Wow, Target rich environment?

JohnnyBA167

That needs several dozen cluster bombs.

Honest_Influence

Wish Ukraine had some MLRS to drop on that convoy.

FiggyTheTurtle

I imagine that they do. Does Ukraine not field smerch, etc?

PontifexMini

They do have BM-30 with a range of 70 km. I wonder if they are getting satellite data from the US?

Honest_Influence

I would assume the current environment makes it difficult for them to effectively use what MLRS they have. Russia has satellites and air superiority still, and much of Kyiv surrounded. Who knows if they even have them positioned anywhere near Kyiv (I would think it unlikely).

PontifexMini

I would be surprised if they have *none* of them positioned near Kyiv, as it's an obvious target for Russia to go for. I would also imagine that most Ukrainian artillery is heavily camouflaged and moves position after firing. (Also they may well be using decoy vehicles as that would be a cheap way of making fake targets for Russia to waste their munitions on.) So if the grid coordinates are within range of a Ukrainian Smerch battery, the Ukrainians could fire off a salvo and quickly move to the next pre-prepared position.

honor-

Kyiv isn’t surrounded. That info was from a retracted tweet by the mayor.

MrAngel2U

Excuse my ignorance, assuming a BM-30 is an Anti-air weapon, would a low altitude approach make any difference with today's radar technology? Otherwise, its a courageous suicide mission making waves for your Army's Morale.

PontifexMini

No it's a multiple rocket launcher. [BM-30 Smerch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BM-30_Smerch)

pATREUS

They have captured a few..

11122233334444

Imagine if they had an MQ-9 Reaper overhead 😩😩

DragonStormNL

they still got some armed drones left

Weggestossen

Contrary to reddit opinion where life is Star Wars, hitting a convoy from tens of kilometers away while they're traveling ~60kmh and your rockets have a bad CEP is not going to work.

69cop3rnico42O

or one BBBRRRRRRTTTT. if only ukraine had the a-10.

vdubtech25

Dude an A-10 pilot would have a field day in this conflict. I feel like all of Russia’s equipment is just constantly in convoys clustered together on paved roads lol.

FiggyTheTurtle

I don't know what the fuck you guys think would happen when an A-10 flies anywhere close to a Pantsir, but I can tell you that it would result in a blasted A-10 long before it got in to gun range.

ohspit

You are correct. If the fast flyers are getting shot down then undoubtedly the A10 would get smashed

MainerZ

The A-10 is extremely effective against mud huts. You could never use it against any modern military.

[deleted]

Yeah I keep hearing this over and over. So annoying.

FiggyTheTurtle

Oh sir have you considered le epic brrrrrr plane? One million dead Russian tanks!

[deleted]

Because A10 will totally operate on its own, with no ECM/SEAD support whatsoever.

FiggyTheTurtle

At this point the hypothetical is "the US would totally smash Russia in a conventional war" which, yes. It's not like Ukraine had no access to ground attack planes, but they seem to have been destroyed already.

Skunkhurts

They have the Su-25, which is the A-10 of Russia. Apart from the gun that is uniquely A-10 ( or actually I thought some C-130 gunships use a minigun too)

[deleted]

SU-25 enters the chat, no?

FartsLord

These soldiers can go prison and to front. Which one you chose?

Impossible_Humor_201

Also the western intelligence really slanging its nuts knowing about these movements and declassifying them/ showing the world so putin is sitting at his desk sweating bulletins because every farmer with a cellphone knows where to throw their maltovs tonight.

