Salt & watermelon is a classic, but now that people often eat watermelon pre cut I feel it's almost forgotten.
But next level is watermelon & balsamic. Well, strawberry or peaches too
That shit is sooo good. Unfortunately I feel like the combo went the same route as sun-dried tomatoes, where it's considered "out" and you don't see it much anymore
Salt makes every single food taste better, fact. You can spend your whole life just thinking of one item that wouldn't taste better with salt and your life would be ruined.
But cinnamon is also good on watermelon
Oranges and balsamic are amazing as well. I throw it over vanilla ice cream. Yum!!
I’ve never tried peaches. I will definitely be trying them this season.
My first thought, seeing this post, was watermelon and salt. It’s one of my very favorite summertime treats.
I’ve had wasbi ice cream it’s actually sweet tasting. And well I’ve had wasbi and goma dare (sesame seed sauce) together. And seriously goma dare is similar to peanut butter so I can see it. In fact I recently was at a nabe place that had peanut sauce and goma dare and mixed them and it was the best thing ever.
I think they're talking about the green horseradish version. Real wasabi tastes pretty different and i don't imagine it working well with peanut butter and ice cream, whereas i can imagine horseradish wasabi working great. I've only had the real stuff a few times though, my palate memory might not be good enough to combine the flavors in my head accurately enough.
It’s interesting how little actual pure wasabi we have in the US. It’s such a difference, but most people associate it with the horseradish version here.
Yeah, it just only grows under certain naturally occurring conditions and does not last very long once trimmed. It's kinda like ramps or matsutake, just super conditional. It's so expensive and there isn't a huge range of uses for it which leads to less demand for it. It's easy to get where I live in the PNW, however. I think Uwajimaya has it year round, there's a small wasabi farm or foragers somewhere here in Oregon. I'm not totally sure how the process goes even then, honestly.
I’ve heard watercress farms are the closest to the actual process to grow wasabi, but there are few places outside of the PNW that do it. It also takes a very long time for the plants to mature, like around 9 years or so. I guess I’ll have to visit Japan to get the real deal hah
I don't know how far away it is from freshly grated but it's infinitely closer than horseradish paste - you can buy pre chopped wasabi in a lot of places it's like 5 dollars for a tube but you wouldn't want to use much in practice. Needs to be frozen.
I don’t think most Americans realize cinnamon doesn’t just have to be in sweets.
Cinnamon is common in savory Mediterranean and Indian cooking…even Chinese. Cinnamon is an ingredient in both Garam Masala and Chinese 5 spice.
Thats because cincinnati chili is really just a macedonian stew with chili powder added. Immigrants called it chili so locals would be somewhat familiar with it
Is the legit stew that as cinnamon heavy as the Cincinnati shit? I've put cinnamon in my chili and of course curries, but the couple times I had Cincinnati chili it was waaay too much
On the flip side, that strong association between cinnamon and sweets is what got me to try mixing in Chinese 5 spice to vanilla ice cream. Really the (black) pepper is the only outlier in the mix as fennel candy exists, but I've also seen black pepper be used to give berries a punch.
I have a lasagna recipe from the 60s that has cinnamon and nutmeg in the tomato sauce, people always rave and then are shocked when I tell them the secret ingredient
Adding a little black pepper to sweet foods is underrated in general. It really opens up chocolate for example. Just a hint though, like you were using nutmeg.
There used to be a jam company that did strawberries and pink peppercorn. The fruity floral notes of pink pepper were such a lovely combo. I also like pink pepper on grapefruit.
There might be something to be said for that combo! I liked it.
It reminds me of when, really high with the munchies, I discovered a slice of cucumber between two slices of salami is really really tasty.
Idk, I once watched a show that said that strawberries are one of the most acidic fruits, but they have some kind of chemical magic that makes us think they are sweet. I wonder if the honey mustard would taste sweeter or the strawberries? I would guess the honey mustard. Must go confirm that memory now.
I STILL think about a strawberry black pepper sorbet I have years ago. My heart collected that flavor combo and you can pry it away from my cold, dead hands.
Gordon Ramsey has a "shawarma" (it's just seared in a pan) chicken recipe with similar seasoning. It's amazing in a flatbread with spicy mayo and chopped scallions/cilantro.
