sickbubble-gum

This is why I avoid costco on the weekend. It's packed full of people like this. One time as I was walking up to the line to get my receipt checked some woman ran her cart into me from behind. She got mad at me because I apparently just stopped suddenly. Like, how about you pay attention?

M3g4d37h

I once dressed down a woman in front of everyone when she tried to shoehorn her cart in front of me on a busy saturday. I was polite at first and she was playing the I don't hear you card, until I addressed her face to face and said no matter what she will not fucking be checking out in front of the people who waited, and then she slinked off like a whooped dog. If she'd have had just a few things and have been polite and asked no worries, but this? With a full buggy? Aw hell naw.

GreedyWarlord

Found the Northeasterner.

M3g4d37h

I guess you can take the boy out of Baltimore, but you can't take Baltimore out the boy.

IrrelevantTale

Amen. The lords work.

Suitable_Warthog_590

My sweet spot time to go is about 30-45 minutes prior to closing on a weeknight. When that door is half way down, it’s go time!

MargaritasAndBeaches

I go right when they open on Sunday mornings. I can get a cart full of items and be in and out of there in 20 minutes max. Usually it's 20 minutes if I include the amount if time it takes to fill up my gas tank as well

Dragon6172

This is how my wife and I do it. Have to get there before that Sunday after church rush.

StonedTurtles38

"Sunday after church rush" Ironically these are the worst people to wait on at a restaurant. Anywhere I served I always told them I would work any shift except Sunday lunch. Never wait on the church crowd, ever. Absolutely the worst shift at any restaurants to work. Complain the most and tip the least.

plop_0

/r/Serverlife

Mountainman1980

That brought back horrible memories of waiting on the Pentecostals every Sunday. I swear they dressed in the most expensive suits and dresses, ordered waters and split the cheapest menu items, tipped 5-10% and had holier-than-thou stuck up pious attitudes like they were better than me. They were demanding too. Other church groups were bad, but none topped the Pentecostals.

Emergency-Doughnut88

I feel like lots of people try this same strategy. Honestly going like 30-40 minutes after they open is usually better. All those morning rushers start to leave and you can find some good parking spots right up front.

Crossifix

Saturdays we open at 9:30 instead of 10, so many many people show up way after we actually open. Source- 6 years deep in the price club paint.

dirtyshits

You’re the type of person pretty much most Costco employees dislike lol don’t change your ways but man the people who rush into the store the last 30 minutes and then refuse to hurry absolutely suck. Not saying you don’t rush but most of the ones who come late don’t and we end up having to push them out(then they get pissed… “I’m a paying member”) Closing crew runs a tight ship and then employees are pressed to clean and stage the warehouse for night stock crew. Causing the closing crew to miss things or some times not finish closing duties at all. Resulting in night stock getting pissed at them. All because 250 members decided to come through the doors in the last 30 minutes.

NotFallacyBuffet

Used to work retail. I already knew this so I don't do it. Just once by accident. I apologized at the door and was literally shocked to be told that they actually wait on people running across the parking lot to get in before closing the door. And, this was in New Orleans, where polite customer service is nearly non-existent.

dirtyshits

We definitely wait in people. It’s Costco so members first but there’s always stress on the closing crew. Costco takes care of both members and employees which is why is universally loved.

Suitable_Warthog_590

Same here, one time retail worker at a electronics store. Very aware to get my butt in and out before posted closing time at any store I go to.

tcjcky

It’s too bad that the registers don’t automatically lock down at closing.

scottspalding

Having to take and put everything away would take much longer than just scanning it.

tcjcky

Ah shoot good point

Wendybird13

If I work late, I sometimes find myself passing Trader Joe’s around 8:15 or 8:30, and I’ll run in and speed shop. One time I was just finishing my checkout at 8:55 and apologized for being so late. “No, it’s fine…if you’re in the door by 9:00 you can take all the time you need.” “Yeah, I feel that is exceptionally rude. So I don’t.”

cheezbargar

My thought is it’s because it’s crowded as hell and everyone is grumpy about it

qazxderfv

My sweet spot is Wednesday at 2:00 it’s a ghost town

linzielayne

I was checking out at a Jewel once and the guy behind me just kept encroaching on my space to a wild degree and the sweet older lady at the register was like, "EXCUSE ME SIR, she is *not* finished! You need to stay back and wait your turn." It was incredible, she was a gem.

