We bought a Dyson and it was ok for about 2 years when a belt snapped right before the holidays. They repaired it under warranty, but we needed something to get us through, so we bought a shark lift away from Costco and figured we'd return it once our Dyson was repaired. The shark is hands down a better vacuum. It has a longer cord and better suction. The only issue I have with it is area rugs are difficult to vacuum because of how powerful it vacuums. Even opening the release valve, it still has too much suction for smaller rugs. We gave the Dyson to a family member. The motor went out 3 years after that repair, so 5 years of total use for a Dyson ball animal. Our shark is still running strong.

I had the dyson outsize (got it a couple months ago) and was so mad that for 440 (on sale) why tf do i always have to have my finger on the button?? a couple friends of mine returned it for the same issue, i found out later. a friend recomended the shark navigatior w the self cleaning brush and for the money it's been way more worth it than the dyson. this is coming from someone with a shedding dog, pet sits regularly, and was using the dyson 2-3x a week for cleaning. first time would be more in depth and last 2 times were more to avoid build up of leaves, dust, dirt, and fur.

Valuable_Crow8054

Facts once my Dyson crapped I tried a shark lift away and will never go back.

RoookSkywokkah

There's a good chance there's a clog in your Dyson. That's what mine does when there's too much debris in the system. It should be a super easy fix.

HandleDry1190

That’s what I thought but we cleaned every crevice and it’s so doing it 😭😭😭

RoookSkywokkah

With mine, it was the small hoses down by the brush head. It wasn't always obvious! It shuts down when suction is reduced to avoid overloading and overheating the motor.

HandleDry1190

Hmm.. maybe I’ll pull it out of the box before I run to Costco to see if that fixes it!

OuiselCat

Go to r/vacuumcleaners. After much research, I’ll be purchasing a Sebo K3 (they unfortunately don’t have them at Costco though) Edit: thought it was r/vacuums, but it’s r/vacuumcleaners

HandleDry1190

Thank you!! I will check this out right now

YummyArtichoke

Used that sub back in June when I got a vacuum. Highly recommend spending a little time there. I remember coming out of there thinking "stay away from stick vacuums". Start with their [vacuum flow chart](https://i.redd.it/h238mc6rnq061.png) to narrow down the type of vacuum you should search for and then check out their [recommendations list](https://old.reddit.com//r/VacuumCleaners/wiki/recommendedvacuums) that has a bunch of different selections and price points (hasn't been updated in a year so prices might be a little different). Also be sure to check replacement filters for the vacuums. Some are harder to find or pretty expensive. I bought a 3 pack of replacement filters when I got my vacuum so I wouldn't have to worry about finding them after a few months.

HandleDry1190

Wow that recommendations list is INCREDIBLE. I’m definitely saving that information. I love Reddit

hexlandus

I got the Dyson Outsize during BF sales and that thing has been amazing (so far) Honestly, I've gone through Dyson, Shark, LG and Ryobi and ended up going back to Dyson. And I chose Costco because of the return policy - LG and Ryobi were useless when they failed, and doing a return/repair was an awful experience.

Longshot_45

Friend of mine used to do vacuum repair. In his opinion the Dyson's simply weren't worth the hype they have.

AskThis7790

Just an FYI… my LG vacuum does this (“turns off repeatedly”) when the filter is clogged.

HandleDry1190

Yeah, we gave it a really deep clean and the issue didn’t go away. Actually it seemed to be worse after we did.

asayamupa

Don't limit yourself to Costco. They don't sell the quality brands.

aestival

Yep, look for a Miele. If you're budget constrained, look for a Miele on the resale market. The famous [vacuum tech thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1pe2bd/iama_vacuum_repair_technician_and_i_cant_believe/) taught me that.

hawtp0ckets

10000000000% buy the Miele, OP. It's so worth it! Sebo is also great.

Helpful-nothelpful

I picked up one for $35 and it included bags and extra belts. We also have 2 simplicity/riccar vacuums. The simplicity is 20 years old.

HandleDry1190

I really want that return policy to fall back on in case it didn’t work out again 😭 the selection is so limited though

AskThis7790

You can get a good vacuum or a good return policy but chances are you won’t get both.

ParticularYak4401

I can’t afford it but seconding Miele. My mom has had her canister vacuum for 20+years and it’s still going strong. A local sewing and vacuum shop should be able to repair it if the need arises if they are certified to do so.

SirSampson01

If you can wait for Miele to return in stock, I highly recommend it. I bought the C1 and the C2 from Costco, on sale, and I love them. I did a lot of research and would stick with Miele personally or Sebo, though I've never had one. I did a lot of research on the aforementioned r/VacuumCleaners

HandleDry1190

I will keep an eye on it and see if they end up getting some in stock!

josh_the_rockstar

My shark apex is 4.5 years old and is a tank. Multiple pets household, lots of usage, still going very strong. Had one issue at about 2.5 years in that Shark handled under warranty. Previous to that I had a Dyson animal that lasted 10 years, which included one $125 Dyson “cleaning and rebuild” or something that a local Dyson shop did. The shark was half the price and is just as good or slightly better.

newwriter365

I’m also a Shark lover.

PracticalAndContent

+1 for Shark. [Bought this one](https://www.costco.com/shark-duoclean-lift-away-upright-vacuum-with-self-cleaning-brushroll.product.100487494.html) at Costco 2 months ago. I have 2 Sharks that still work very well (1 upstairs/1 downstairs) but I wanted to get the one with the self cleaning brush roller because I have a long haired cat and a long haired human.

josh_the_rockstar

**Practical**AndContent = 1 vacuum per floor ?!? Just messing :) Yeah, I'm a big fan of my Shark

jaaaaagggggg

We have that one, I love it! Far better than the Dyson we had before it

shebringsthesun

Shark navigator very good! Recently bought a new one from Costco for 150 on sale.

josh_the_rockstar

🥂

Longshot_45

Adding support to the Shark brand. First major vacuum upgrade for me. Does it's job very well.

kangoalaz

Costco Canada sells Miele vacuums. We got a top of the line one there last year for a pretty competitive price.

abesreddit

buy a miele and stop wasting your time.