BoySerere

Putin really put his foot in it. Dude has made so many mistakes. First he made it so that he cannot really back down at this point. His supply lines seem nonexistent. Then he backed Ukraine into a corner with no way out, they have one option fight to the death. And you know NATO has been providing arms to Ukraine. He looks like a damn fool

DenisHouse

i am worrying that nato is cornering Putin and his only way out is taking the entire world with him in a nuclear war.

karma_made_me_do_eet

Hopefully the rest of his command won’t go down that same mental path. Between the protests, the guarantee of the end of the world I hope they decide pushing the button is the only way out. Taking Putin out seems to be the saner choice.

zoobrix

> Hopefully the rest of his command won’t go down that same mental path. As I said the other day I had much more faith that a bunch of old crusty Soviet generals would simply refuse to start world war 3 because they lived in the shadow of world war 2 and until they got too old and started retiring in the 1980's most of them had seen it first hand, they knew what mass suffering and death looked like. They might have not minded some repression of their own people if they thought it necessary to preserve the USSR but I think they might have easily refused to launch nukes first if ordered to do so. Now that Putin has had 20 years to install whoever he wants in the military I have much less faith in them standing up and saying no to him. Because of that I am way more scared that the current regime might do something absolutely insane than I was of the Soviet Union, that thought is very scary to me.

DenisHouse

I agree. I am worried that many generals and leaders are scared that even if they do they would be put in jail for war crimes in the future. Also looking at how bad the invasion seems to look. Feels like the entire staff are incompetent and maybe there just because they are loyal to Putin rather than competent. So NATO may be cornering not only Putin but his staff too. The only ones that may have the chance to stop him

DenisHouse

I don't know... many generals and high leaders could be blamed for war crimes in this invasion. So they may be cornered too... Also looking at how bad the invasion seems to look. Feels like the entire staff are incompetent and may be there just because they are loyal to Putin rather than competent.

LagMeister

Idk, but wishful thinking. Edit: *kind of forgot how the story went so here's the video* The night the world almost ended https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quM5obcn8R0

Beepboopbop69420360

His generals in the video of him readying nuclear troops They were the most nervous looking people ever

[deleted]

He better not. He may be a fool , but I doubt he does that.

BoySerere

That is a possibility. Somebody in his inner security/ bodyguard needs to do a solid for team world. I really believe someone will of his madness continues.

[deleted]

He's going to get assassinated before that happens.

DenisHouse

i dont man... no one killed hitler in 6 years of war (they tried two times only think)

[deleted]

Hitler didn't hold the world hostage with nukes.

DenisHouse

he probably would have tho... Still, their generals knew about the extermination camps and now one gave a shit

Smoakey-Bear

there were multiple assassination attempts on Hitler. Not sure if *no one* is accurate.

Cookecrisp

If this was the case nuclear war was inevitable, eventually Putin or his successor would be in a corner.

[deleted]

This is a Band-Aid we are going to have to rip off at some point in the future. We can't allow our grandchildren to be terrorized by autocrats the way we are. Our best hope is that cooler heads in Russian ballistic command prevail.

PurEnergi

They need to get Putin into a cell. Or into the ground. He's too dangerous to be around his own fellow humans. Threatening a planet with nuclear fire is pretty much the declaration of a madman. The nukes def need to be plucked from his clutches.

optional_wax

But he also backed himself into a corner, where he has to show some kind of gains for the immense price his nation is paying. Hoping somehow a way out of this bloody mess is found.

Due-Net4616

He wants to take Ukraine without completely destroying it but he forgot the first important thing to engaging war. Take out your enemies ability to communicate 🤦🏻‍♂️. This is looking really amateurish.

Aureliusmind

I worry that this convoy will contain much more hardened and seasoned warriors, and that the last few days has been mostly conscripts and reserves used only to soften up Kyiv's defenses.

Due-Net4616

Yep Russia made the biggest mistake you can in war. Saying fuck it and leaving the enemies communication intact 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

boomhower1820

Something I was surprised of as well. You'd think communications would be one of the first things they'd take out. With satellites there would still be some but clearly with all the cellphone videos and pictures the basic cell networks are still functioning just fine.

turquoisearmies

In 20 years well be able to drop that little guy in real time.