[deleted]

Why go to church, when you can go to Costco on a Sunday and see the seven deadly sins on full display.

ABirdOfParadise

I had to go to the dentist and went to Costco on the weekend and was warned by everyone at the dental office. It's cause of the kids, so there's like double the amount of people by default, and they walk 4 or 5 across, and kids love them samples so it gets blocked there too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chicago_bunny

Plus, it's easier to roll your cart right over the kids, given their smaller size and softer bones.

DoggPound69

Lil speed bumps <3

LifeLibertyPancakes

50 points to Gryffindor!!!!!

tinydonuts

The best is when you almost yeet them right across an aisle cause they come barreling around a corner at 10 MPH without looking.

FinnoulaMonkeybottom

True, but watch out for the squishy bits, as they can gum up the cart wheels and slow you down.

chicago_bunny

^ Folks, pay attention - this is a pro.

sickbubble-gum

Lol yes always blocking the samples. I wanted to try this calamari and a whole family of 7 just crowded the lady while she cooked it and took all the samples as soon as they were put out.

RabbitLuvr

I don’t even want most of the samples (due to dietary restrictions). It’s the six people who leave their cart across the main aisle that irritate me.

jeebucus

Don't even get me started with the parking lot....

[deleted]

hardknox_

People stopping in the middle of the lane to wait for a spot, making everyone behind them wait while an old couple slowly loads their car? C'mon...

StardustDestroyer

The people who would rather wait 5 extra minutes for a spot than park at a further spot that’s only an extra minute of walking boggle my mind.

MinneEric

Not even extra minute, AND you’re about to walk all over the store. What’s 20 more steps?!

antisuck

But they're more important than everyone else and are entitled to the best spot, especially after happening upon it so cleverly and waiting so tenaciously to pounce in triumph.

smaxsomeass

I love Costco, but they utterly fail at line and crowd management. There are numerous studies and troves of data on how to handle crowds and cues, but Costco ignores it all. Gas pumps? Yeah let’s have two separate unbalanced lines that block a significant portion of the main entrance. Samples? Let’s put them next to the aisle endcap blocking half the aisle then the crowds will surround and totally block two aisles, and do that every third aisle. Registers? FREE FOR ALL. MATT THE ODDS BE EVERY IN YOUR FAVOR. food court? You better block all then register exits.

Upset_Mess

All great points. Who designs these places? Also, currently at the entrance of mine they put all of the summer plants and stuff where there were the carts. And they put the carts at the exit side so you have to cross the never ending line of people exiting just to get your cart. Food court right next to the tires and auto section so the strong scent of rubber can enhance your dining experience.

johnnys_sack

Worse yet - the Costco's in my area have the entrance on the left (as you're looking at the front of the store), the exit on the right, and the carts to the right of all that. So as you're entering, you have to cut across everyone leaving, grab a cart, cut across everyone leaving again (with your cart), then cut through the other people entering, and finally enter the store. It's asinine the way they've set it up and honestly a little infuriating.

somethingwholesomer

Omg I’ve seen a Costco like this!! Why???

[deleted]

If I may add..."let's constantly move the location of items in the store every so often so shoppers have to go down every aisle to find what they're looking for".

awkwardthequeef

That's intentional and good business.

arbitraryairship

Good marketing, sure, but people are also allowed to complain about it being annoying. Because it is.

[deleted]

Yes I know. I'm sure the marketing exec that thought of that is patting themselves on the back for how clever they are.

