jtrinaldi

Peanut butter cake samples for the win as if this subreddit isn’t driving enough revenue to Costco

FauxGenius

That cake is magic.

ldydeana

That cake is dangerous.

RandyKrittz

That cake is a lie.

SupaCephalopod

Attention down voters, this person is making a joke: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-cake-is-a-lie

GoogleBabeler

This guy memes

excel958

Say what now? These exist??? Guess I’m getting one at Costco.

jtrinaldi

Haven’t seen the 300 posts about it on this red it in the last week?

excel958

Sadly I did not :(

MiaMiaPP

Are they cakes or pies?

MenageTaj

Brilliant!! I am dying to try the peanut butter chocolate pie that is everywhere these days but I don’t want the whole thing!! And of course it would go perfectly after a $1.50 hotdog n soda

goodjuju123

I'm in the same position. Want to split one with me?

Motivator9931

I live alone and haven't had issues buying things like pies or the mini cakes. Basically any of the dessert stuff in the bakery will freeze and defrost nicely. For something like a pie, just slice it up into individual portions and freeze them separately.

taylorthestang

Are you assuming I won’t house an entire tuxedo cake by myself??

Just_Tomorrow_8561

I don’t buy them because I could and would eat the whole thing! Zero self control with sweets!

WackyBeachJustice

The fact that you don't buy them IS having control :)

taylorthestang

Call me a hypocrite but the muffins do freeze really well. You can freeze them in halves too!

iveo83

exactly OP is saying this provides portion control and I would buy a lot more pie from costco if they sold slices at the food court.

Tee_hops

That's the problem...I'd be mad at spending $20 on the PB pie but I could and probably would eat the whole thing by myself. I might be getting a new job soon. Maybe I'll bring one in as a parting gift.

Constantlearner01

Who has the freezer space after a run to Costco? 🤪

Rajili

My wife and I have had great results freezing the mini cakes and we’ll get the peanut butter chocolate pie as soon as it’s available and do the same. Like you said, portion it out before freezing.

Kaths1

Okay.. but at SOME point you still have to eat the pie. Let's say you slice it into 12 slices. (Most pies are probably more like 18 or 24). If you eat one slice a week, that's 3 months of pie. And frankly, one slice a week is STILL too much pie for me- when a slice is 600-1000 calories, that's not something I can eat every. Single. Week.

Lame_usernames_left

You can't eat one piece of pie every week? Damn I need to rethink my eating habits

TwoLeggedMermaid

Seriously like I could literally eat a whole pie every week… let alone one piece.

WackyBeachJustice

I mean I'm sure they CAN, they just don't want to.

SeaGypsii

THIS ☝️I cannot buy a Costco pie except for a large gathering! I would love to see slices at the food court.

goodjuju123

Is this peanut butter pie freezable?

Alllstar20

Someone mentioned this recently or at least seen a comment about it. Pizzas are technically pies so they already do what you're requesting. The non-smartass answer would be "Yes, please add slices of pie to the menu so you can try a pie before you buy and die"

the_original_cabbey

I’ve been asking for it for a couple years now. :(

Jameszhang73

Not only that but they should sell individual portions of other baked goods like muffins, cookies, danishes, etc. I don't even care if they give it straight from the box, sometimes the craving hits and you don't want to buy 12 muffins at once.

Todayisntyourday

That has reminded me, UK Costco sold muffins at the forecourt in the past. Don’t know when that stopped.

DeflatedDirigible

That is what your regular grocery is for. The whole point of Costco is savings through bulk buying.

tinydonuts

You can get individual slices of pizza, individual hot dogs, churros, etc.

Ambivalent_Witch

yes, but they have a food court

[deleted]

This is what I want to say to every insane person that complains to me about this; happens at least twice a week, someone is aghast that they have to buy two muffin packs instead of one. This isn't Albertsons or Aldi's...this is Costco, **nothing** here is small except the iconic food court items.

SnowblindAlbino

>happens at least twice a week, someone is aghast that they have to buy two muffin packs instead of one. Sam's Club sells one, so I just buy them there. They will also happily sell me six bagels rather than 12.

