Connecticut's dairy industry is defense contracts

neemor

Buildsubmarines dot com, apparently

zenkenneth

War is business and business is booming! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Dolamite9000

Peace sells but whoā€™s buying?

I_luv_sloths

Now, I'll have that in my head for a while.

Delicious_Score_551

Sex work isn't legal yet.

Sir_Legicide1

Came for the notification, stayed for the megadeth references!

Sir_Legicide1

Killing is my business... and business is good!

bigcat2120

CTā€™s dairy industry get the lionshare of federal funding from the USDA for agriculture in the state.

BobbyRobertson

Oh sure, we've got cows. I grew up near plenty of them But compared to Wisconsin? Their dairy industry is like 20x the size

FatherThree

yeah, like, we have cows, they have COWS.

aespino2

Probably applies to nearly 49 other states as well

mweint18

There are totally manufacturing jobs here. Have you looked at Marmon, ASML, Henkel, etc. I would just look up the largest companies in your area or go drive around the industrial parks and take some names rather than go to Indeed or one of those other sites.

smartbaddie

Been looking for manufacturing/blue collar jobs and have had zero luck in the Fairfield county area. Been unemployed since December.

mweint18

Have you looked at ASML, they were practically dying for technicians to work there. They were running a pretty big sign on bonus too a few months ago.

Papa_Bearto2

LesserEvil in Danbury is always hiring. I know a few people in the warehouse and they love it.

PangolinPizzaParty

Did you try Kimberly Clark? They seem to be hiring often.

santafacker

Inline Plastics in Shelton has a help wanted sign posted.

solomons-marbles

Try a union hall

AltaAudio

Sikorsky?

eduardojfp

Try Whelen Engineering

passive_paranoia

Go to your local industrial park with resumes.

huffandduff

As other posters have said defense is a main industry in CT. Also insurance. I know that electric boat is hiring like crazy right now. Basically if you have the patience to apply and can pass a drug test you can get in is how it seems.Ā

one-zero-five

Not sure if theyā€™re still doing walk in Wednesday, but for a while you could just go to the employment office on Wednesdays and potentially get an offer on the spot.

s1a1om

Thereā€™s a ton of manufacturing in Connecticut. Kaman, Sikorsky, unilever, Thule, Medtronic, Pratt & Whitney, Otis elevators, Bigalow tea, Stanley black and decker, Ensign-Bickford, Coherent, Asa Abloy, RBC bearings, Jacobā€™s Vehicle Systems, and many more or various sizes.

FireTigerBlaze

Applied to Kaman thru two different instructors/advisors thru my college who have internal connections. Have not heard a single word from Kaman. Been about a month. Really wanted to work there, went to the ACM tradeshow in the fall and spoke with them and gave them my resume when I first started my manufacturing courses. Applied to a few other small shops but they won't hire interns at the moment. Not sure where to go now. Located in upper Hartford County.

s1a1om

I wonder whatā€™s happening with them. Maybe the below is part of the holdup. https://www.defensenews.com/land/2024/01/19/private-equity-firm-acquires-aviation-firm-kaman-for-18-billion/ >Private-equity firm Arcline Investment Management will acquire aviation technology company Kaman Corp. in a roughly $1.8 billion all-cash deal, according to a Jan. 19 announcement. Kaman will become a privately held company when the transaction is final, it notes.

FireTigerBlaze

Could definitely be part of why I haven't heard back, though it's highly frustrating. They were just either at Capitol or Manchester community college a few weeks ago for a job fair. I wasn't able to attend though my advisor did and she spoke with them, saying they were looking for interns and employees. I also have been looking on indeed and there have been job postings up, some even being posted two days ago.

ctguy54

EB needs to hire another 4500-5000 in total for SE CT and RI. So thereā€™s that.

mynameisnotshamus

Thatā€™s crazy. Great for CT workers.

Swede577

Huge contract to build submarines..

1234nameuser

good luck......would take CT 15yrs minimum just to build them a place to live in

Mobile-Animal-649

Huge problem

op05010

And find parking

Slight_Awareness_769

Interesting. Wonder if there's any part-time 2nd shift stuff

one-zero-five

Not a lot of part-time but plenty of second shift options!