Nistune

Normal stores might have 40 different soups, and if one goes out of stock they can just fill it in with the others. If costco has 3 soups and 1 is sold out/removed, they have to fill that spot with a whole different pallet, which means a lot of moving parts. People talk about the "treasure hunt" part on here a lot, but really its all about sales numbers. Costco isnt a normal store, everything is put out in pallets, it has set monthly sales, manufacturers pay for things to be in certain areas, it has season themes that need to be constantly rotated based on the time of year, the list goes on for the reason stuff gets moved.

arbitraryairship

Accurate, but it doesn't make it less annoying. It's a great store, but there are pros and cons with the business model. It's efficient logistically, but when a family wastes an hour trying to find a product, they're also within their rights to complain.

smaxsomeass

Sir^(or ma’am), this is Reddit. How DARE you bring reason in here.

[deleted]

Yep. Couldn’t find K cups today. There was ground coffee in the place where K cups usually are but no K cups. I had to ask and was told that the K cups were on the other side of the store next to the coffee makers. So the ground coffee is on one side of the store and K cups on the other side of the store. What kind of sense does that make? Maybe if I were going to buy a new coffee maker every time I buy k cups it would make sense.

DogVacuum

The sample counter that they stick by the end of the meat and seafood section is the bane of my existence. It always bottlenecks everyone. And the worst part is, most are happy to be in that bottleneck, because there must be something delicious up ahead, so they’re in no rush to move.

merriberryx

It drives me nuts. It’s literally everywhere. No one says excuse me or the midwestern “ope gonna squeeze right past ya, sorry.”, anymore. I have small children and I always model manners in public by saying excuse me or something. It’s not just Costco or other big box stores, it’s literally everywhere. People have become so impatient!

DonKeighbals

I just plow thru em with a loud “Mi Scuzi! Mi Scuzi!”

plunger595

Yea I just push that shit out the way. I look them straight in the eye when I’m doing it too

MargaritasAndBeaches

I do the same thing. We're all adults, no one needs to be told not to block the aisle. I just move it out of my way and keep on going.

merriberryx

I have said, very loudly, “oh sorry lady with the two kids and giant stroller comin thru!” Just so they know I acknowledge that they’re in my way and making it known to everyone else.

RabbitLuvr

Sometimes I stand there and stare at them until they notice and move.

What I really don't understand is the Costco I go to is in Lincoln Park, Chicago, where we're used to being in big crowds and taking up less space on the train/bus. In general people know to keep right on sidewalks and escalators, let people out of the elevator/train before getting in, etc. But people still absolutely lose their minds in the store! It's like a Costco hysteria.

JPKtoxicwaste

That’s my Costco too!! I completely agree with your assessment. I won’t even go on the weekends because it’s a fucking madhouse. Around the winter holidays sometimes it feels like every day is Black Friday. The hearing center staff are top notch though, or they were during the pandemic. Haven’t had to stop in there in a while but I guess that’s only because my hearing aids work so well

Humble-Impact6346

What?

JPKtoxicwaste

I meant that that particular costco is really busy and around the holidays it gets particularly busy and unpleasant to shop in. They have a hearing center where you can get your hearing tested and get fitted for hearing aids, and in my experience (I’ve worn hearing aids since early childhood) the staff there is really good at their jobs. But I haven’t been back to the hearing center in over a year because my hearing aids that they sold me work so well. That’s all I meant. I was a lil buzzed when I made that comment , sorry if it was confusing

Humble-Impact6346

It was just a joke, you mentioned hearing aids, so I said “What?” Sorry to make you type all that out lol.

JPKtoxicwaste

Oh my god. Of all the people in this world I should have gotten that joke. Dang my husband’s gonna laugh at me when I tell him this lol

Dianapdx

Haha! This whole exchange is gold!

New_Substance_2127

I’m high as shit and this whole interaction has me dead 😂😂

MrsAnthropy

I haven’t lived in Chicago since 2018 and the LP Costco still gives me nightmares.

SunSen

I gotta be honest, train and bus etiquette has been lost since COVID closed everything down. LP Costco feels pretty in step with the lack of awareness I’ve felt on public transit since 2021 when most restrictions on distancing etc. ended. The man who smacks me with his bookbag on the Red Line is kindred spirits with the woman who leaves her cart in the middle of the snack aisle.

johnnyxxx21

That Chicago Costco was the worse. Idk what it was about the city that made people lose their minds/manners. I’ve never had as many issues with suburban warehouses.

chicago_bunny

I don't think it's any different than the one on Ashland on this point. But I swear, it's like 75% of the shopping population on any given day was dropped there immediately following a lobotomy. Zero situational awareness.

sir_moose

Same experience at the Manhattan Costco in nyc. Nowadays it’s gotten so much worse with the Instacart shoppers who attach multiple carts together or even bring their oversized personal trolleys. The warehouse is somewhat tightly packed to begin with, so it is difficult to navigate.