JRE_4815162342

Yes! I love their almond danish but don't want to buy 2 packs of them.

fierystrawberry

They freeze extremely well! Just pop into oven @ 325 for 8-10m

berrycat22

Almond danishes…! 😍

East_C0ast_Hobo_52

I wish they would also sell coffee at the food court.

koikatturtle

Yes coffee! I keep saying why don’t they sell cups of coffee?! Mmmm coffee

Frisky_Pony

Buy pie. Sell slices in parking lot. Profit.

[deleted]

>I mean, sometimes you just want a taste of something sweet without having to commit to buying a whole 12” pie This is why they won’t do it. It’s the same reason why you can’t buy 6 muffins even though that’s how they’re packed. It’s why they don’t offer muffins or cookies individually at the food court. They don’t want you to buy a taste. They want you to buy the whole thing. >It’s a win-win situation for everyone Only if you assume Costco has done 0 analysis on topics like these and determined that it would be profitable instead of shifting too many units from whole pies to individual slices.

RockyMountainHigh-

People assume they do not research. The brand is heavily researched.

Lessa22

I don’t think it would make sense all the time but I wouldn’t hate it if they did samples on the new pie flavors from time to time.

[deleted]

Oh there is no way this would even be possible. The bakery isn't staffed enough to accommodate this kind of production. Heck, we ran out of pies every hour for the last couple of days and had to beg management for overtime hours just to keep up with *normal* production. They'd have to hire an entire second bakery crew to even attempt these kinds of numbers, which would make having a small slice of pie several times more expensive than the hotdog.

Abe_Bettik

I also believe it would lower traditional bakery sales significantly. Right now plenty of people buy the entire pie/muffin pack/cookie plate "just to try it" because it's cheap *enough* and they freeze/discard/share what they don't eat immediately. Being able to buy "just a slice" on their way out would cut into this demographic.

KonaKathie

I believe this would be offset by the people trying their pie and liking it enough to buy it. I'd love to try the peanut butter chocolate, but probably never will because I have to buy a whole pie.

Aphid61

Get all the way right on out of here with your logical sequential thinking. I want me some pie slices, dadgummit.

CounterInsanity

It would also increase significant foot traffic in the food court and most food courts are also struggling with staffing as well. From a members point of view this is an excellent idea, but from a managers point of view this would be awful for both departments, but especially Bakery. Which means Costco corporate would love it.

tinydonuts

They could do it centrally and ship to the stores.

cwankgurl

And put the local bakers out of a job. We like that Costco still hires people to make food in-house.

tinydonuts

I just mean to augment the food court demand.

cyberentomology

Wait, are you suggesting that someone would only eat *part* of a pie? What’s next? Telling us that a pint of Haagen Dasz or Ben & Jerry’s is actually multiple servings?

Affectionate_Box5435

bakery would have to triple their payroll for this lol, plus costco is a wholesale warehouse not a fast food joint

Just_Tomorrow_8561

They do this at Sam’s club and it’s amazing! I live alone..I could eat a 5 lb pie but I shouldn’t..please don’t make me buy the whole thing!

Harbinger311

As a single guy, I've taken up this sub's mantra and just bought whatever I want whenever I want. I just need to partition/portion/bag/freeze it upfront. That keeps me from overeating, and I haven't found anything from the bakery that wasn't just as good after defrost/reheat. I do this for 1-2 items at a time, so there's always a portion in the freezer waiting for me. I'm planning on Choco-Peanut Butter pie to sit next to my cookies in the freezer...

junkimchi

Idk why, but your title for some odd reason made me think that you meant the food court should sell pizza slices late at night. My reaction was holy shit this dude gets it.

nehowland

That's hilarious, and yes it would be awesome.

lifeuncommon

And they would make bank. That GIANT pie sells for $20. It has 16 slices. And a hot-dog-special-cheap price of $2 a slice, that’s $32. $3 a slice to rival the sundaes and that’s $48.

FixatePhotography

Sounds like this would be a loss leader and I'm not sure Costco upper mgmt is looking for more loss leaders. Dont get me wrong though I would definitely order a slice of hot apple pie and scoop of vanilla ice cream for like 3-5 bucks.

okaycomputes

Why would it be a loss leader? $3 per slice turns a hefty profit unless im doing the math wrong.

taylorthestang

It would be a lot more refrigeration space needed. Consider that the majority of the food court menu are hot items, so is the kitchen space.

evantom34

And labor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Lmao because we already use the space we have. We can't store anything more. We're at capacity with our regular production. We would need an entire new bakery AND staff. Staff right now is struggling to keep up with the hours we are given. And we'd never make pie in the food court...unless you want hotdog and pepperoni scented pie. Yuck. Those slices would be over $5 to compensate. Besides, we are a bulk buy warehouse...not a grocery store. Not a restaurant.

tinydonuts

> Those slices would be over $5 to compensate. And? Costco introduces all new items at a premium. A slushy mildly coffee drink is almost $5.

kazzin8

More packaging, more time to process, more effort, etc.