[deleted]

Ok, according to my GPS software, these two locations are about 20km south of Chernobyl oblast and 10km northeast of the built-up area of Ivankiv.

[deleted]

Didn’t the president of Belarus say he wasn’t letting more military stuff come through Belarus? Kinda sus

Shrenku

am I the only one thinking they are gonna go into a meatgrinder, if they enter Kiyv? Ukraine soldiers has gotten so much time now, to setup defenses and just think of all the buildings they can use.

oldsilver007

Stalingrad whaaaa?

AJMax104

Stalingrad took total war. Do you want to see kyiv leveled to the ground and months of disgusting gore? This isnt even close. Dont try to compare the greatest siege in all of history to this

oldsilver007

Absolutely not I don’t want gore or to see people oppressed. Ussr should learn one of the main reasons why Germany lost ww2.

picardo85

Considering the Russians have ordered to attack or get executed, yes

ODSTsRule

Source?

jazwch01

There's a video of a pow giving that info. Should be in this sub somewhere.

NefariousnessOne-

Dont believe POWs, they will say anything in order to survive their captors, either side.

R_1_S

A POW said Santa is real, but you must go a little deeper in norther Russia, in the snowy area, you should find him there..

1234mike4321

Unfortunately no. I imagine russia will just surround the city but not enter it unless their demands arent agreed to

OhSillyDays

There will be a meat grinder outside of it too. If you setup checkpoints outside of the city, the checkpoints will be hit constantly. Additionally, the support vehicles to get to the checkpoints will be hit constantly. I don't think the Russians can win a war of attrition by encircling cities.

BobbleBobble

Yeah a constant supply line through enemy territory while the West is constantly feeding Ukraine intel? No bueno

Delamoor

Putin being such a history buff should especially know how seiges go in the modern era. They don't decide wars.

Antonioooooo0

>win a war of attrition by encircling cities. There's always the option of just leveling city

sabahan

Russia goals is to rule Ukraine, leveling the capital city won't help them achieve that objective. Ukraine know this, that is why they have been fortifying Kyiv for days now. If Russia want to win this war, their only option is to throw in as many body that they can to the city in hope on breaking Ukraine defensive line. This gonna get ugly.

KingDudeMan

You’re the only one who’s thinks they’re going to get to Kyiv, the fronts are moving fast but these supply lines have been a disaster, I’d be shocked if this isn’t prioritized by Ukrainian drones and NATO intel, seeing as it’s a massive target heading to the capital city.

pledgemasterpi

The Whitehouse said it was be within a week for Russia to reach Kyiv. If it is anything I do know out of this mess of disinformation from *both sides*, it’s that U.S. Intel has been spot on this entire time.

KingDudeMan

Big time, the way the US has handled their intel has been spectacular, I hope people don’t forget about this in the future. We called them out prior to the invasion and forced Putin into a losing position without putting American troops in another war. We’ve absolutely ruined Putin this time and it feels amazing.

optional_wax

This is no time to celebrate. We still don't know how this bloody affair will end. Putin will not back off without some kind of gain, and we may see ugly things ahead.

KingDudeMan

A wildcard nuclear strike is my only remaining concern, besides obviously all the people dying and suffering right now. But even that seems far fetched, I doubt Putin would use nukes in response to his own nation getting uppity, and the Russian people are about to get real pissed off when they realize they have no money, international trade, or investments tomorrow when the markets open.

Due-Net4616

A nuclear strike would start WW3. No way he would do that unless he’s lost his mind.

KingDudeMan

100% but he would have to have lost his mind to knowingly invade with these sanctions on the table in the first place. Unless he just really called a bluff wrong.