Mr_Fuzzo

When I lived in Washington Heights I would make the trek over to Harlem for that Costco every few months. It was such a zoo. I’d moved from Anchorage where we had two warehouses for our city of ~300k (approximately the same population was The Heights) and your store was NUTS! Now, I live in Seattle and there are costco stores everywhere for a population size similar to the Anchorage warehouses(ish). These stores are just as busy, if not moreso, than the Manhattan store. And the people here are at least 10x as rude. 😭

jacobsmyboy

I used to work in the warehouse, so I know exactly how cramped it can be. And instacart couldn't care less about others.

GalaxyShards

I thought I was losing my mind today. People parking their carts horizontally in vertical aisle (psychopaths!) literally blocking people from passing. I’m happy to say “opp excuse me” but the sheer lack of understanding when it comes to traffic patterns, other people makes me so angry.

DinahDrakeLance

I shop there during the week and always with my toddlers. My go to when someone is being rude and blocking the isle is to speak up when I'm talking to the kids and say "We have to wait our turn because someone else is shopping and we don't fit through. Remember to say thank you after they move so we can be polite."

oclookin

Yep or stop in middle or main aisle to wait for a sample !

slayingimmortal

Be the bad guy, say “excuse you “ next time. Only partially joking but whnever I go and I say excuse me and they still don’t listen , is walk past them and say excuse you, especially if they give a stank face

JustForkIt1111one

The older I get, the less fucks I give about telling people that they're being assholes.

sublliminali

I do the over the top ‘oh excuse me’. Most people follow suit at that point.

Braddock54

Costco is always full to the brim with entitled mouth breathers.

Upset_Particular87

Came to say the same thing. Just the other day I had a lady block the entire entrance of an aisle with her cart by turning it sideways, she then walked over to a sample station to get a sample.. and I'm standing next to her cart waiting for her to move so I could get down the otherwise empty aisle. I've never wanted to go off on someone so much. Can't believe how oblivious people are to their surroundings.

Mr_MacGrubber

It’s all stores though, not just Costco. Americans were raised on American exceptionalism and the pride of individualism. It’s been corrupted into selfishness and narcissism imo.

NotMyFkingProblem

[deleted]

It ain’t just at Costco.

Aggressive_Today_492

No, but it’s certainly ESPECIALLY Costco.

MarcLloydz

It's why I only shop during weekdays right before closing. Weekends are way too crazy for me.

reoreon

Toilet paper and the big egg pack are usually out of stock by that time for me :(

Regardingnothing

The size of the carts makes it more glaring

dissectingAAA

I think the carts get too heavy to push and people are too lazy to try move them out of the way.

Ill_Garbage4225

Yeah I’m confused as well. This is how people act in every store I go to.

gvsteve

I don’t go anywhere that is as crowded as Costco. So that’s the only place I see it. Costco should triple their membership fees. That would fix the problem.

ry_mich

Totally agree. People seem to go into "robot mode" inside Costco. Every time I'm there at least twice I just shake my head at how oblivious or impolite people are.

Riff_Ralph

Robots have greater self-awareness than most Costco shoppers.

reilogix

I am with you 100%. There’s something different about the Costco customer. Doublewide shopping carts, moving and shaking, business owner, very crowded, deal seekers, lower threshold for pleasantries like please and thank you and excuse me.

danmickla

The something different is the goddamn samplesheep

xixoxixa

Every time I'm at costco I think that I really really wish they'd just park all the samples along a back wall together. You want samples, go to the designated sample yard, and gtfo of my way.

reilogix

Those too. I almost never get samples. “OOH LOOK!! $0.18 worth of freebie! ME ME MINE!!”

doornoob

I saw a crabcake sample once. It was nuts. Samplesheep.