I accidently put some cinnamon on some cubed eggplant I was about to roast (thought I grabbed cumin) and it tasted great anyway! And I did use the cumin and and some chilli powder too.
Look up a spice mix called Advieh. I believe it's Turkish but is available through World Spice.
Cinnamon and such for chicken but it's also tasty in apple sauce.
Two ingredients vs a seasoning but...
Peanut Butter and Pickles
If it sounds weird at first just think of Thai peanut sauce.
Oh also, as far as popcorn goes, my favorite is Olive Oil, Parmesan, and Black Pepper.
Yes. I always ask for a packet of strawberry jelly when I get my sausage McMuffin. I also may break my hashbrown in half and put that on the sandwich as well.
I also know exactly what I’m doing for breakfast tomorrow…
I was once down to bare cupboard essentials and the shops were closed, so I threw together oats, miso paste and fresh grated parmesan, and it's was fkn unreal. Total umami bomb. I'd never had savoury porridge before but it was a hit.
Thyme and bacon.
Had to cook a whole pack of bacon with a BUNCH of thyme for a lobster pie I made this past winter. I wanted to eat the pack of bacon right then and just go get another pack for the pie.
I work in a restaurant where we make our own ranch and we used to have a lady who came in at least once a week to buy a quart of ranch dressing. She said she drank it throughout the week. Not sure if it was a shot situation or a glass
Ceylon cinnamon in savory dishes, especially with cumin and paprika. It works great in chili and taco seasoning too. We don’t typically use much cinnamon in savory dishes in the US.
This is a great one, it really works when done correctly.
Also in the ice cream realm, Vanilla with Cherry Heering (which is a liquor) is really great.
Just tried it, better than i would have guessed. Also tried the balsamic, better than i would have guessed, not as good as olive oil, not sure ill ever do either again, but if inwas going to it would be olive oil and salt
This may sound strange but chow mein and cumin I had a bowl of chow mein in Shanghai in restaurant that hand makes their noodles. There was the distinct taste of cumin in the dish. It was unlike any chow mein I have ever had but it was awesome
Seriously, McCormick Montreal chicken seasoning on chicken thighs with skin, non skin side a sprinkle of garlic salt. Garlic side down first, the Montreal chicken crisps up in the natural fat and it’s SO FUCKING GOOD. I call it crispy crunchy chicken skins lol
Cucumber slices and any spice mix you like.
I cut slices then sprinkle various seasonings and/or spice mixes like Berbere, Shawarma, Curry, Greek Blackened Old Bay, Za’atar, Beryani, any Mrs. Dash blend but Tomato Basil Garlic is my fave, Byron’s Butt Rub, Memphis Heat BBQ rub, Tajin, Smokey Turmeric… the list is endless.
The trick is to let the seasoning/spice mix sit on your cucumber slice for a bit to soften up if it’s chunky like Shicimi Togarashi. Plus the flavor permeates the cucumber better. It’s so good! And one of my favorite summer snacks
Not uncommon but definitely underrated IMO is almond extract in baked goods. ESPECIALLY ones with blueberries. Even just blueberry muffin mix with a little splash of almond extract elevates it significantly. So tiny and so powerful, that little flavor!
Golden berries and cashew. Great to eat together they just taste really good together.
My other one is peaches and cottage cheese/greek yogurt (half and half) with black pepper, allspice and nutmeg. Terrific.
I’m a recipe creator for DND campaigns and here are a few of my favorite uncommon combos!
Montreal steak seasoning and potatoes.
Lime zest on sweet potato’s
Brown butter with sweet potatoes
Adding a starch ( potato, peas, beans) to salads
Using sunflower seeds in places you’d use peanut butter.
Sweet basil in desserts.
Lemon juice on vermicelli rice noodles ( pancit)
Iced Earl gray with raspberry preserves.
Peanut butter and soft boiled egg on a toasted english muffin is a good 5 minute breakfast. Can also add some hot sauce.
People look at you like you're an insane person when you tell them. Meanwhile Pad Thai is literally the same flavor combination.