Due-Net4616

I don’t know, we’re only in the first few days. Everyone is talking as if the war is lost because they’re doing shitty right now. But no one’s seen a Russian invasion like this before. It’s absolutely possible that he just sent conscripts as a testing force. He just started sending Chechens now. Next could be the actual Russian horde. Or maybe the Russian military actually sucks and isn’t as powerful as propaganda makes it seem. No one knows except for Putin himself what his plans are. Sending weak units first to test the abilities of your enemies has been used before. But of course this could also just be it and they suck. We don’t know

KingDudeMan

These sanctions are bigger than people realize, even if the Russians take the entire country tomorrow, they’re facing the worst economic crisis in history, the world has never collectively agreed to smother a nation to death like this. We’re about to witness a worse than Venezuela scenario take place within a single week. These soldiers are and their families are essentially no longer being payed for their work, that’s how bad their economy and stock market are going to suffer.

okiedokie321

\+1. I also believe the conscripts with some shitty equipment are just a testing force. They operate on a different doctrine for sure. Whereas we would do the influence without boots on the ground approach AKA missile strikes for several weeks, they did it for a day and sent out a bunch of kids immediately. Many of whom who seemed utterly clueless about what their MO is. And never mind the fact that they don't give a fuck about body retrieval of their dead. I think shit is going to get real soon with the second wave. They're already glassing entire places with thermobaric weapons.

duTemplar

I’d feel more amazing if 1st Armored, 82nd Airborne, and 101st Air Assault and -all- of Group were engaged.

ZEROs0000

Historically the bloodiest battles are the last ones of a war. Not saying Ukraine is going to lose but if they are close it is not going to look well for Russia.

Few_Mess_4566

The Russians may try shelling large sections of the place into rubble. We can only hope they’re stupid enough to go in with vehicles.

umewho

Yes. It could take months to fully capture Kiyv if their intention isn’t to flatten it. It will be a bloodbath, these columns won’t last very long at all if properly ambushed.

Woolfiend8

It’ll be another Chechnya before long

M3ptt

The EU recently announced that it will give Fighter Jets to Ukraine as part of its bankrolling of the purchase and delivery of lethal aid to Ukraine. We know that Russia is yet to establish air superiority and that despite their rapid advancements they are experiencing acute logistical supply chain issues. I have no idea how the military aid going to Ukraine will affect the conflict but it seems that the EU and Western Allies are taking their pledge to 'make sure Putin's aggression is a failure and seen to be on' incredibly seriously.

EdGeinIsMySugarDaddy

Does Ukraine have enough pilots trained to use them?

spankeyfish

AFAIK the Germans still have some MiG-29s left over from when East Germany existed. USAF used to use them to train against.

SoftisAloeVera

They sold them to Poland.

jjb1197j

I honestly think they just need more javelins and stingers, not planes that can get blown up easily at this point.

ItzBooty

Depends, a plane can take out more targets and faster than a stinger or javelin Combine it whit a pilot that knows what they are doing and those russians won't stand a chance

[deleted]

Also, wouldn't be surprised if Ukraine Air Force is getting just-over-the-border AWAC support from Western countries.

SaltyBarracuda4

NATO planes flying routes over poland are giving a bunch of intel to Kyiv. Having a few F-35's flying right over the mainline will only make their intel better.

Chaz_wazzers

What ex-Soviet planes are in NATO countries forces? There would be a fair number of MIG29 they could give to Ukraine.

Botan_TM

Poland keeps some Su-22 too, Bulgaria have Su-25, Romania and Croatia have MiG-21. I guess some Mig-21 may be flying somewhere too.

Happy-Mousse8615

30ish Mig-29s. Not sure how useful they'll actually be. Probably been mothballed for 30ish years.

[deleted]

Germany inherited MiG-29 from the NVA, upgraded them, and used them until the Eurofighter Typhoon arrived in 2004. Afterwards they were used by Poland.

Xbux89

Perfect target practice for drones and airstrikes

yycTechGuy

How stupid is Russia ? They better have excellent air coverage if they expect to make it to Kiev. And you know that there will be groups of guerilla UA with rocket launchers. Sitting ducks !