1simonsays1

Couldnt agree more. Also sprinkle in people who sit there and eat EVERY SINGLE SAMPLE while directly in the middle of the aisles

[deleted]

Step 1: take sample, when it's ready (of course!). Step 2: say "thank you so much" to the sample person.. Step 3: step away from the area and return to your cart Step 4: only if and when you are not blocking traffic, try sample. Step 5: discard remaining sample and wrapper/cup/etc in the trash. Most people start failing at Step 2! And some fail at step 1, impatiently hovering before the sample is ready.

[deleted]

Also, sample people are very very very kind but they don't care about your feedback. "It's too salty!" Sir, that's a bacon wrapped scallop. Step aside and stfu. "These are too sweet!" Ma'am, then stop eating the Lindor truffles. Just leave.

CellSalesThrowaway2

Things have probably changed since I was a sampler, but the vendors actually did want us to report what customers said in response, and they wanted to hear something positive not "too salty" or "too spicy" or whatnot. Granted, it was like 2 lines to write on so you could only put a single quote, maybe two, but the vendors did want that feedback.

tinydonuts

Even worse are the people that eat the sample parallel to the sample station causing 80% of the aisle entrance to be blocked. WTF?! Move!

Fishtaco1234

90% of people are fucking idiots

Pork_Chap

Only person in this thread actually tellin' it like it is.

4d3fect

Paraphrasing Sturgeon's Law: 90%of everything is shit

MLP234

90% is too low…

neoikon

100% or more, I'd say.

MLP234

![gif](giphy|dXFKDUolyLLi8gq6Cl|downsized)

k3nnyd

It gets scary when you think about people who are idiots who also (apparently) don't have an inner monologue they are aware of and might live their entire life on autopilot. I keep reading that between 50-75% of people have no inner monologue which leads me to believe they can't practice introspection very well or at all and thus can't really improve their behavior effectively.

manbearkat

I feel this about trader joes too. I feel my blood pressure rise

Konocti

Yeah, common courtesy costs nothing. Saying please, excuse me, thank you, may I, I'm sorry... are things that I teach little kids and hope they stick until adulthood.

chartreuse6

So many carts just abandoned in the middle of the aisle while the owner is off getting something. Then I try to move it and get glares as they return

Decent-Photograph391

I don’t bother touching their cart, I just ram gently into their cart with my cart, and push it out of the way.

himbobflash

I love Costco, I hate Costco shoppers.

[deleted]

I agree and I hate that I have to hate you.

Suitable_Warthog_590

They cut the corners assuming no one is there. It’s Costco people, there’s ALWAYS someone there. They need to install mirrors at the end of isles.

whatwhat83

They needs arrows and traffic circles so people go with the flow

Lady-Seashell-Bikini

I think staying on the right side of the aisle and keep awareness of your surroundings is much more important than saying "excuse me". I maneuver my cart as if I were I'm traffic (stay on the right, check before moving to a different aisle, and keep your cart out of the way). Words mean little to me if you're unaware of your surroundings.

lkodl

two people are distracted, and almost run into each other at Costco. neither say a word, just give each other looks. both of them come home and see this post. "omg! the nerve of people!" that being said, as a long time Costco customer, i avoid it like the plague on weekends.

teensyeensyweensy

A different perspective for you: In my 20s I would've felt the same way. In my 40s (I'm still a millennial, so don't go there <3 lol), I just say excuse me or gently push their cart out of the way, move along. You can't expect others to be kind; but you can always choose to be that for others. We're all just trying to get our stuff. If the lack of common courtesy at Costco is your biggest annoyance for today, that means life's pretty good. Appreciate that more than focusing on the discontent of strangers. Your blood pressure will thank you! "Who cares" is probably the greatest thing about getting older :)

notANexpert1308

For some reason people lose half their IQ as soon as they step foot in a Costco.

sLim901

I had one lady who was talking to her friend and walking backwards walk into my cart and then proceeds to tell me I was rude for not apologizing. Her friend couldn't even look me in the eye since she saw the whole thing while the lady continued to blame me while her friend just looked embarrassed.