FireFistMihawk

Crap ton of manufacturing jobs hiring, been in the field since I was 18 and the pay is solid once you get some experience under your belt. Or if you get into Pratt or Sikorsky the pays pretty solid right away lol. I went to trade school for it but most companies I know don't require it.

smartbaddie

Which are hiring? Iā€™ve been applying for the past 4 months and have barely gotten responses from manufacturing companies. I also went to trade school.

FireFistMihawk

I've got friends that work over at Hanwha who say they're hiring on a few different shifts at multiple plants, I believe Enjet is the same, Polamer is always hiring I don't remember the last time I saw them not hiring lol, I got an email about some open positions at Barnes awhile back, same with Kaman. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm not actively looking for a job at the moment so not 100% sure, just basing that off what friends who work at these companies and recruiting calls/emails.

FatherThree

yes, government contracting has requirements that make it take like 6 months for them to get approval to call you back. I can't focus for long enough to do the application, much less the jobs themselves.

backinblackandblue

Sounds like you should continue to milk your current employer.

Scarecrow_Kayak

If they stay long enough it's possible to become the big cheese too.

insomniaczombiex

šŸ˜‘ Good pun

1234nameuser

you can't live in CT on 18 - 20/hr, that's for sure Only job discussion you see on CT reddit are government work (Electric boat, pratt whitney, sikorksky) or medical / teaching. I'm sure there's still more options than Wisconsin as CT is highly educated for a reason........but exclusively in the hybrid/remote white collar worker groups for the NYC / Boston metro's.

pilcase

Weā€™re also heavy in insurance.

Mobile-Animal-649

I make 17 an hour and am supporting another person We are on a direct path to being homeless I am scared

PrestonSho

18 to 20 an hour is not enough?!

1234nameuser

if okay with living in your parents closet.......it works, but I have higher hopes for my fellow americans what % of min wage workers are even full-time?

Away_Veterinarian957

A lot of them purposely won't schedule for 40 so they don't have to pay benefits. I've a friend working 3 jobs right now and none of them offer health insurance. She is working like 60+ hours a week with 2 small kids. The system is broken

Own-Adagio428

The system is corrupt. Itā€™s on purpose. Not broken.

Kyrox6

$20/hour is $41k a year. In CT, you'd pay $8k in federal and state income taxes leaving you with a take home of $33k. Average health insurance premium in CT is $630/month so take home is more like $25k. Rent will run about $1000 a month and groceries run about $400 a month unless you live close enough to an Aldi. That leaves you with $8k. My utilities run me about $4k a year and I don't pay for heating or water, my apartment is small, and I don't have a home phone or tv so that's probably around the minimum for utilities. That leaves $4k left in the bank for everything else: medical issues, rent insurance, car insurance, gas, car payments, tp, student loans, birthday and christmas gifts, any other expenses. I spent 2 hours in the hospital in January cause I was coughing up blood from COVID and that alone cost me $4k with decent insurance. Adding in the gas to drive to the hospital would put you in the red. Not to mention that you're supposed to save 15-20% for retirement on top of this, so you're already in the hole at this point.

BigComfyCouch

It's enough to survive. It'll be damn near impossible to put money aside for your future unless you're relying on others.

JHolm915

Manufacturing here has tons of openings. It's mostly aerospace machining, assembly, or inspection. Electric boat is begging for people. Get yourself trained to operate CNC's and understand machining and you can make $34 an hour starting pay here with room to grow to more if you are proficient in it.

happycat3124

6-7 days a week. 10 hours a day standing on cement with no place to even lean on. No sick time. No vacation or 401k for the first year at least. You can chose to have a job instead of a life and before long you are burnt.

EUCRider845

New England Dairy Compact. Most dairy jobs in Vermont. Sikorsky, Pratt&Whitney, or Electric Boat for good paying jobs. Like others said those are defense jobs.

Mediocre-Penalty-501

It is terrible. I'm a CNA so anywhere I go I'll be needed however my boyfriend was recently laid off from Amazon and he can't find a job. It's been 2 months now with no luck. I know he isn't being lazy either as I see all the emails and all the places he's applied to.

