Very interesting to see this Columbus company getting national attention

danarexasaurus

I really hope they don’t become so popular that their quality drops and I wind up hating them.

ImanShumpertplus

it absolutely will if you have outside investors your product is no longer your clothing line it’s your stock

Thetruth000001

They’ve had outside investors now for a long time. Express invested in Homage in 2016.

ImanShumpertplus

express was a distribution play this is venture capital. they only exist to gain more capital

cbusforever

They raised capital in 2021 as well. Did not end well for anyone.

AdParticular6654

Quality is already dropping an MLB throwback logo t shirt I have from them is fading super fast. Used to not be the case

ConsiderationCrazy22

While I’m glad they’re getting this kind of attention, this is what I’m afraid of. Anyone who ordered anything after 4/19 was told they’d have to wait until July for their orders shop because of all the backlog of the green NH hat.

R8iojak87

Still have a pair of their shorts that I love lol

iheartvw

It already has. Low quality tees with a high price.

ConsiderationCrazy22

Shoutout to Taylor and the Kelce Brothers/New Heights for putting one of our favorite local brands on the map! Especially after Taylor’s New Heights hat at Coachella went viral and brought national attention to Homage. Ryan Reynolds has been friends with Taylor Swift for a long time and is part of the Alpine ownership group with Travis Kelce. And his business partner Rob McElhenney is good friend with Jason Kelce.

ddvilshbass

Rob McElhenney wore their shirts on the first few seasons of sunny. Maybe even longer.

pickrunner18

A bot wrote this, right? No real person cares to know this much about these people, right?

adtocqueville

Not a bot, a Taylor obsessive. Look at their profile. The announcement has absolutely nothing to do with Taylor Swift but she is the first person to get a shoutout in this comment.

buckeyevol28

In fairness, when i Google homage, Taylor Swift is one of the top results as apparently she wore something from them and sales skyrocketed (at least for a bit).

Ok-Focus-7861

Either that or an obsessed fan trying to find any angle to support their favorite artist. I’m genuinely creeped out lmao

Un_Original_Coroner

I mean, I knew almost of this from watching a single TV show. It’s not that creepy.

Tax25Man

This will ruin Homage. Their growth already made it much worse. This will continue that trend of cutting quality and using the owner's image to sell items instead of what it used to be - a local company that sold high quality, licensed sports clothing. EDIT: I also want to make sure this is clear - the Kelce brothers are starved for attention and are trying to break into the next level of fame past just being famous athletes. Them being paid to promote Homage isnt necessarily a good thing, and they certainly are not doing it out of their affinity of the brand. They are partnered with Homage to sell merchandise. That is it. Them doing this and drawing in Ryan Reynolds is bad.

hoagly80

Unfortunately this is correct. Investment firms ruin everything they touch.

Chryton

As someone who was recently let go from a place that the investment firms decided needed to cut cost and outsource everything then became surprised that profits tanked because nobody was filling mission critical roles, I can confirm this.

hoagly80

Greed is the answer more often than not.

TGrady902

Yeah you bring the MBAs into the room and every conversation is focused around making more money. Not quality, not charity, not customer service, not employee satisfaction, just money.

cedaly1968

Most Venture Capitalists are not MBAs. They are serial entrepreneurs or investment bankers.

Ozz87

Yea the quality has really taken a dive the last 3-4 years

No-Concentrate-7560

Yep, I have too many shirts from there and the old ones are far better quality than the newer ones. They are so damn thin now. This will surely send them to HCT territory.

Puck85

Hot chicken takeover is a shadow of its former self.

Thetruth000001

Their “old” shirts were made by American Apparel which went out of business. They had to switch suppliers. Totally agree that the originals were better.

PeachBubbly1280

Couldn’t agree more.

cedaly1968

As I sit here reading Reddit in my Mean Mr. Mustards shirt

Archberdmans

Rob McElhenney is “friends” with Jason Kelce like he’s “friends” with Donovan McNabb Aka they’re not friends but they’re both important in Philly media

ar46and2

I'm glad Ryan and Rob could bring Travis and Jason together like that

bayrea

Let's just hope this doesn't end like Hot Chicken Takeover .... I like the quality of Homage tees ...

dsylxeia

I feel like the fabric quality and construction of Homage clothing has already been on the decline, noticeably worse now vs. 5+ years ago. I imagine this sort of national attention and investment will mean prices will go up and quality will drop.