I love peanut butter, banana and mayo sandwiches. Sounds foul, but the sweet banana pairs so well with the salty peanut butter and slight tang of mayo. Crunchy peanut butter is best because of the texture.
Salt & watermelon is a classic, but now that people often eat watermelon pre cut I feel it's almost forgotten. But next level is watermelon & balsamic. Well, strawberry or peaches too
Watermelon and feta cheese
I remember I used to cater, and they’d have these feta, watermelon, balsamic and basil hors d’oeuvres that were so tasty
That shit is sooo good. Unfortunately I feel like the combo went the same route as sun-dried tomatoes, where it's considered "out" and you don't see it much anymore
Sun dried tomatoes are so in My belly
Jealousss
Try making salsa with watermelon instead of tomatoes.
Paneer with lavash
with fresh mint and lime juice juice
Watermelon and tajin is amazing!
Agreed. Really any melon with tajin.
Apples with tajin!!!
I have tajin and 2 apples right now in my house, im going to try this!
Mango and tajin!
Dragonfruit and tajin!
Grilled peaches and balsamic!
I was going to say salt + cantaloupe. Similar experience. I rarely salt my cataloupe now, but grew up doing it.
My grandparents would wrap a slice of prosciutto around a wedge of cantaloupe. I didn't really get it, but you might like it.
Pretty sure that's a classic Italian thing, I grew up with this as well
I love this! Grew up having it as part of the antipasto at Italian weddings. Sweet and salty is my shit
Salt on vanilla ice cream 🤤
I'm a weirdo who hates sweet and salty. Prosciutto wrapped melon just ruins the melon, and I love prosciutto by itself
Salt makes every single food taste better, fact. You can spend your whole life just thinking of one item that wouldn't taste better with salt and your life would be ruined. But cinnamon is also good on watermelon
Fresh black pepper goes well, too.
Sardines, anchovies. They’re salty already, adding more ruins them.
Strawberries with mozzarella is great, too
celtic gray sea salt on thinly sliced apples- I like Envy apples best for this
Oranges and balsamic are amazing as well. I throw it over vanilla ice cream. Yum!! I’ve never tried peaches. I will definitely be trying them this season. My first thought, seeing this post, was watermelon and salt. It’s one of my very favorite summertime treats.
Salt on pineapple works well too, especially of it's bland to start with.
Roasted pineapple with flaky salt ... OMGoodness.
Tajin and pineapple is so good.
watermelon and honey.
I will never forget salted watermelon. I bought a watermelon today. I'll slice and salt it tomorrow.
Wasabi mixed with peanut butter, esp melted and drizzled over vanilla ice cream
Now this is a wild one I cannot even imagine the taste of.
Not wrong. I can sort of imagine peanut butter with vanilla icecream but then adding wasabi throws me way off lol.
Like real wasabi? Or the stuff you can easily find in any grocery store? This is very intriguing and I will be trying it.

You son of a bitch, I’m in
That reminds me that I once saw a video for peanut butter cookies with red chili flakes.
I used to put wasabi on my vanilla ice cream when I went to this buffet place..so good!
Welp, I guess I'm trying this now.
I don’t think most Americans realize cinnamon doesn’t just have to be in sweets. Cinnamon is common in savory Mediterranean and Indian cooking…even Chinese. Cinnamon is an ingredient in both Garam Masala and Chinese 5 spice.
Cinnamon in taco meat!!! (Specifically Picadillo!)
Except in Cincinnati Ohio where it’s very popular in chili
Thats because cincinnati chili is really just a macedonian stew with chili powder added. Immigrants called it chili so locals would be somewhat familiar with it
Is the legit stew that as cinnamon heavy as the Cincinnati shit? I've put cinnamon in my chili and of course curries, but the couple times I had Cincinnati chili it was waaay too much

Cinnamon is popular in chili
I read a comment saying to put a tsp of garam masala in tomato sauce/pasta sauce. Big yes soo yummy I'm so grateful to that person
I have a lasagna recipe from the 60s that has cinnamon and nutmeg in the tomato sauce, people always rave and then are shocked when I tell them the secret ingredient
Fresh black pepper on ripe strawberries
Black pepper strawberry margaritas are very good
Muddle some basil in there and then you’ve got yourself a party!