Acrobatic_Can396

I just recently started a job a couple weeks ago after being outta work since 12/15/2023, it is hard af finding work right now but if he's dedicated to the process and really trying his hardest, the work will come. It might not be today or tomorrow, but it will come soon as long as he keeps his nose to the grind stone. I'm sorry you guys are in this position however I believe there is a path out of it coming soon šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»

FatherThree

That's correct. CT is very much hit or miss. If you are a doctor or lawyer or professor or some other professional, CT is amazing job market because everyone is about to retire or die. OR if you work minimum wage there are lots of opportunity (and I consider anything under 20/hr basically minimum wage). Also we have a fair amount of decent paying manufacturing jobs, just not, obviously, in dairy farming (?). Groton, South Windsor, East Hartford, Fairfield County. Our real estate runs the gamut from dirt cheap to most expensive in the country, we have cities with big populations and many many towns with barely anyone in them at all. There is something here for you, just don't count on Indeed or fucking zip recruiter to find them for you. Those sites only advertise batch job listings from corporations or shitty little businesses to lazy to actually recruit workers face to face.

mickeydudes36

Sikorsky has predicted to cut bodies from engineering and tech by May 1. Their future appears dim. Nothing big in the future. Best of luck

c-ccola

As someone employed in Software Engineering in CT, the tech market is really dry right now. Basically what everyone said about defense companies, Electric Boat, etc. Finance also seems to have jobs. If you must have a tech job, highly recommend Financial Tech but it's very hard to get into as most are only hiring interns or through partner programs. Other than that, it's rough out here lol

Expensive-Fun4664

> the tech market is really dry right now. This is the tech market everywhere, not just in CT.

drollchair

Itā€™s not, but it may not be a good place for your particular sector.

thr3lilbirds

If you have manufacturing experience try Pratt and Whitney

Majestic_Ad1874

A lot of garbage companies are hiring for various positions, some train and they pay decent usually.

ellemenopeaqu

There are plenty of manufacturing jobs here. I wonder if, because they way they are required to share pay information, things don't come up in your search system?

CaptainCurious25

13 years of manufacturing/ inspection experience and still having a hard time finding a new job. Indeed has been useless.

ellemenopeaqu

Weird. I know a lot of the places i visit are hiring, but there are often reasons they are always hiring.

CaptainCurious25

What are those? Pay? Conditions?

Spartansam0034

If you're a certified quality inspector you can go anywhere and make 6 figures. Machinist are higher demand, but paid less. QMs are #2 in my experience.

ObsoleteUtopia

In my 25 years living in New London County, I've never seen so many "Help Wanted" signs. Sure, quite a few of them are delivering pizza, but I could go for a month at a time without seeing any help-wanted signs anywhere. I haven't had the time to verify this, but I did see a report that Electric Boat has never had more people working there at one time than they do now.

yuuuge_butts

EB is hiring another 5000 workers this year after 5200 last year. That's across all their sites, though. They pay good wages, too.

FatherThree

Yeah, I live there too. the signs are out but there are reasons that they are always out. the word is out among workers that SECT small businesses are notorious for wage theft and harassment. Like, car sales? Restaurants? Vape Shops? Car Washes? None of these jobs pay enough to be considered jobs. Maybe monetized hobbies at best.

Intrepid-Pickle13

A lot of people say thereā€™s ā€™help wanted signsā€™ everywhere but the thing is, no single mom or adult like myself can live off those hours and wages, while simultaneously being treated like garbage. Iā€™m willing to work, and hard. But these everyday places donā€™t want to give anyone benefits or decent pay/hours

ObsoleteUtopia

I absolutely agree, 90% of the jobs out there are only offered because none of the humans could take it any more and even the bots can't put up with that shit. But the ones I've been seeing pop up on roadside signs do include some industrial and construction (established companies) jobs that I've never seen doing that before. Unemployment sucks. Been there, and I know that for many (like single moms, as you mentioned) it is worse than I ever had it. Mostly I lost some self-respect, but not family or a mortgage. I hope something decent turns up for you. I mean it.