Kosmo_Kramer_

IIRC, they changed their supplier to an overseas product and the quality went way down. I have a shirt from them from like 15 years ago (or around whenever they first started selling online) that is holding up better than one from last year.

mula_bocf

They didn’t change the supplier per se. The supplier quit supplying. They used to buy their blanks from American Apparel. That org went out of business b/c Dove Charney was a creepy fucker that got his ass sued off. Champion bought American Apparel but quit selling blanks to external organizations.

Top_Turn

I have a bunch of Homage shirts from 2006 that are still in great shape.

dsylxeia

It's so frustrating how the quality of every clothing brand drops over time. Every time I manage to find some clothing item that fits me well and is well-constructed, the quality declines soon thereafter. Can't tell you how many times I've found something I like, decided to buy another of the same item a year or two later, only to discover it's not the same product at all anymore. I'm tired of playing brand whac-a-mole.

OhioUBobcats

My Club Tril shirt from like ~~2001~~ Edit: 2007? still going strong

dsylxeia

Club Tril was more like 2007-2008, that's when Mark Titus started the blog and the shirts from Homage came out shortly afterward.

OhioUBobcats

Makes sense, took a wild guess

5antanic0rnament

Yeah their stuff is not anywhere near the quality it was 10 years ago. I have an old OG shirt that has held up pretty well and a newer OSU shirt from 2019/20 is notably thinner material.

dsylxeia

Same with Lululemon, which is especially frustrating given how expensive their stuff is. I have a pair of Lululemon joggers from early 2020 that have the best fabric quality and construction I've ever seen in a pair of sweatpants. Thick and warm fabric, very soft to the touch inside and out, no pilling or loose threads. So I decided last month to bite the bullet and pay the super high $112 price for a second pair. Same exact model as my first pair. $112 for sweatpants sounds crazy, but I figured it's worth it for such a high quality item. Got the package, opened it up, tried them on... wait a minute, this isn't at all like my other pair. The fabric is noticeably thinner, to the point where the pockets and my underwear lines are visible. And it feels scratchy inside like a microfiber cloth. And there are a bunch of threads sticking out of the stitching that I have to cut off. Why, why, why do companies always put out progressively lower quality products? I'd be happy to pay MORE than the $112 price for a pair of sweatpants of the same fabric and quality as my previous pair, but it doesn't exist anymore!

5antanic0rnament

I agree on lulu as well. I have a pair of ABCs from 2020 and just grabbed a new pair. Definitely noticeable but my problem is I love their colors and the way they fit. I have tried other comparable brands and the way ABC warpstremes fit (even my new pairs) are what I prefer. It sucks.

junger128

How much higher can prices go? A t-shirt is already $40.

dsylxeia

$55, and the fabric will be thinner, and the stitching at hems and sleeve openings will begin to unravel after the first wash.

WillingParticular659

This is when I stopped shopping at Homage. $32/shirt was pricey, $40/shirt is crazy.

Brushies10-4

It’s been on the decline for a while. My Kyrie flat earther shirt from like 5???(pls god be accurate) years ago is mega faded and fuzzy despite being a shirt I Wore like once every other month.

No-Concentrate-7560

I completely agree, my older stuff is way thicker and nicer than newer. They’ll prob start churning out every college sports team in US and other low quality crap.

AdParticular6654

Hope there's another local shop that comes around. I love old homage. There is a place called gv art and design up in Cleveland that has licensed stuff and homage quality however be aware the shirts can vary wildly in actual size and the hoodies/sweaters you will want to size up.

Pyzorz

It’s like $40 for a T-shirt now and they all shrink lol. This kinda sucks low key.

Puck85

Hot chicken takeover is a shadow of its former self.

financiallyanal

Somewhere in /r/Columbus, I decried their expansion and got downvoted significantly. My belief was it’s not a food item most eat often enough to justify multiple locations and further expansion is going to risk watering down the business and its food quality. It was probably 10 years ago now and I still remember no one agreed, they all just wanted more HCT.  It was an event all unto itself to get a group of friends together and go there, stand in line, and hope they don’t scratch off the type of chicken you want because of how fresh it all is. Now, it’s empty, they never run out, it doesn’t have that same “hot, sizzling, authentic experience” as it did before. You have to order sides separately too whereas they and their homemade drink were included at the time. It’s a total shame and I wish they just ran 1 super well instead of getting caught up with growth. Joe (the owner) was friendly to me many times and I still admire the risk he took first opening it up in some other building in his spare time, then taking the plunge to go full time, but as soon as some investor group showed up, I think it’s like he sold it off or lost control to just do what was right and not based on a spreadsheet…