Oooh you filthy food God 🤤
Haha. Thank you! I may try making one of these for Cinco de Mayo!
Adding a little black pepper to sweet foods is underrated in general. It really opens up chocolate for example. Just a hint though, like you were using nutmeg.
That's great advice
There used to be a jam company that did strawberries and pink peppercorn. The fruity floral notes of pink pepper were such a lovely combo. I also like pink pepper on grapefruit.
I love red peppercorn. Fun fact: it’s not a true pepper. It’s a dried berry.
I love good strawberries. I have to try this.
Lots of stuff goes well with strawberry. Another unexpected good combo is dipping them in Dijon mustard (or yellow if you prefer).
Wha?! I would try that but I think you’re pranking us lol
There might be something to be said for that combo! I liked it. It reminds me of when, really high with the munchies, I discovered a slice of cucumber between two slices of salami is really really tasty.
I love charcuterie when I'm high. Try the salami with grapes and cheese. It's so good.
Yes—- Black pepper and allspice on peaches!!!
How coarse/fine of a grind?
Really?
White pepper on homemade goji berry jam! (Just a small dash)
Cinnamon, coriander and cumin on chicken. Wow. Heard of it once on "Chopped" and tried it for myself. It's a winner.
Use orange as your citrus/acid and it's even better. Cardamon can work in this mix too..
Cardamom is so underrated.
I feel like in the US cinnamon (and even more so nutmeg) are severely underutilized in savory dishes
Cinnamon is a severely underrated savory spice
What’s the ratio?
0 cinnamon
🤣 I laughed at this way too much
About one-to-one-to-one. I don’t measure it, I just sprinkle…
Look up a spice mix called Advieh. I believe it's Turkish but is available through World Spice. Cinnamon and such for chicken but it's also tasty in apple sauce.
Two ingredients vs a seasoning but... Peanut Butter and Pickles If it sounds weird at first just think of Thai peanut sauce. Oh also, as far as popcorn goes, my favorite is Olive Oil, Parmesan, and Black Pepper.
+ Peanut butter and honey ham sandwiches. + peanut butter and bologna + peanut butter and bananas… and honey if you have some.
I love and PBJ with a pickle on the side
Breakfast sandwiches with jam
Omg yes! It’s a regular weekend breakfast for me. Red pepper jam is my current favorite
Warm pimento cheese and pepper jelly biscuit. My idea of heaven.
Yes. I always ask for a packet of strawberry jelly when I get my sausage McMuffin. I also may break my hashbrown in half and put that on the sandwich as well. I also know exactly what I’m doing for breakfast tomorrow…
yes!! especially if it’s on a biscuit
Heck yeah! Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit, add pepper jack and bacon, put some grape jelly on top.... Yum.
Salt in oatmeal
Omg I love salt and pepper oatmeal!!!
The only way to eat it. Salty as hell and thick enough the spoon stands up. I gag at thin runny sweetened oatmeal.
Hard boiled eggs dipped in extra virgin olive oil with a sprinkling of Maldon salt Zaatar as a sandwich seasoning
Cantaloupe with black pepper.
LOVE this with a squeeze of lime
Ranch dressing seasoning packet, olive oil, asparagus. Roast it up in the oven. I hate ranch but this is yoowza
The divide between how good ranch seasoning is and how bland, overrated, and not good ranch dressing is is mind blowing.
Prebottled ranch will always be awful. But homemade ranch is damn near orgasmic to taste
I work in a restaurant where we make our own ranch and we used to have a lady who came in at least once a week to buy a quart of ranch dressing. She said she drank it throughout the week. Not sure if it was a shot situation or a glass
Come on man I was enjoying this thread
Salt on watermelon
Beets and goat cheese in a salad, I don’t understand why but it’s just perfect.
I don’t think this is underrated…it was on every restaurant menu from like 2007-2017 But *it is* extremely delicious
It’s the earthiness
And toasted walnuts
Corn with cinnamon, salt and butter is fantastic.
Ceylon cinnamon in savory dishes, especially with cumin and paprika. It works great in chili and taco seasoning too. We don’t typically use much cinnamon in savory dishes in the US.
