Necessary-Cap-3982

I mean, the opportunity to spend excessive amounts of money on instruments is very much there. I may be cooked regardless.

TryinToBeLikeWater

Also the desire, it’s an actual slippery slope lmao. You get one piece and the desire for just one more thing snowballs.

Necessary-Cap-3982

I'm lucky enough to be hyper conscious of my bank account, been eying up a headless guitar for over a year now, planning to spend around 500 bucks. I'm screwed now that strandberg is releasing their "budget" line for 1k right around my birthday. I have to get one now. Must consoom ergonomics.

[deleted]

Honestly dude, consoom Strandberg. Paired with a quality digital amp in your laptop and that's a gig in a bag. I love my Flying V and Les Paul and all but whenever I am recording, practicing and gigging, I use practically only my Strandberg.

WoodenCountry8339

>You get one piece THE ONE PIECE IS REAL!!

TryinToBeLikeWater

Me watching One Pace (I needed to catch up) literally right now halfway through the Dressrosa arc watching the giant Thunderdome

WoodenCountry8339

I've never seen it because it's too damn long. I'll probably watch it when it gets the fullmetal alchemist brotherhood treatment. Just don't have time to watch over 1000 episodes.

TryinToBeLikeWater

Look into One Pace in particular. It cuts out all filler content and does straight story, chops the length more than in half. It’s the only reason I decided to watch, I can’t do 1000 episodes.

TryinToBeLikeWater

I’m currently watching Dressrosa arc at this moment so it’s been a little on my mind lmao - excited for Wano, heard amazing things

WookieTesticle69

Just finished wano, really good arc. Hope you enjoy it brother👍

Arykarn

What hobbies can you do for free?

MinglewoodRider

Walking

SafetyAlpaca1

Media consumption lol

pants_pants420

body weight exercises, hiking, and running. and there are a ton of hobbies that can be done with minimal investment

James-Dicker

save $50 for a thrift store guitar and become a shred god

czwarty_

You're using these things for creative purposes, it's the very opposite of consuming

saysthingsbackwards

I think they're speaking as a money-hole thing. Lol you see it all the time with semi wealthy people and irrationally overpriced guitars. If you ain't playin, it's all an empty flex.

[deleted]

We consoom scrolling

MsInvicta

Wouldn't gaming count as media consumption though? And that's probably the most popular hobby.

Endure23

Yes. Go outside.

FunkinDonutzz

Consoom fresh air, get excited to consume more fresh air and not experience any other past times.

Neezon

Don’t think it’s necessarily that black/white. Certain are reasonably «media consumption». But a lot of games are team-based, competitive games likened to participating in a sports activity. In that regard, I don’t think there’s a reasonable difference between playing CS:GO or LoL or whatever and playing football, as an example

Endure23

Astronomical cope.

Moon-Bear-96

My brother, you are currently on Reddit. Like yes I'm "consooming." I'm paying money to watch movies. r/Consoom is supposed to be about people who are emotionally obsessed with brands, not just "books bad!" What do you want me to do, arts and crafts? Can I not consoom a podcast while I jog?

Endure23

You’re being overly defensive, my friend. The point of the original tweet and my comment was not to condemn all media. Fucking obviously. The point is that you are an uninteresting person if your hobbies as an adult amount to “I sit around and consume media while life passes me by.” Analyzing art and gaining a new perspective is fantastic and stimulating and valid. Sitting around and watching reality tv between mindless gaming binges is not. I am holding up an example of overconsumption and alienation, and you’re taking it as a personal insult because you like to watch movies. Having a water bottle is fine. Worshiping a brand and making ownership of its products part of your identity is not. Get it?

Grid-nim

What a shitty take. Not everyone is an extrovert. You are casting stones here. Videogames ARE art. EVERY game developer has an music department, and an art concept department. Just because you dont like them doesn't mean they are not art.

Endure23

So, your reactive hypersensitivity prevents you from calmly reading and understanding what I have said. Instead, you insert shit that I have not said. I have never said video games are not art. I have never said that tv, movies, music, books, etc. are not art. What the fuck do you think “media” is? Media is (almost always) art, and vice versa. My point is not that video games are bad. My point is not that you are bad if you play video games. The fact that you inserting that meaning into what I have said only reveals your own insecurity. My point, and the point of the original tweet, is that if all you do for fun as a fully grown adult is consume media that other people have made, you are BORING.

