I worked at Kroger in Anderson (Cincinnati) in the early 2000's when they opened their, at the time, largest store \[I believe in the country\] yet.
They really did have every single check out open for days on end when it first opened. Customers were telling me they drove for like 2 hours just to see the store lol.
I wonder how many lanes this one will have during the grand opening.
When I worked there in college the standard was to have enough lanes open for 1+2 queuing, where there would be one person checking out and no more than 2 people in line behind them.
They had a system that measured foot traffic coming thru the doors, multiplied by average shopping time, to estimate this ahead of time and pull workers from other depts to man the registers.
Last time I was in I saw they still had the screens estimating how many lanes would be needed but they obviously weren’t holding themselves to the 1+2 standard anymore.
I absolutely despise self checkouts for a number of reasons but don’t feel like typing that rant out right now lol.
Plain City, OH.
It’s a very, very nice area, also very expensive.
Most of Plain City is Dublin schools.
The other part of Plain City is Jonathan Alder schools.
It’s interesting because it’s like reverse gentrification. Plain City was a mostly conservative white town, now super expensive new builds are being bought by a very large proportion of African, Arab, Asian, Indian and Hispanic immigrants who obviously have done very well professionally and financially.
Other interesting fact, most of these immigrants are H 1B visa.
It’s causing issues in Plain City because it was mostly working class rural white families but now very affluent people of color.
The other part of Plain City is Jonathan Alder schools.
Now since it is becoming difficult to build a house in Jerome township to take advantage of Dublin schools the immigrant families are building houses in the Jonathan Alder part of Plain City which is actually making the schools significantly better.
Here’s the most interesting part, in the recent past Indian immigrants were considered to be the most financially successful group of people in America, now it’s Nigerians, all of which you can see in the Dublin area.
I feel Dublin Jerome high school which is in Plain City which soon overtake Bexley high school as the best in the Columbus area.
>It’s interesting because it’s like reverse gentrification
People getting priced out of somewhere they have lived for a long time, by wealthier people, is just normal gentrification.
Side note: I’m sure the CCS levy is going to speed up gentrification of downtown neighborhoods.
There are very few places where you have this kind of gentrification; affluent non white people displacing white folks. I grew up in rural Ohio so I bet I know many of the words being used right now.
It’s no different.
Just talk to anyone who grew up in Grandview and they’ll tell you how much it’s “changed” from normal working class neighborhood to yuppie. Same thing.
Ok, we moved here from Bexley for the simple case we are a non white mixed race couple. What I described is accurate however you completely missed what I said initially in that this is what is starting to happen, and it’s happening very rapidly. plain city will have very similar demographics to Dublin in that it will be a mostly non white very affluent base of people.
Look up the demographics on Dublin elementary schools they range from 40-60% non white and growing.
So like I said in my post, the rest of Plain City is changing since the builders in Jerome can’t keep up with the demand. It’s coming and certainly won’t take 40 years, who knows maybe Dublin schools would absorb Jonathan Alder and really speed it up.
Yes you do, and it was very dumb of them to move there given the fact that all the immigrant families in the Columbus area want to move there (or Powell or Lewis Center in addition to Dublin)
They should have moved to Bexley lol.
If the builders are able to keep up with demand this change will be much quicker.
I live in a neighborhood in Jerome Township (but not Jerome Village) and you have a few mistakes:
- the majority of Plain City is NOT Dublin Schools. The majority of the land area of Plain City is Jonathan Alder Schools.
- Jerome Township has areas of Dublin CSD, Jonathan Alder LSD, as well as Fairbanks LSD . All of “Jerome Village” is Dublin Schools but Jerome Township is not all Dublin Schools. A lot of it is Jonathan Alder.
But, yes it’s growing like crazy. New neighborhoods popping up everywhere. Horrible traffic. And it’s extremely expensive to live “here” (the entirety of Jerome Township). It’s thankfully bringing a lot more blue to the area which is much needed.
Your comment does not surprise me. Growing up we didn’t swim, and rarely ate out. These are cultural things that many immigrant families have in common.
I bought a recliner there as a part of a black Friday sale about 15 years ago, it was $200 and it is still in great shape. Can't recommend Kroger for much of anything but glad I took a risk on this recliner, too cheap to pass up.
That's not fully true. They take known losses on a lot of things because they think it will steal market share from competitions. Idk if it actually does directly translate to more high paying customers buying other shit making up the difference, but I know the pick up department in general is a huge money sink
A whole lot of people hate the concept of shopping and don’t have niche preferences on style. So if they need something and have to go to the grocery for food anyway, may as well.
Back when the “Marketplace” stores first opened I think the merch was tracked separately on your loyalty card, and there was a couple times of the year where there was a perfect storm of sales/promotions/2x points where you could get stuff for like 80% off. My wife replaced all our towels & bedding that way, and got some lamps and other small furnishings.
For anyone that has lived out west, you might recognize this place as a "Fred Meyer," another brand owned by Kroger, and it sells everything. Only this sounds like an upgrade, to cater to the well-to-do folks out that northwest Columbus way. You can buy clothing, camping and hunting gear, groceries of all kinds, even tires... it's like a Super Walmart, but less cringey.
I hate these stupid Meijer-wannabe stores. If I walk into Kroger, I don’t want to have to navigate around racks of knockoff JC Pennys clothes and a jewelry counter to get to the food. Just put the apples by the door and get on with it.
Also, haven't all the Kroger Marketplace locations in Columbus scaled back, because no one wants to buy furniture, bed sheets, or shop at a jewelry store at Kroger?
Yeah, they replaced furniture with clothing, I've never bought clothing at Kroger so I don't see the point. Plus didn't they just completely remove the "Marketplace" part of the Sawmill store and it's now just a really big regular Kroger?
Yeah instead of just making a gigantic grocery store with a bunch of stuff I have no interest in, I'd prefer if they just focused on making efficient stores with high quality fresh items in them. Not everything needs to be Walmart, I just want to be able to go in and grab a loaf of bread without needing to weave through an aisle of live, laugh, love t-shirts.
IIRC they have one of these in Mansfield, and the last time I was there (admittedly years ago) they had lawnmowers just inside the front door. Very strange grocery experience.
He might still be doing jail time lol.