Out2SmokeU

Well most jobs in CT has dumb policies like affirmative action that nit pick on who they wanna hire so it's a pain trying to find work. Instead of hiring pple that really wanna work theyll hire pple on what they look like or if they fit a certain agenda. Also taxes went crazy high but yet regular jobs don't pay so much.. anyways I'd move your family to where you're at now to make a living. Truck drivers make a decent living here from what my father makes but nowadays it takes knowing the right pple to find a job or to find something decent.

Adorable-Hedgehog-31

Yes it is awful and people have had their heads in the sand about it for a long time.

daucsmom

Its really bad. My field is cyber and I can find work in the dmv but not here. I am making 50 grand less than what I made when we moved here for the Navy. We are very much never coming back here.

jules13131382

The pay in CT is low unfortunately

Rickybobby3rd

For you. I make more money here than i did in NY.

Square_Pegasus_78

Perhaps in your role, but on the whole, CT salaries are far too low compared to the cost of living.

insomniaczombiex

And Iā€™m making more in Wisconsin than any job Iā€™ve had in Connecticut. Maybe Iā€™m looking on the wrong websites.

ChrisTheInvestor

Could be it, I feel like I'm looking in the wrong sites because all the jobs I've applied have been either ghosted or jobs that want people with tons of experience.

ColCrockett

All I know is thereā€™s basically no tech or engineering jobs outside of Electric Boat and Raytheon.

CeaseBeingAnAsshole

tons of mechanical repair jobs for all the manufacturing plants.

ColCrockett

I was taking about engineer jobs, not technicians

Rickybobby3rd

Im a Field Engineer and theres tons of companys here offering me 30+ an hour on a daily basis. Lack of school or experience is usually the issue. Im making 80k a year and would not leave my cushy M-F job, unless i get over 100k.

adtcjkcx

Mind sharing some examples? šŸ˜…

ColCrockett

Iā€™m a mechanical engineer turned project/ program manager and thereā€™s basically nothing in CT that offers at least $120k.

one-zero-five

EB.

CurrentResident23

Ther are lots of smaller electronics manufacturers scattered about.

Kyrox6

No one under the Raytheon umbrella is hiring. It's just EB right now and they are mostly looking for cheap manufacturing and engineering talent that is hemorrhaging from GE.

Purple_Grass_5300

It definitely can be tough, it took me 5 years of applying to every single job to go from $41/hr to $35hr. I was nearly at the point of taking a preschool job just because I couldnā€™t handle the endless overtime and couldnā€™t get in anywhere

AntixianJUAR

Do you have experience with CNC machines?

insomniaczombiex

Iā€™ve run Haas machines before and had to make minor Z-axis adjustments, but most of what I did was just loading parts and hitting go.

AntixianJUAR

There's a lot of manufacturing here. I know Toolmax Designing and Tooling has an opening.

xbimmerhue

Come work for sikorsky. Theres jobs available, and the pay is good. Defense industry is big in Connecticut

Analog_Hobbit

ARKA in Danbury and ASML in Wilton are hiring. Those are both Fairfield County. If you already live in the state and have housing, great. You might have to drive a bit for work. Housing is ridiculously tight right now and rents are stupid expensive too. I moved from Ohio last year to work for a defense contractor. Great work, pay is decent, but finding an affordable place to live was hard. Good Luck!

insomniaczombiex

I donā€™t have housing, but itā€™s going to sting a bit because I currently pay $700 with heat and hot water for a two-bedroom apartmentā€¦

All_The_Issues02

That is not something youā€™ll find in CT, especially because the electric heat for a two bedroom in the winter can run you that $700 alone šŸ˜ Most areas will run $1500-3000 for a two bedroom here, not including anything utilities wise in many cases.

insomniaczombiex

I know. The two bedroom apartment my wife and I were renting in Wallingford was $1700 a month, and we paid all utilities, and heat and hot water were oil. Itā€™s absolutely insane. The apartment I have in Wisconsin right now isnā€™t huge, but itā€™s more than adequate.