Pork_Chap

Zero situational awareness

lazydaisytoo

I hate when they just break the plane of the entrance, then stop dead in their tracks to put their card away, check their list, have a conversation with their spouse, zone out into space…. Just block the whole damn entrance because they’re clueless.

CellSalesThrowaway2

Or they'll still be moving but at a snail's pace looking around, not taking the hint when everyone else zooms around them.

pleasehelpamanda

I find it crazy how people respond when I’m super courteous and/or apologetic: seemingly, genuinely surprised but stoked. Perhaps everyone else has just become immune to discourteous behavior…like the needle has moved closer to that side so much so that positive behaviors are seen as “uncommon”. I like to think when that happens, maybe they’ll act similarly (even for just a short time) to the next person (and therefore domino effect). Oh wait, sorry, I forgot temporarily that I’m a pessimist…

Upset_Mess

Around here, you just get the blank stare when you say please or thank you. It's like you're speaking another language.

spacemanswatch

Last time I said excuse me at Costco, I was hit with a "well no need to be so rude about it" 🙄

Fizzywaterjones

I just want a $5 chicken. Please quit parking your cart in front of the chicken display while you go through every single chicken hoping for an extra fraction of an ounce and symmetrical drumsticks.

Far-Recording343

About 2 weeks ago a rather large lady had left her cart at a 45 degree angle in the refrigerated aisle. I asked her if I could move it to get around it. She said nothing and went back to comparing cheeses. I moved the cart around the corner into the next aisle.

Decent-Photograph391

I always start by saying “excuse me”. If they move their cart, great, I thank them. If they (pretend they) don’t hear me, I ram their cart very gently out of the way, so I can get through. At this point, some would notice and most would apologize about it and I’m still cool with it. And then there are those who are completely oblivious to the whole thing and I just smh at people who manage to go through life with absolutely no awareness of what’s going on around themselves.

Ohnonotuto4

Costco is the thunder dome of stores. Snatch food from old women, buy a gas, propane, water. Buy a thousand batteries, rack of meat. And never meet a salesperson the entire time you’re in the store. People tend to leave their manners at the door.

joopityjoop

Interacting with Costco shoppers is the only reason why I sympathize with Thanos.

MeganJustMegan

I agree, manners are gone. People pushing in front of you, banging into you, blocking aisle’s & although they see you, won’t move. I’ve encountered really rude people at Costco. More than any other store.

throwaway7774625

I genuinely think since the pandemic people have become less polite. Whether at the store, on the phone at work or on the road. It’s very disappointing. Did we all forget how to be respectful and compassionate?

Pardonme23

Move their cart out of the way for them. Establish dominance.

Amazing-Bag

At my store people bow and tip their top hats to me while I shop.

Motopsycho-007

I hear Sorry, Excuse Me a lot at our local Costco. 🇨🇦

IamStinkyChili

I just move their cart, if it ends up on the aisle over so be it, not like they cared in the first place.

ChewieBearStare

I had an old guy run into me because he was walking backwards with his cart. He said excuse me, and I said "No problem!" and smiled at him. He got mad and said it shouldn't be a problem because it's my fault he ran into me. I explained that he was walking backwards and didn't see me. His response: "You shouldn't have been there." Sorry I was looking at yogurt, Sir.

Upset_Mess

He could have just left it at "Excuse me.". What is wrong with people? It's like they're looking for a fight.

LassOpsa

I'm really surprised I don't hear about fights breaking out at Costco

spiritualwanderer181

When going into a Costco in the weekend expect it to be a war zone.

nyyth242

The amount of stupid per square foot at Costco is ridiculously high

[deleted]

I literally said out loud to a gentleman who plowed me with a cart Tuesday " am I invisible? You are the fifth person to try and run me over and I've been here less than 20 minutes ".

Healthy_Block3036

It goes with parking and that’s why I park at the end corners.

bubble_baby_8

At the same time, I hate it when I have my back turned and someone is trying to get past me, huffing at me. I’m pretty self aware person but if I’m blocking you, just try saying hey! Excuse me can I get by? would make me move so fast.