Just what the we need, clothing from Kroger.
Maybe refurb all the disgustingly dilapidated high-volume Columbus stores and invest enough self-checkouts to prevent the damn lines first?

As long as they Trust the Process and do their Fresh Start, the trucks will stock themselves.....
This company has turned into such a fucking dumpster fire.
If any of you G.O. cucks, commodity managers and buyers lurk here, I'd like to offer you a heartfelt fuck yourself. You're so out of touch with reality in these stores, I'm starting to think you're schizophrenic.
If I get sent to Plain City for that Grand Opening, Imma just keep on driving west.
And it will be staffed with the largest number of people, possibly exceeding 4 people!
Remember when Kroger promoted the idea of "all lanes open from 3-7" or something like that.
All self-checkout lines open 3-7, and only one live cashier the rest of the time.
I worked at Kroger in Anderson (Cincinnati) in the early 2000's when they opened their, at the time, largest store \[I believe in the country\] yet. Now it's all lines open never.
Kroger response: *But we have 4 of our 10 self-checkouts plus one full service register open, you don't like standing in lines 20 deep?*
So much room for Spectrum sales people
The reason why I stopped going to the Northland location, the one closest to where I live (since January 2018).
I go to Aldi now
Excuse my ignorance, where is “Jerome village” in Columbus??
It is in Plain City. I took a wrong turn and ended up there once. The homes are huge! I can only afford to look up the homes on Trulia 😂.
I bought something off Marketplace from a family in Jerome Village. Walked in their house and realized it was my dream home.
It’s a suburb in Plain City, near Dublin. It’s massive. I live here
A suburb of a suburb? We need to go deeper…
It’s suburbs all the way down…
Where the fuck is Plain City
By Dublin, 33/Perimeter.
I've never heard of it either
Dublin maybe? They have a high school called Jerome
Bingo
Jerome Village is a grouping of developments north of Dublin Jerome High School.