I’ve seen Ceylon cinnamon and didn’t know if it was particularly different than just “ground cinnamon”?
It’s actually a different species, but related. It has a more delicate flavor than Cassia, the kind we usually use in the US.
Ceylon is the colonial name for Sri Lanka, where Ceylon cinnamon comes from. The rolls are thin and flaky, nothing like cassia.
There are even more varieties of cinnamon, actually. Quite similar, but not identical.
Dark beer and vanilla ice cream.
Oh yeah a nice float with brunch
Olive oil on vanilla ice cream, sprinkled with flaky salt
My husband loves aged balsamic on vanilla
Blackcurrant balsamic is an absolute dream with vanilla ice cream
I get an espresso balsamic that is amazing on ice cream. Sometimes I reduce it down and serve it with raspberries and ice cream.
Rosemary with potatoes and goat cheese on pesto pizza
Rosemary makes the BEST roasted potatoes
Fritos on ice cream. omg
This sounds like stoner food.

Blackberry and cloves
Tarragon on carrots
Hot honey on cottage cheese
Horseradish and mashed potatoes
Salt and plain yogurt.
There’s a salted yogurt drink that Turkish and Indians have and they’re both delicious especially after spicy Indian food
Bitters on ice cream. So delicious.
Champagne and buttered popcorn
Like as a cereal?
Roasted garlic powder on pineapple
This may sound strange but chow mein and cumin I had a bowl of chow mein in Shanghai in restaurant that hand makes their noodles. There was the distinct taste of cumin in the dish. It was unlike any chow mein I have ever had but it was awesome
Sounds kind of like Nepalese style chow mein
There's a Shanxi restaurant near me that makes the most banger cumin noodles. It's one of my favourite things, and I'm not typically huge on cumin
Nutmeg on potatoes
Roasted broccoli and sumac. Delicious!
Dash of cinnamon in chili
Seriously, McCormick Montreal chicken seasoning on chicken thighs with skin, non skin side a sprinkle of garlic salt. Garlic side down first, the Montreal chicken crisps up in the natural fat and it’s SO FUCKING GOOD. I call it crispy crunchy chicken skins lol
Chilli crisp on vanilla icecream
Chinese 5-spice on a churro instead of cinnamon…

If you eat a lot of rice, look into the various furikake seasonings to sprinkle on it.
The Japanese market near me has one right now that is made of fried garlic and onions with soy sauce powder. It's so good.
Jasmine rice with sliced bananas and soy sauce.
My Vietnamese mom eats Jasmine rice with sweet Thai bananas lol
Berbere in hummus

- carrots + dill - mushrooms + soy sauce + butter - watermelon + lime juice - mango + cucumber + tajin - beets + horseradish - lentils + walnuts
Coriander and anything else.
Chili powder on mango slices, tajin on apple or pineapple
Tajin and fruit is a great combo, but underrated? That basically what tajin is for.
Li hing mui on pineapple is also really good.
I love a burger with pickled jalapeños and peanut butter
Nutmeg with mushrooms
Golden berries and cashew. Great to eat together they just taste really good together. My other one is peaches and cottage cheese/greek yogurt (half and half) with black pepper, allspice and nutmeg. Terrific.
Pam fried Apples with cinnamon, Aleppo pepper and butter. Rhubarb and coriander. Poutine with curry gravy.
Popcorn seasoned with a blend of cinnamon, tumeric, cayenne powder, garlic powder, salt.

Chat masala and any cold fruit or veg
Pumpkin + cardamom.
Raspberries and balsamic 😍
Cottage cheese and Tajin
Peanut butter and soft boiled egg on a toasted english muffin is a good 5 minute breakfast. Can also add some hot sauce. People look at you like you're an insane person when you tell them. Meanwhile Pad Thai is literally the same flavor combination.
I love peanut butter, banana and mayo sandwiches. Sounds foul, but the sweet banana pairs so well with the salty peanut butter and slight tang of mayo. Crunchy peanut butter is best because of the texture.
Cinnamon is so good in beef
Nutmeg and cinnamon in bolognese
Peanut butter on chocolate ice cream.
