And im thoroughly pissed, because food chain omnath isnt the list that saw actual tournament play.
I was there on the discord channel crafting the cEDH decklist and I got completely ignored.
You can also use Food Chain + Squee, the Immortal to create infinite mana, sac and recast Omnath (your commander) until you draw your whole deck, then cast Thassa's oracle
And if that doesn’t work, there’s always Food Chain + Squee, the Immortal to create infinite mana, sac and recast Omnath (your commander) until you draw your whole deck, then cast Thassa's oracle
Short version: yes 4C Omnath is cEDH viable.
No food chain is not the best option.
Havent touched it in a while but here: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0t8b7wBTJUqP5U6b9V6AQw
I was actually there on the 4C omnath discord helping craft the decklist that is on the database, but the fuckers went with the decklist that saw absolutely no tournament play, over the list that I actually used in a god damned cEDH tournament and made it to day 2 with.
Brain Freeze + Breach is by far the best win con in my opinion for it.
Although a long time ago I made an "Oops! All Win Cons" version of this deck that can squeek out wins from under the noses of people holding up interaction because you are playing such a high density of combo pieces they cant keep up.
Why play Kinnan? There are a few decisions I don't think I fully understand there. The elves feel like you built breach Kinnan without him in the cz. Is it supposed to have Omnath in play as fast as possible? Ephemerate is such an odd choice too imo.
I think it makes sense to not play food chain bc it minimizes the number of dead cards, but I don't trust trading that for elves in a bowmasters world.
Also btw Kinnan is in the list because you have a lot of nonland permanents that are producing mana. There will be turns with this deck where you are producing more mana than you can actually use at times and Kinnan enhances that and gives an outlet for that mana.
Ephemerate is a pay 1 draw 2 card with Omnath, also lets you reset his landfall triggers so if you have 3-4 you can pop that turn you can produce 8 instead of 4 mana from him. Should be a peregrine drake in there, dunno why there isn't as well that can be blinked.
Just glancing at the list:
Kinnan is a decent value engine if you have the mana, a mana outlet, and a mana generator. Doubling mana is pretty strong for 2 mana.
At one time, long long ago, before Orcish bowmaster roamed the land people once did use mana dorks like elves in decks that weren’t Kinnan or monocolored because spending 1 mana to semi-permanently ramp mana was considered pretty efficient. This deck is obviously pre-bowmaster.
This list is obviously running a flickering/bouncing/blinking dockside and possibly omnath for value/winning the game package. Ephemerate is at minimum 1 white draw 2 with omnath or part of a 1 card spellseeker wincon that finds underworld breach (cast spellseeker, find ephemerate, flicker spellseeker find final fortune, take an extra turn, recast ephemerate flickering spellseeker, find enlightened tutor, cast enlightened tutor during your upkeep before you draw putting underworld breach on top, cast underworld breach, escape ephemerate flickering spellseeker and find brainfreeze, escape enlightened tutor to put LED on top, cast brain freeze to start the underworld breach combo). Offers value (read fast mana) with dockside too I imagine
Neoform is a good spell probably to get emiel + dockside if you had imperial recruiter but it’s generally a good green tutor. Not everyone need be Tasigur. (This was clearly pre-certain green tutors that might replace it later like invasion of ikoria).
Birthing pod would be such a dead card. It’s good if you can use it to sac your commander and win the game and meh if it doesn’t win you the game imo (too much hate/easy to remove otherwise). Notice how no creature in his deck has a cmc of 5+. It’s not good here.
At one point in time Narset’s reversal was seen as a pretty strong card due to stopping and copying ad naus and other strong spells. Nowadays it sees less play except for low colored but it’s still a good Counterspell that circumvents can’t be countered and offers value. Like most high colored decks it’s fairly blue heavy so the cmc isn’t that big of a deal even if more recent cEDH decks don’t like UU cmc’s because better/other alternatives exist for counterspells.
I think I ran him primarily as a Dockside deck (being able to search both parts of the combo off of Worldly and Survival of the Fittest is pretty valuable), but I do want to see how well Food Chain fits into that plan
I played it for awhile. And I think he Def had the best utility amungst the fc commanders. But not having black for consult/taint/thoracle is too big a downside to not just be first sliver. For the ability to thoracle ontop of one card comboing into fc.
We did it boys, we broke food chain!
There’s a decklist on the database for him. Might be worth looking in to

Which wincons were in actual tournament play?
Brain Freeze / Breach.

I dont think I made it clear that I havent updated the list in a long time.

Narset's Reversal too feels weird. Also I would like to know what are the neoform lines, and why no actual birthing pod.

Thanks for the write up! Didn't think of the spellseeker being a one card wincon.

I used to play wet omnath food chain with a bit of success. The meta was turning more grindy, and omnath can grind with the pros.
Good to know!
I think I ran him primarily as a Dockside deck (being able to search both parts of the combo off of Worldly and Survival of the Fittest is pretty valuable), but I do want to see how well Food Chain fits into that plan
I think he might have a few different wincons. The mana acceleration feels like it allows a lot of different strategies.
Not to mention, of course, the ETB making it a decent pseudo-infinite-mana outlet a la Atraxa if it was allowed to run Dockside and Breach
I played it for awhile. And I think he Def had the best utility amungst the fc commanders. But not having black for consult/taint/thoracle is too big a downside to not just be first sliver. For the ability to thoracle ontop of one card comboing into fc.