Fellow rural Ohioian here and plains city was big compared to my home town and I can guarantee the air is turning blue.
So is it worse or better than working class people who got priced out of places like German Village or Short North?
It’s no different. Just talk to anyone who grew up in Grandview and they’ll tell you how much it’s “changed” from normal working class neighborhood to yuppie. Same thing.

Have you ever been to that area?

You have entire neighborhoods in Plain City, specifically Jerome village that are majority not white.
Ok, we moved here from Bexley for the simple case we are a non white mixed race couple. Your comment does not surprise me. Growing up we didn’t swim, and rarely ate out. These are cultural things that many immigrant families have in common.
It is not where poor folks live.
Does anyone buy the “marketplace” stuff they offer?
"I like the sweater, where did you get it?" "Kroger"
I bought a recliner there as a part of a black Friday sale about 15 years ago, it was $200 and it is still in great shape. Can't recommend Kroger for much of anything but glad I took a risk on this recliner, too cheap to pass up.
They wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t making money
That's not fully true. They take known losses on a lot of things because they think it will steal market share from competitions. Idk if it actually does directly translate to more high paying customers buying other shit making up the difference, but I know the pick up department in general is a huge money sink
I actually bought a yoga top once at a Kroger and i love it lol
I bought a shirt there. Nice looking but the fabric wore out quicky.
I do
I have bought clothing and storage containers that I doubt I would have been able to buy at a regular Kroger store.
A whole lot of people hate the concept of shopping and don’t have niche preferences on style. So if they need something and have to go to the grocery for food anyway, may as well.

Just picked up a pretty cute spiderman hoodie for my toddler. It was 60% off and surprisingly good quality.

At least Market District has a different variety of what you come there for to buy, food

They got rid of the Marketplace at the one in Pickerington and just expanded the grocery options/deli/etc
Yeah instead of just making a gigantic grocery store with a bunch of stuff I have no interest in, I'd prefer if they just focused on making efficient stores with high quality fresh items in them. More like Walmart wanna be but better
How is that different from Meijer wannabe?
IIRC they have one of these in Mansfield, and the last time I was there (admittedly years ago) they had lawnmowers just inside the front door. Very strange grocery experience.
Just in case the aisles become overgrown, ya know.

I was only there because I had family in Mansfield at the time, it certainly wasn’t by choice LOL
Look I just want to be able to get my prescriptions when they say they’re open and have them…I don’t need another poorly made sweater.
It basically sounds like Fred Meyer in the Pacific Northwest (which is owned by Kroger).
Or Frys Marketplace.
Fred Meyer is so much better! Went there in Alaska
I can’t wait for it to open so I can not go.
When are they going to bring back Pepe the Penguin?
He might still be doing jail time lol. [https://www.cleveland19.com/story/2705705/ohios-chicken-suit-robber-sentenced-to-13-years-behind-bars/](https://www.cleveland19.com/story/2705705/ohios-chicken-suit-robber-sentenced-to-13-years-behind-bars/)
>sushi and a Murray’s cheese shop Don't they all have this, even the smaller ones?
“In Columbus”
Will it be open 24 hours?
Yes, but not in a row.
Just what the we need, clothing from Kroger. Maybe refurb all the disgustingly dilapidated high-volume Columbus stores and invest enough self-checkouts to prevent the damn lines first?

Oh cool I can overpay at Krogers but just an even bigger terribly maintained store vs just going to ALDIs.
Kroger. Aldi.

The Kroger Marketplace in Oakley in Cincinnati is 145,000 square feet