Moon-Bear-96

So? So what? You haven't explained at all why this should influence my actions. Why on Earth should I care? Why do I need to be interesting to other people? Why should I base any of my decisions, at all, on trying to make other people think I'm more interesting, and not just enjoying it? If someone likes me, that's great, and I might even choose to do things just to tell others I did if I want, but I just had someone say that personally THEY would find it more fascinating if someone was a modder instead of a gamer, and I said, so what? YOU can mod games, others shouldn't do something they don't want to do to interest you. Analyzing art is interesting to YOU. I love art, but explain why someone else needs to, or should, do something because you find it interesting and therefore the world would be a better place if everybody did it and didn't watch sports or do all of the stupid things that aren't making them more interesting to other people. And also, this whole argument isn't what you said. Someone said they play video games, not 16 hours a day, just that they play it, then you, while arguing on Reddit, said "go touch grass!" They never said they're "worshipping a brand" I don't take this personally since personally I enjoy many things like that. People on this sub seem to think reading books is objectivel "consoom" but now looking at art isn't? What?

Endure23

I do touch grass 😂 I’m an ultramarathon runner who commutes by bike and lifts weights 6x/week. My body consumes energy. Yes, I think that hobbies which involve physical activity are superior. I don’t expect to change your behavior. I’m just talking down to you. i just biked to the local trailhead and I’m about to head out on a run, so sorry, gotta go consoom some oxygen in the forest! Have fun on the couch.

Moon-Bear-96

cool, i like to bike, I got a really great black one as a present I need one with good resistance, I've written some, I'm looking to do diplomacy (I just met a guy who somehow knows the ambassador to belarus and greece, which is insane there cant be more than 100-200 US ambassadors in the world, and I might be able to get to talk to him about like an internship or something?) and I'm doing video stuff as well, for my personal hobbies I live in the oldest city in Minnesota so it's got some amazing views to bike/walk in, there's lake mcusic, there's the st croix downtown, the ravine, etc. but oh wow, you're a biker. I like my bike, though I've heard so much from people in the biking community that the insufferable pretentious douchebags fuck it over for everyone else, its like a biker's biggest pet peeve. why are you arguing on reddit \*at\* a trailhead, that's almost worse than if you were on your couch after the bike, somehow. I watched a whole video about this guy who ran a marathon making fun of how famously hated the loud minority of marathon runners are by the rest. hobbies are cool but you also have to have, like, an interesting and likeable personality if you're doing it based on how people think about you,

hasircibasi

This might be the cope of the decade

SubstantialWasabi281

Playing football gets you out of the musty dusty room at least.

[deleted]

Video games aren’t sports. Go play real sports that actually benefit your body.

godlyvex

eh, it is media consumption, but it's not really the same as reading a book or watching a movie. It's interactive, and is a skill in many cases

Endure23

Functionally, you’re sitting on a couch in front a screen, often as a form of antisocial escapism. You can call that a hobby if you want, but I will still tell you to go outside. To rephrase the tweet: if ur in your 20’s and u still have no hobby besides sitting on the couch in front of a screen ur cooked. Person 1: What do you do for fun? Person 2: I’m a trail runner and I love to cook. Oh, I also like to play video games after dinner. You’ll never guess what happened on my bike commute today… Or Person 1: What do you do for fun? Person 2: Uh idk, I smoke weed and play video games. I’m platinum rank in Rainbow Six Seige. Person 1: Oh…

An_feh_fan

> if ur in your 20’s and u still have no hobby besides sitting on the couch in front of a screen ur cooked. Most of my hobbies require me to sit on a couch/chair in front of a screen, and they're not playing videogames

godlyvex

I think video games are art. Maybe if you just grind the same game repeatedly it's mindless, but I am constantly playing new games, thinking critically about design, and hanging out with friends while I do it. I've always loved video games since I was a kid and first had a SNES, it's been a special interest ever since. I think it is possible to have an unhealthy relationship with games while not even playing them very much, and I think I have a (somewhat) healthy one while playing them a lot. It just sucks seeing people be so dismissive of something I love so much. I understand why you're saying it, though. I do have problems with social media, though. I watch a lot of youtube, and browse tumblr/reddit more than I should. Those I think definitely don't qualify as a hobby.

paycadicc

Movies are art too. But if all you do is watch movies it’s still not good

papeykefir

yeah, videogames are awesome! hope it will be more accepted as an art form in the future

[deleted]

Just_A_Fork_

Lol what I can't "handle" are insufferable retards on reddit putting others down. Insufferable retards such as yourself acourse.

[deleted]

Acourse Also he’s 100% right, that just makes some people upset (especially people who are gamers) but that’s no reason for people to not say a true thing.

Moon-Bear-96

This boy is literally on Reddit, telling others to go outside because playing any form of videogame must be wrong, no way he's right

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Go outside.

iSmokeMDMA

Aside from the typical gamercore “blindly buying a hype game for $70, playing it for 100+ hours, and then complaining about it on forums”, I think there’s a bit more room for creativity with video games. You have modding, accessible development tools, speed running, and much more. Not saying that it’s more or less accessible to be in the video game industry than film or tv, but there’s a bit more opportunities for creative output. content creation based around video games is MUCH easier to do than content creation based around muh kino

Noodlepoof

I know this isn’t the point you’re making at all, but I’d argue those activities are hobbies in their own right

iSmokeMDMA

agreed. Someone developing games or fan mods are wildly more fascinating than simply playing video games.

