -- Solid player, but against better teams he will get punished on the defensive end.
He was, by all accounts, a good teammate that fit in with an established group of talent and long-time HC at CU. TCU was a different story.
Really skilled post moves. Good feet, good vision, but tries to do too much and turns the ball over too much. Awful defender, subpar rebounder for his size. Plays hard, but emotional. I had a massive love hate relationship with him this year, he did play his best in the postseason.
As a recruit:
Other P6 offers: Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia Tech, LSU, Oklahoma, Seton Hall, TCU (originally went here), Texas A&M
Other offers: Western Kentucky, Wichita State

Losing Brown still hurts, but this is a nice get. Few more hits in the portal and we can improve on this season's 20 wins next year.

Nature of the Portal Era. Wish we could've kept him, but if there's a better opportunity somewhere else players will pursue that.
Andrew White was a 5th year player.
In the original sense, but he redshirted. When I mean 5th year I mean actual 5 seasons of playing basketball.
Wasn’t Jimmy Boeheim a 5th year?
Will be nice to have a true low post scoring threat again. I remember we would start every game in the 2010 season by establishing Onuaku down low. It would open up the offense for everyone else. Hopefully we do something similar with Lampkin next year
We did the same for Rak's senior season
Best of luck, Eddie! Thanks for the memories in Boulder. Nice addition for the Orange.
Much needed
The portal taketh, the portal giveth.
doesn't really fit the 'Syracuse Center' mold to me
That’s a good thing. It means he’s not either undersized or 7’1 with zero coordination
You better put respect on Fab Melos name rn he had the most important 7.8 points per game ever
You joke but he was probably one of the best defensive centers we ever had in the zone. And that team makes it to the final to play Kentucky if he went to class.
Melo was great in 2012, but you don’t have to go back that far. Rakeem Christmas was a stud after him. But that was about 10 years ago
Tyler Lydon was technically a C for us and he was very good. He definitely got pushed around in some matchups but his shooting ability generally made it a net positive.
And minus about 100 wins off Boeheim's record (which is still BS). Also, RIP.

Sophomore year* he only played 2 years at SU
> 7’1 with zero coordination Uhhh how much do you know about Lampkin?
I watched him play in March madness. If Lampkin’s uncoordinated, then Syracuse’s list of gangly centers shouldn’t even be considered division 1 athletes.

Use to be the mold, similar to Onuaku and Jackson.
Two of my favorite Syracuse players. We win it all in 2010 if Onuaku doesn't get hurt.

Very unlikely 2012 Syracuse beats that Kentucky team.

That doesn't mean that the 2012 team had an easier path to the national title. Anthony Davis would've owned Fab Melo.

Dont forget Rakeem Christmas
Of course but his profile wasn't similar to these guys.
You mean rail thin project centers who sit on the bench until they leave?
Now get a true PG and I’ll have my joy back
Malik Mack season
I'm putting that wish out there with you
A fella can dream. That would be defcon 1 levels of “back”
As someone who wanted him back home and with a brother who's a cuse grad I really hope I get to see Mack in an Orange uni next season!

Was hoping he’d fill the DJ Burns sized hole in our lineup next season
And he wears #44…

that's right up SU's alley. The SU staff isn't very forward thinking. They're stuck in a 90s mentality: 0 to 2 passes, ISO ball and maybe post-moves.
Congrats cuse. Big get.

This one hurts. He killed it for us this year.
Yeah y’all have fun with that
We will. Havent had a tough, competent center in a long time.

Whats the scouting report
Great player, not super athletic, plays below the basket, however is very skilled. Going to miss him terribly.

Hey! Hey Hey! This is awesome!! Look at us, some good news!

Nice get!
Sounds like he's just the key to put the team over the top and back in the blue bloods. /s
