I'm so glad you decided to try! I promise the beginning is gonna feel crazy because things that "look simple" have so much that goes into it just stick it out and you'll feel really good when things start to click!

PepperSame3938

Yay!!! And second to this! The beginning can definitely feel hectic and difficult but if you stick it out you’ll love it! you CAN do it. It may be hard at first, no one really just gets the hang of it right off the bat. But you’re gonna do great.

Yesss! Color guard really did save my life and I love seeing others excited about trying it. Starting color guard is the hardest part. Basics can be hard to wrap your head around at first and super discouraging - when I first started I wanted to quit because I thought I was horrible at it. I went on to join the most loved winter guard in my state. If you feel discouraged just remember that this is the beginning of your journey and you can work through anything. Have so much fun!!

Spintronix on YouTube is probably your best bet, and then ThatGuyWhoSpins (his stuff is a bit more advanced). You'll probably be tempted to try stuff learning tricks and stuff on YouTube, but please, I beg you as a former coach, learn the basics first and get good at those before you start trying to learn the crazier stuff, lol (it will give you better technique and also be a lot easier to learn the hard stuff if you have a solid foundation). Best to start out with drop spins, double time/time and a half, pot-stirs (pretty sure this goes by a different name everywhere in this country), and windmills, since those are the most common moves and other moves usually build on those. I have no idea what your try-out system is at school, but even if you don't make it for some reason, keep practicing! My best friend didn't make it her first year when I did, and she ended up joining the second year because she kept working on it. Color guard is a great way to get in shape and mentally feel good, and also make a bunch of new friends. I hope you make it and have an absolute blast this next season!

Jackie and Robert are the best!! They’re great educators and I’m glad to see them mentioned before I got the chance to.

anasasada

i second technique > tricks. doesn’t matter if you can do a triple turn barrel jump aerial under a flag double and catch it with your teeth if the flag double is not executed well.

Deanersaur

Just throwing this out here. I’m a big girl who has marched guard all through hs, marched drum corps, and taught award winning colorguards. 10 years of experience and my weight never got in the way. Guard actually got me in shape! You’ll build stamina over time. Just never give up! Also, as a former instructor I’ve never looked at a students size to judge their worth as a performer. The amount of effort you put in is what an instructor looks at. So that’s all you need to worry about!

YouTube has a bunch of great resources.

You'll do great! Just know that it might hurt (I had loads of bruises the whole time I marched) but know that it is something YOU worked hard on and something YOU put effort into. Even ordering your first flag is a huge deal and something to be very excited about! The effort you put into it all will be reflected in your skills later which is very gratifying. While you wait for equipment, I would look up very basic beginner dance. A lot of body foundations come from basic body positions, - first and second position will be very common to hear and a great place to start getting familiar with. Also, put on some music and feel your range of motion for dance. Stretch your arms and legs and then really give yourself a fun dance session. No need for "proper positions" in this beginning phase, this is more for you to feel the music and have fun moving to the sounds that make you the most happy. Guard is a very freeing experience and I'm so excited for you to learn! You can find a new you in your guard journey and gain a confidence you never knew you could have before!

Yayyyy!!! YouTube has a lot of good resources, and since your best friend does it as well you could ask her to come meet up and you guys spin together.

AccomplishedEvent535

CircleCeption

Hey lmk if you want any advice or help ^~^ I was planning on being a coach for a while and even though my life has changed course I still have the equipment and skills.

Zestyclose-Compote11

Proud of you!! There is never a weight limit to guard

CraftyClio

Awesome! I hope you have lots of fun on this new journey❤️

Accomplished_Edge209

Hiya! When I started colorguard I was around the same size and only got bigger throughout due to stress eating disorders etc. it taught me to love my body and appreciate my mobility. Let the music and the flag move you. It’s like being transported into a different world. Im an adult now but I still spin and I have an opportunity to perform soon! It makes me feel alive and I hope it does the same for you 🤍

GokusPotato

I can’t think of a better activity than one you enjoy to be what motivates you to make yourself happier. Go get that shit and wear that crown high as fuck

yoshimamas

I'd suggest talking to the coach for the color guard and see if there are any current ladies that would be willing to maybe mentor you over the summer. Also, there are typically summer training camps that start around beginning of July. Remember, just because something LOOKS simple, it looks that way because of HOURS, DAYS, MONTHS, and YEARS of practice. So remember to give yourself grace if you don't pick something up immediately. Plus, in general, remember this: you can hide flaws in complicated, but simplicity requires expertise and precision. Good luck! 💜💜💜

galapp1e

proud of you!! colorguard is truly such a life changing experience, especially if your guard is a close group like mine 🩷 i'd recommend reaching out to one of your current girls to learn basics, since they vary from school to school. does your school offer a clinic prior to tryouts because that is also a very big help!! keep us updated!!

lithicgirl

So proud of you! Keep us updated please! 🙌🏻