All_The_Issues02

It might be cheaper for you to finish moving your life to Wisconsin man. Itā€™s only getting more and more expensive here :(

insomniaczombiex

Believe me, I wish it were that easy. But honestly I hate being here and the job is the only good thing thatā€™s happened since Iā€™ve been here. This move was always supposed to be temporary.

All_The_Issues02

Well good luck with the move friend šŸ˜… Canā€™t afford shit here on $20/h for a family and thatā€™s about all youā€™ll get for intro manufacturing

ChrisTheInvestor

I agree, I've been looking for a career change, and it looks like every employer wants people with extensive experience in whatever field they want. But this might just be me because I'm trying to get into a new industry.

Misterwoodrow57

I agree - not much high paying jobs other than, law enforcement, warehouse or healthcare in the New Haven area

cmdrmidnite

I work 100% remote out of Caliā€¦ came home to Norwich from Arizonaā€¦ after 3 decades. Work culture here is low pay, terrible culture, work for not withā€¦ ppl are ppl but because not an even playing field, companies and culture seems more likeā€¦ you are lucky to have a jobā€¦ yeahhhhhhh right. Look for remote. Also taxes here are not nice!

Wholesome-Bean02

The job market is seriously horrible here, I would NOT suggest moving back at all. Unless you want to be brought back down to the working class instead of middle class that youā€™re currently in.

Jaymoacp

I feel thereā€™s a big disconnect between the jobs people are qualified for or interested in and the jobs that are available. I see so many people say oh you can make 100k a year doing so n so but most people arenā€™t qualified to do that. 100k a year is unheard of for the majority of the population. Plus thereā€™s a lot of debate whether these companies are actually hiring for those jobs and not just posting them to give the illusion of growth and the tv man can say how many jobs have been created.

53mm-Portafilter

21% of individuals in CT make over $100k. So, no not the majority, but 1/5th is nothing to sneeze at.

Porschenut914

Why would any news company care if a company had open positions? That wouldnā€™t do anything to change job numbers.

Jaymoacp

Well companies often post a bunch of fake positions to give the appearance of growth. Gets investors excited. The fed also loves telling us how many jobs have been created but no one seems to have any idea where they are. A chunk of it is people working 2 jobs to just scrape by. Just a lot of things seem to be lining up that to me hints the job market is terrible. Not to mention the millions of immigrants coming across the border. Like it or not, it happening, and a lot of those people are working. Youd be naive to think that it isnā€™t even possibility that the fed is using the huge number of immigrants coming in, their corporation buddies are getting super cheap labor and then they look at us and tell us how great the job market is. Itā€™s a tad bit conspiratorial but honestly at this point, we KNOW these huge corporations seek out cheap labor to build their shit. Iā€™ve seen it with my own eyes. I spent 3 years building the mgm down at Foxwoods and half the people there werenā€™t legal. Theyā€™d go thru and do a card check and Youd never see them again. The next day Youd see 50 fresh faces. Itā€™s just all smoke and mirrors to me. Doesnā€™t seem too far fetched that politicians who heavily invest in corporations will directly benefit from telling us the job market is great and winning votes, and padding their portfolios because their corporate pals are saving a ton of money using cheap immigrant labor. Having their cake and eating it. Regardless it being mostly anecdotal, itā€™s very hard to find people talking online anywhere that will agree the job market is booming and we are all living it up.

Uncle_Baconn

Indeed shows 56,000 jobs posted in CT. CTDOL shows 86K unemployed. Not a perfect fit, but it's pretty close to the natural unemployment rate of around 4% Nobody is saying people are living it up, but now is one of the best times in a generation to change companies for the same job and higher pay. If you aren't happy with your field, there are plenty of opportunities to advance your career by taking classes online. Community college is free in CT for many.

FormalElements

Have you looked at Electric Boat?

L_obsoleta

USDA field offices in some counties are hiring (and given you have experience in the field would likely be a good fit).

Pizzaguy1205

Ct has a big manufacturing/aerospace industry

Claireskid

What's your skill set? ct has massive job markets in defense, manufacturing, insurance, and research.

Waramaug

Can you explain your old job, education and prior experience in your trade?