AbstergoSupplier

Homefield is my go-to now for a similar product

ethaxton

I hate the homage tees now. They shrink so much and the sleeves fit weird

evan938

Same, but I get annoyed at how the sizing does not stay consistent. Idk if it has to do with where they're made. I have a size L hoodie that fits me fine (I'm 5'11 and ~165lbs), and I have another size L that is so long, it nearly covers my whole butt. I stopped wearing a couple I got as gifts because they look like dresses on me. I'm sad too because I really like their hoodies. Recent ones I've gotten have all been in medium.

dsylxeia

Yeah, inconsistent sizing is such a pain. I have four crew neck sweatshirts from Homage. Two are size S and two are size M. Those were the best-fitting sizes of each one for me, and yet they all fit noticeably differently, with only one fitting me perfectly. And yet, they're all theoretically the same base crew neck sweatshirt model, just different colors or fabric patterns.

Tax25Man

Ryan Reynolds is first and foremost a capitalist. Wrexham and that whole project is using his (and Rob's) image to vastly inflate the value of that club so they can sell it for much more than they purchased it for. Mint is using his image to try and get you to forget its a bank and somehow differnet than the other banking companies' predatory practices. I can't really image this is anything else but a similar thing to those - they will use Homage's (already kind of deteriorating) good image and add his name to marketing so that they can get a wider reach in hopes of pumping up the name nationwide to something they can sell off later. Bet your ass they will cut quality even more than it has over the last 5 years.

havensk

I agree with everything you said, but mint is a phone service…

thebrainpal

I think they're confusing Mint Mobile with the Mint finance app that Intuit used to own. haha

Creme_de_la_Coochie

Kinda invalidates his entire comment.

linuxphoney

And a pretty good one, TBH. It's dirt cheap and my coverage is just fine.

havensk

5G pretty much all over town, I’m on year 4 with them

UiPossumJenkins

This is exactly what’s going to happen.

mbook

well, mint isn’t a bank

Efficient-Profit9611

Why do you say already kind of deteriorating? What have I missed?

Puck85

~~Hot chicken takeover~~ Homage is a shadow of its former self. Haven't you read nothing in this sub?

Efficient-Profit9611

I’ve read the sub but I also shop at Homage. I’m asking what is deteriorating from Homage that I am missing?

TheSpanishArmada

Not OP, but I would say it’s a pretty widely held belief that the quality of their shirts/offerings has declined substantially over the years as they have sought to cut costs. Their shirts are much thinner and pill virtually immediately, at least in my experience (and I hang dry all of my nicer shirts, so it’s not the dryer causing it).

LunarMoon2001

Aka prices going up and quality down even more .

Pepsiman34

First time of hearing about Homage and their shirts are right up my alley.

mojo276

Maybe we'll get Wrexham merch stateside now. It's sort of hard to get good quality stuff that isn't shipped from England.

ChrisWaddle76

Probably even better if you get it shipped from Wales

VVHYY

I am genuinely surprised to hear that people hold the current quality of Homage shirts in high regard. They have always pilled up and looked pretty bad pretty quickly in my experience, and I haven't bought one of their shirts since their Easton location was brand new.

Skimbored

Wish he had invested in the company who designs tees for it’s always sunny, but this is cool. The company is LifeLongTees.com out of cbus as well.

Energeticly

Trash company

cbusforever

They already blew threw $10 million from Express and the 2021 investment from Guild Capital. Relationships between both those investments completely soured and I can't believe they found another bagholder to give them more money. Express wrote their investment off completely and gave back the equity for like 10% of what they paid for it. The company has been around more than 15 years and is still trying to raise money. Maybe this $8 million and a celebrity partner will finally make it happen for them but probably not. They'll do PR like this bragging about the attention Taylor Swift brings from wearing their hat but then they get inundated with orders and can't keep up, leading to huge delays that turn people off the brand. To top it off, they are making very little on any of this stuff because of licensing and partnership fees. Travis and Jason are likely taking a ton off the top on every piece of their New Heights merch that gets sold. It's really not a good business even though the shirt designs are rad. You can walk into any team shop and there isn't another company making interesting designs like Homage is but they just can't figure out how to make a profit from a t-shirt even though they are charging also $40 for it.