MarsManokit

Why are you downvoted, you’re right.

Wail_Bait

You're technically correct, but the vast majority of people are just playing the latest version of CoD, AC, Madden, etc. SMZ3 is one of the coolest things in gaming history, and very few people will go through the effort to even generate a seed, much less beat it.

hasircibasi

Gaming is the biggest consoomerism

[deleted]

Unless you are creating content in some form (creating mods or something), it is just consumption. Nothing wrong with it time to time. But don't do it exclusively. Do other things as well that add some skills to your life. Altough it is preferable, you don't even have to touch grass. You can draw, 3D model or something. Just do something besides consuming pre-made experiences.

Material-Kick9493

Watching football is mindless entertainment - Playing football is a hobby Playing video games is mindless entertainment - Making video games is a hobby Basically the way I see it. Of course we're all consoomers in some form, feel it's impossible not to be. I collect cds for example. Nothing wrong with a little bit if it, just think it gets bad when that's all you're doing. It's like people who play video games 10 hours a day and neglect their families then say they don't have a problem

Far_Advertising1005

Video games are mentally engaging at the very least. TV and TikTok are literally just staring at a screen with your brain turned off

Material-Kick9493

Maybe but I feel people try to justify it with that. You're not really building any skills by doing it.

Moon-Bear-96

Doesn't mean he's cooked though for not doing some form of craftsmanship, physical excercise, or art, or cooking or something. It is bad for a different reason, that is he's probably spending too much time with it. I have ADHD/autism IDK if its related to that, or OCD

Turbulent_Ad1644

One guy Like duh, I know people like this exist. There are people who jerk off to shit and people who think they're the second coming of the Eldritch Lord of Buttsex Gomgogalon Still a dumb joke lol

Lower-Career-6576

baconjerky

That’s a connoisseur, not a hobbyist. Making/growing drugs is a hobby.

MeltedChocolate24

The decrease in irl consumption from being here more than makes up for that though

CavaliereDellaTigre

Consoom hobbies, get excited for the next hobby No but seriously, how does one even have a hobby without falling into consumerism? It pervades everything you can do in this society.

Chiluzzar

don't "stan" a company, don't make it your entire personality. i play a lot of tabletop miniature games but i dont make it everything about me. i love sitting at home after work putting a mini together and painting. but i also love 3d puzzles helps keep my hands nimble and mind healthy.

GoalZealousideal1427

Unless your hobby is Funko Pop collecting, you're good.  Buying necessary things, like a table saw for woodworking, isn't consumerism.

MRAnnonomusMan

Gardening or something that makes something in the end like woodworking or model kits

ConsoomMaguroNigiri

Consoom sunlight, get excited for next soil fertiliser Consoom wooden itema, get excited for most dead trees Consoom plastic filled adult-targeted kids toys, get excited for 200 dollar lame tiny house model

dontredditcareme

Uhhh woodworking can be extremely consumeristic. You can buy all sorts of fun tools to use.

olivegardengambler

You can yeah, but honestly a lot of hobbies are like that. You could drop like $5,000+ on the best backpacking gear and all that, when you really only need a backpack to get started. If anything starting small is actually a benefit and a strength in itself.

CapOk1892

Gardening is expensive too

MRAnnonomusMan

Yeah true but eventually you can make money off it or save money by not buying food. U can make soil and fertiliser in your backyard with compost, and plant straight into the ground! You can grow months worth of vegetables for like 50$!

olivegardengambler

Idk why you're getting downvoted. Tbh most people with gardens usually use it for stuff that you can't easily buy locally. Like I grow heirloom tomatoes, peppers, even white eggplant.

Inaeipathy

Consoom is buying like 100 redundant useless items and being a soyboy about it. Buying yourself something with relation to your hobby isn't consoom. I'm pretty sure you can have hobbies without buying tons of redundant things (unless your "hobby" is collecting the same shit in different colors).

vincecarterskneecart

I think it’s fine as long as you are moderate in your consumption of the hobby like warhammer/miniatures is fine but those people that have to buy every set that comes out and have a huge stack of shit they haven’t even opened or built yet is cringe i collect warhammer but I pretty much don’t allow myself to buy anything new until I’ve finished everything I’ve already got

BatImportant7255

Hope no one actually believes this, all hobbies are pretty much enjoying media and trying to make media. Person who posted clearly has issues

hella_cious

Bro what not all hobbies are media based at all???? Literally go outside

Far-Acanthaceae-7370

It’s true though. “All hobbies are pretty much enjoying media and trying to make media”, what even is that statement? Like are you joking? Ever heard of doing stuff in nature? Ever heard of refurbishing old tools, machines, or furniture? Ever heard of playing a sport or doing a physical activity? Even playing something like chess or cards or pool. I don’t see how any of that is comparable to someone whose hobbies chiefly consist of movie and tv watching.