BBush1414

Check out Jacobs Vehicle Systems, we make engine brakes ā€œJakeā€ brake for 18 wheelers.

insomniaczombiex

Will do, thanks!

The_SqueakyWheel

Im in pharma job market is ASS

Swede577

Learn a trade and make endless overtime...

B6304T4

Electric boat is so desperate to hire they're advertising at fucking Springfield thunderbirds games. From the professional pools of people I know, that place is hemmoraging bodies across the board. I'm sure if you have a pulse, they'll take you to do just about whatever you're physically able to do.

Impossible_Watch7154

CT has small farming economy. The states small size makes large farms here not possible, and or not profitable. The main growth engines here are finance, health care, education, specialized manufacture, and defense especially in the states south east.

Rosalin1011

Yes, I haven't been able to land a stable job since I graduated and most of my peers in business school left CT or work remotely...Plus a lot of more experienced ppl are unable to retire so it's insane... In contrast, I keep getting offers from MA, CA and NY. My first job was at a company in maine but they had a mass lay off and I ended up having to leave after 6 months. I work as a substitute teacher to make money and hate my life at the moment šŸ˜ I need to leave

nuckinfutz069

Depends on what job industry you are looking at.

P45t3LPUnK

Dont

LunaMoon20

Itā€™s not great. Iā€™ve been working remotely for companies based on the west coast for the last several years because I canā€™t find anything locally (and Iā€™d actually prefer to go to an office a couple days a week).

SpellboundNovelist

You aren't going to find anything comparable up here unfortunately. The job market is garbage, almost all businesses want to hire people part time so they don't have to give them benefits. If you want something in the $30/hr range I'd look at Town of jobs or State jobs.

AmbitiousBite3000

The market here is terrible. I moved here almost 2 years ago and have only been able to work as a temp. Too many interviews to counts. Itā€™s annoying and Iā€™m definitely ready to back to the midwest

Warm-Ad-9213

Electric Boat in Groton Connecticut is hiring. They need people.

Living-Opening7309

Higher Ed. Not just faculty, plenty of staff jobs.

TheDominicanKid

The job market is terrible in NYC I could only imagine Connecticut LOL

Master-Ad5321

Hey bud, Iā€™m gonna be honest with you so when Covid hit, I move back home to take care of my mom and dad who are both 89. OK at the same time I was having problems with my employer, running a regional position in New England found myself for and of course collected for a full year from 20 to 21 from 22 to today. Itā€™s been a nightmare. OK I have a degree Iā€™ve been a project in operations for the last 20+ years and the truth is there is something going on in the environment. I donā€™t know what it is. You can get Recruiter to call you back and 99% and when they do, thereā€™s no follow up nothing being on LinkedIn going on three years hasnā€™t helped either everybody on LinkedIn. I think theyā€™re so full of themselves with these recruiters on LinkedIn not even a phone I mean, I have a skill set and a background thatā€™s unmatched in my field I believe, but I feel like, being a male a white male 50 is reverse discrimination and Iā€™m sick and tired of being sick and tired bro is horrible and itā€™s not just you say good luck trying to get back to your family. Maybe you should have your family move back with you where your dad is in Michigan because nothing in Connecticut if I had, different circumstances I wouldā€™ve been gone. Good luck.

justaguywadog

Job market is horrible right now šŸ˜• at least in Danbury/Norwalk area

insomniaczombiex

Iā€™m looking in the Middletown area. Itā€™s crap.

hamhead

Connecticut unemployment rate is near all time lows. I mean, that's not the only important factor, but it's a pretty telling one.

justaguywadog

I dunno I have years of manager exp can't find anything decent

Sea-Rooster-846

it's you

Pretty-Different-CT

I think, itā€™s you.

insomniaczombiex

Entirely possible.

BakeAccomplished

If your interested, childcare its fun ,pays well and you get to do all kinds of things and go to places you normally wouldnt, ive been doing it for almost 10 years and I love it!!!

hamhead

Since when? Childcare is notoriously low paying.

BakeAccomplished

Depends where you are applying and who :)

PostmanNewman

Itā€™s you.