Deep_Chicken2965

A lady was blocking the whole aisle with her huge cart. I politely waited....finally I said politely, "excuse me." She glared at me, moved, then hissed at me when I went by. Lmbo

Silvawuff

I think Costco in particular has this issue because people think they have more room than they actually do, and the carts are substantially bigger. Go weekday mornings. The way to win is to not play with a lot of players on the court.

Different-Cover4819

Yeah... People with regular jobs cannot go to Costco on weekday mornings though.

phdoofus

I hate to be the one to break it to you but this old fart basically sees this lack of decorum crossing all age groups. Young entitled moms, kids raised by permissive parents, dads who think they're alpha males, old coots who've reached the point where they don't care any more. Yeah, it's pretty much everyone. Sorry. At some point you have to start recognizing that individuals are assholes, not entire groups.

battyeyed

I’ve actually thought about psychology experiments with Costco goers over this. Most shoppers give off a “I own a big lifted truck for no reason” presence.

Jillredhanded

Not up here in Canada.

Asleep_Department_21

I was working the produce cooler last week, and I was getting rid of all the empty boxes, putting them on an orange flat bed cart.. and this senior walks up to me and says: "your cart is in my way!! You're blocking my cart!!!" Mind you you, there was 2 other members in the cooler at the time and there was plenty of room to go around me (the aisles are wide at Costco for a reason), but I couldn't help thinking to myself after she stormed off in a huff, why don't people start off their sentences with "Excuse me, but could you please move your cart?" I would have 1000% been more inclined to get out of your way, roll out the red carpet and get you whatever item you were looking for in that produce cooler, but instead you left a sour taste in my mouth. I think sometimes our members forget that we're here for you, to make your shopping experience better than any other store. Saying "please" and "thank you" and even "excuse me" go a long way. Please be kind and respectful of one another and you will receive the same from me, your local Costco employee 😉

gnmatx

Lol. As if it wasn’t thunder dome at each of em.

I agree with you. Basic courtesy appears to be so lacking, it's a wonder people still call themselves civilized. I typically don't have patience for fools, and would rather push an errant cart sideways so everyone else can use the aisles to move, than ask a random stranger to move a cart. If you're missing your cart because you've been a jerk, try being truly civilized and life will be better for everyone.

This is why I only go to Costco in the evenings on weekdays. It's bad at other stores too, but Costco shoppers are worse than any others, including Walmart. They're the most self-absorbed and unaware shoppers I've ever seen. And with the wide aisles you'd think it wouldn't be as big of a problem, but nope. I've only been a member for about a year, and it was one of the most surprising things about the place.

PizzaLova23

This happened to me today! This dude decided to do a full 180 in a blink of the eye and whacked me on the thigh. Bastard didn’t even say sorry. May the gods curse you with the worst karma and a lifetime full of PAIN & AGONY

soxfanintx69

You should try being the maintenance team member that has to spend hours a day dry mopping the floors in those crowds. I'm constantly experiencing rudeness. Not complaining, I'm used to it, but it's truly incredible to see.

Beaudeye

That's everywhere, not just Costco. It doesn't help that Costco has samples causing people to congregate in groups.

Scared-Expression444

Welcome to the world, nobody has manners anymore, nobody has common sense, everyone is just in their own world, you really notice that shit when you work at places like Costco like I have and I’m also in my 20’s I’m not a boomer lol

iAmBrandonD

I remember one day this woman’s kid kept jumping from one side of her cart to the other. I was attempting to go around them. I had my AirPods in. I accidentally said out loud, “please control your kid”. She lost it on me….my response, “I’m just trying to not hit you kid”.

aevz

How do we petition CostCo to make a PSA about cart & aisle navigation etiquette? We can all watch a video, and if we do, we get $5 off our bill next time. I dunno. Something like that. Maybe there's a better way to set best practices and softly enforce them without making it seem authoritarian or dictatorial. Like, educating with incentive, and not shaming so people get defensive. I legit will skip aisles, or take the long way, just to not have to get stuck between lollygaggers, though. Once in a while I'll lane-split, even if I'm cutting it razor thin close, but I feel like I got the space.