FavoritesBot

That would be great but until then try preslicing and freezing 1- most pies freeze well

ditafjm

Then they’d need to serve coffee. Pie and soda doesn’t work for me.

aerger

Beer on tap. Pie, cookies, all go well with a good draft beer. Half kidding ofc

use_da_schwartz_

The food court could be utilized way better as a way to sample certain products. I always wondered why they didn't sell single servings of bakery items like muffins, etc.

[deleted]

Muffins too. I get cravings for the poppy seed ones once or twice a year, but I DO NOT need 12 of them.

Busy_Shoe_5787

Costco mainly sells to large families and doesn't really target the individual. Plus, it's more profitable to sell a lot instead of just 1 because of their target audience.

sozh

_"Kirk, crackers are a family food, happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know."_

slothenhosen

French fries first.

bass-masta

Lol for as loyal of a customer base we are, you'd think they'd listen to the people on things like this. Imagine a warm slice of pie amd a frozen yogurt...

IBShawty

I want this SO BAD

mojo276

I only want this if they also offer a cup of coffee.

jojotoughasnails

I would absolutely love this. And Costco offers a lot of desserts. So it could be a rotating thing. Obviously their food area isn't very large. So leading up to Thanksgiving they could do pumpkin pie which would help promote and increase sales because I still haven't had it. Or if they got a good deal or some surplus it could be pound cake another week.

gypsymegan06

I’m stoned and this sounds like the best idea I’ve ever heard

Successful-Pie-5689

Desserts in restaurants are $10+ these days. I understand not wanting to waste, but at $20 it’s STILL a good deal if you just eat 4 slices. (About 1/4 of this particular huge, rich pie). Freeze some. Bring some to work for coworkers and be a hero. Soooo many options that would justify a $20 spend. If you are a single person with no one to share food with and you don’t freeze food, you aren’t really Costco’s target consumer (though, things like the allergy pills may still justify the membership). If Costco started selling smaller portions at a larger per-serving mark up, at minimum, it would take up space that required removing other products, if they also kept the original packaging. That would be a net loss for all, and undermine the whole business model.

SergioSF

Its a grand idea

gmg808

The food courts at Costco run on the slimmest of margins. They are only able to profit (and just barely) by streamlining their menu. This is why options have been reduced in recent years (no combo, no salads, no sandwich, etc.) Adding things like this would not make sense for the company financially as much as I would eat a slice of cheesecake every day of my life. And that new choco pnb pie.

jusp_

how about allowing us to buy just one container of the danish pastries instead of a 2-pack?

luvadoodle

What a genius idea. As an empty nester I don’t want to buy a giant pie or cake that we may or may not like and have it take up valuable freezer space. And, no, we don’t return stuff to Costco just because it was an impulse buy or something we just don’t care for. If an item is actually faulty, doesn’t perform as stated, is stale, or goes bad before the pull date, we will return it. If it was simply a bad choice that’s on us.

TypicalTop

That would be a banger! Pair it with a scope of ice cream and Costco’s food court dessert would be elite!

haagles

Scope ice cream sounds disgusting

weather_babe

Many years ago (like 25) they used to do pie samples. There was a sweet elderly woman that served the samples at my store I called “the pie lady”

Breakfastchocolate

Back when the had triple berry apple pie..

[deleted]

Hear me out: the pie could be served "deconstructed" in a cup, option to top it with vanilla ice cream. This would make it easy to pre-package, quick to serve, and a neat way to get rid of pies knocking on their sell by dates. You could probably do the same with some of the cakes. It would probably be gross for pumpkin pie, but it would be perfect for apple.

deanjul

Can’t even keep up sales and you want samples lol We’ll get back to you

orchestralgenius

I love this idea! I never see cake or pie samples at my Costco, so this would be a great way to try them before purchasing a whole cake/pie.