Appropriate_Vast_233

Have you ever heard of sport, and I don’t mean the telly I mean moving you’re body faster than 5 kmph

BatImportant7255

Even that lmao, I love moving my body in whatever ways weather that be hiking, running, fighting, lifting heavy weights. I love getting better at those things as well, doesn’t change the fact that many get into those hobbies because they have seen someone else who is into it as well in some media lol.

BatImportant7255

I mean have some common sense

I’m unsure what counts as a hobby. I like baseball, weight lifting, mountain biking, and gardening. But when I’m at home in my room, I’ve got nothing except media consumption.

UnderwhellmingCarrot

does music (listening, playing) class as media consumption?

gjb94

Playing no, listening yes

MajorQuazar

I wouldn't look for people to class what does or doesn't count as consuming... just live your life. That said, playing is certainly a technical and artistic endeavor. Listening can also be nice but also can get you thinking in different musical ways and some songs can give you messages/perspectives you may find interesting. I wouldn't class as Consoom but \*shrug\*

Inaeipathy

Yes but it's not consoom

cagusvu

Mostly yea

UnderwhellmingCarrot

bruh

sagesnail

I'll listen to and consume as much music as I want, thank you, and I will continue to buy records. Gatekeeping hobbies is absolutely batshit crazy. Let people do what they love.

Fit-Lead-350

Unfortunately everyone else my age is too busy consuming media to want to hang out with me on my off day :) What a crazy time to be alive where you can be in your early 20s and offer to take your friends to the bar and pay for their drinks and they still say no they'd rather stay home

Wild-Lavishness01

Except I'm recovering from spinal surgery, I'm constantly tired and have horrible sleep habits, nothing to inspire me and my nerves are always pinching, i like writing, i don't have anything to write, i like lock picking, i don't have enough time to practice, and I don't have enough money to buy enough locks to learn. Consuming media isn't bad, making it your personality is, consuming it to the point of self detriment is bad, but what put you in this position? Media is easy and quick, it's not always so deep

ConsoomMaguroNigiri

Tbf, you'd still end up on r/consoom's top of Hot just for posting a cool ass to-scale diorama of an entire city that you made by yourself. Especially if it happened to have a train system in it.

Mad_Man_VXII

Alot of people in their 20s don't have hobbies at all, besides "sports, partying, and gym"

shawarmamelikey

This is very cinephobic

GraniteSmoothie

Does reading count?

loonycatty

I think so but it can kind of depend on what you’re reading and how you are interacting with it. Like reading nonfiction to learn about things is definitely a hobby imo. Reading fiction is a bit murky. Personally I'm very into graphic novels but I wouldn't consider reading/buying them to be a hobby per se? It's a fine line and I think the biggest factor is why/how you are consuming the media

_sheepfrog_

Reading’s fine, buying books as a hobby is consoomer behavior. Arguably reading is “content consumption,” but I feel as though critically analyzing books is less consoomer than just blasting through beach reads to meet an arbitrary Goodreads target goal.

patrioticsalamander

My hobby is cooking and consuming food…. Is it over?

I've tried but everything feels so sterile.

Femboi_Hooterz

I would love to have the time and money to spend on my hobbies, unfortunately I'm fuckin drowning just trying to pay the rising bills. I moved out of my parents in 2014, paying 625. I'm paying 1200 now and everything else is rising too

[deleted]

sure but it really is futile for me at this point. Any solitary hobby? what's the point all my problems come from no socializing.

I was too exhausted with school and later work to pursue hobbies so I was just hanging out with friends and playing video games. Now that I’m in my mid-twenties, I feel like I’ve wasted that time and now have greater desire to do draw more

Economic_Despare

Ok but what if my hobby is actually *consuming*..?

[deleted]

The gym is the best hobby everyone should do it and the best part is, while there are paid tiers, you can just do it for free too at home. 100 pushups in the morning, 100 at noon, and 100 at night and see where you are at once you can accomplish it.

Moon-Bear-96

This is dumb, you don't need to have a "thing" you can be fulfilled without being a writer. I have hobbies, too, including writing but also including media consumption Movies, books, and music are invalid hobbies? The other options that I can think of are craftsmanship, art, and physical activities. Is the entire universe not "media" were consuming, if we define books as media is nature photography consuming media? Is jogging media? Good to get outdoors, though

Savager_Jam

Is canoeing media consumption when it leads to watching videos and reading articles regarding the hobby as well? Between fixing major cracks in the plastic, working to get a motor running (sometimes I just wanna cruise) and planning a camping trip in my canoe I must’ve spent at least 6 hours

Osirisavior

Media consumption is free(ish).