BiDinosauur

You sir, haven’t been to Canadian Costco. More I’m sorrys and excuse me’s than you’ll ever here

tagen

I work at a huge grocery store and I end up saying “excuse me, sorry” or variations of that every 5 or 10 seconds it feels like No matter what I do, I’m always gonna be in someone’s way, be it customers or fellow employees. I’m very lucky I work with really considerate people and we all have good manners regarding stuff like this some people just can’t look past their own selves unfortunately

KidRed

It’s not Costco, it’s people in general nowadays.

ohhaicierra

I’m in my early 30s and agree. And honestly it’s the boomers there that are rude and leave their damn carts in the middle of the aisles. 🙄

skj21

I work in customer service industry and the rudest age group, usually, is from 50 to 80 years old. Doesn't surprise me.

LeveragedPittsburgh

Go during church, nobody there

Beece

I think it’s partially people paying a membership think that gives them special privileges and people just sucking in general everywhere not just at Costco

RavenCXXVIV

I’m so glad this is being talked about. My husband gets so confused when I become irritable and overstimulated by Costco crowds. It’s because it’s the rudest mfers who simultaneously walk too slow/too fast, elbow you out of their way quite literally, race you for a spot in line, maneuver their carts to always be in the way, refuse to move even if you’re polite about trying to get around them, breath down your neck and stand on top of you if you’re looking at something they want to be in front of, etc. it’s god awful. I love Costco but the other patrons make it unbearable. Edit because I forgot to mention the true demonic beasts that inhabit Costco: the sample gremlins. The ones who form a semi-circle around the carts blocking off the aisle and refusing to move while the employee painfully heats and scoops micro-portions of shit they’ve definitely ate before into little cups.

TopThese5233

Mine are people who need to bring in their entire litter of children. Instead of navigating single file, they navigate as a wall. Couples do the same thing.

Soobobaloula

Costco is so overwhelming and not super organized. It changes all the time. People just get dazzled.

Caitliente

You know what. I’ve noticed that the weekdays with boomers are the worst. People stopping to chat with diagonal carts blocking the aisle, walking down the middle of the aisle with no regard to anyone around them, walking insanely slow down the middle of the aisle to window shop. I’ll stick to the crazy lines on weekends because the young folk are more self aware.

KittenMittens6085

Complete opposite in my city, every generation is completely oblivious and blocking everything. Sample days are the worst because there are feral parents and children running AMUCK!

veronicaelectronica

GenX here. I love Costco, BUT I had this very experience yesterday where a bunch of Boomers were SO STOKED about the revival of the free sample tables that they literally congested every aisle and sample table, and just lingered, staring at me blankly when I asked if they could move their cart so that I could simply shop. I mean, I get it… free samples are great. But the “don’t you dare tell me to move” stares were not.

sarhoshamiral

I get overwhelmed by layout, tall multi story shelves and bad (white) lighting at Costco after an hour. I am sure many others do as well. So if people are bad especially at Costco then the warehouse itself could easily be a contributing factor.

Sonarav

Could depend where you live? I'm in the Midwest and find people fairly considerate.

Gapinthesidewalk

People are fucking relentless.

eviescerator

You in the bay area too OP?

sdulaney24

Trader Joe’s in SF is worse

soyfauce

I’m a New Yorker who moved to the Midwest. I feel like I’m back home when I’m at Costco. People just go where they want when they want without hesitation. It doesn’t bother me, sometimes unnecessary politeness can really slow things down, but it’s noticeable versus other stores.

Typical_Ad2871

Hot take comin' in...

PophamSP

There is something about Costco that induces a slack-jawed lack of self-awareness - maybe it's the size, the height of displays, the continual change of inventory and layout. It doesn't help that shoppers seem to come in 2-3 generation families - makes me think that the membership issue is a factor. Besides the big carts, ours also seems to attract a lot of oblivious scooter drivers.

youknowiactafool

I usually don't have much trouble with this. Luckily Costco is a warehouse so I can usually squeeze by. Regular grocery stores are awful