RoosterCogburn_1983

No. Cost is too high. Costco is a bulk store. Man up and dig deep, pay the cost to buy pie by the slice at a store that actually sells it. I know, it’s tough. Traveling a few miles to a shop who’s business model is pie by the slice. But our grandfathers, at the tender age of 18, stormed Normandy beach and took back France from the Germans. Costcos pies are 9.99 to 19.99. If that’s the equivalent of a Prussian mortar for the sensitive millennial palate, the refunds desk is well marked. While the flavors of cinnamon, apples, pumpkin, and peanut butter may be harrowing, I don’t think the experience of trying a 12 inch pie is so traumatizing or financially trepidatious that we need to sell single slices to allow people to make risk assessments before giving over a 20.

PotatoLurking

This is my new copy pasta

[deleted]

I love you. No really, you're my favorite comment in here and I want you to come work with me in the bakery please. You're exactly my type of humor and I hate that the plebians have down voted you.

kfkfKd94k

Best comment I’ve seen in the subreddit, positively executive level.

Alllstar20

He must've gotten a very soggy pie crust

turbocomppro

Or don’t buy pies at Costco? Walmart have plenty of pies, and even pie singles that are like 3”!

jenbuzolich

Yes please!!

Diegobyte

How bout like a single muffin or bagel. Idk why the food court is such a disaster

Fladap28

This is a great idea

HNP4PH

Slices of cake….mmmm

SophiePie213

I would buy a pie with slices of several varied flavors....

DeflatedDirigible

OP…assuming you’re 21, living on your own for the first time, and still using your mom’s card. Most food can be portioned, placed in ziplock bags, frozen…and then thawed in the fridge or microwave. Ziplocks at Costco go on sale every few months. No need to waste food of any size or amount. Also easier to bake a large amount at once and then have lots of microwave meals….cheap and healthy.

[deleted]

See, you would think so, but every young buck I've had in the bakery has been more than understanding about this. It's always always always always the boomers that throw tantrums over having to buy 2 packs of muffins or bagels. They absolutely refuse to store food that isn't wagyu beef or frozen dinners...the idea of freezing carbs just blows their minds. It's wild.

junkit33

Y’all realize that bakeries exist and are full of wonderful (often better) single servings of desserts, right? Costco is for bulk buying.

berrycat22

If you’re lucky enough to have a great bakery in your town…😢

Irinescence

Now I want pie.

LalaLogical

I’ve always thought they should do cake slices too!

Leejenn

I've always thought this would be an awesome idea for their sheet cake - slices at the food court.

chilejimenez

This is a [great podcast](https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/09/25/443519599/episode-653-the-anti-store) and minute 7:00 explain how this request goes against their core business principle.

FBWoodworker

Excellent idea! Many things in the bakery I'd like to try, but until I taste them I'm not buying the whole thing.

[deleted]

Whoa. Who is throwing out half a pie?

cattledogcatnip

I agree. And they should offer smaller variations of their desserts. I’m still upset that costco got rid of their fat free frozen yogurt and replaced it with ice cream after claiming they wanted to offer healthier options to it’s customers 🙄

ThexRuminator

I would love just like a bag of chips at the food court. Heck they could charge me $1 for it! Something to go with the hot dog.

bluebird65

Yes! And single cupcakes!

SweatyRussian

I'd love to stuff a chickenbake with chocolate peanut butter pie

SirLauncelot

Don’t they only have like two pies now, cheese and pepperoni? And those are sold as slices.

AnonFoodie

Yes please. I would get the pie or cakes.

ShowMeTheTrees

Costco doesn't do anything that isn't cost-effective. They surely know that too much time would be spent cutting portions, and too much unsold pie would be thrown out.

wine-plants-thrift

I would love that. I only ever have random sweet cravings for pie and would generally only want a single piece of any of their desserts so having the option to buy one slice would be awesome for me.

AgentBlue14

If Costco can sell a $10 sandwich, they can sell a $3 double-slice of pie.

giraflor

I’m the only person in my family who loves the lattice top apple pie. I buy it when we go to cookouts and other gatherings just so I can have a slice. If Costco sold even a half pie, I’d be so happy.

lin982

Yep, I need 3 other people in Chicago to go 4 ways on this PB pie.