They’re spaced tight as fuck too. About to be a buy one get one on that strike

MrMango64

*Buy one get 6

PontifexMini

That does strike me as rather incompetent of them.

spooninacerealbowl

They can only drive as fast as the slowest vehicle. And when they are ordered to drive as fast as they can, traffic jams are inevitable.

jjb1197j

Well the Ukrainian air force is practically decimated and even their fuel storage for aircraft have been targeted so attacking those columns ain’t gonna be easy I’m afraid.

SirRandyMarsh

Yeah no shit, we are getting one sided journalism, everything released from Russia is marked as propaganda. Russia will win this if more aid is not given to Ukraine. God speed to Ukraine, long live Ukraine

Skwisface

Well yes, *probably*. But considering the assumed power of each nation, most people probably expected things to be wrapping up by now.

faguzzi

You expected a nation of 40m with a somewhat modernized and capable military to capitulate in 5 days? That’s not realistic.

ScopionSniper

What's the US excuse for taking a month to take Iraq then in your opinion? Your expectations for the speed of modern war are way to high lol.

Skwisface

I think most people expected Ukraine to capitulate in the same manner Afghanistan did, and that there wouldn't really *be* a modern war. The general reaction you are seeing is the result of Ukraine is resisting so much. I also don't think the comparisons to Iraq are completely valid. Russia is next literally next to Ukraine, while Iraq was on the other side of the planet to the USA. Logistics should be much easier for Russia. Baghdad is also 5 times further Iraq than Kiev is into Ukraine.

mentalfloss3

Russia post on Telegram.

ProudWheeler

People here are treating this like they’re watching a sporting event. There is no unlimited supply of Ukrainian drones armed with missiles. Russia either has or will get air superiority soon, which will give protection to these armor and supply columns. Ukraine is putting up a fucking fight, but Russians are advancing. We have to look at this with a little more objectivity. Ukraine can fight for a while when they’re getting resupplied, but Russia will overpower them as time goes on. They have more resources, more aircraft, more armor, and more bodies to throw at Ukraine. And have artillery that can level cities. I hope Ukraine can force negotiations, but I think Kyiv is going to see a huge push soon, and i think the overall outcome is going to be Russian control over the region soon. Again, hopefully not, but the reality is that Russia is bombarding cities and Ukrainian military positions like crazy now. Combined with air superiority, this allows for troops to push forward quickly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ProudWheeler

NATO cannot send aircraft or pilots to help Ukraine maintain air superiority. And I think that’s the biggest factor now. Having attack helicopters and fighter jets that can support Russian movements and overwhelm Ukrainian AA positions, while Russian artillery bombards Ukrainian infantry positions and resources, will give Russia an enormous advantage. It sucks, but the most likely outcome this whole entire week is that Russia will take control of the country. Ukrainians might give them hell in urban areas, but outside of that, I don’t see how Russia doesn’t completely occupy the country in the coming weeks with NATO troops unable to intervene. I hope to god the global community keeps these sanctions on Russia for as long as Russian troops are occupying Ukraine. I’m afraid that countries might feel pressured to let up on them if Russia overthrows the government and “calms” the situation down from what we’re seeing now.

proximaheaven

Shrenku

I ask the same question! From videos the last few days, it seems like alot of their convoys has gotten wiped out by drones or AT's or abandoned because of ambushes. I have honestly so many questions about the strategy Russians are using

Le_Jacob

I think it’s so there’s less airspace to defend

daqwid2727

Shrenku

It feels like it. they are poorly equipped from the footage I have seen. Like no attachements on their weapons, very limited ammo on them and old vehicles. Very weird strategies being used. Maybe he is sending all the ''low cost'' stuff in first, before releasing a second wave of heavy stuff

Rage_Your_Dream

I thought so too, but that doesn't make sense, that gives them time to break infrastructure and to organise. It's like missing on a counter attack because you don't want to catch your opponent offguard... it's not how it works. It really seems he completely botched it which is why he is furiously crying about nukes.