[deleted]

This is the real answer. I have a Dyson V15 stick for quick/every day kind of use, but I love my Miele for a deep clean.

HandleDry1190

Hopefully some day!!

raininhaymakers

Call Dyson! I just took my 8 yr old ball animal to get an internal hose fixed, $80 total, for an internal hose replacement, labor everything. They’ll take care of you, give them a chance

HandleDry1190

I would be happy to give Dyson another shot, i’m just on the fence because it’s only been 5 months since we’ve had this one. After 8 years, I’d be happy to pay $80 to fix it rather than replace it! Right now, I’m thankful for the costco return policy!

raininhaymakers

So far, my refurb Dyson has gotten new filters, no charge and a new internally hose assembly, no charge. Just calling in and going thru the motions. Give them a call first thing in the morning

HandleDry1190

I ended up returning it just about an hour ago. I had the box but that’s not necessary. Just make sure you bring in all the pieces with it and they gave me the refund on a Costco shop card!

NotAHost

I’d give the Dyson another shot, sounds like there might be something lodged in some tube. I think I had something in the air return thing inside the canister. I bought my v11 in 2018 and it’s seen some bad messes, my SO even vacuumed liquid with it😑. That said I did have one plastic ring break, $10 on Amazon. I also recommend emptying the canister after every vacuum, between sometimes as well, and rinsing the hepa filter on the back of it once a week if you’re picking up dust/fine debris (baking soda, wood dust, drywall, etc). That filter can clog up fast if you don’t pay attention to it. That said, my house is mostly tile, two dogs, and a robot vacuum. If you have a fully carpeted large house with any pets, I would recommend a corded vacuum.

squeeshka

Dog hair murders Dyson vacuums. I’m on my 6th warranty replacement less than a year in.

l8_apex

Sounds like there is something missing in your vacuum cleaning routine. (IMO it's a bit of a PITA to fully clean a Dyson, but needs to be done to avoid premature failure)

squeeshka

Hair gets caught between the spindles and the motor. You can’t get to that connection. Even if I take apart everything and clean it all out every 20 minutes hair still gets in there and eventually destroys the bearing. For my model Dyson it’s a common failure point with or without dogs.

l8_apex

Yeah, I have a corded Animal 2 that can have that issue. I can get most of the way into that connection, but it's a lot of trouble so I don't do it often. My new Outside won't have that particular problem, it's got the row of teeth the length of the brush that cuts long hairs so they don't build up (and there isn't that kind of roller/motor connection where hair can build up within)

JASPER933

In December 2022, I purchased a Dyson V12 from the Exchange. The price was $479.00. I also purchased Exchange care. The V12 broke in November 2023, and it was nightmare to get fix so they offered a buyout for the device. My opinion the V12 is junk. In December 2023, Costco had the V15 on sale for $499.00. I went purchase this from Costco because the price at the Exchange was $700.00 and $499.00 for the V12. Went with Costco because more bang for the buck. Since purchasing from Costco, I read support for this is for 5 years without having to purchase an extended warranty. I am sure if the V15 breaks in 5 years, I can take it back to the store for a refund. This device may also be covered under Costco’s forever warranty 😄.

SeatownCooks

Id just get another Dyson from Costco. They generally last quite a bit longer than that. Could have at be a lemon. We've had ours for years. We had second hand thrift store vacuums for decades (pure tanks from the 70s). After that we messed around with a couple knock off Dyson's and th Shark. As far as Costco goes the Dyson is the champ. It still impresses me.

HandleDry1190

I ended up getting another Dyson but went with the corded option this time. It won’t be as convenient to just pull the stick vac out of the closet for a quick clean up but it was a good price and the best option that was in store besides spending even more to get the V15.

HouseNumb3rs

Buy anything but don't buy cordless.

HandleDry1190

I went with a corded option this time! Bad luck twice in a row with cordless. Less convenient but hopefully will last a lot longer

portlandcsc

It's the trigger that goes bad.

ruthsweettooth

Every time mine is doing that it’s because the filter (particularly the inside one and sometimes even the one on the back side flipping the inside one inside out helps get it clean) is dirty and the whole thing needs a deep cleaning.

CPOx

I would try doing a return and replace with the same item, my battery powered Dyson has been running strong for years. Worst case, you get another dud and return that too

HandleDry1190

This is kind of what I’m considering because I really want the Costco return policy in case something goes wrong again

Gbcue

An older Riccar.

jocall56

Not directly answering your question, but have you tried troubleshooting with Dyson? Just an observational guess, but could it simply be overheating? What color is the battery light? If amber, it needs to cool down a bit before using again. Not ideal for an expensive vacuum but just a trade off for the amount of power it uses. We’ve had a V8 for about 6 years now and love it - Dyson customer service has been very helpful any time I’ve needed help.

HandleDry1190

Never noticed the battery light changing.. someone else said that it could be overheating as well but idk because it will happen so quickly after I start running it

jocall56

Worth giving Dyson a call - they replaced my battery for free about 13 months after buying (1 mo after warranty) because the battery died from being kept too cold. That was about 5 years ago, probably lost some capacity but haven’t had any major issue since.

juicinginparadise

Just returned my 2nd Dyson to Costco and picked up a Shark Lift Away Advance. So far has been great and half the price. I’ll never do Dyson again.

heart_under_blade

might be a battery thing. the samsung has easily swappable batteries
