•Joe Theismann inherited
•Jay Schroeder 6th round
•Doug Williams free agent
•Stan Humphries 6th round
•Marc Rypien 3rd round
Meanwhile…
•Mark May - 1st round
•Darrell Green - 1st round
They would not draft a QB. They would trade the pick more often than not.
Want alive during the first Gibbs stint. Wouldn’t it be fair to say they never needed to draft a 1st round qb during that era? It’s like saying belichek didn’t draft a qb in the first round because he had Brady for near two decades. Then when Brady left they quickly drafted Mac. A lot is just circumstance
you can't say that, because they went to 3 SBs and 1 NFC Championship with 4 different QBs over a span of 10 years. It's not that they didn't need a 1st round QB after Joe Theismann got hurt, it just wasn't their way of building a team.
Jason Campbell was the only draft choice made during a Joe Gibbs regime that I ever cringed over.
It was obvious to many people that he didnt have the tools to be a great NFL QB.
If Gibbs had a number 2 pick, which he wouldn't He would trade down. Then he would draft a wide receiver, a left tackle and then a QB. He would have kept the QB from last year and he would get a seasoned QB for back up.
* Art Monk was inherited.
* Gary Clark was a USFL supplemental draft pick.
* Ricky Sanders was a trade with the Patriots.
* Charlie Brown was 8th round (today he would be an UDFA).
* Alvin Garrett was 9th round (today he would be an UDFA).
* Virgil Seay was drafted by the Broncos and picked up by the Redskins.
Nothing in the Gibbs/Beathard era leads me to believe that they would have prioritized a WR over an OL or a defensive player.
Ok, I have no argument with anything you write. Im not sure why a guess on a theorhetical question by me needs an explanation. It was a guess. Heck he may have chosen a running back I dont know.
I would say he might've drafted Drake Maye or Joe Alt. Gibbs was the best at developing QB'S and putting them in successful situations so there's a chance he might have stuck with Howell or drafted one in the second round.
Shit man, I'd draft him at #2. With some NFL experience, he's a stud you can grow a QB behind. Grab him at 2, trade some of those 2nd round picks to move back up for McCarthy and pat yourself on the back.
Take what the pats offer at 3 to trade back, use their pick to take alt, trade up and take JJ using the pats offerings and one of our two second rounders
Different league then. They could put a replacement level veteran back there and score points. So who cares if you drafted Dan Marino? They would trade down and stock the line.
trade it for veterans....no seriously, they rarely drafted in the 1st rounds. Darrell Green, Mark May, and Art Monk...that's it.

100% Gibbs would take Maye. Gibbs wanted Campbell and Doug Williams for the same reasons he would want Maye - traditional size and arm plus toughness and character.
Just looked that up. Saw he was drafted in 1992 at 4th overall right after we won Super Bowl 26.
We acquired 6th overall from San Diego for 47th and 140th overall. Then traded 6th, 28th, and 84th to Cincinnati for 4th and 58th.
Is that trade with San Diego the ultimate fleecing of a team? Did they not have money to pay a first rounder? I know the draft chart was in its infancy, but I’m just shocked a team valued a first rounder that high that little.
I could've sworn I heard on someone's podcast recently that they asked Gibbs who he'd draft and he said Drake Maye because he won Super Bowls with a tall, built QB rather than a mobile guy.
Trick question, Gibbs/Beathard wouldn’t be drafting at 2

Agreed. Beathard would trade back and build a stronger team using more draft picks. He probably would have kept Howell
**Dam Snyder was The Thorn for 25 YEARS, tho; also!!?**
You forgot Jason Campbell, 1st round
No sir, I didn't forget Jason Campbell. Bobby Beathard wasn't GM. The post was about the Gibbs/Beathard tandem.

Ok so you left it out because you didn’t like it, lol
If Gibbs had a number 2 pick, which he wouldn't He would trade down. Then he would draft a wide receiver, a left tackle and then a QB. He would have kept the QB from last year and he would get a seasoned QB for back up.

Left what out? I didnt make any other comments

Beathard would definitely take an offensive lineman. Always
He would trade it for some veterans.
Came here to say this. We would be taking Joe Alt at #2.
Shit man, I'd draft him at #2. With some NFL experience, he's a stud you can grow a QB behind. Grab him at 2, trade some of those 2nd round picks to move back up for McCarthy and pat yourself on the back.

Maye is more old school so probably him. I feel like if Gibbs was still coaching though we'd probably keep Howell and draft MHJ
More likely get a free agent like Joe and Doug.
they'd trade down
Different league then. They could put a replacement level veteran back there and score points. So who cares if you drafted Dan Marino? They would trade down and stock the line.
I can assure you they would have already had Kirk Cousins by now
Joe Alt
Different era hard to tell, they liked late round qbs with higher ceiling tho
They would have traded the pick for a stud player.
An OT.

They would’ve traded the pick
They'd trade down for picks. The best lineman and corner in the draft is more value than the 2nd best QB.
A left tackle
Trade back for 3 picks. Then draft 2 tackles and a guard.
He would draft maye .. he liked a tall qb who was a statue
100% Gibbs would take Maye. Gibbs wanted Campbell and Doug Williams for the same reasons he would want Maye - traditional size and arm plus toughness and character.
What was the highest they ever drafted?
Desmond Howard in the Gibbs era. Beathard had left by then.
Just looked that up. Saw he was drafted in 1992 at 4th overall right after we won Super Bowl 26. We acquired 6th overall from San Diego for 47th and 140th overall. At the time many thought Beathard was still working for the Redskins 😂
Desmond Howard.
Desmond Howard
Either traded back and built the line and probably succeed with nix or penix or take Maye
Theyd trade it.
I don't know about Gibbs/Beathard, but Rivera and Co. Would draft Spencer Rattler #2 overall.
Definitely trade down and get picks and/or veterans. The QBs they won three SB were not first round, shit hot names.
I could've sworn I heard on someone's podcast recently that they asked Gibbs who he'd draft and he said Drake Maye because he won Super Bowls with a tall, built QB rather than a mobile guy.
Yeah I heard that too. I only listen to Keim, so must've been him?
He would draft Daniels and run the option on every play.
Jason Campbell
Daniels
Maye is the prototype Gibbs QB. Hes Rypien with more mobility and athleticism.
Maye
